Hamilton, Joseph, and Thompson All Declare for NBA Draft
Confirming rumors from yetersday and earlier today, UT spokeman Scott McConnell has confirmed that sophomore Jordan Hamilton and freshman Tristan Thompson and Cory Joseph have each declared for the NBA draft.
Per the release, Hamilton will sign with an agent and not be eligible to return to the Longhorns. Thompson and Joseph will not sign with agents and could return. Underclassmen have until May 8th to withdraw their names and return to school.
Jordan is a likely first round pick who has NBA size and range. However, he is not an elite athlete and will struggle to defend off the bounce.
I'd be shocked if Tristan returns to Texas, as he is projected as a mid-first rounder and maybe a lottery pick. Thompson has an NBA frame that will fill out in time. He is equipped long arms and incredible timing. After he develops a mid-range jumper, Tristan should enjoy the NBA for years to come.
Even with the weakness of this draft class, I expect Cory Joseph to return to school and join Myck Kabongo in the Texas backcourt next season. Joseph would be wise to improve the consistency in his jump shot and his overall strength in the off season.
Regardless, next year's Longhorns will look very different from this year's club.

If that
It’d be pretty tough to do as well as this year, and this year they were a fourth seed.

I think i have made it clear about these players leaving on these boards
hamilton should go- he wouldn’t notice a difference coming back, he can be a solid 2 or 3 at the next level, TT i don’t think is ready considering he is no way a 4 in the nba, and if cojo doesn’t come back he is on crystal meth- have fun playing in the d- league or europe.
Anyway best of luck to all of them and i hope it works out for them
ps. we are so screwed next year!!

They Got It from Me
I root for the success of all these kids. They have to do what is best for them in their situation. It certainly isn’t Tristan or Cory’s fault that one and done has impacted college basketball. Best of luck guys and Hook Em in the NBA!

No idea
what joseph is thinking. He’d be lucky to be a second rounder if he really stays in the draft.
he’ll remove his name before May 18 if he’s smart.
im still hanging on to hope that TT will realize that he needs another season to improve and that he can improve his stock to a potential top 5 pick next draft if he gets an offensive game

Could Tristan go Top 5 this year?
I didn’t see a player this year that I’d rather have than Tristan. He is going to be a force in the NBA.
Obviously he can improve by staying
But I think he will contribute right away on defense. I think he is a top 5 pick

I think that's why Joseph is holding off on signing with an agent
If he goes later than he thinks is worth it, especially in the second round (with its non-guaranteed-contract status), then he could easily just return to Texas.

YES!!!!
so happy Tristan is going
don’t really care about the other two, but I hope some NBA team makes Thompson a very wealthy man soon.
agre for the first time!
TT was the only one I wanted back and not sure what the whole signing w/o an agent means. He’s going to be a first rounder. What else do you need to know? The other two will sit on benches until they get cut. JH is good but he needs work. Joseph has no business in the NBA.

proof that the NBA is a joke
Where is A. Bradley now days?
Man when was the last time you had anything
positive to say about anything Longhorn related? We all get that you think some of these kids shouldn’t be entering the NBA and we all know how down you were on Rick Barnes at the end of the season, but chill out. I’m glad Avery went pro. We probably never would have got Joseph to sign here if he had stayed. Plus he’s on an NBA roster laden with veterans and if he really loves the game and puts in the work, then when his time comes he’ll succeed. If not, then so be it. No need to be so harsh on these guys. Do you need to be reminded of every choice you made when you were 19 and 20?
Do not be distracted by what you see, but be transformed by what you believe.

