Texas Recruiting 2012: Second Junior Day Primer/Open Thread
We talkin' 'bout practice.Though the second Junior Day is generally considered the day when the second-tier prospects come into Austin to receive their offers, there is one major advantage JD2 has over JD1 and that's practice. The Longhorns will have their third practice of the spring Saturday and the recruits in attendance will be able to see how the coaches interact with the players and get a better sense of what it's like to play football at Texas.
In fact, the ability to watch practice is probably in large part what has brought the first commitment of the class into town, quarterback Connor Brewer. The same is likely true for local product Cayleb Jones, who will be attending his second Junior Day and will have a chance to talk to get to know Brewer, who could be his quarterback at Texas, and to watch the other players who may line up under center in 2012 and beyond. Another commit, defensive end Hassan Ridgeway, is also expected in town.
The attendees. Here's a list of the confirmed attendees, followed by the prospects who were invited, but will not attend.
- Connor Brewer, Chaparral (AZ) QB
- Cayleb Jones, Austin High WR
- Camrhon Hughes, Harker Heights OL
- Paul Boyette, Humble DT
- Malcom Brown, Brenham DT
- Zorrell Ezell, Humble DT
- Hassan Ridgeway, Mansfield DE
- Caleb Bluiett, Beaumont West Brook DE
- Taiwan Johnson, Manvel DE
- Peter Jinkens, Skyline LB
- Tim Cole, Brenham LB
- Nick Coleman, SA East Central CB
- Bryson Echols, DeSoto CB (Friday visitor and commit)
Invited but will not attend
- John Michael McGee, Texarkana Texas OL
- Devonte Fields, Arlington Martin DE
- Anthony Smith, Houston Westfield DT
- Glynn Checks, Manvel LB
- Justin Thomas, West-Orange Stark CB
- DeCarlos Renfro, West-Orange Stark CB
- Corey Coleman, Richardson Pearce ATH
- Kendall Sanders, Athens ATH
Playing the prediction game. Some thoughts on what might go down at the second Texas Junior Day.
- Most likely to receive offers: Malcom Brown, Peter Jinkens, Camrhon Hughes, Caleb Bluiett, Kendall Sanders.
- Most likely to commit: Camrhon Hughes, Caleb Bluiett, Paul Boyette, Nick Coleman.
- Most likely not to attend: Kendall Sanders.
- Biggest surprise: Despite his incredible film, there isn't a ton of buzz around an offer going out to Devonte Fields, who may be the best pure edge rusher in the class. Not offering Fields would look like a major mistake on the part of the Texas coaching staff.

Have already moved
Anthony Smith from the attending to the not attending list.
Also, there is a report out there that Kendall Sanders won’t make it in today. That report is unconfirmed at this time.

Agree on Fields GOBR
Fields is a quick end while Bluiett is strong side end. They have different skill sets. An offer to one shouldn’t effect the other.
Where is the Kendall Sanders no show report coming from? Not a good sign if true. A lot of people have speculated that if Sanders is offered as an athlete, he might flip his commitment to Texas.
No big deal on Anthony Smith making it down. A lot of the guys that know they won’t receive Texas offers are skipping Junior Day 2.

From the OB message board
Someone says that they heard Sanders tells the Athens newspaper that he won’t attend. The sites haven’t been able to confirm anything with Sanders yet. The guess here is that the Oklahoma State coaches are pressuring Sanders not to come in today.

I wouldn’t expect anything less from Golf P***k.
Does Sanders realize he is an elite prospect? If he’s using Okie State as insurance, and Okie State pulls his offer because he attends Junior Day 2, who cares. Sanders will pick up dozens and dozens of other offers.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Golf P***k was using some negative recruiting on Sanders:
Come to Oklahoma State Kendall we’ll be the only school that keep you at wide receiver. If you go to Texas they’ll let you practice at WR for about 5 minutes before they send you to the Cornerback Salt Mines.

Aggies obviously have a ton of commits
but Sanders and Addison are probably better than the guys that A&M has overall. Basically a quantity versus quality argument. Would give A&M the edge right now because there’s good depth in the class, even if they don’t have a headlining star yet, which will probably chance here pretty soon if Cole and Brown become Aggies, as expected.

I think Burton made a comment that Texas and Corey Coleman are looking for the right weekend for a visit. It might have been a mutual decision for Corey to miss Junior Day 2 and then bring him down later.
I’d love to Corey get an offer. Coleman is the second best 2012 in state athlete projected to play corner in my mind.

Yep they’re long shots. I saw a very small blurb on Smackover, Arkansas Jeff Savage having Texas connections. However, Savage is already 6’3" 260 and runs a 4.82, I think he grows out of being a DE.
Channing Ward allegedly has ties with Diaz as Manny recruited him while at MS State.
Jelani Hamilton likes Texas and wants to hear from them. I don’t think he has any Texas ties or connections with the coaching staff.
Off the top of my head the 3 mentioned above might be the OOS DEs Texas are looking at. All our strong side DEs.
Yep, all the OOS DEs are long shots which makes the Fields situation all the more puzzling. Texas needs a quick side DE right? Is Dr. Johnson dominating in Spring Practice?

Here's what I'm thinking about Mack's plan with Boyette.
With Norman already committed, that leaves one or two spots left at defensive tackle in the class. I think the coaches want to be able to hold a spot for Javonte Magee, so that puts Boyette on the borderline of receiving an offer, especially given that Malcom Brown hasn’t committed yet to A&M. My guess is that Mack meets with Brown first to gauge whether or not Texas has a shot with him. If Brown says no, then the Longhons offer Boyette and then hold a spot for Magee to close out recruiting at the position.

GOBR any chance that Fields makes it down for a visit at a later date? Any possibility that Texas is slow playing Fields?
by billfromlaketravis on Feb 26, 2011 12:19 PM CST up reply actions
I guess it's possible.
Not sure why the staff would want to wait to evaluate him. I think Texas needs 3 DEs in the class and I have Bluiett as an offer/commitment today, so that would leave one other spot open. Maybe the coaches do want to wait on Mario Edwards and see what happens with him this spring before making a move on Fields.
I like Bluiett and would consider him a good take, but I think Fields fits more of a need and is the better athlete. If the coaches are waiting on Edwards to go after Fields, the question is whether or not Fields’ recruitment lasts long enough for Texas to get back into it with him. Not really sure where Fields stands at this point, though he could certainly commit to Oklahoma if the Sooners decide they want him.

by billfromlaketravis on Feb 26, 2011 12:22 PM CST up reply actions
My guess is that the coaches are more interested
in scheming around the guys that they have and taking the best athletes along the defensive line. I don’t think the distinction is particularly important in the end because the Longhorns are probably going to be pretty multiple with their fronts moving forward.

GoBR – Can you say whether or not MB2 was offered today or does the Boyette offer/commit answer my question that MB2 was not offered?
Havent seen anything about Brown
Suspect that the offer to Boyette is a sign that Texas doesn’t have much confidence in getting Brown. Ultimately, whether Brown has a Texas offer or not probably doesn’t matter too much, but at this time there doesn’t seem to be any information out there about an offer.

I think Boyette receiving an offer tells us all we need to do know on MB2. You have to think MB2 said thank but no thinks. Again all logic and common sense there, no inside information.
I know Cole’s Mama loves Texas because it’s a stronger academic school. Something tells me Mama or some other factors are driving Cole’s 3 visits to Texas in a month.
