Texas Crushes OU, Moves to Big 12 Semifinals

The Texas Longhorns coasted to a quarterfinal victory over the Oklahoma Sooners, 74-54, in Kansas City. As Longhorn fans have seen during many conference games, Texas jumped to an early double digit lead, led big at halftime, lost some focus in the second half but still won convincingly.

There was a lot to like about the Longhorn performance. Jordan Hamilton rediscovered his shooting stroke, especially during his 7-of-9 for 15 point performance in the first 20 minutes. J'Covan Brown was really good off the bench. He was patient on offense-took his jumper when appropriate and attacked the paint off the bounce when angles allowed. Tristan Thompson was his usual beast self on the glass and on the low block.

The Longhorns absolutely dominated the defensive glass. Throughout most of the game, OU had just a single offensive rebound. For a team that already struggles to score, this meant game over for the Sooners.

Texas now moves on to the Big 12 semifinals and will take on the winner of Texas A&M and Missouri in a Friday night game. Game should tip around 8:30 pm and will be shown on the Big 12 Network.

Kansas will take on Colorado in the other semifinal. That game will tip at 6 pm and will also be shown on the Big 12 Network.

:Sigh:

I guess I’ll just have to advocate for Jai Lucas’ performance tonight then myself. I mean, we’re talking about his second-highest scoring game of the season, his third game of the season making more than two three-pointers, and a day on which he accounted for more than 22% of his made three pointers on the year. Bravo, Jai-gnome!

Other than that, you hit on all the key points, Wiggo and the only thing left to say is that Texas needs to simply keep building on this return to some level of offensive and defensive consistency and keep playing up to a standard.

Jai

Yes, I should give me a dose of credit. He was a spark in the first half off the bench.

Just like Tristan’s free throw attempts, amazing what good things can happen when a shot spends at least some of the time above 10 feet in the air.

Well done Mr. Lucas.

You're right about Jai.

He’s had 2 straight games as a spark plug and contributor. Seems like I recall that he had a good steal last night, too. Love that he’s finally able to be an on-court part of big wins.

I cringe ...

… every time Jai comes off the bench. But a big “huzzah” to the garden gnome tonight!

Watch out, I bite.

Couldn't agree more

2 for 2 from behind the arc and he didn’t just play garbage time. All the Lucas haters are going to have to face it: the kid is going to play minutes in March.

Also let it be noted that the assist leader tonight was none other than J’Covan Brown. I love to see that. It’s been said before, no one on the roster sees the floor better than he does.

This is the team I fell in love with in January. But Oklahoma is hardly a test. The next 48 hours will tell us a little more about what kind of tournament team this can be.

J'Covan is a terrific passer.

If he ever, mentally, became a pass-first PG, he’d be amazing. He’s terrific with the ball in his hands.

senior guards

Senior guards, whether backups or starters, seem to come forward at tournament time. If Jai gets hot from the 3-point line like he was at the start of his career here, he could be a real asset.

didn't watch any part of your game

I would argue that Hamilton broke his slump in the second half of the Baylor game.

Funny that

I didn’t watch any part of your game. Sounds like Loubeau got the proverbial monkey off his Laback.

BTW, it’s on.

In Friday night’s semifinals, the third-seeded Aggies (24-7) will hook up with ancient enemy and second-seeded Texas in the 220th game between the two, the most-played rivalry in Texas A&M history.

Maybe being a second seed was actually better? We beat OU twice before today and if baylor made it we beat them twice too. We beat a&m twice. Hoping for a gm vs KU

I didn't get the game

from the highlights it looked like CoJo had a good game too.

Did Balbay start and how many minutes did he get?

by TCB Orange Dino on Mar 10, 2011 11:15 PM CST reply actions

I think Balbay started but really didn't seem like he played much.

Coach Barnes yanked him at one point for doing something wrong and he didn’t get in much until the latter part of the 2nd half.

WTF is the "Big 12 Network," and where is it on DirecTV in the Houston area?

Tired of following games on my phone.

Never mind.

It’s on KTBU in Houston. Here’s the list of local stations carrying the game.