Isn't Avery Bradley making
millions of dollars a year right now? I don’t think he was ready in any way shape or form, but I don’t see how anyone can say that was a bad decision.
by miketag on Apr 23, 2011 1:19 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
really?
You and the NBA are the reason college b-ball suck… A. Bradley might be making millions to sit on a bench somewhere but he coud’ve developed his game more and became a starter in the NBA if he stayed longer in college. Joseph isn’t any better than Bradley and have no idea why he is trying to play in the NBA when he was average in college (like Bradley). It just shows how bad the NBA is right now. The NBA tries so hard to be like the NFL but the talent isn’t there.

how many rookies play any real time on a legit nba champ. team? cmon.
by dukeoforange on Apr 23, 2011 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions
the point is..
instead of sitting on the bench in the NBA he could be getting better in college and getting an education. I promise you if he stayed in college a few more years he would’ve made more money and been a better player.
by Longhorns84 on Apr 24, 2011 12:35 AM CDT up reply actions
Or he could have blown out his knee
and missed out on guaranteed millions. Why are you supposed to college again? To get an education so you can get a well paying job? I think Avery Bradley accomplished that. He can always come back and pay for the rest of his degree.
by miketag on Apr 24, 2011 9:08 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
A. Bradley
won’t be in the NBA in ten years.. His degree would’ve lasted a lifetime.
This Kind of Stuff Makes it Tough to be a Fan of College Hoops
While I wish the best for the kids who come to the 40 acres and work hard, and while I have enjoyed the entertainment value they’ve provided for us alumni and fans this stuff year after year makes it harder and harder to enjoy the sport that I fell for.
The reason I have enjoyed college hoops through the years far more than the pro’s is because of the college spirit on the teams, the commitment to a program more than oneself. These past few years the difference has gotten smaller and smaller. I’m used to a revolving door in the NBA, and that league is pretty much a big ho-hum to me as a result. Even my home team is hard to care about – I don’t really know who any of them are, just guys in powder-blue and yellow, the faces are immaterial.
The fact that kids come to UT and wear burnt-orange gives them my support, but the kind of revolving door I’m seeing on these Rick Barnes teams of late has me adopting the same I-could-give-a-shit attitude about the faces in our uniforms. Hamilton, Thompson, Joseph, barely knew you. To know the same thing will happen with most of our starters next year has me dreading wanting to get to know them or give a rat’s butt about them as individual players.
I know it’s not just UT, but if the rent-a-team approach to college hoops trend continues the sport will be destroyed as we knew it. Two of this year’s final four were small programs that are able to hold solid players on the squad through their junior and senior years. There’s something to be said about the development of a team, familiarity, chemistry, experience in a system that allows them to be successful. If the rent-a-team approach produced championships, or even regular Final Four (or in UT’s case could even get us into the Sweet Sixteen) then it would be worth emulating. But it doesn’t.
Something’s gotta change, either in how/who we recruit or how the NBA is allowed to poach the college level.

i totally agree.
this is why i ‘like" but dont “love” college bball. all i get is a taste of their potential greatness and than boom they are gone. i dont hold it against them at all, it’s their lives and they gotta do what is right for them but it seems like being a part of a school isnt quite as meaningful anymore for college bball players.
like i said, ofcourse they wanna play in the nba make millions and fulfill their dream but they miss out on weaving their individual threads into the University of Texas tapestry that will long outlive themselves. bummer.
by dukeoforange on Apr 23, 2011 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions
I agree with that last sentence
Although I actually think the solution is the latter part. I think three years should be the minimum for any sport that wishes to have a relationship with the NCAA, including baseball.

Kabongo projected #11 in '12
Nbadraft.net has Myck as a lottery pick in ’12. I guess we need to just accept that we will only get to watch these studs in burnt orange for one season and anything else is a bonus.
If these kids can live their dreams and make millions of dollars..don’t blame them blame the system…The current system sucks for us fans of college hoops.
If Cojo gets told he is first round..I am sure he is gone…
Also I don’t think Bradley is second guessing his decision..yes he spent a month in D-league but he came back up and dropped 20 on the Knicks a few weeks ago..
Bradley’s two year guaranteed salary, he went 19th…
Avery Bradley $1,418,160 $1,524,480
What a bunch of crap.
What do they know about Austin? What do they know about Texas? We’re a strange, foreign (literally) place to them. They probably just stayed in hotel rooms the entire time they were here. This isn’t a second home.
So, uh, bye! I guess.
