I paid the $5.00 to watch The USA vs. The World game last night on FoxSports. It was a much better deal than paying $8 to go sit out in the cold and wind at Westlake stadium. This is an interesting new program designed wtih USA Today to draw more world wide attention to Amercian Football. And, it looked like the kids in age groups 7 on up had a good time learning at their level.
Congratulations to all who played. Now the breakdown on our 3 new Longhorns, and this is GREAT news.
On to the Longhorns in the game. Joe Bergeron. WOW. Holy Cow. Yippee. The kid is a stud! He was The USA most valuable player, rushed for around 130 yards, and scored twice. His first score was on a long run after a fake punt, and the second score showed his good hands on a wheel route. But, the most impressive thing about him was his hard downhill punishing runs. His lower body is huge and he really keeps his pads low and just keeps chugging. With all the attention on Malcolm Brown I was very pleasantly surprised to see that we have a second elite back in Bergeron. He is considered a true fullback, and he displayed his blocking skills all night. He has football smarts.
With Five Stars and the no. 4 running back rating by Rivals, RB Savon Huggins from New Jersey was suppose to be the star ball handler, but he did not hold a candle to Bergeron. I'm tellilng you, Bergeron is the bomb!
Turner played and was around the scene of the tackle repeatedly, but he didn't have any superstar moments. It is hard to tell on television, but I suspect he wasn't tested much because of his lock down pass coverage. The passes thrown by team The World rarely if ever went toward Turner which is a good thing.
Shipley was elected as a co-captin. His routes were crisp and far abov any other high school senior. However, it seems the cold, wind, and poor quarterback passing all combined for a dissapointing night for Shipley. He dropped some passes (they were bad passes, but I already expect the amazing Shipley to catch anything in a ten yard radius), and even worse, he muffed a punt. However, as I said, he had some excuses but I'm sure he is not happy with his performance. It was a fluke and we have no worries with him.
If we don't have a running game with Bergeron and Brown we might as well stop playing football. We need a new name for the duo since Bergeron isn't "lightning.". How about the Brown Bombers, cuz Bergeron is the bomb. Thunder power is another idea. I need help here.
