Texas Recruiting 2012: Defensive End Big Board Update

Needs -- Two or three

Star-divide

Quick take
Mario Edwards
Denton Ryan
Visited Feb. 12
Offered
5%
  1. Florida State
  2. Texas

2/15: Unexpected Feb. 12 visit was good news for Texas, but still a lot of ground to make up for Longhorns.

2/10: Possibly the best player in the state, the 6-5, 260-pound Edwards is an elite athlete at his position and solid technically for his age. Video. Only planned visit this spring is to Florida State, his current leader and his father's alma mater.

Hassan Ridgeway
Mansfield
Feb. 13
Offered
85%
  • Texas
  • LSU
  • Texas A&M
  • TCU

2/15: Did not commit as expected, but his coach does not think his recruitment will draw out very long.

2/10: Also on the TE Big Board, but mostly as filler there. Young for his class and his coach believes he has some physical upside left. Good athlete. Video. Plans on committing soon.

Devonte Fields
Arlington Martin
Feb. 26
Likely ?
  • Texas
  • Baylor
  • Kansas
  • Oklahoma
  • Texas A&M
2/15: Missed JD1 due to transportation issues. Perhaps strongest candidate to receive offer of JD2 attendees because of JD1 invite. Former teammate Danzel Williams is a 2011 Oklahoma commit. 6-2, 220. No film is available for Fields.
Taiwan Johnson
Manvel
Feb. 26
Possible ?
  • Texas
  • Texas A&M
2/15: Surfaced on the radar with news of his Junior Day invite. Good size at 6-3/225. Good first step and top-end speed. Has the motor to fight through blocks. Good striker with some natural knee bend. Lateral quickness not as good as his straight-line speed. Video. Strong offer candidate.
Glynn Cheeks
Manvel
Feb. 26
Unlikely ?
  • Texas
  • Missouri
  • Texas A&M
  • UTSA
2/15: Like his teammate, Cheeks surfaced on radar with news of Junior Day invite. 6-3, 205. Not quite as quick as Johnson, but shows strong ability to read and react by disrupting pass lanes and diagnosing screens. Takes a couple steps to reach top speed. Can re-direct to make plays. Smart player. Video
Caleb Bluiett
Beaumont West Brook
Feb. 26
Possible

?

?

2/15: Mr. Bluiett was nice enough to contact me and let me know that film on Caleb should be up soon. Looking forward to seeing it.

2/10: Well, Scout says he's quick. And Rivals says he's 6-3, 235. So there ya go.

Michael Richardson
DeSoto
Feb. 26 (likely will not attend)
Unlikely  Committed to Texas A&M? 2/15
  • Texas
  • Oklahoma
  • Oklahoma State
  • Texas A&M
  • Texas Tech
  • Tennessee

2/15: May have committed to Texas A&M, but it's not clear if that's official yet.

2/10: Explosive athlete who can change direction well, but undersized at 6-2, 230. Video. Projects better as a Buck end like Dravannti Johnson than as a pure 4-3 DE. Reportedly an excellent student.

Eric Davis
Tyler John Tyler
No
N/A N/A
  • Texas
  • LSU
  • Oklahoma
  • Oklahoma State
  • Texas A&M

2/15: This one sounds like it's down to A&M and Oklahoma State. Still no interest from Texas.

2/10: As quick as Richardson, but with better size at 6-3, 240. Seems like a take based on his combination of size and athleticism, so it's strange he doesn't have Junior Day invite.

Outstanding offers -- Mario Edwards, Hassan Ridgeway

Timetable --

  1. Edwards -- Whichever post-season all-star game he attends.
  2. Ridgeway -- Soon.

Initial update

Moving forward -- Edwards will have a scholarship offer until he makes his decision and Ridgeway will decide quickly enough that he won't impact other offers going out. The question now is which of the three Feb. 26 invites get an offer. Without knowing much about Bluiett, it's impossible predict what will happen with him, but the thought here is that one of Cheeks and Johnson will get an offer, with Johnson looking more likely based on film. Once again, without knowing much about which schools they favor, it's difficult to get a read on which one will commit.

The odds are, however, that by the end of the second Junior Day, Texas has at least one defensive end commitment. On top of that, the defensive end position appears deeper now than it did several weeks ago, so it looks like the Longhorns should have some options at the position.

Agreed GOBR, Fields should be a target. It’d be nice if Texas emerged from JD2 with Fields and Ridgeway as commits.

The Eric Davis thing is strange. A kid from Tyler showing no interest in Texas. Anomaly.

I wish Oscar Giles was offering OOS studs ala Stacy Searels. Hamilton and Savage have shown some interest in Texas, but both are strong side DEs, GOBR have any quick ends expressed interest in Texas.

I think Texas should take 3 DEs and of course leave the door open for Edwards.

Don't know of any other OOS DEs to have expressed interest.

Frankly, I’m not sure how good a guy like Savage is. There isn’t any film available of him — it might be that he’s not any better than the in-state prospects. Can’t say that for sure, but I do think there is a certain amount of romanticizing OOS players.

there is...

It’d be nice to snag an occasional Jadeveon Clowney or Austin Sefarian-Jenkins. We should go after the top 50 nationally and be more choosy with the in-state guys. Of course this is a terrible time to propose this given our JD haul.

Really Big Board?

Hey GoBR, I love referencing back to your recruiting notes when reviewing prospects, but with the boards all divided up its difficult to use them as a reference tool, I was wondering if you’ve considered making a really big board like you did last year or using a permanent reference page or protected common document where you could easily update a few things as the recruiting cycle continues.

Yeah

I’ll probably put together a Big Board that has all the positions together here when I update the ones that need updating.

Questions

Why is Johnson a good size at 6-2 225, but Richardson is undersized at 6-2 230?

Also, is Edwards a surefire DE? 260 in the middle of his jr. year sure does seem to project to DT. His weight is closer to D. Jackson and Q. Russell thank Jeffcoat, Wilson or Reed. Hell, he is way bigger than the last few DE’s we slid inside in Daniels, Mims and even Okafor. For that reason I’ve never viewed him as a must have at a critical position. (Not that he isn’t a take all the way).

Edwards is 260 because he is 6'5''

His physique is like a young Orakpo.

Edwards

is also super thick in his lower body. More like a DT there than DE.

Orakpo was 220 as a HS Sr.

Edwards is much, much closer to the size of Keeston Randall, than he is to the size of Orakpo when all were in high school.

I can see the ambiguity

I’m not saying Edwards looks like Orakpo when he was the same age.

To me

Height is more important at this point in their development. You can pack on the weight assuming their frame is capable. That’s why I like Ridgeway, Edwards and Fields. The data I’ve seen has them all at 6’4. I would prefer 6’7 though. :)

Where do you get the best measurables for these guys? GOBR has Fields at 6’2 above and I saw him listed at 6’4. What is right?

by chupita on Feb 16, 2011 9:54 AM CST up reply actions

Sorry.

Johnson is 6-3.

And yeah, there is a lot of talk that Edwards may not end up at DE, as he’s certainly not going to stay at about 265 pounds as he matures and gets older. Saw the comparison to Lamarr Houston today somewhere for Edwards and I think it’s kind of fair. Definitely a power end who could move inside and be a devastating three tech.

That would be awesome

Lamarr was a great team player, not to mention a straight up beast on the line.

Technically

He said 6’3" for Johnson, not 6’2". 6’3" seems to often seen as the cut off between DEs with decent/good height and DEs that are a bit short (i.e. 6’2").

Devonte Fields

I see him listed as 6’4/225? Is that correct?
