Build Your Own Big XII

Time to put on your Commissioner Cap. Imagine if you could create a new Big 12 Conference from scratch, without regard to politics, television contracts, prior conference affiliation, or hurt feelings. Who would you add? Who would you drop? Keep it at ten teams, or add two more and bring back the conference championship game? In other words, what's your Fantasy Big 12?

Have at it. Mine's below.

I went back to 12 teams, which has always seemed the perfect number for a football conference. And I sent Iowa State, Kansas State, and Baylor packing. Kicking around the Cyclones stopped being fun years ago. KSU, well I don't think any Texas fans would shed a tear to see them go. And Baylor? They don't deserve to have nice things.

Here's my new alignment...

Big XII North

Oklahoma

Oklahoma State

Kansas -- You know. For basketball.

Mizzou -- Gives the league a foothold in the St. Louis market. A natural rival for Kansas. And I always liked having them around.

BYU -- Opens up the fast-growing Greater Salt Lake media market. And provides an interesting rivalry and contrast with my next pick, which is...

Notre Dame -- Still the best-known and most popular team in college football. And there's nothing better than a September afternoon in South Bend at the House That Rockne Built.

Big XII South

Texas

Texas A&M

Texas Tech -- Because it's just more fun when they're around.

TCU -- Some would say this is giving the Frogs a gift they don't deserve. I don't agree. If they're not the best team in Texas right now, they're at least in the conversation. The fact that we don't schedule them, or even acknowledge them, just makes us look scared.

Arkansas -- I for one miss this SWC rivalry. And the Aggies will appreciate it because they'll look smart and classy in comparison.

LSU -- The fear is we'd lose in-state recruits to the Tigers. Well, we already do. Great program, great stadium and campus, great game-day environment, great uniforms. I say bring 'em in.
