No, Cal has not forgotten.

http://cache0.bigcartel.com/product_images/49289077/MuckBrown.jpg

Look for these shirts to be all over the Holiday Bowl. They are being sold online by a company called AfroPop. Here is the quote that goes with it:

Yeah, we haven't forgotten, Mack Brown. We'll never forget how you whined your way to the '04 Rose Bowl, depriving one of Cal's best teams ever, a chance to play in the Granddaddy of them all. And now that we've got you in the Holiday Bowl, this is the t-shirt we're going to greet you with. Go Bears!

So be prepared to be deluged by whiny Cal fans talking about '04 until the Holiday Bowl is over.

Aaron Rodgers is gone and the Stanford Band will be at the Fiesta Bowl.

Really, Cal?

The sad thing is that I was attending UT during ‘04. My family is from California and are rabid Cal fans. They talked crap that entire Christmas break leading up to the games (despite the fact only one uncle went to Berkeley). My dad called me the other day, after the bowls were announced, and started his “Cal will win” rant. I promptly went online to change my flight back to Austin to before the 28th. I’d rather watch that game with my friends and not my family. ’Tis the season……. Hook ’em.

Every time I feel down and depressed, I think of seven simple words by a true wise man, Matt Leinart: "I still think we're the better team" and I usually end up hurting myself by laughing so hard.

You choose your friends...

Other than the imperative to honor thy father and mother, I see no reason to regard family any differently than anyone else. I don’t particularly like my family members, but I do like the friends I’ve chosen based upon their actual merits. Enjoy the holidays and the football games in your own fashion, as you wish and without the drama of la familia.

That’s all you need to say (KABOOM!)… Hey, I keed, I keed…

The sad thing for me is that up until 2004 Texas was always my second favorite program… liked the uniqueness of the colors… big bad ass public school… like The Eyes of Texas… Texas was my adopted team. And then 2004 happened… It took a few years but I’ve sort of gotten over it… Don’t get me wrong, I’m PSYCHED about this game… but 2004 is receding into history like my hairline… sadly and irrelevantly…

You guys will never get it.

The Rose Bowl is the White Whale of Cal football. I was born in May 1959. The last time Cal played in the Rose Bowl was January 1959 — five months before I was born. That’s right, I’m 52 years old, and Cal has never played in the Rose Bowl since I have been alive. And as a third generation Cal grad, I have been a Cal fan for my entire life. I have waited my entire life for Cal to make it to the Rose Bowl. Like many Cal fans my age, my prayer is: “Please, God, Just Once Before I Die.” And then, after years and years and years of waiting, hoping, dreaming — there it was. I was Ahab at that moment when he hit Moby Dick with his harpoon. CAL WAS GOING TO THE ROSE BOWL! It was there. It was real. It was in our grasp. I had actually bought tickets! And then, it was gone . . . In a lifetime of incredibly painful memories courtesy of Cal athletics, it was the worst, the most horrific, the most depressing. For you, it was just another bowl game. For us, it was like Galahad having the Holy Grail snatched from his very fingertips. It’s like that story told by the Prophet Nathan to King David about the poor man who had a sheep he loved like a child, and the rich man who, instead of slaughtering one of his own hundreds of sheep, stole the poor man’s sheep and slaughtered it for his own table. With all your riches, you can never begin to understand what you did to us. Only Joseph Conrad came close. The Horror. The Horror.

you make it sound like the Rose Bowl meant nothing to us

Texas had never played there before. And the Rose Bowl that year gave us all hope for the next year and it reaffirmed everything Mack had been doing. in fact id say that without the momentum winning the Rose Bowl gave us we wouldnt have won the National Championship in 2005 and at Texas the most important thing is winning the Championship. especially since Texas hadent won one since 1970. so many years of being agonizingly close to one only to have it ripped away in a sudden shocking defeat all that was washed away in 2005 and the road to the promised land started in the 2004 Rose Bowl. so yes we can all sympathise with you because we all know what its like to be so close to what you want only to have it ripped away (hello 2009 Title Game & 2008 BCS selection night) but that Rose Bowl meant just as much to Texas if not more because it gave our team the confidence it needed to go out and win a championship the next year

