I actually liked Texas a lot. My dad wants me to commit, but I’m going to take a while to think about it. I like Texas more than Texas A&M, but those are the only two places I’ve been."

Seems like a smart kid

Definitely less impulsive than I was at that age. Any idea where else he is considering?

I wish I could play little league now... I'd kick some fuckin' ass.

Texas and Texas A&M

Not sure if he will take over visits. I guess it depends on how much influence his father ends up having on him.

Care to handicap this one GOBR? I know Estelle said somewhere around his senior season for a commitment, but we could sure use the momentum right now.

Texas is in great shape

In terms of a timetable, I think it depends on whether Estelle decides he wants to take other visits. If not, I think this happens and I think he chooses the Longhorns.

Last night...

I was perusing through the channels last night and stumbled onto the title game between Lake Travis and Denton Ryan. After the spirited debate that ensued after the committment of De La Torre, I was interested in seeing the young man; bluntly, I was not impressed; throughout the game it was obvious that the Cavs were not going to be running much up the middle so there weren’t that many plays to evaluate him fairly on. Nevertheless, it was pretty obvious that the young man was not able to come off the blocks of the O-line for Travis. I know that it was just one game but to say that he is Texas good right now would be lying; in the future, no one really knows but as of last night within the context of one game, I would say no.
Sorry this was off the subject for Estelle, just wanted to give my opinion.

Watched the second half.

Would agree with the assessment that DLT had some issues getting off blocks, which is not uncommon at his age. Other than that, couldn’t evaluate too much, especially since Ryan had the ball for about six minutes to start the half. Would give him an incomplete for the second half — he made the plays he should have made and besides getting off blocks, it wasn’t like he was missing tackles or taking bad angles.

Edwards didn't look Texas good in that game either

That is the only game I’d seen of him this year and other posters swear that this game was an anomoly. Perhaps a little of that with DLT too?

by Horncasting on Feb 15, 2011 5:03 PM CST up reply actions

Agree that Edwards didn't really flash

I think a lot of that had to do with LT using a running back to chip him and essentially double team him most of the game.

LT's game plan re: Edwards was excellent

Edwards was neutralized by smart blocking and the LT pass quick scheme.

In Ryan’s run to the championship, Edwards was the cause of numerous big plays for the Ryan D. If anyone cares to follow up, check out Edwards’ effect on the Ryan vs Waco Midway, another very strong team.

In that game, he occupied Midway’s attention and thereby freed up the DE opposite him to make several nice plays. Think of Kindle’s effect on Acho’s game in the 2009 season.

I watched last night as well....

….and figured I’d see both of them dominate. Then again, I’m probably spoiled from watching these recruiting videos that have one amazing play after another. I guess in a real game there’s only a handful of those sensational plays at most. Unless you Johnathan Gray in the state title game of course.

constant second guessing of DLT

is really starting to rub me the wrong way. Year after year Texas has recruited handfuls of physical specimens that don’t amount to much as college football players. Yet, in those same years, other less athletic or “talented” 2 or 3 star players do very well at the TCU/A&M/OU/TT/OSU. Thus, measureables are not the only determinant of a football player. Furthermore, teams need guys with intangibles, like leadership skills which are oftentimes overlooked by scouting services. I’m not necessarily saying that DLT has intangibles, I’m just saying that coaches do look for these things.

So yes, there is an argument for the fact that DLT may not necessarily be the most awesome athlete to grace the 40 acres. However, those making this argument need to accept the fact that athleticism on its own does not define the quality of the prospect.

And last but not least, Texas is going to have a class of 15 to 20 recruits when this is all said and done. To most DLT is going to be the only one who doesn’t appear to be “Texas good enough” to be there. Let’s just accept the fact that there may be more to his recruitment than meets the eye and congratulate the kid on joining our family.

Welcome to Texas, DLT. I promise you we aren’t all as*holes.

I think you're missing the arguement...

its not whether DLT is good enough for Texas its whether he’s good enough to warrent an early February, DLT isn’t bad for Texas but the practice of offering kids so early hasn’t been great for the programs as a whole. Two outside sources evaluated this process and ulitmatley decide we should limit this to only elite players. If we were going by the old way of offering everyone as soon as possible I would have no problems with DLT, but since we were changing the way we recruit I personally wished we would have waited until at least the Spring game or even the start of the season to give him an offer which would allow our coaches to better evalute hiom and the other talent at that position.

by TowerPower on Feb 16, 2011 11:59 AM CST up reply actions

I think I'm right on point...

I’m questioning the assumption that a player is “elite” solely because of athletic ability. By making this assumption, you draw the conclusion that the coaches should wait to “better evaluate him” , implying that the coaches made a mistake by offering. First, let’s not discount what DLT has accomplished in high school. Second, I think Mack did take a fresh look at his program and he saw that among other things we lacked “leadership”. DLT is a coach’s son and a leader on his team. This, combined with his results probably made him an “elite” fit in Mack’s new program. Let’s give him, and Mack, a chance.

'12* more inspiring than '11, I'm not so sure about that...

Greenlea and Flowers are pretty solid but add in another decent name in 2012 and I’d give it to ya, Cochran may turn out to be Texas good but I have BIG doubts about Hutchins and Doyle, prime examples of who not to give early offers to. That’s one of the reasons I’m not freaking out about A&M having commits 7 to our 5, and to be frank I wish we had waited on DLT until we had vetted a few more prospects but Mack thinks he needs a few sure things to get the ball rolling.

by TowerPower on Feb 15, 2011 5:48 PM CST up reply actions

Pardon me, I meant the 2010 vs 2011 JR Day hauls

If Riser and Estelle are the first two that drop, they would constitute a more inspiring start to OL recruiting for this class as compared to the previous class.

I’m pretty sure Greenlea didn’t commit during the Jr Days period last year.

Whatever, I’d be stoked if Estelle committed really soon. It’s also nice to see that Mack has allowed Searles to go OOS. Reported offers to OL in Florida, Arizona, and one other that escapes me.

The kid in NC

Got an offer as well. OOS OL could be huge, but they will be tough to get

Hutchins

is probably the most athletic of the group and can really move. Let’s see how many solid pounds S&C can put on him during a reshirt year or maybe two years. Doyle will be a bigger project. But DLT was good enough for Muschamp, I believe.

Just throwing a word in for these guys that haven’t hit campus yet. A lot of people wondered aloud why we picked a guy named Colt McCoy.

We have a 12th man and he's Bryan Harsin

Re: DLT

Mack Brown apparently told him back on September 1st that Texas was going to offer, so I have to assume that Muschamp was on board.

Maybe DLT reminded Muschamp of himself?

I don’t think it’s that big of a travesty that he was offered. Maybe he’s a late bloomer.

don't get me wrong...

I’m not upset or mad or whatever about any of our recruits I think its a strong class and the decommit of Westerman makes these OLinemen even more valueable, however I am simply pointing out that if we had waited to offer these non-slam dunk guys like Hutchins/Cochran/Doyle until midway through their Senior years I would be more sure of them that they were Texas good and there were no better options, but instead we offered them in Feb. and passed on a few guy who would have been upgrades simply because we had no room. While I know Hagerty wasn’t in the bag we could have at least stood a chance had we waited on these other guys plus it leaves room for any surprising Seniors not on our radar in Feb, and that I personally feel that DLT is in the non-slam dunk category but that is just my opinion, if both Muschamp and Brown liked him obviously there’s something there.

So, now we Longhorns know what it is like recruiting in Februrary

When you don’t go to a bowl game! Not fun, but we have a year to make it right. Let’s NOT do that again.
