The "Don't Crap The Thread" Open Game Thread - Texas vs. K-State

Email To BON Editors, January 27, 3:02pm, regarding expectations for 2010/11 Texas b-ball...

"I'd rather run around in a lightning storm carrying an open bottle, a lid and a shit eating grin then sit patiently for a ship that may never come in. As far as Longhorns basketball is concerned, this is as good as it gets. It's championship or bust for me."

I was "all in" back in January and I'm sure as hell not folding now. And neither should you, damn it. It's Big Monday and if there's one school in the Big XII that I'd love nothing more than to serve up a huge ass whippin' to, it would be K-State. They have had our number for a while now.

Texas vs. K-State
The Drum
8 p.m. CST
ESPN The Uno

So hop on the fanwagon. Cuz we're rollin' hate-free tonight.

If you feel the need to express your fear of inadequacy via hate-filled rhetoric aimed at the Horns, the BON editors and I wholeheartedly invite you to take your business elsewhere.

That said, have fun. Be critical. Make jokes. Call me an idiot. Or tell me that it burns when you pee for all I care. Just don't spew a bunch of ignorant hate for a team and its coach that are arguably the most talented that has ever graced the 40 Acres.

Thanks in advance,

54b

Nothing would make me happier

Only thing I'm concerned about is

Will we keep driving in when every avenue to the lane is stuffed and not make the extra pass out to a shooter after driving into the lane? If we do that again, we lose. It’s that simple I think. The last two games were games we kept trying to bring it in when it wasn’t working and wouldn’t work it out to force them to play out farther.

…Seriously we could have won by doing screens for 10 minutes of the second half of the CU game. We have the shooters to do it.

Surely, they can win this.

I’m not sure what has happened with the team, but I have no doubt they can fix it. Let’s see a better game tonight!

One game at a time guys. K-State, then Baylor, then the Big 12 Tourney, and then finally, The Big Dance. 1 seed, 2 seed, 3 seed- whatever. Just come to play and play to win!

If Hamilton plays well, we win convincingly

if he plays like shit and jacks up threes all night, this game is a total tossup. We’re looking at a possible 3 seed if we fall at home.

by goingforthecorner on Feb 28, 2011 7:22 PM CST reply actions

I think the key to this win is solely defense. Stop Pullen, stop K-State.

Yeah but that probably won't happen

look at how we’ve done against other top guards. Even though we’re still the #1 ranked defense, we’re certainly not impenetrable.

On the subject of keeping things positive...

Can people please refrain from saying this team reminds them of last year’s team? If you really believe that, you either haven’t seen this team play much this season or you know very little about college basketball.

But then again, a simple win would be just fine.

Anybody

else hear the soundbites of Frank Martin on Rome today? He said he despises big halftime leads. He said he’d rather be tied going into the break than be up by 15. Normally I would scoff at that but after the past couple of weeks, I think he’s on to something.

by spinmonkey on Feb 28, 2011 7:44 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

The 800m run is obviously two laps around the track

My senior year of high school, I’d usually open up about a 30+ meter lead on the second-place guy, and just try to hold on for dear life. Once or twice, usually if things were really windy or I felt a little off my game, I’d get caught.

My point is that my metaphors are terrible.

Then we'll write our own bible, with less Sodom and more Gomorrah.

by burntorangehorn on Feb 28, 2011 7:51 PM CST up reply actions

Not many teams playing better than Notre Dame right now

if they stay hot they are Final Four good. Nova on the other hand will most likely be unranked next week after Pitt rolls them.

by goingforthecorner on Feb 28, 2011 7:50 PM CST reply actions

I don't expect ND

To make the Final Four. Their offense relies way too much on bombing threes from downtown. That doesn’t work too well in the NCAA: too easy to have a cold night and get upset. Especially when the teams you’re playing actually, like, understand how to play big boy defense (apparently unlike Nova).

