Favor to ask of DFW BONers - Beer related!
Request for those of you who call DFW home or know a good little bit about the area...
The folks at SBN are sending a few reps down to the DFW area to scout the best bars and restaurants for watching sports.
I'd like to do them a favor by developing a hit list for them and to do so, I'd like to get your input. Specifically, I'd like to know:
- Name of Bar or Restaurant
- What makes the place great for watching sports? (Lots of TV's with good site lines, number of beers on tap, "known for" food items, hot waitresses, etc.)
- Anything else of interest about the place
Thanks in advance, 54b

I personally found the place insufferable,
but Frankie’s on McKinney and Hall is usually jumping during big sporting events or even Mavs games. Can get extremely douchey.
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
From my memory, I agree with you
I remember watching one sporting event there and also found it insufferable and douchy. But, again, this is a five-year-old memory I’m going on here.

Up until a year ago, I worked out of the same building
it was still douchey then. Whatever, it’s an uptown sports bar. My expectations weren’t exactly through the roof.
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
That's the conundrum
I like the idea of watching sporting events in public, but sports bars, by nature, almost have to be douchy.

It's been a few years since I lived in Dallas...
…so I type this without even knowing if the bar still exists, but I liked watching games at McKinney Avenue Tavern (MAT) in Uptown. Fun place without being Uptown-pretentious, and I’ll always remember it as the place I was buying compete strangers shots in the late hours of January 3, 2006.
Christies, also in Uptown, was pretty good as well.
By the way...
…this could wind up being a very helpful list for me, since I win!!! I win!!! My wife has seen the light and had decided she wants to leave this Southern California hellhole and help get me back to the land of the Whataburger as soon as possible my wife now realizes just how much more house for the money one can get in Dallas than Southern California. I just need to find gainful employment in Dallas first. Anyone got a job for me? :)
Join the parade
There is a suburb north of Fort Worth called Keller…It has so many transplants from California living there that they’ve nicknamed it “Kellerfornia.”
Before the housing bust, I had a lot of friends in Austin complaining about Californian home owners that would take out a home equity loan and buy property in prestigious Austin neighborhoods site unseen simply because their houses were worth so much more there and they figured it was safe investment because sure their homes would never go down in value.
The office space next the one I work in has been empty for over a year…it belongs to a SoCal company that was looking to relocate to Dallas…but the housing bust stopped them because the employees that wanted to move can’t because they can’t even get what they paid for their current houses.
DFW isn’t recession proof, but we’re not hurting as bad as most.

I know the Del Taco hell with which you’re dealing. I myself am hoping to move back to Austin this summer…and then never to leave.

You are coming back to Texas but stopping short of Paradise and staying in Dallas?
There is not a situation or individual that cannot be improved by the addition of chocolate.
If I could just park the old RV anywhere...
…and work at home, I’d probably choose Austin over Dallas pretty easily. But the realities of my job search will make finding a job in the corporation capital of the nation easier than in the state capital.
Plus, my wife is from Orange County, and Dallas is Orange County without the ocean, so she feels more at home in Dallas.

Ahh. Understood. Best of luck in the job hunt.

I know your pain
Born and raised in Austin but have lived in the Ventura/Thousand Oaks area for the last 20 years and I finally made it back to Texas. Took me divorcing my wife but by god I made it. And, yes, I did put a big ass GTT on the bathroom mirror before I left.
With that said, The Londoner in Frisco is pretty good.
BTW, the In N Out at Preston and Gaylord is almost finished.

Awesome. Will mimic you.

Boooooo!!!!! My avatar should tell you what I think of that, as I thought it was important enough to immortalize in sports message board avatar-form my baby son’s first-ever Whataburger a couple of weeks ago.

I prefer
to watch games at home so I can yell, cuss, and throw things, plus I live in Frisco so my options are rather boring, but I’ll throw some ideas out. The people who live closer to downtown will probably have the more unique places to go.
Fox Sports Grill (Plano) – Yes, it’s a chain and I’m not a big fan of the place, but for a big game the atmosphere is pretty cool inside. The openness of the place allows for optimal viewing of the projection screen and many flats screens, along with the fake breasted Plano women who walk by. I sat among the A&M/LSU fans for the Cotton Bowl and the place was rocking. I really only suggest this place if the SBN reps will be in town on a night like the Final Four, any other random night it sort of sucks.
The Londoner Pub (Addison, Frisco, Uptown)- Huge selection of beer and great place to watch soccer. It’s really not a bad place at all to grab dinner, drink random beers like you’re a beer snob, and watch any sort of game.
The MAT (Uptown)- As Hopkins Horn suggested used to be a pretty good place, not sure if it still is. The problem is if you plan on watching a game that ends after 9pm, it will get too crowded. I know a lot of people who have better success watching afternoon games there.
So, ya, my list sucks. If I were you I would post this on Lonestarball.com and you will likely get 250 responses with people arguing the pros and cons of each bar.
Nah, it's solid
Hadn’t tried Fox Sports Grill, but I’m a big fan of the Londoner. Not all chains are bad and they wouldn’t be chains if a lot of people didn’t already like them. Also, I’m not a huge MAT fan, but any bar that has a line around the block for it by 7am the morning of TX/OU should be on the list.

