The Longhorns are obviously not playing later this evening and I'm still in shock and a deep state of pain. However, the tournament continues and I shall watch.

Sorry this is a little late. I got SDSU, BYU, Duke, and Butler. Who you got?

Two Fouls on Leonard

for SDSU. I think one was a technical though in the opening minutes.

Not the start they needed.

It still hurts.

UConn starting to pull away. Was hoping I wouldn’t be more interested in BYU/FL.

UConn up 7 min left in first half

SDSU needs to stay close. Slipping away. fans aren’t into the game at all.

not to take away from the rampant discussion, but what are your thoughts at this point on the selection we were up in arms over? I still think there were ludicrous picks and snubs, but with VCU doing what they’re doing and the Horns getting the 4 seed, do you feel they redeemed themselves at all?

by Infield Elephant on Mar 24, 2011 7:23 PM CDT reply actions

Quick Thoughts

I don’t think tourney results can be used after the fact the justify or discount seeding or additions to the field.

Meaning just b/c VCU won two games, they still shouldn’t have been in the field in the first place. There is nothing to prove that Alabama or some other school wouldn’t have won two games or even more.

About Texas, I thought our 4 seed was an absolute joke. I had us as a 2 and expected a 3. Never in my mind was a 4 even a possibility. Same thing that I just said above, just b/c we lost in the second round, that doesn’t change a thing.

I will always remember sitting in my hotel room and hearing Greg Gumbel say Arizona is a 5 seed in Tulsa and instantly know that we got totally screwed.

--AW--

by awiggo on Mar 24, 2011 7:28 PM CDT up reply actions

All true, and I agree.

I just imagine Dan Beebe and the group he associated himself sitting back saying, “See, we knew exactly what we were doing”. I’m afraid others feel the same, though you make the greatest point about what happened before that being the reasoning behind seeding, not to mention entries.

by Infield Elephant on Mar 24, 2011 7:41 PM CDT up reply actions

Furthermore

I have to wonder if UTSA would have been even more impressive than VCU had the seeds swapped.

by Infield Elephant on Mar 24, 2011 7:43 PM CDT up reply actions

tough

to watch any of the games especially the Duke/Arizona knowing how royally screwed last week… i would have loved to see us match up against Duke and see TT bang against the Plumlee brothers and Dogus blanket Nolan Smith… oh well

by jtdoes on Mar 24, 2011 7:26 PM CDT reply actions

I'm the biggest UT homer here, but

Texas vs. Duke would not have been pretty. With Irving back, Kyrie and Nolan Smith would have been a really tough backcourt duo to handle. The Devils are also really big and would have likely gotten TT in a foul trouble and given Gary fits. Also Jordan Hamilton trying to guard Singler would have been ugly.

I had this feeling in my gut

that we would beat Duke. I think we would have beaten them last year, also. I think we match up well with them.

We have a 12th man and he's Bryan Harsin

Given the lack of dog in the hunt...

I have to root for a Duke/Butler rematch. Otherwise I’m thinking VCU & Marquette. But the reality is, that would be just awful for college hoops.

to enjoy watching Arizona get manhandled by Duke?

Question in my mind is...

would I feel better if Arizona won or if they got embarrassed? There’s the obvious pleasure in the schadenfreude if they get stomped, but if they win, that makes them beating us look better for us. Ah, shit, I hope they lose badly and and all come down with explosive diarrhea in the lockeroom immediately post-game.

also, let’s go Butler! Screw the bracket (had Pitt anyway)

33-24 over Wisconsin at the half!

by bluejeans on Mar 24, 2011 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Y'know what?

I have nothing against ‘Zona. They played well enough most of the game to win, we didn’t play well for almost the entire first half and we didn’t play well enough to give us a cushion. Arizona had nothing to do with Robert Cartmell and Jim Burr being absolute failures at the most minimal tasks required of them.

Them winning looks better for us. Plus, I really hate Duke. Close it out, Arizona!

by bbatsell on Mar 24, 2011 10:40 PM CDT up reply actions

My argument for the first part...

Why you gotta be all rational and shit. This is an emotional time.

Shocked

Zona looking like the best team in the country in the second half. And Duke looks as rattled as I can ever remember.

Wildcats too quick and too physical. Unreal

--AW--

by awiggo on Mar 24, 2011 10:40 PM CDT reply actions

Zona seems to thrive off of pandemonium

3 things with improved stock right now: Williams’ draft rank, Sean Miller coaching, Texas (sort of).

That said, I hope Duke comes back.

by bluejeans on Mar 24, 2011 10:44 PM CDT up reply actions

Duke is done

Singler and Smith didn’t come back for this.

Run out of the building in the second half. Embarrassing.

--AW--

by awiggo on Mar 24, 2011 10:47 PM CDT reply actions

Why was Arizona ever picked to be a 5 seed in the West?

Especially when the 1 and 3 seed were from the east coast (the 4 seed had their chance in Tulsa so we can’t complain). They basically get two semi-home regional games vs two teams travelling 1500+ miles. I know it sells more tickets but its hurting the teams that should have been rewarded. I know it was a bit screwy with east-ish top teams this year but with how important home court is in college hoops they really could have planned this better.

by highspeed on Mar 25, 2011 9:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Now, 86-69 and under 4.

Lute Olsen interview: he said much better defense second half.

Much better shooting as well.

by whills on Mar 24, 2011 10:49 PM CDT reply actions

Kansas's tournament to lose?

Yeah, I know Ohio State is the overall No. 1 seed but the Buckeyes don’t have the 10, 11, and 12 seeds left in their regional. Then Butler or Florida.

--AW--

by awiggo on Mar 24, 2011 10:49 PM CDT reply actions

Anyone remember Arizona vs. Memphis?

First round game. Memphis had ball and a chance to win.

If Wesley Witherspoon goes stronger to the basket, Williams doesn’t block his shot and Zona is out in the first round.

Look at the Wildcats now—in the Elite 8. Crazy, crazy game.

Remember that the next time someone laments that a talented Texas team doesn’t make the ____ round of the tournament.

--AW--

by awiggo on Mar 24, 2011 10:56 PM CDT reply actions

Well said.

I maintain: great, great championship.

by Infield Elephant on Mar 24, 2011 10:58 PM CDT up reply actions

This is why the tourney is fun to watch

but its also why the best team doesn’t always win/make the final 4. The current tourney is not much different from the BCS in that regard. It will never happen but a tournament with best of 3 series would be more likely to produce a champion who is the best team. I’m not saying I want this but I think its a bit off that people point to MM as the example football should follow.

by highspeed on Mar 25, 2011 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Couldn't care less about the tournament now with us gone and how we lost

but these are some great games. Hope Butler keeps it going, and Arizona is becoming a Cinderella story.

by Bobster on Mar 24, 2011 11:07 PM CDT reply actions

Derrick Williams is a beast!!

Arizona showed me why I wanted Texas to play Duke and why I thought we would beat them. Duke’s front line is soft, as shown tonight and now the ending to the Arizona game hurts even more. Derick williams also showed why he deserves to be the #1 pick in the draft.

by CanadianHorn on Mar 24, 2011 11:12 PM CDT reply actions

just depressing

looks like this was our chance to run Duke out of a building. dammit. then we would have gotten a rematch with Kemba.
