Around SBN: Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d'Italia

I know this is kind of an old issue, but I used my QB rating stat to try and look at the situation in a new way.

2001 called...they want their question back!

I was always partial to Applewhite. He seemed to know his limitations and made good decisions with the ball. Chris had tremendous potential but his over-confidence in his arm got us in trouble many times. However, I seem to remember Major having a significant knee injury agaist Tech in 2000 and then tearing his ACL against Arkansas in the Cotton Bowl. Hard to say what his mindset was going into 2001…tough call from my vantage point.

I should clarify ...

It should have been Applewhite without a doubt, but I could see where at the beginning of the season it would have been a tough call.

Applewhite should have started in his senior year. He was a winner.

I don’t think Applewhite would have fared any better if starting vs. ou that season but, surely, UT would have won that Big 12 Championship vs. Colorado had Applewhite been the starter. Bitterness be gone! To Simms credit, you could never blame him for that Holiday Bowl loss to Oregon. 3 dropped passes in the end zone on the last possession kept him from getting the coveted come-from-behind win. As for the MNC game vs. Miami, we probably woulda got rolled even if Roger Staubach started that game for the ’Horns. UM was way good that year.

Applewhite.

And shame on you for mentioning the name of the other. It’s one of those I try very hard to keep out of my brain. Blood is at least 30 degrees colder now.

My avatar should answer your question...

This quote towards the end pretty much sums it up: “Overall in big games, Applewhite produced more TDs than turnovers, Simms produced more turnovers than TDs.”
Although I can also see how, at the beginning of the season, it would have been a tough call. Maybe Mack regretted picking the potential-filled Simms, and a few years later that kept him from giving the keys to Snead instead of a quarterback who seemed to have that same “it” factor as Applewhite.

Hindsight's 20/20

Remember the people who said Gilbert would out-perform Colt?

He may eventually develop into a record-setter, but I think there’s something to be said for the proven, gritty veteran, and making the talented youngster sit and learn.

Being an ugly woman is like being a man: you're going to have to work.
