Texas Recruiting 2012: Linebacker Big Board Update
Needs -- Two or three

Quick take |
| Peter Jinkens |
Dallas Skyline |
Feb. 26 |
Highly likely |

|
2/25: Was not able to make JD1. No longer has a committable offer to A&M. Said that Texas could be in the lead if they offer this weekend, as expected. Commitment of Thomas Johnson probably helps the Longhorns. 2/11: Off the charts athletically, Jinkens is considered raw prospect, as he spent much of junior season at RB. Natural striker with fantastic lateral quickness and short-area burst. Video 1 and 2. Offer from Muschamp tells you everything you need to know about Jinkens. Must have. Skyline connections help both Texas and Oklahoma. |
| Tim Cole |
Brenham |

2/25: Making his third visit in less than a month to Texas. In town for the FBU camp. Still expected to commit to A&M in March. 2/11: Drew comparison to Aaron Benson from Hookem.com's Jeff Howe. Good athlete, solid striker, and known as smart, instinctive player. Video. Higher on Texas than teammate Malcolm Brown. Visited Austin in late January. Will likely make spring commitment. |
| Alex De la Torre |
Denton Ryan |
Feb. 13 |
Offered |
Committed to Texas (2/12/11) |
|
2/25: Instant analysis and scouting report. 2/11: Son of the Denton Ryan head coach. Smart, tough football player. Only 6-0 tall, 220 pounds. Average athlete. Second-best LB on his team. Would commit on spot if offered. Does not currently report any offers. |
| Glynn Cheeks |
Manvel |
Feb. 26 |
Unlikely | N/A |
|
2/25: Dropped from the DE Big Board and added to the LB Big Board because colleges are recruiting him as an OLB. Has speed to play position. 2/15: Like his teammate, Cheeks surfaced on radar with news of Junior Day invite. 6-3, 205. Not quite as quick as Johnson, but shows strong ability to read and react by disrupting pass lanes and diagnosing screens. Takes a couple steps to reach top speed. Can re-direct to make plays. Smart player. Video. |
Moving forward -- It's a big weekend for the recruitments of both Cole and Jinkens. Cole is in town once again with close friend Malcom Brown in tow, though the fact that both are coming for the FBU camp dampens optimism that Texas has a serious chance with either, especially since both made yet another visit to College Station for the basketball game earlier this week. Cole is still considered a heavy A&M lean, but has not publicly named favorites.
It's also a big weekend for Jinkens, who has already had some ups and downs in his recruitment. Any rumors of having a handler appear to have died down and it looks like Texas could take the lead with him due to the commitment of his teammate Thomas Johnson and due to A&M telling him that he no longer has a committable offer, apparently due to being full at the position, with a final spot held for Tim Cole. In other words, the Aggies seem pretty confident that the Brenham linebacker will join his high school teammates in College Station. There's also an outside shot that Jinkens could commit this weekend, but Florida still seems to remain a player in this one.

Jinkens would be a nice get
Texas has to like their chances with Jenkins. All signs are pointing to him committing this weekend.
Cole is impossible to read. Hold a spot for him, but seriously explore other options.
GOBR assuming Jinkens commits and Cole commits elsewhere, where does Texas look for another linebacker?
With Tevin Jackson finally joining the team, is the 2012 LB magic number closer to 2 than 3?

Yeah if we don't land Cole then I say close up shop after Jinkens...
The Manvel boys look good on tape but the competition they play is just so weak that I’d be nervious to give either of them offers unless they just blow the coaches away in camp…
Could see Texas stopping at two
Not many names out there for 2013 yet so it’s hard to know what the class will be like next year. Seems fairly deep this year, but coaches have to decide if guys like Damien Neroes, Brian Nance, or Glynn Cheeks are worth taking a look at if things don’t work out with Cole.

I really want Cole...
I feel more opptimistic about his multiple visits than GoBR I say aournd 25% UT 75% A&M which is more than MB2, if the Brenham boys are just going to A&M I wished they would just announce it, they obviously are having some doubts or hesistations, hopefully Mack, Manny, and Bo can wow them this weekend and make it a horse race.
Anyone else impressed with Jenkins running the ball?
He has surprising shakes and a good burst for a big guy. I wouldn’t mind having him lineup at FB in certain situations.
the man, the myth, the legend.

Don't need him at FB

I think A&M made a mistake by passing
On Jinkens. He plays with an attitude that would help any team. He has size issues but in the 3-4 you don’t need huge LBs

is it really an ultimatum?
if 10 different LBs want to commit, you cannot take all 10, because there are other team needs. jinkens looks legit, but at some point you have to draw the line, and it looks like jinkens might get left out
There's A Spirit... - an A&M blog
Most importantly, it’s how the potential recruit takes it. He may see the reality of it, that if he waits too long someone else may take his spot. He may see it as an ultimatum and not take that well. I’d prefer that for the higher regarded recruits, the coaching staff leave out all mention of timeframe to commit. That’s just my opinion of course.
Guy has a huge frame
And would be perfect as a 3-4 OLB with his freaky athleticism once he puts some weight on, IMO. If you run 4 LBs all the time you need to recruit more LBs, it’s that simple. He’s a much better fit for the A&M defense than a guy like Tim Cole, who’s basically a 4-3 WLB all the way (like Keenan Robinson before he gained 30 pounds of muscle), but I can understand you have to take him if he’s going to bring Malcom along with him.

One of my med school classmate is Cole's cousin
She said that the family wants him to go to Texas, but i think bunch of his buddies are going to A&M, and he thinks he would feel more comfortable in College Station.
However, it sounded like the family has the ultimate decision on Cole.
COACH BOOM BABY!!