by GoHornsGo90 on Feb 28, 2011 7:54 PM CST up reply actions

Fair point, but they're more than just a 3pt shooting team

they’re a really efficient offensive team, and this goes beyond making a bunch of threes. They don’t turn the ball over much and get to the line at a really high rate (and actually make free throws, 72.5%).

by goingforthecorner on Feb 28, 2011 7:59 PM CST up reply actions

this is the game that makes or breaks barnes’ career. a loss here, and i completely lose faith in barnes as coach of the horns. if we lose to ksu and make pullen look like a star (as we always do – there is always one player who goes off on our asses), i believe that we wont make the big 12 tourney final and lose in the 2nd round in the tourney

god i hope we destroy ksu though…

Great game

Texas leads 33-31 on 13 of 38 shooting. Tristan dominating inside. Horns not running their offense. No high-ball screens and minimal movement. Can’t imagine where we would be right now without Tristan’s production and Holly Rowe’s freethrow training. Hamilton really falling off.

Texas playing great defense, so is K St

-K St making some fools gold 3s to keep them in the game in my opinion.
-Some missed travels and some poor calls by the refs. Not getting the home cooking I expected after seeing the Neb and Colorado ref debacles.
-Hamilton just looks gassed to me. His feet aren’t moving quickly on O or D.
-Jai missed a wide open Gary Johnson on one possession that would have been a dunk, otherwise he’s done the best job of running the offense from the point. Finally made an important 3….congrats.

I’m not even saying it was a BAD foul, just that it was a HARD one, that it wasn’t called, and that it caused Pullen to land on his hand.

It wasn't a hard foul at all

It was a hard “fall.” If you’re as high in the air as he was and you land on your hand, it’s going to hurt. The slap on the hand is supposed to send him plummeting to the ground? Come on, that’s ridiculous.

Only in a burnt orange one, I guess.

But even with my purple glasses on, if Kelly had fouled Balbay like that, I’d have no problem admitting it was a hard foul. I’m not sure why it’s so difficult for you to admit that. It wasn’t a BAD foul, just a hard one, and the only part that ticked me off was that it wasn’t called, and that it appeared that Jake was hurt pretty badly on the play.

Barnes

has no answers when the going gets tough. Look at the big leads he’s blown in conf. tourney games, the lead against CU, the scoring drought tonight which he watched with five to’s at the beginning of the second half. He doesn’t adjust in-game and he loses his kids by not showing a calm leadership during those times.

by pantherchap on Feb 28, 2011 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

Huge part?

Are you serious? Hamilton had a mediocre at best game. Brown and Thompson carried the team the entire day. I personally wouldn’t get up in a kid’s grill to that extent, but there’s literally no stupider a play he could have made other than maybe throwing the ball out of bounds or handing it to the opponent. You don’t get to choose when to discipline your players and you certainly don’t get to bias your disciplining of them due to circumstances. That’s not Barnes style at all.

Are we overplaying them?

I thought this team had a deep bench. We have lots of double digits scorers

by bluejeans on Feb 28, 2011 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

Not deep at all

We only have 9 players and Jai Lucas should never see extended minutes. Lex and Hill can’t score at all. That’s six players that can score (assuming you count Doge on layups and in transition), but Brown has been up and down all season, CoJo is deferential and somewhat tentative, and Hammy has just been cold lately. Same with GJ though he played his ass off tonight. And TT can’t make free throws so it hurts to give him the ball late in games.

Don’t know what else Barnes should do to keep guys fresh while maintaining a legitimately threatening offensive lineup.

Frankly, I'm getting to think they don't know how to conserve their energy.

These slow second half starts – they went 4:40 without scoring tonight – indicates both mental and physical sluggishness.

A couple of years ago Rick worked his team too hard, which he has a real tendency to do…assistant coaches finally confronted him and told him less would be team. And sure enough it was. I know he has a lot of youngsters to instruct…jeez, we have two freshman and a sophomore who play plenty of minutes…but you have to save the legs. Without them everything does truly go to shit.

