Do you believe in Crist?
Dayne Crist, that is.
"The 6-4, 235-pounder from California possesses a laser arm and decent mobility, but mediocre numbers. He's completed 58% of his passes for 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He also ran for four scores."
I'm sold. I would guess Dayne's "mediocre numbers" are a sight better than McAsh's. If he's better than what we have now, and gives us time to develop Brewer/Overstreet and Ash, too, assuming Ash can be developed, why not bring him in? Crist coming in for one year shouldn't affect the freshmen negatively. If Ash leaves because we pick up a 1-year QB as a stop-gap, he must not have enough confidence that he can win the starting job as a junior in 2013. I think that would speak volumes as to his potential, or lack thereof. And if Case wants to transfer because he can't beat out the other 3 after Crist is gone, I will wish him well and have no regrets. Burntorangehorn might even approve of bringing in Crist because he's not a juco. If Longhorn Em's firm unlocks her shackles this weekend, maybe she can weigh in on this one for us, being a golden domer herself. I believe in Crist, and I pray to Crist and Mack for another early Christmas present.

My question
Does Crist believe in Texas? Has he shown any interest, or is this all speculation?

Honestly, I have no idea where that came from
I said it to my wife a couple years ago (hilarious in the context of the discussion) and it just stuck.
This would not be a fix,
he still has to sit out a year anyway due to transfer rules. If he transferred to a I-AA school he could play immediatley. Texas would be better off going after a JUCO player before Crist and even that is not a fix. Face it everyone we maybe F’d at QB for a couple more seasons.
I learned this about coaching: You don't have to explain victory and you can't explain defeat. Darrel Royal
It's my understanding that he would not have to sit out a year,
and could participate in Spring practices.
Crist graduates in a few weeks and has been given permission to seek a transfer. He’s currently in the process of determining the right fit for him so he can transfer in time for the spring semester. Because he’s graduating and has a year of eligiblity left, Crist does not have to sit out a year and can play immediately wherever he goes.
This quote is from http://www.wndu.com/sports/headlines/135218708.html.
How do you define “fix”? Is the “fix” to struggle through the same QB crap this year as we did last year? Four unprovens. Crist, assuming he is good enough to start, as I said in the post, will buy time for QB development. Much better than putting all of our eggs in the McAsh basket or starting a freshman before he is ready. Neither of those plan worked this year. Good God, man, have faith in Crist.
BTW: When I just copy and paste the link, it works. The link feature didn’t work.

Sorry, I did not know he was graduating.
I don’t know how you fix it, if I did I would not be sitting behind a desk right now typing this, but making millions of dollars fixing the QB situations at programs across the country. I am just saying that I do not believe a QB that got benched playing for a mediocre team is the answer to our QB situation. With that said, I could be wrong and he could be the answer. Mine is the opionion of just one Longhorn fan that is tired of watching horrendous quarterback play.
I learned this about coaching: You don't have to explain victory and you can't explain defeat. Darrel Royal
Amen
Longhorn fan that is tired of watching horrendous quarterback play.
IMO it will take at least until 2013 to have it “fixed.” So why not try something different for 2012? I don’t want to waste 2012 to fix 2013. We have too much talent. If I’m a senior next year, I dang sure wanna win in 2012. What’s wrong with 16 TDs vs. 9 INTs? Team passing stats so far this year? 14 TDs vs. 15 INTs. I would rather have Crist’s “mediocre” than our “horrific.”

Crist would seem to give us an answer to our dilemma. An expierenced QB, with decent stats who could safely pass 15-20 times a game…..this is assuming that Harsin doesn’t continue to call 40 pass games.
With the stable of backs next year, I’d like to see us throw about 10 times a game with at least 5 draws.

No, "nt whills" is his way of telling people that there is "no text" (nt) past the headline
Thus saving people the effort of opening up the whole post. Apparently back in “the old days” of the interwebs, you only got the headers of comments, and had to click another button to open the rest of it, thus the “nt” was a way to alert them that they needn’t bother, that there was “no text” past what was written on the headline. This would cut down on the pointless use of bandwidth, which was, back in the olden days, in short supply.

absolutely nada
but Crist isn’t the only transfer QB that has reached out to Texas in the last few days.
Hey, Hook Tech.
I know how you feel about this. Chime in.
See ya later, alligator and sheep-mater.
Don't mind if I do.
I don’t know much about Dyane Crist other than his stat line- haven’t seen him play. I don’t know, nor does anyone, if he’d be able to come in and – already behind the curve in learning Harsin’s system – win the starting role over Ash or McCoy, who have both had a significant head start in learning Harsin’s offense. Nor do I know if he would have any interest in coming to Texas, should we offer.
What I THINK I know is that the current staff has no interest in bringing in a transfer to fill the need at QB. I think they believe that they can get what they need out of Ash or McCoy as a game manager and 10-15 passes per game passer to go along with the multiple rushing attack we’ll be able to employ with our RB talent and what should be a nasty defense.
So, to conclude, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether Crist would represent an improvement over what we have just as much as it’s anyone’s guess as to whether Ash can show the strides needed to be successful during bowl practices and spring and fall camps. The only thing that seems clear is that none of the decision makers are looking at bringing in a transfer, so it seems to me that the point is moot. Moot, I say!
"The only sport that should be cried over is tee ball."
- don't remember who said it, but I like it.
From the "Big Cigar" in reply to Jesus Shuttlesworth's question about the QB future...
BC: Unlike the DT and RT juco we’re about to land, we’re not going into the juco-ranks for a QB, at least not that I’ve heard. The QB coming in from Arizona is hand-picked by Harsin and we think he can be the answer long term. We still don’t have the luxury to red-shirt him at this time unfortunately, so the Staff has told him to come in ready to compete. He’s not quite the athlete that Ash is but he’s got a strong enough arm and has come from a system that has him more prepared to play right away.
"The only sport that should be cried over is tee ball."
- don't remember who said it, but I like it.
I understand Brewer may be the answer,
but will he be the answer this year? Not feelin’ warm and fuzzy about it myself. Why waste the year? Brewer can take reps with the second team, most of whom will at some point be first team when he is QB1. He’ll get his reps. Just don’t understand why we can’t try to win in 2012, dag nabbit. Don’t think it would hurt anything to bring someone in. All potential is to the upside. Somebody in Bellmont needs to wake up and figure this out. The only justification I could accept for not bringing in a juco/transfer-with-immediate-eligibility QB would be if none of them are worth a shit.
Jus’ sayin.’
Have fun tonight.

