Sundays with Bill: Wipe Out in Waco; Texas Strikes Recruiting Gold
5 years ago if you told me Baylor would beat Texas in consecutive seasons, and the Bears would boast a Heisman candidate, I would have said you were crazy. Things change. There's not many silver linings from the game. Jaxon Shipley, Marquise Goodwin, Jeremy Hills and few others played hard. Otherwise it was a lost day in Waco.
Talking points:
* The Baylor Game: Art Briles has put Baylor on the map, Case McCoy gets picked. The Defense disappears. Injuries devastate Texas again. Jaxon Shipley and Marquise Goodwin have their best days as Longhorns.
* The Bowl Game: It's looking like the Holiday Bowl against the the explosive Cal Bears, the importance of bowl practices, getting the team healthy. Yes I expect Bergeron and Brown to able to play.
* Recruiting: Texas lands 2 explosive playmakers in 72 hours, what it means for the offense.Donald Hawkins commitment looks imminent. Brandon Moore a silent commit? Banquet Weekend, I'll have a complete list, hint, it's impressive, LSU - Bama impressive. What to expect from Banquet Weekend.
* Texas Hoops gets a big road win against UCLA.

Who would we be playing?
If i remember correctly, it’s the 3rd or 4th team in the Pac-12. Would that be Washington, UCLA, or Cal?
Despite losing this weekend
Is Armstead still rescheduling his visit?

Armstead
Yes Armstead will have to reschedule because of the ACT. Curious timing IMO
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 4, 2011 5:11 PM CST up reply actions
Precisely
It’s possible Armstead is taking it again to improve his score. No way he can enroll early if he hasn’t taken the ACT.

Armstead
What are the Longhorns chances of actually landing Armstead?
Armstead
I was thinking about this the other day. Maybe it’s not the worst thing for Texas if Armstead doesn’t make the banquet. Armstead’s father said they could make a bowl practice. Armstead would get a chance to see a practice (recruits really like what they saw in the spring). The Armsteads are also tight with Longhorn Legend LaSalle Thompson. Thompson could play host to the Armsteads and Texas could give Arik their full and undivided attention. If Armstead visits, I’d like to see J Gray, Brewer or Cayleb Jones show him around.
I think Texas has a shot if they can get Armstead to visit. Oregon is said to the leader right now. USC is trying to get back in it (Armstead originally committed to USC).
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 4, 2011 5:58 PM CST up reply actions
A deciding factor could also be the basketball team right. Isn’t Arik looking to also hoop with whoever he goes to?
Correct
As I’ve said before, Texas offers Armstead the best football and basketball combo. I think Armstead’s size would be very welcome and he would get early minutes on the basketball team.
I like Armstead playing basketball, it’ll keep his weight down and keep him at DE.

remember when jackson jeffcoat wanted to walk on to the basketball team?
what ever happened to that?
Jackson decided not to pursue basketball
Armstead seems more serious about basketball, and he’s 6’8."

Mario?
Any chance that played a part in McGee losing his offer?
Really not happy
With Magee losing his offer. Don’t comprehend that. He’s so much better than most of the DL recruits we have committed.

Grade issues are popping up all over the place with Magee
I’m not sure if I buy it, but after Quincy Russell, it could be a problem at SA Sam Houston.

Doesn't look good
Peat has said recently he won’t be at the Banquet. Texas seems to be focusing on Hawkins.

I asked this question last week. If the Longhorns can land Hawkins, then Peat is not necessarily a need anymore.
Agreed
I think Texas should still pursue him, but it doesn’t look good. Hard to read where Peat is leaning. Nebraska, Stanford and USC are all in the mix.

Mack rumors
Any chance this starts to effect recruiting
Mack sent a letter to all the players telling them he has no plans to retire
I imagine that he sent similar letters to recruits. No I don’t think it will have any affect on recruits that are in regular communication with Texas.

Where does the commits of Marcus Johnson and Kendall Sanders
place Texas with DGB? I know he’s not afraid of competition and would play day 1 should he come here but is the staff targeting these two give any sort of indication as to where we stand with him?
"I want to be remembered as the guy who gave his all whenever he was on the field."
-Walter Payton
DGB
Sanders and Johnson have nothing to do with on how Texas stands with DGB. Dorial was always going to be a bonus player, not a player Texas plans around.