A lot of that was good agressive physical D from K-State.

But a lot of that were missed open shots or bad shots we didn’t need to take. I think our problem right now is more on the offensive end than on defense.

Final Fours

Are not the standard for Texas, sorry. That’s just a ridiculously high standard for a non-basketball school and it’s never going to happen. The only reason people are disappointed is because we started so well. If we had this amount of losses but they were more spaced out, there would be no problem. Shouldn’t be penalized for initially exceeding low expectations then correcting and meeting them later. Last year we were ranked highly and while that turned out terribly, we’re still ahead of where everyone in the country projected us to be at the start of this year. By far.

by GoHornsGo90 on Feb 28, 2011 10:40 PM CST up reply actions

Why Ridiculous

I felt coming into last year that Barnes needed to get to the Final Four over the next two years if he wanted to elevate himself and the program to the next level. Right now he has proven that he is a recruiting machine and has developed a very solid and stable overall record online of a Norm Stewart or a clean Dale Brown.

Why so crazy:
- More 5 and 4 star talent than just about anyone
- Tons of money and facilities
- In most years great recruiting base in Texas, although we are a national (international) talent magnet

Maybe Barnes needs to be the first Basketball coach to hire an offensive coordinator.

by IUTex on Feb 28, 2011 11:42 PM CST up reply actions

Because

It’s not necessarily about elevating to the next level or you get fired. If we stay at the level we’ve been at the past decade, we’re among the top 10 programs in the country and at least on the map. Yeah we’ve had a rocky time the past couple weeks, but before that we were in the public eye for like two months. I’m proud of what Barnes has done this season even if we’ve slipped the past few games.

Would you fire Jim Boeheim? Roy Williams? They’ve had the exact same type of problems Barnes has.

Dude, there just aren’t that many better options out there. Why throw Barnes away when the chances of getting a better guy are essentially zero and a better recruiter literally are zero?

by GoHornsGo90 on Feb 28, 2011 11:45 PM CST up reply actions

Even more of a reason

Why they should be expected to not experience such slumps. Barnes has made the tourney every year I believe. Roy didn’t make it last year…

I personally hope Hamilton and Brown don’t return next year.

by goingforthecorner on Feb 28, 2011 11:27 PM CST up reply actions

No, I'm pretty sick of their bullshit

Jordan Hamilton was an absolute embarrassment today and single-handedly cost the team today with his poor shooting and pathetic attempt at defense against McGruder. Really starting to wonder if the entire first half of the season was just fools gold. If I’m an NBA team with a lottery pick, I would not draft Hamilton. His shooting is erratic, he settles for threes, is a total liability on the defensive end, isn’t a team player, and is prone to coasting on the court.

Brown is also a terrible defender, continuously has the worst body language I’ve ever seen by a Longhorn, and only produces sporadically.

Neither players are leaders, and I sure as hell don’t want them leading the newcomers next year.

With Kabongo, McClellan, and Lewis coming in next year, I won’t shed a single tear if both Hamilton and Brown are out of the program.

by goingforthecorner on Feb 28, 2011 11:34 PM CST up reply actions

Wow

Hamilton has been one of the best players in the conference (and country) basically all year long. A few off games and you want him gone. I can’t believe you expect better scoring from McClellan and Lewis…have you even seen them play? You think people just walk in and are as good as Jordan? Man O man.

I can understand why you don’t like Brown’s body language, but he has talent and is the most basketball savvy player on the team. We will need his experience next year.

I usually agree with a lot of what you say so this post just absolutely floored me. The difference between a team with those two and without those two is probably 5-10 games and at least a couple rounds in the tourney.