Just watched some youtube clips of Dayne Crist.
What I’ve seen so far is he’s accurate when he can set his feet, but throwing on the run is not pretty. At all. I wonder if Harsin has noticed this and is tempering expectations on how much progress our O-line can make in pass protection. The fact that we have a RT coming in to enable us to slide Hopkins over to RG is a huge plus, but we don’t know how this incoming RT is going to play yet. Basically, if we were to get only marginally improved pass protections over this year, Crist might be a disaster.
I think the Karam guy from Tech might be a better solution considering the combining of weakness that bringing Crist in would represent.

Double your misery, Wiscy
Just think how close we all came to BCS non-troversy (that’s a new term I just made up, I think), if those two hail Mary’s find the ground instead of the arms of a waiting receiver? Of course, we’d still have to endure the whole “SEC is better than the B1G” pablum (again), but at least it’d be better than a sham of a rematch we’re now stuck with.
That’s just got to be agony for Wisconsin fans. But, as with most B1G fans, they’ve got their Rose Bowl, and that’s probably enough – especially since it was served with that nicely chilled revenge in the B1GCG.

Mack has to at least give the impression that he is looking
If QB play is the same, or close to the same, next year, and Mack does not bring in anybody, or at least appear to be looking, then I think there will be a major clamoring for his dismissal the following year. It would be negligent to not fix something that badly needs fixing, which could result in another poor to mediocre season for 3 consecutive years.
Come on Mack. What would it hurt to bring in somebody? Case transfers? I think that would be a good thing. It can’t be much worse that what we have already.

“We’re looking at it right now because our quarterbacks are still young,”
“Today, we were just talking about the possibilities of what would be out there or what we’d look at. Or do we just continue in the light we’re in now? We’ll have another staff meeting Sunday and pull together some more thoughts than we have right now.”

I think they'll consider
Jacob Karam, Bo Wallace (visiting Ole Miss today), Dayne Crist (visiting KU today), and Ryan Mossakowski.
gotta admit I was suprised to hear Mack’s open comments last night.
I'm having issues as to which side I'm leaning.
I agree that something needs to be done with the travesty that is our Quarterbacking crew. I’m just not sure as to what needs to happen. I agree with Hook Tech in that Crist would be coming into a system where he has no knowledge and will be competing against guys who have been in the system for a while. While he might not be a risk to take, I don’t think he’ll actually compete. The next 2 weeks in bowl practices will be ridiculously important in the growth of both McCoy and Ash. I, for one, am pulling for Ash. No need to expound on that though, seeing as you probably already know this.
I can’t imagine that over the course of time and coaching, Ash won’t at least be a serviceable QB. I’m still in the notion of thinking that Youth has to do more with his mistakes then general talent, or lack thereof. Thank god I’m not a coach.
Me: "Hunny, how much is our Wedding budget?"
Fiance`"No, You can't have Craig Way call our wedding.."

Not sold on Ash.
Rivals and Scout both rated Ash 3 stars and the 21st best QB prospect in the country his senior year. And I’ve seen him play. I don’t want him to fail. Just haven’t seen sufficient evidence that he will succeed, even as a serviceable QB.
See ya later, alligator and sheep-mater.

I can see why you'd have that opinion
and I think for the most part, readers here will agree with you. I just like being in a different camp I suppose. The next 2 weeks and summer work outs will tell a lot. If Ash steps up and takes a leadership role and puts extra time in with receivers, then I think he comes back and shocks a lot of people and plays well. If Ash concedes and does just what is necessary to train, I think he stays in his regressed form.
I would agree that both QB’s at this point in time are NOT the answer…For the time being. I certainly don’t think throwing Brewer in is a smart move. Oh the joys of wondering what could and will happen.

20 picks in a single season?? two or more in 7 of the games?
“Another record breaker highlights the First-Team defensive squad. Rochester Community & Technical College (Minn.) defensive back Caleb Leichtnam set a new NJCAA single-season record for interceptions with 20 picks, including two he returned for touchdowns. The freshman from Grand Medow, Minn., had two or more interceptions in seven contests, and three or more picks in three of those games.”

Apparently, the meeting that Mack & the coaches had on Sunday about a JUCO or Graduate Transfer QB has led to them pursuing Jacob. This isn’t to say that Jacob will ultimately be the guy to come in and be the new starting QB……but this should signal to everyone that Texas has made the decision to bring someone in.