And again how does that affect JUCO recruiting? Do they count on that list
Kendall Sanders committed to Texas on Friday, Marcus Johnson committed today
Both committed over the phone after speaking with Mack and the coaches.

as far as i can tell....
he wanted to be a Horn the whole time? (and was just hoping/waiting for an offer from the good guys)
Quick scouting report
Marcus Johnson: 4.4 speed. Outside receiver. A legit 6’1." Tracks the ball in the air well. Makes good adjustments on poorly thrown balls (huge given our QBs), deep threat.
Kendall Sanders: 4.4 speed, 40 inch vertical, will probably play inside or outside at Texas. Can also give Texas some snaps at utility back. Has position versatility, played corner, QB, RB and WR at Athens High. Makes defenders miss, can take a short pass and house it.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 4, 2011 5:21 PM CST up reply actions
Not sure about Johnson's speed
He doesn’t look that fast on the field. He certainly doesn’t look as fast as Sanders
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
Yeah I'd like to see his timed speed translate better on the field
Johnson has been timed in the 4.4s. The Cosm guys feel that Johnson is third best WR in the state.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 4, 2011 5:24 PM CST up reply actions
long stride
I think his long stride makes him look slower but Roy was the same way. Always looks a little slower on the field but he made plays a lot. I really like the Johnson pick up.
Kendall sounds like percy Harvin
dont really know who to compare Johnson to
Davis burns a lot of people
He just doesn’t have a QB who can throw him the ball. One of Case’s picks yesterday was because he couldn’t throw the ball to a wide open Davis on a fly. Mike needs to learn to focus better and catch easy passes, but he’s a master at getting open on deep routes.
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
I can't count on two hands
how many times Davis has had about 2-3 steps on CBs only to have to track back to the ball because it was underthrown.
A fair comparison
Hopefully Johnson is more explosive and has better hands.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 4, 2011 5:25 PM CST up reply actions
Sanders
Does Sanders stick as a WR or will he eventually be moved to defense where I’ve read he’s one of the best CBs in the state? What does your gut tell you? And would he handle the move well if it happened?
Sanders
Texas has playmakers at DB, they have a lot of them. At WR, not so much. I think Sanders is a WR unless something changes.

It's been a crazy year in the Pac 12
I’m not sure what to expect. Thank goodness for the bowl practices, and Bergeron and Brown getting healthy.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 4, 2011 5:32 PM CST up reply actions
Watched them play a few times
Although not very carefully….. Maynard seems to have been doing lately once Tedford simplified the offense for him. He’s not very accurate, but mobile and wants to get the ball to his brother (Keenan Allen, also their best athlete), whenever possible. Really have enjoyed watching their running back. He’s a tough runner, but not as explosive as some of their past running backs. Would say their defense is average at best. Haven’t really seen anyone jump out (hard since in each game they struggled defensively i.e. ASU, USC, and Oregon)
This is a good summation
Also, their no. 2 WR Marvin Jones is very talented, especially with the ball in his hands. Elusive. Very good pair of WRs. Second best group, behind USC, in the conference.

I think he's a RT or possibly a LT

Texas wouldn’t be recruiting Hawkins if they projected him as a guard.

Hopkins
I sure do hope that Searles recognizes that he is a liability at RT and moves him over to start along with Walters at Guard.
Either that, or Walters moves outside to RT or LT.
Help Me Out
In Case McCoy, I see a quarterback who regularly locks on a receiver, does not make reads, and consistently throws off the wrong foot. His arm strength is nothing special. Finally, I see no progression from the first third of the season to the final third of the season save for one drive against aTm.
In David Ash, I see a quarterback with a strong arm who is surrounded with dud receivers.
What am I missing here? What does the game film reveal? What do these guys do or not do in practice?
I am baffled why McCoy sees the field.
Both make poor decision, have poor mechanics and aren't very accurate
Case’s mechanics and footwork are dreadful, but Ash isn’t much better. Both need to realize they don’t have the skills to win games by themselves. I think whichever one emerges as a better game manager will emerge as the starter next season.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 4, 2011 5:33 PM CST up reply actions
Ash lacks experience and some confidence
McCoy seems to have confidence because he is a McCoy. My hope is Ash can build on what he did earlier for the bowl game.
Case hadn't turned the ball over like Ash had in his starts
So he had to have his chance. There was an erroneous notion that because he hadn’t turned it over, he was some kind of caretaker at the QB position. That is untrue; he has the mentality of a playmaker. You saw that in the Baylor game for both good and bad. Ultimately, he reverted to what he is and started throwing interceptions.
Other than psychologically, there is not a single aspect of quarterbacking that Case has over Ash. But he had a better mentality than David did, as was seen in the KSU game when Ash basically lost his mind on that second pick. If he can regain his confidence, he has the tools. He just needs to take what is there and be more accurate. If it’s a spot where he has to be Aaron Rodgers to make the completion, don’t throw the damn ball.
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
Don't agree at all
Case is far more accurate than Ash, at least right now. Perhaps a confident Ash is as accurate, but we don’t have that. If Ash plays against Baylor we lose 44-10, and I’m not sure how we get that 10.
I’m no Case homer, I hope Ash pulls it together in the offseason and wins the job in Spring/Fall, because with Case our ceiling is limited. But right now, there’s little question that Case is the better QB.