Oh, I’m sure you were very happy to play in the Rose Bowl. But for Pac-10 schools and Big 10 schools it has a meaning it doesn’t have for anyone else, because it what we strive for every year. For the original Pac-8 schools especially, it has been our ultimate goal every year since 1916. A substantial majority of Cal fans would rather play in the Rose Bowl than in a national championship game. I have no bad feelings against Texas fans individually as a result of what happened to us (although I will hate Mack Brown with the fire of a thousand suns until the day I die or the day we reach the Rose Bowl — whichever comes first). But I really don’t think a school that has had the kind of success that Texas has had over decades when we have been sitting through 4-7, 3-8, 2-9, seasons year after year, can possibly imagine what it felt like to lose that Rose Bowl. And it cannot possibly have meant to you what it meant to us. That is just not possible. Cal fans are a sturdy bunch. We’re used to suffering. We have to be. But that was the worst. Ever.

we were more than just happy to play in the Rose Bowl

for Texas that was arguably the biggest win in school history since the Game of the Century up to that point (it was the biggest win for Texas in my lifetime for sure). to win the grand daddy of them all for the first time in school history against the winningest team in the history of college football was beyond huge for Texas. for Cal maybe a majority of you guys want the Rose Bowl i understand that. but for Texas there is no substitute for winning a Championship and if we had not won that Rose Bowl i have serious doubts as to wether or not the team could have won the Championship the next year.

I don't think it's the same

The Rose Bowl and the Pac-8/10/12 have been connected for decades. Going to the Rose Bowl was THE Goal for every Pac-10/Big-10 team before this BCS bullshit started. As this poster stated, he’s been following Cal for over 50 years hoping they could make the Rose Bowl and it hasn’t happened in his lifetime.

Was going to the Rose Bowl awesome for us? Of course. But we haven’t been trying to get to that specific bowl for over a half-century because it wasn’t a possibility until the BCS started. Even during the BCS era, it isn’t a realistic goal. zThe one time, we went to the Rose Bowl, we needed the Pac-10 or the Big-10 to send their champ to the National Championship while not advancing another BCS team so a spot could open up for a team from another conference. It worked out for us to get to the Rose Bowl that year and it was awesome. But it was kind of a fluke, not a yearly goal for the last 95 years. And for that reason alone, I don’t see how it could mean more to Texas than it would have to Cal..

I'm not sober.

You all van hate mack brown for what he did after the game. But remember one thing texas dropped in the human polls after he did that. If anything macks so called whinning helped cal in the human polls. We got the in the rose bowl because of the computer polls. The computer is not effected by the whining of mack. its pathetic that you need a blind eyed whipping boy in mack brown for the rest of your lives because you fell in computer polls.

Maybe you missed the whole point of the post. That all the anger and aggresion thats put toward mack brown is the wrong place. Its a unbiased computer equation that screwed you. So blaming macks whining when texas fell in the humam polls is wrong. Your havong hatred of a guy who if anything pleaded texas out of votes and made the gap smaller. Theres facts then theres espn.

Once, someone posted a devastating takedown of the Cal complaints against Mack Brown.

It culminated in, I believe, the fact that our rankings in the human polls went down after Mack’s politicking; it was the computers that got us into that Rose Bowl game. Anyone recall this or have a link?

I told the people of my district that I would serve them as faithfully as I had done; but if not ... you may all go to hell, and I will go to Texas. -- Davey Crockett

by pleaseplaykindle on Dec 7, 2011 4:08 PM CST reply actions

here you go. devastating.

Texas was done with its schedule on Nov. 26, after beating rival Texas A&M. Immediately thereafter, Brown started an endless media campaign on behalf of his No. 5-ranked Longhorns. His tactics also made the Cal-Southern Miss matchup something of a referendum on the Bears, whose game would be nationally televised on ESPN.

Perhaps affected by the pressure and expectations, the Bears did not play an impressive game, but nonetheless they won, 26-16. While Cal coach Jeff Tedford thought his team had done what it needed to secure the program’s first Rose Bowl berth since 1959, others weren’t so sure.

The Bears’ worst fears were realized when they fell from No. 4 to No. 5 in the final BCS standings as Texas snatched the coveted Rose Bowl berth. Voter defection carried the day. In the AP poll, Cal’s advantage over Texas shrunk from 85 points to 62. But the real story was the coaches poll.

In the penultimate standings, Cal held a 48-point lead over Texas. In the one that counted, it was ahead by a mere 5 points. In other words, no fewer than 20 coaches switched their placements of Texas and Cal. But more telling was that four coaches voted Cal No. 7 and two No. 8 — after a Bears victory, and behind 2-loss Georgia.