Would the Londoner be the best choice in Dallas for a soccer/EPL bar?

I'm surprised you didn't
throw in how much of a douche magnet a place is one of the factors. A very low douche draw is one of my primary requirements for choosing a sports bar.
"The only sport that should be cried over is tee ball."
- don't remember who said it, but I like it.
I believe "no 7 Jean-wearing collar poppers" fits under bullet two
Though I’m not sure you can actually go out in Dallas without encountering Douchey McDouche.
Regardless, a low douche count would be a plus.
Be nobody but yourself in a world that desperately wants you to be like everybody else.
So, I guess Hooters is right out.
I’ve found in my travels that Dallas is the training grounds for the white collar educated douches, and San Antonio is the training ground for blue collar douches.
"The only sport that should be cried over is tee ball."
- don't remember who said it, but I like it.
You get that problem in Uptown a lot with the SMU crowd
I have a love/hate relationship with Uptown. It’s a good place to go for bars and lots of women, but on the flip side every douche in Dallas has the same idea and they seem to only roll in packs of 6 or more.

The Flying Saucer
is actually a pretty decent place. there’s one in Addison and one in Garland (by Bass Pro) on Lake Ray Hubbard.

They do show sports on the 5 TVs at the Lakewood Landing
But it’s hardly a sports bar. It’s an “upscale dive” (their words) and has astonishingly good food, all things considered. Was my home bar for many, many years before I became domesticated. Mostly a hipster crowd, but there was some genuine fervor during the ALCS and World Series.
Disciplina Praesidium Civitatis.
Likewise normally hold my own barbeque for game watching....
Wizards is ok if you dont mind smokers. The waitresses are scantily clad which is usually a good thing, but sometimes a bad thing.
Three Sheets is a sweet bar that has some TVs in the back area. Not really a sports bar per say though, but good pizza.
Theres always the Pluckers in old town, if you want a shittier version of the Pluckers on Burnet.
Humperdinks bar area is actually pretty good to watch sports at, though the chain-brewpub idea is much better done by BJ’s (waaaaaaaaaay better beer), their sports bar area is better at Dinks.
Thats all I can think of, I normally bar to drink, not watch sports.

Fort Worth
Cowtown’s allowed to play, too, right?
If I’m at a sports bar, I want to watch sports. So I’m looking for:
1. Good TV set-up (quality, quantity, layout)
2. Competent staff…I’m sick to death of missing part of a game because the idiot manager doesn’t know the difference between ESPN and ESPN2.
3. Everything else (prices, food, beer selection, scenery) are all nice to haves
1. Woody’s Tavern - It’s out of the way for all you Dallasites, located in SW Fort Worth. But it’s my #1 sports bar for the following:
- Tons of TVs, 5 proj screens. More importantly, people that know how to work them. Rest assured, you will NEVER find Judge Judy showing on 4 ignored TVs while College Football Saturday is in full swing.
- This is the site where the infamous drunk Dirk and Steve Nash photos were taken. Look em up.
- When the Mavs made their Finals run, I had about as good a time at Woody’s as I’ve had at any bar, any time. It felt as close as possible to actually being at the game.
- No food menu. Beer selection is mostly big domestics, but you can enjoy a St. Arnolds, Rahr, or Real Ale offering. Some decent Texas beer representation. If you want to order in a pizza, they don’t care.
- When the sports are over, Woody’s features decent local/Texas live acts on weekends, skewing towards the country genre.
2. The Pour House - When Pour House moved from downtown FW to West 7th, they upgraded everything from the old spot. Great TV setup, etc.
However, it doesn’t really feel like a sports bar anymore. Kinda clubby. The place was awesome for World Cup, but if your particular game runs well into Friday or Saturday night, you’ll be pushing your way through the hair gelled Affliction mob to get out of there.
No tap beer offered at Pour House. Bottles, mostly domestics and some macromicros. Menu is above average sports bar food.
3. 7th Haven - If you’re at the Pour House you may as well check out the bars all around that area. From Pour House you’ll see 7th Haven across the street. Doesn’t look like a sports bar, especially when you walk in. But it has 3 nice large screens right above the bar. And one out on the patio if the game’s in the evening. If you don’t need to watch 100 games at once, this is an underrated spot.
For the Super Bowl, this bar was the self-appointed home bar of Steeler fans. They flew in Iron City and everything. I haven’t forgiven them yet, but somebody had to make those jerks feel at home. I guess.
It may not be a sports bar, but the last time I was there, my buddy asked for a PBR. The waitress grabbed the remote, and switched one TV to PBR…Professional Bull Riding, on FSSW. He simply wanted a Pabst. True story. She was a little embarrassed. However, I was amazed that she knew that a) Bull riding was even on at that time and b) That she knew on which channel to find it.
Love Woody's
I used to like the Pour House but the covers have worn on me. And it is definitely clubby now. I like 7th Haven a lot too, but I have never watched a game there. There is a place called Franky’s that just opened in downtown FW across from the Library (the actual public library that contains books, not the bar). Haven’t been there yet but I have heard good things.