I am baffled
why we would recruit a guy like McCoy for the pro style offense that we are trying to run.
Also, why we let more talented QB’s like Wood and Gilbert leave town for this noodle arm.
When we recruited Case
We hadn’t decided on this offensive switch yet. The better question is why did we recruit him at all. I think you know the answer to that one.
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
McCoy
McCoy had a wild throwing motion yesterday. I am no Troy Aikman, or Gruden, but to me McCoy seemed to be jumping around and never set his feet. I feel if he would have set his feet instead of throwing his whole body and sould into the throw more positive things could have happened.
I tweeted yesterday
That whenever Case takes a snap, it ultimately ends with me wanting to say, “BALLIN’!!!” He’s a freestyle player. Should play And 1 Football, if it existed.

Early enrolles from the 2012 class
1) DLT

by billfromlaketravis on Dec 4, 2011 5:36 PM CST reply actions
Not the most inspiring list
Of that group, would only expect Sanders to see significant time next year, and even he may not be ready for full-time WR obligations. Obviously the Jucos getting in early would be huge, as they would both be expected to play early

After Baylor
IMHO Case is what he is and very little improvement should be expected.Ash seems to have more upside and could turn out to be aTebow clone or not.
It’s not fair to Brewer and Overstreet to expect them to come in and do what our present Qbs can’t.
If Mack can’t see what we see then he has used up his Mulligans and needs to move on.
I have to put most of the failure on old Greg Davis, who was supposed to be one of the best QB coaches in the nation.Gilbert was not only a failure on the field he ended up costing us Wood and Kinne and was a progress stopper for McCoy.
We won’t be lucky enough to find a Huepel like the Okies did but at least we should be able to find someone who can manage the game and give young pups a year to get ready.
Mack seems to have changed his tune on JUCOs and there must be somone out there that can help us.
Mack passed on RGIII and Jaquzz Rogers probably on the advice of Davis now those moves have come back to haunt us.
Do you think that all the present coaches will stay for next year?
With all the talent here and the class coming in we should be competative. What do you think.
Coaches
Believe it or not, yesterday could have helped Texas retain Manny Diaz. The luster is off his star.
I don’t think Harsin will be considered for a HC gig other than Boise State, and that position is currently occupied.
I think all the position coaches stay. Searels and Davis seem to be loving Texas.

I think he thought too much … trying to be something we weren’t. We were going to have to make plays/TO’s to win. He was too conservative. We had very little pressure on RG3.

Reggie Wilson
Suffered some kind of back injury in the Baylor game. It isn’t considered serious.
Both Jeffcoat and Wilson should be healthy by the bowl game.
Bergeron and Brown should also be healthy. I think John Harris should apply for a medical redshirt.

He actually has a decent motion. He just needs to take a Zanex. He can throw the ball, just needs to keep his feet under him. ASh’s issue are strictly mental at this pr
assuming the coaches think Brewer is the one and they intend to redshirt him
what do we do at the QB position until 2013?
In The Morning To You
Brewer
Personally, I’d be surprised if Brewer wasn’t in the mix for the starting QB as a redshirt freshman. Plenty of QB controversies on the horizon.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 4, 2011 5:41 PM CST up reply actions
i miss having one QB that we could all have faith in.
i think Brewer could be very good but i dont wanna see him play as a true freshman because we run the risk of breaking another QB’s confidence. so i guess next year we are stuck with either Case or David……would Mack take a transfer QB or JUCO?
In The Morning To You
QB
If the QB play doesn’t improve during the bowl practices or during the bowl game, then and only then does Texas MAYBE look at a JUCO or transfer. I think a transfer is more likely.

