In the spirit of what is now going to be a long off season, and inspired by the crew over a Windy City Gridiron, the excellent SBN Chicago Bears blog, I thought it would be a great idea to get an idea of what everyone's music interests are. I figured this would be a cool way to find out about new bands that we may like and not know about. I will kick start with mine
Josh Weathers and True Endeavors (great band out of Ft Worth that travels all around Texas. Check them out)
Bob Schneider
Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights
Modest Mouse
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Pearl Jam
Ray Lamontagne
Old 97's
Ryan Bingham
Bleu Edmondson
Bone Thugs N Harmony
Jack Johnson
Dave Matthews Band
Ben Harper
Matisyahu
MGMT
Counting Crows
Tom Petty

Nice variety
I dig that.
Love me some SRV, but most of the music I listen to these days is sans vocals. House and classical. I find it too hard to write with music playing that has lyrics.
Good idea. Chicago’s a damn good music town. Hard to top Austin, though…
You ain't hurt...
I was the same way
whenever I was working on something for school whether it was my undergrad or masters I would always listen to Explosions in the Sky. Vocals while I was studying or writing was just a disaster. Too many trains of thought going on.

Explosiuons in the sky is good
I have found myself getting deeper and deeper into electronic music, and further away from them for my studying/writing.
The Octopus Project has gotten me through a ton of papers
Hook 'em
I'll have to check them out
Thanks for the suggestion.

Coach, I like your topic and your list
Really like Bob Schneider. My tastes are all over the board with a few standbys—The Tragically Hip, Rush, Ween, Wilco. Some of my most recent obsessions include:
The Hold Steady
Ghostland Observatory (still undecided on Codename: Rondo)
The Morning Benders
The Whigs
The Airborne Toxic Event
Porcupine Tree
My Morning Jacket
Also been into the psychedelic revival stuff like the Black Angels and The Brian Jonestown Massacre.
This week
Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
Sam Cook
Otis Redding
Last week I was on a huge Cars kick and listened to The Cars album 17 times.

I like it and will definately be getting the new stuff.
I hate to sound like “that guy”, but there was something perfectly offsetting to Ric Ocasek delightful weirdness with Ben Orr’s grounded lushfullness. I’m not sure if they can replicate it. We will see.

Hey rBr, given your taste for the soulful on that list
You GOTTA check out this guy that Daptone Records just picked up – Charles Bradley. Sounds like an undiscovered record from the 1960s, but he’s as modern as you can get. Great stuff – check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTy7ugrSFz4

Not confused.
KSE, Lamb of God, and All That remains frequent my playlist. The Sword is awesome them live in Lubbock , was very impressed. As I Lay Dying was an aquired taste for me, the only cd’s I can really listen to are Shadow’sAre Security, Ocean…, and Powerless Rise. Have you heard Austrian Death Machine… It is Tim (vocalist) and Jordan (drummer) from As I Lay Dying, awesome parody band, much like Scott Ian did back in the day with Storm Troopers of Death.
My taste tend to lean toward the old school trash, death, power metal, prog metal. I am a musician and preatty much if a band can play the hell out of their intstruments and keep my interest, I’ll listen to them…which is why you wont find bands like godsmack, or korn etc on my ipod.

Bloody Holly Festival a few years ago?
I was at that show with Kyle’s parents. Great time. Randy Blythe tried to outdrink me backstage and failed miserably. I miss live shows.
I’ve been stuck on the Math Metal for 5-6 years now. The ability of some of these guys amazes me. Protest The Hero, The Human Abstract, I Wrestled a Bear Once, Animals As Leaders, Look What I Did… I don’t have my iPod at work so I can’t name off many more.
Did you ever hear Crimson Envy in Lubbock?
" Answers --Become Resources."
Without Questions, There are limited Resources...
Yes it was at Blood Holly...
One of my fav all time band showed up at that show to fill an empty slot, Symphony X, it was during an off date from Ozzfest. I have heard of Crimson Envy Never heard their music before though. I used to play in a local chrisitan prog metal band named Syringe. We played with lots of different acts that came through, and tons of local shows in which we were completely out of place. Never had the opportunity to play with Crimson Envy though.
Love some math metal, the only one of those you listed that I have really listend to is The Human Abstract…I’m a big fan of bands like Meshuggah, Mnemic, Sybreed…kind of math metal but more polyrhythimic than anything.