DirecTV - Houston

Okay, so I checked the channel guide here in Houston and I can’t find a KTBU on my DirecTV system. Can you tell me what channel you found it on DirecTV?

by texlaker on Mar 11, 2011 7:53 AM CST up reply actions

I couldn’t find the game last night either when it was supposed to be on KTBU (I think).

Texas looked good tonight

I was called a troll because I was unhappy with the way Texas was playing. Hopefully Texas is out of the funk now and will continue to play well.

Hamilton looked healthy again too!

I noticed Tristan changed his FT stance...

…after Bob Knight repeatedly mentioned for TT to stagger his stance during the game the other night. It will be interesting to see if TT FT percentage will increase.

interesting if true

I love Barnes but why hasn’t he coached TT on FT mechanics?

Oh, it's true

I mentioned the observation in the open thread. TT went 3-8 from the line in the game. But his arch on the ball looked much better. A more purposeful stroke. Once he finds the range I think the change will help.

Should have been more clear...

I wasn’t skeptical of AtownTX. I was skeptical of my inference that TT’s FT shooting was a long neglected issue that coach Barnes should have addressed instead of TT getting his fix from hearing Knight’s comments.

Not sure why TT changed his stance...

could just be a coincidence that his stance changed the game after Bob Knight stated such enough times that I made a drinking game out of it . BTW did we win that game? :) Barnes has worked with TT regarding FT and probably just wanted to try something new. Perhaps Bob Knight gave the advice to Barnes. ¯\(°_°)/¯

by Atownatx on Mar 11, 2011 10:51 AM CST up reply actions

Oh, I know Barnes has worked with TT on FT shooting

He wouldn’t be able to keep his job if he hadn’t at least addressed it. I just think that the job hasn’t been done. Maybe that’s intentional because it’s lower priority than many other things in the overall scheme of what they are trying to do. I hope they are committing some extra attention to it now that we are getting close to “The Big Dance,” because he gets to line so much and we need to capitalize on those opportunities in down to the wire games.

Apparently, there was no correlation, so there definitely wasn't causation.

Thanks to robthecob for setting that straight.

I get pretty sick of listening to Mr. Observant, Bob Knight, commenting on this.

Would everyone please check out TT’s stance the next time Knight comments on him “not staggering his feet”? Every tme he says it, TT’s feet are already staggered correctly. Knight is clueless on many of his comments. TT’s stance has been staggered properly for weeks, along with a good straight arm motion. He just struggles with his arc & touch. And everyone (nobody in particular), please get real. Do you really think the coaching staff hasn’t ever worked with TT on his FT shooting until recently?! I can safely assume that a Division I coaching staff probably works with the players on fundamental FT shooting from Day 1. They didn’t just wake up after the Nebraska loss and say to themselves, “Oh crud! We forgot to work with Tristan on his FT shooting! Better start doing that!”

by robthecob on Mar 11, 2011 11:08 AM CST up reply actions

Good point

A lot of it has to do with him being 6’8" and when he completely extends his arms, he is pretty close to 9 feet. And the ball could be very close to 10 feet high. Logically, its harder for him to put arch on a shot than it is for a guy that is 6’2".

I think he needs to start a support group with Tim Duncan & Shaq.

The Big Fundamental, a.k.a. The Biggest Whiner in NBA history, is simply amazing in the shots he makes from the floor but has had so many problems w/ FTs in his younger days. He does better now but Shaq has never been able to really improve that much. I hope Tristan figures out his stroke soon. He’s becoming a beast inside of 5 feet. The alley-oop dunk he had last night that was disallowed … was a thing of beauty.

by robthecob on Mar 11, 2011 11:37 AM CST up reply actions

Yao never had a problem and his is probably at 11 foot when the ball leaves his hands.

by UT_BKC on Mar 11, 2011 11:57 AM CST up reply actions

If TT hit 80% of his FTs he’d be averaging at minimum 15.8 ppg (+2.4), and that doesn’t include the back end of 1-1s that he missed the first on this year. It would actually probably be much higher because he’d become a huge asset at the end of the game when Hack-a-TT wouldn’t be an option.