2012 Offense
Will be extremely young at the skill positions. As I said earlier, I expect Thomas Johnson, Cayleb Jones, Kendall Sanders and Marcus Johnson to play early. Johnathan Gray could be our best running back by OU. Brown should get better with another year in the weight room. Bergeron will have a more diverse role in the offense.
Whatever QB accepts the game manager role will the be the starter. I’d be surprised if Case ever accepted that role.
The OL should be very good with Hawkins and Cochran at T, and Hopkins, Espinosa and Walters making up the interior.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 4, 2011 5:40 PM CST reply actions
10 wins
I am basing that on an improved OL play and a big uptick in explosive plays. Hello Mr. Gray. Defense will be very good. QB hopefully will be better, but I would expect so mostly because the pieces around him
Also the fact that
Our schedule should be very, very favorable. To get to 10 wins, though, we have to have better QB play than we had this season.
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
nah, we would have been in the mix for 10 wins this year had we not screwed up managing our running backs.
the poor level of qb play this season is enough for 10 wins, it just doesn’t give much room for error or injury at other places on the field.
Injuries are to be expected though
Look at what OU and A&M had to go through as well. Can’t just assume we’re going to be healthy every year.
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
Before you answer that
I agree with healthy RB play we at least have 9 wins, but I don’t want to risk another season on that. Have to try to load up at as many positions as possible with as much depth and talent as possible. The stakes are just too high and there’s no downside to being as prepared as possible. Yeah, we got unlucky this year, but a year is a long time and you’re season is ruined with injuries like that. I’d rather at least have an option at QB that can win the game for us. I’m not even going to ask for us to have a prepared backup. I just want a prepared starter.
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
i’m saying that it’s not typical for that to happen and that all those injuries at the same spot are the reason we didn’t have a shot at 10 wins, not the QB play. QB play sucked but was good enough to give us a shot if not for the running back injuries which weren’t just your normal, every year set of injuries.
yes, i’m comfortable entering every season and saying that our top 3 runnings backs won’t all be hurt at the same time. and maybe the only time i’ll ever be wrong is this year.
2012 record
Honestly I think it depends on the NFL Draft. Weeden is gone, RGIII and Landry Jones could both leave. Blackmon THANK GOODNESS will be gone as will Ryan Broyles. That’s 5 players right there that torched Texas.
The new additions should be tough games, but both could be at home. OOC schedule is VERY winnable.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 4, 2011 5:50 PM CST up reply actions

10 wins should aboselutely be the goal. If all of the aforementioned players leave, Texas should be in contention for the conference title.

Can Cobbs and Edmond
replace Acho and Robinson? Or will it be someone else?
What about the safety position…who will step up there?
Replacements
Cobbs should be a helluva OLB at Texas, but replacing Acho will be tough.
Edmond should also be an excellent MLB, but Robinson has played well as a senior.
At safety, I pray Vaccaro comes back, and Phillips takes over for Gideon.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 4, 2011 5:54 PM CST up reply actions
Cobbs
Just my opinion, but I think he can surpass Acho. It will be very path dependent. I think he has a higher ceiling and could become special. Acho has just been so steady, with a couple great games. I expect to see a lot more volatility in the LB Corp next yr. I think talent wise we are better, but production and potential are not the same thing. So basically, I don’t think there is anyone who can say by the end of next yr will we better or worse at LB than this yr
I think Cobbs is a better athlete and better pass rusher
But give me Acho in every other category. I think Cobbs will be damn good at Texas. He can get to the passer.

Zabransky and Moore
To what extent were they coached up by Harsin – or were they outliers from the time they stepped on campus?
Biggest question is where Petersen ends and Harsin begins
Bryan can certainly claim credit for both, but so can Chris Petersen. I think it’s a little early to start judging Harsin. He inherited some below average personnel.

Any news on if Gray will enroll early??? also I think Connor Brewer can come in and start he looks much more polished and ready than both Mccoy and Ash.
Mccoy doesnt have the arm strength to be an effective qb at this level.
Ash just isnt ready nor do I think he could turn into an effective qb at the level that Texas needs their qbs to play to compete for National Championships.
Brewer has to be the guy, if not then Tyrone Swoopes !!!!!!
Gray
Johnathan is going to run track. He seems to really enjoy track. He will not enroll early. I’d like for him to enroll early, but at least he’ll be in good shape when he reports in June.
Brewer must redshirt. Texas should never play a true freshman quarterback again.
Harsin has a difficult evaluation deciding between Swoopes and Barrett. Texas won’t get both.

It’ll be tough to keep Ridgeway off the field.
Echols is so fundamentally sound, he could see time in nickel and dime packages. He will not make mistakes at Texas.

