Spring Footbal Updates: Demarco Cobbs to LB and injury report
OU starting R OT Jarvis Jones out until as late as October
Unfortunately, spring ball is always a tense time since the loss of a starter or great player to injury is not uncommon. Jordan Hicks broke his foot the other day and he is out the rest of the spring. Reports are that he will be back in time for fall practice. I'm not sure if Cobbs was getting looks at LB prior to this move, but apparenty Diaz is trying to find a place for this talented athlete. According to the linked Statesman' story: "Without a doubt his athleticism is what we want on our defense," Diaz said. "He's tough. He backs down from no challenges. He's got a great attitude."
Diaz does not sound at all disappointed with his secondary: "Diaz said cornerback Adrian Phillips, a converted safety, "has established himself as one of the most dependable players on our team." Diaz said he loves his safeties, adding "you could flip a coin" to determine the starters among Blake Gideon, Kenny Vaccaro and Christian Scott. "

Other news on scouting the enemy-Oklahoma star OT Jarvis Jones suffered a serious knee injury that may keep him out as late as October. OU has a big game in Tallahasee on Sept. 17 and they will certainly miss Jones. My football buddy is a Seminole so we are planning the trip to Tallahasee. I told him that I'm not an SEC type guy. I'll be cheering for FSU, who I usually don't care for at all. Do we need to be more like the SEC and support our conference at all cost? Who will you support on Sept. 17?

FSU is a ACC school
Are you referring FSU being in the SEC or what just curious.

I didn't mean that FSU is in the SEC
I meant that $EC Fans are unique in the sense that they cheer for each other at all cost against out of conference opponents. They are pretty unique in their mentality, and I have been toying with posting about it. They have incredible in-conference rivalries, but when they step into bowl season or out of conference play—they are family and hang together.
I think they are unique in that regard and I don’t feel that sort of passion for the big 12-2, and I’ve been wodering if I should be more conference loyal. So, how about it, who will you be pulling for, OU or FSU?
Dont' be such a baby.
I never understood that Wrangler,.
We never support our Conference Nemeses in Bowl season or regular season when they are going up against the SEC, Big X, etc. When our Conference wins against the other Conf. it only makes our Conf look stronger.
safety
If Christian Scott is starting, then I’m not too optimistic about our safety situation. He sturggles in coverage and in run situations. The TAMU game summed it up with his attempt to cover Fuller on a fade and watching Gray run by him for a huge TD run. Much rather see a Gideon and Vaccaro combo at safety.
I definitely agree that Scott struggles in coverage
But at the same time, Gideon also struggles in coverage, as well as tackling in space. What I really think we need to avoid is the Scott/Gideon combo like we had last year. I think we’ll ok fine pairing either one with Vacarro.
agree
Earl Thomas was able to be a ballhawk, made huge plays, and made up for other people’s mistakes. That ET-Gideon combo worked and I agree a Vaccarro-Gideon thing could work. Vacarro isn’t ET, but I feel like he has some of the same play-making instincts which make or break the last line of the defense.
Our safties scare me
I love Gideon for his work ethic, his character and his effort, but he definitely shouldn’t be starting. He seems to lack the speed and skills to be a every down player, but Christian Scott was a disaster last year and Vaccaro made his share of mistakes as well. Sometimes you have to take the smart player over the more gifted athlete. I was hoping that someone would emerge to push Gideon into a nickelback type role, where I think he would be better.

For all of the love of Muschamp
How much blame should he shoulder for the lack of development of UT’s current safeties?

It wouldn't necessarily blame Muschamp for their development
That’s Akina’s job anyway, and he’s proven his worth their. What did have me scratching my head was continuing to trot the same two guys out there all season. It’s the same kinda stuff we would blame GD and Mack for on offense, not letting our freshman WR’s get more playing time.
Gideon
struggles at everything….tackling and coverage. The good news is that Vacarro is at the other safety position and can bail them out like Earl Thomas did.
Cobbs
has been at LB all spring and has been doing great according to OB.
Root for OU? NEVER
I don’t care who OU plays, unless Texas directly benefits from a Sooner win, I will NEVER root for OU. I hope FSU embarrasses them in every way possible. Let those SEC losers cheer for their rivals if they want, but I don’t believe any self respecting Orangeblood could ever root for the Sooners. I even root for A&M over OU.

I dunno. I just dunno.
I would be hard pressed to root for either of those teams but I would probably pick the Land Thieves over aggy. I’m as self-respecting and die hard an Orangeblood as there can be but I simply cannot bring myself to even entertain the thought of cheering them on in any capacity. I’ve traded jabs with any number of the ou sort over the years and while they have been crass and well below the stupid line,,they have never spit on me, or hissed at me. aggy is like a collective freak of nature.
There is not a situation or individual that cannot be improved by the addition of chocolate.
Ou is the exception.
Otherwise I root for big 12-2 schools.
It makes your conference strength look alot better which in turn makes you look better and gets more teams into the post season.