Hamilton returns and we bring in the recruits as expected (including Kevin Thomas) and Texas is favored to win the championship assuming players like Kyrie Irving and Jared Sullinger go pro…

by GoHornsGo90 on Feb 28, 2011 11:39 PM CST up reply actions

It's not that I think next year's guys are > Hammy/Brown

I’m just sick of watching their horrible approaches to basketball. This goes far beyond a simple shooting slump. They simply don’t care about defense, can’t play team basketball, pout, display poor body language, are horrible leaders to the younger players, and set a poor example on how to play disciplined college basketball. I do not want them having any sort of influence on Kabongo and the rest of the new guys next year.

I have no problem using next year to mature the 2011 class. If these guys get the playing time they need to grow, we’ll be all set for a 2012 Final Four run with Cameron Ridley. We’ll be damn good next year anyways if CoJo and Thompson return

by goingforthecorner on Feb 28, 2011 11:46 PM CST up reply actions

Okay

Since you haven’t seen them play, let me break a couple down for you:

Lewis has exactly the same defensive approach to the game that Jordan does. He can get in the zone and play hard because he likes to compete, but he’s not a guy that is going to come to play every possession like it’s his last a la Doge Balbay or Royal Ivey.

Ridley is so, so raw. He’s extremely highly ranked based solely on potential and not ability to dominate right now. He’s not going to play a huge role in a FF run unless he just gets exponentially better this next year of high school. Has a chance to be great, but don’t expect a TT/Perry Jones type of impact.

Don’t worry too much about Myck Kabongo. Guy is as natural of a leader as has ever been born and he has a genius basketball IQ from when I’ve seen him play. Love the cat and he’ll be a team leader the second he steps on court. Jordan would love the kid spacing out the floor and getting him the ball with room to create.

by fanoflosingteams on Feb 28, 2011 10:38 PM CST reply actions

Not sure it is entirely his fault

He seemed to do much better when there was more motion in the offense. We are just trying to post up and if we can’t get the entry in, isolate someone.

There is not as much movement. Means TT scoring is up from all the post work, but I think it is disrupting our offensive flow. For like 10-15 games there in the middle we had GREAT offense for long stretches of games. Haven’t seen that much lately.

by SwimTexas on Feb 28, 2011 10:43 PM CST up reply actions

Definitely

Agree about posting TT slowing down the offense. Instead of the stupid guard cross thing they run once he gets the ball, they should stick Hamilton in one corner and Brown/Cory in the other corner and GJ at the opposite elbow and let Tristan either go to work or throw a pass for an open three.

by GoHornsGo90 on Feb 28, 2011 10:46 PM CST up reply actions

If he is slumping he should take less shot

the problem comes in when Hamiltons shots arent falling and Thomson is (as usual) missing his FT. It seemed as though the gameplan was get it up the court then instantly feed it to Thomson, where he then gets fouled and he has to make FT. Then on the next trip Hamilton runs Iso to the rim only to miss the floater. Hope they get it tighten’d up by tourney time

by fanoflosingteams on Feb 28, 2011 10:49 PM CST up reply actions

What worries me about Hammy is that he seems to start zoning out mentally when he's in a slump.

The body language we all saw from him out on the court tonight is a cause for big concern. That’s how he looked out there last season when things started going south.

by StanTheCaddy on Feb 28, 2011 10:46 PM CST up reply actions

Really hurts his

Defensive intensity and alertness as well. Really important when you just aren’t feeling it on one side or the other to make it up on the other end of the court, which should lead to increased confidence on the other side (if that makes sense).

BevoistheRevo – Calm down, man. Here’s the deal. I played H.S. basketball. I was the backup point guard. I don’t really like to use the word “back up” but I didn’t start. Then, the starter, who was a doucher, got hurt. And, I stepped in and we won 17 in a row. When the other guy came back, we went 2-2, including a loss in the State semi-finals. When I came back, I had my head down. My girlfriend, Amy, still liked me, but it was tough. I feel like Hammy is in the same boat right now. He needs to get his head up. If he doesn’t get his head up soon, Doge and Gare aren’t gonna go out in style at the big show!