DT Malcom Brown likely will
Possibly Ridgeway at DE. I’m not too impressed with our defensive recruiting so far in 2012. Lot of guys that will need a lot of time to develop and aren’t going to scare people with their physicality or frame.

The offensive class is much better in the 2012 class
That being said, 2011 was a defense heavy class.

This is in stark contrast to our offensive recruiting
Which I think has been just about spot on, including the guys we are trying to close up shop with.

Brandon Moore could be a silent commit. Texas has a great shot of landing S Adrian Colbert. In the mix for Torshiro Davis. Trying to get Armstead on campus. Collins will also visit.

Wildcat
I think Gray can play QB in the Wildcat. He won’t throw, but I trust him to make good football decisions. Thomas Johnson could also be the trigger man in Wildcat. As could Kendall Sanders. Jalen Overstreet could be the best run / pass option. Texas has a lot of options in that formation.
I think the bowl practice and bowl game will determine the starting QB for next year.

bill mind explaning
the number we might take this class and how we would be able to get over 25 with jucos/early enrollees? short primer on how/when those count etc?
Sure
JUCOs are considered mid term enrollees and not part of the 2012 class. It’s a nice little loophole that other schools have used with a lot of success.
I think the highest number Texas could go would be 25 high school seniors and 2 JUCOS. Texas is at 21 as of tonight, with Hawkins looking imminent and Moore is possibly a silent commit. That’s 21/23 right there.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 4, 2011 6:38 PM CST up reply actions
Don't quote me on this
But early enrollees also might not count against the 2012 class. I’m not sure on the rule here. Regardless of the numbers, Texas is confident that will have all the spots they want to meet their needs.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 4, 2011 6:39 PM CST up reply actions
Unless Big 12 rules state differently
Early enrollees can count for either 2012 or for 2011, if you have space. Texas should be able to, assuming they are consistently counting their early enrollees to the previous class every time.
Texas will have room for the 2012 early enrollees
They could definitely count against 2011. I don’t think the class is headed for 32, but technically, it could go that high.

Problems between Harsin and Mack?
Sideline reporter indicated Ash was told he was coming in after Case’s interception at the end of the third quarter, then Mack is shown pushing Case into the sideline huddle to go into the game. Really enjoy these....thanks Bill but.....
Case McCoy is a coaches kid. But yet his footwork is awful, throwing mechanics awful and an extremely weak arm. He appears to be uncoachable, which to me is the worst trait that any athlete can have. How does this happen??
Case
Coachability should probably be a concern with Case at this point.
Not sure what happened with Case learning from his father. Crazy Legs is a cute nickname, but also an indication of Case’s awful footwork.
The bowl practice should help, if they don’t take with Case or Ash. It’s red alert time.

I seem to remember Connor Wood attending a camp of some sorts in his attempt to win the job last fall. I’d love to see Ash attend something like that. I really believe he has the tools if he can get his head right. I seem to think Nuke LaLoche is a good comparison.
Those camps aren't free and Texas can't pay for them
The Woods certainly have the means. I hope both Case and David do everything they can to get better in the off season.

OL and TE
Any word in the TE recruiting arena? Also, is Cochran going to stay at RT or do you think he goes LT because of his athleticism?
Guess at starting safeties next season?
Cochran is already LT
Vaccaro and Phillips at S. Thompson/Evans as the FS when Vaccaro is moved to nickel. Probably will start with Thompson ahead of Evans, but I think the latter has higher potential. We don’t have to worry any more about every WR in the country being faster than both of our safeties in nickel+ situations any more. Hip. Hip. Hooray.
Don’t expect anything from TE till 2013, when it will be on of the most interesting positions to watch in the class.

obviously he had no business being recruited in the first place, as UT could easily find a much better talented QB.
Is it safe to say his brother and his dad’s influence on the program is the only reason why he’s here? Who’s responsible for basically encouraging this toxic atmosphere of politics and nepotism? Isn’t that on Mack?

2012 vs. 2013 class
From what I can tell, it looks like it’ll be a small class that Texas will be able to take unless attrition is high (12 currently listed as juniors).
Is the talent higher in 2012 in terms of playmakers at WR than 2013? It sounds like we are going all in on Jake Oliver, until he makes a decision.
2012 is probably deeper and more talented at the top

As always, y’all have a productive work / school week. I’ll be back for Sundays with Bill next week. If news breaks during the Banquet, GOBR, GoHorns or myself will have something for y’all.