A few years ago...
The Human Abstract played a show in the next town over and planned on sleeping in their van, because the promoter wouldn’t help them with a hotel room. They ended up staying at my house. 7 piece band and a lot of beer later I felt like a rockstar. Good times.
A friend of mine played drum for Crimson Envy, as far as I know they are in the San Marcos area playing the local scene.
Meshuggah is an acquired taste. Their albums seem to bounce back and forth from one style to another and back.

Beautiful Supermachines
The Personals (OK, this one is self-promotion)

Psychedelic Furs (Talk Talk)
Anthrax (White Noise, Time and Attack of the Killer A’s)
David Bowie (Low)

Anthrax is awesome.

Not sure
I’ve recently discovered Pandora radio, so I’m listening to a log of artists that I don’t know (for those who haven’t used it, you select an artist like Journey, and Pandora plays their songs and songs that are supposedly similar in sound, structure, era?)
My Pandora station rotation is:
Journey (all 80’s rock)
SRV (lots of live guitar/blues)
Fine Frenzy (female vocalists like Sara Bareilles, Leigh Nash, Norah Jones)
Yo Yo Ma
Philip Glass
Trace Bundy (acoustic/tapping guitar)
Bach
Film Scores
Delirious (Contemporary Christian)
The Eagles

Trace Bundy
Pandora is awesome. I heard Bristlecone and discovered Trace Bundy thanks to that site. His live show is incredible. The man is a musical genius. Backwards, forwards, capos, you name he pulls all the tricks out of the bag.

You had me at Josh Weathers, Etch
Great list.
My musical idol is Springsteen, closely followed by Robert Earl Keen, in whom I’ve always seen a hell off a lot of the Boss in terms of an amazing ability to paint a picture with his lyrics.
I’ve got the same varied music tastes as a lot on here are expressing, with a definite alt-country twist. Other favs of mine include Robbie Fulks and Charlie Robison.
And a list like this wouldn’t be compete for me without a mention of my love for Cowboy Mouth, the best damn live act around.

Very cool
When I last lived in Texas, I was involved in a media start-up company which first launched a DFW music-centric site. As such, I was exposed to a lot of bands I never otherwise would have been. (Another act in the same boat for me: the Killdares). Our smallish office had a happy hour at the Green Elephant in Dallas one Friday night back in 2006 as Josh’s band was setting up. We recognized his name from our database and made some small talk, and they gave us a CD. I put it in the car and was instantly hooked. That guy’s gotta go places, stat.
After I left the state, I kept checking their website for a new CD, and I bet they thought it a bit strange that someone from Virginia (where I had moved back to by then) had heard of them and wanted a CD. (That was probably the last CD I ever bought, now that I think of it.)
by Hopkins Horn on Mar 22, 2011 7:57 PM CDT up reply actions
You probably have
their first album which is self titled. Since then they have released Josh Weathers and the True Endeavors and The New Serenade. They should have a new one coming out here pretty soon. He had a baby boy not too long ago so I think that was obviously a diversion in getting the new album out.
Oh and by the way, since the first album they have added a brass section. They really get after it man.