I bleed orangish-brown.

I swear to god

I just got into this huuuuuge argument on a different board where soem guys were saying Hamilton is gay. I know hes not gay AT ALL but I didnt have any firepower (ie proof) to back it up. Does anyone have any interviews where he swears to god hes not gay or talks about his girlfriend or somehing so I could forward it to those douches

A. What difference does it make?

We recruited him for basketball only.

B. What proof did they offer?

Why would you try to prove a negative?

I know you guys are the same guys from that other board

and youre just trying to bate me. Can anybody whos a REAL Texas send me some proof?

Look, we don't have those arguments on this board.

What a person’s sexuality is is their business…that’s the way we look at it.

We’re here about the sports on the field or gym and the analysis.

The rest is bullshit. Keep it out of here.

by whills on Feb 28, 2011 11:19 PM CST up reply actions

Get off this

I don’t know if Hammy’s gay. I certainly have no proof that he’s not. Just tell those other guys to go to hell. If he is gay, it’s cool. We’re not Baylor or something….we’re Texas! TEXAS FIGHT!

you guys are right

it was just a stupid argument and I was hoping to checkmate those guys. Im just really upset — i didn’t see this loss coming. i apologize if i upset anybody that wasnt my purpose. At least were not baylor — LOL.

Yeah...we're not Baylor

they got to the Elite 8 last year. If we don’t start making free throws and get our heads right, we won’t get that far.

But, we accept people’s sexualty choice.

For all those screaming about Rick Barnes

I liked this article about Jay Wright from NOVA. Good stuff.

We do forget how tough our conference is at the end of the season.

It doesn’t matter if we’re good or not, teams improve and find themselves. We’ve done the same before ourselves.

’Nova had a tough row to hoe, no doubt, but they will be hell in the tourney. They – like Texas – have been battle tested and that means a lot (even if some of the losses hurt).

This is exactly my point. Just replace the word basics with the word fundamentals and you and me are like looking in a mirror. Hey would u rather have 20 seconds left or no seconds left? (that question is not for real, everyone prolly knows the answer EXCEPT THE COACH)

Crap. Is there a French word for 'deja vu'?

We're going to play like we're in a bad mood.

It's what the French call a certain...I don't know

Well, it's March in my time zone...

I still like this team. Sorry, can’t help it. Maybe they’ll remember the intensity they showed in Lawrence and get this figured out. Let the madness begin!

Damn straight

I’m in it till the end even if we lose all of our remaining games. Being a true “fan” means you go through both the ups and downs of every single fucking season, not just the ones you want.

Barnes and these Horns have given me a reason to be happy for almost the entire season after a miserable fall semester from the football team and I believe they deserve my attention and support whether anybody else does or not. Let’s go HORNS!

Don't even care about the loss at this point

don’t care about the Big XII title, seeding, rankings, or whatever else.

The only way this team gets back on track is if Jordan Hamilton wakes the fuck up. I was embarrassed watching him guard McGruder in the 2nd half. For whatever reason, he’s not focused. Barnes and staff need to find a way to motivate him to play on both ends of the court. With Balbay starting at PG, Hamilton pretty much has to make most of his shots just to make up for playing 4v5 on offense.

have him benched

till the first time out in the next game may get it into his head that his play isnt that of a starting SF at the University of Texas. I know its a small thing to do, but it may help send a message. Chad Forde just pointed out the in the last 3 loses Hamilton is shooting 15-58. Thats not good

SAW THIS COMING!!!

I’m mortified right now. Can’t believe this keeps happening, but the writing was on the door after Neb. and CU came in uninvited. We’ve got to get hamilton out ot LA-LA land or wherever he. 15 of 58 points is ridiculous. He and barnes are delusional if they think we can keep going the way we are going. We are one of the premiere schools in the country (scolasticaly and athleticaly), we’ll right the ship before the big dance tournament.