Woody's
That’s where I watched the ‘05 National Championship. Lot’s of other wonderful memories there.

In Richardson...
Austin Ave off Campbell and Plano Rd (near 75) is kind of a crummy little bar but I like it better for watching sports than Fox and Hound or Chili’s (really just not a lot of options) normally I go Uptown or Addison but I primarily stay at home so I can yell at the TV.
A Longhorn Favorite...
3 Pluckers in DFW to choose from (in order of sports watching excellence):
- - Arlington Heights location
- - Grapevine location (114 & Main-ish)
- - Lovers & Greenville (Old Town)
Great food, Big beers, and lots of large HD TVs.

In Plano
There is a little bar called Bullwinkle’s on Spring Creek and Custer that has cheap, good beer, and friendly service with an occasional slasher on blues guitar playing. Not too many TV’s, but is nice for a smaller watching venue.
Other than that, I believe someone already mentioned Fox Sports Grill in Plano, but that place is always packed and loud for big games (doesn’t matter the sport). If you just walk around the Shops at Legacy, there are a few other good places to get smashed, but FSG is definitely the highlight of the area for big, loud, rowdy, drunk games.
Mulligan's on Harry Hines Blvd.
Always great for sporting events and making wagers.
Great beer. Decent food.

get totally trashed, cook-out, get even more totally trashed and stay at home. Plus I live in Louisiana. Went to High School at Bryan Adams though with Doug English. Oh, and did I say stay at home and get trashed?

Lakewood's First and 10
Only went there once, to see a Cowboys game.
Place was packed, very local bar feel, average age well over 30 so not the SMU crowd.
Whole place was into the game, was a great time. Dont know what its like without the Cowboys on though.

Good call
I really like that bar except when SMU is playing…the bar owners went there and when SMU’s on, they like to have every TV on the channel SMU is on.
Went there one Saturday last fall…SMU was playing like East Carolina or something and we had to beg the manager to turn one TV, yeah one TV out of like 30, to the Bama-Auburn game.
You’d have thought we were asking them to change the channel to the Pro Bowlers Association. Plus, the sign out front said they were showing all the games that day. It didn’t, only come here if you want to watch SMU.
Regardless, good bar, good food.

Local Pub
Z Bar and Grill in Flower Mound is a great spot for games. 10-12 beers on tap. Very good menu (really good sandwiches). Great site lines to the TVs . Many alumni/fan groups in the area meet there quite bit. i.e. Texas Exes, TCU Alum, Buckeye Alum, Steeler Nation, Bo Sox/Yankee Fan Groups, etc. Talented and good looking bartenders and waitresses. They also have live bands on Fridays and Saturday nights that kick up after the games finish (Kind of turns into a Cougar Den at this point. If you’re into that sort of thing :). Most spots in the area are non-smoking these days, and this is no exception so that’s nice. No smoke billowing up in your view in front of the TV. If I can help set anything up feel free to email me. I’ve been going to this place for years and will let the owner know.
It's only got a few small tvs at the bar
But the number of taps and beer selection at Meddlesome Moth on Oak Lawn were pretty impressive. So if the beer is the focus rather than the sports, it may be an option.