Children, children, children
I barely recognize those bands and songs. (I referred them to my younger daughter, who is much deeper into current music and if she has a top 10, I’ll post it.) TxS is gonna abuse me even more than he does now, the bastard.
Haven’t had time to listen much lately, but i wanted to hear some gumbo music I’d refer to the Savoy-Douchet Cajun Band (Les Harias/Home music) or the more accessible Clifton Chenier’s Boogie ‘n’ Zydeco.
Or psychedelic rock with something esoteric like Spiders in the Moonlight (Jeff Frederick and the Clamtones) including the great “Cut me Down” that got them escorted to the Alabama state line; Have Moicy, with those guys, Michael Hurley and the unHoly Modal Rounders or even The Great Society with Grace Slick before she became part of the Jefferson Airplane…or simply one of the best sounds to represent that era, by the Airplane: Volunteers.
Or if I wanna go to San Antone, I listen to Together After Five with Sir Doug’s Quintet.
If I want vocals and dance, I go to Little Richard’s Grooviest 17 Original Hits (Boo Hoo Hoo Hoo a lost treasure) or Sam Cook, Bo Didley, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Arthur Alexander or Clyde McPhatter. Or BB at the Cook County Jail or James Brown’s Live at the Apollo.
I do listen to some classical but for writing I often listen to The David Grisman Quintet (’77). Fish Scale will get you on track. Steely Dan also works, particularly Aja, but most others by SD will work as well. Or the long track of Mountain Jam by the Allman Brothers (I saw them in ’70 at old Disch-Faulk Field with IABD and Leon Russell coming off his Shelter People Tour in Europe).
If I go riding on the back roads, the only thing I listen to is either The Essential Guy Clark or some Billy Joe Shaver. Sometimes some Hank Williams (the elder). The basics or nothing at all .
I grew up before rock’n’roll, then got the full dose. So I don’t keep up now much now aside stuff on geeser radio. You got no Stones, no Band, no Jerry Lee Lewis, and no Bob Wills. Who in the hell are you people, and what’s that in your damn ears?

I do listen to new stuff. Don't ignore it per se.
I just don’t buy any longer, net or otherwise, so I don’t keep up with who is playing what. Name recognition is minimum. But I watch performances around here, our local music scene on the lakes that draws a lot of people through.
Did you watch the youtube stuff?
What did you think?

Couldn't listen this morning at work. But I did now.
Micah P. Hinson – listened to your link and another and will listen to more. Interesting, with an approach much like the Doors, esp. the instrumentation and arrangements, first song brooding and implies much more forcing the listener to come to the music. Loved the banjo on Beneath the Rose. Creative stuff, interesting use of voice. I’ll listen to more.
Esbjorin Svenson Trio – while I appreciate the gigantic influence of jazz in American music, I’m not much of an aficionado. One time was enough for me. ’
Construction Summer/Hold Steady – derivative RnR, post 1980. Not much edge there, political, sexual or otherwise. One listen was more than enough.
While I don’t have an IPod, I’ve got over a thousand tunes on this machine, about 700 well picked vinyl albums, a couple of hundred cassettes which are probably goners by now, and about a 100 CDs. I really dislike re-buying music I already own in another format (I can actually transfer a lot of that with a program I own but haven’t done much). While vinyl may not have the pristine electronic presence of CDs, they do have their own charm and the ear easily overcomes the difference. The cassettes came in a period when I had my ole 72 Ford pu with camper and traveled the west a lot. I’d carry a lot of traveling music plus tapes I had made. Some music is not as good when you’re mobile or in a somewhat noisy environment like a pick up.
To say I’m eclectic is to have a very shallow approximation:

You could also say I enjoy genre’s with small representation in the musical record, like doo-wop, my most favorite form of all; rockabilly and psychedelic folk (Have Moicy the best) and even more.
And this, this is one of my all time favorites.
What he does with this song vocally is amazing and funny as well.
This is really a country tune at heart, but it is redefined in the hands of Lil Richard and that saxophone.

Not quite rock’n’roll but interesting all the same.
His vocal histrionics increase throughout the song, carrying the emotional release.
Went long but this was fun.
How have I missed the Swedish jazz group? Awesomeness. Thanks for sharing.

Ah music, one of my favoritest topics. And pimping my wares...
I do some writing and photog work for Austin Town Hall. We try to have a few new songs a day to download, along with record reviews, show previews and reviews. We are all burned from SxSW coverage. Got to shoot Duran Duran at Stubb’s. Kinda cool.
I also have a personal site for the music photography and other stuff including some shots from tailgating and Augieville (left field fence), etc. Contact page has facebook and twitter links.
