Thoughts on attrition?
So . . . just noodlin’ on something while waiting out a pitching change. Way too many of those in MLB. Screw you, Tony La R . . .
Eyeing the football season, we’re sitting at 87 players on scholarship (unless my count is off), which means a couple of attrition cases before August. Who’s outward bound?
Looking ahead, we have 16 commitments for the class of 2012. We’ll have 13 seniors this fall, so that leaves us another three players over. And the staff clearly will sign more than 16, probably more than 20. Gotta corral a couple more offensive linemen, probably a DB (maybe two) . . . and there are offers out to several blue-chip talents, in and out of state.
Where do we find the scholarship space?

I asked the same question...
back in January and people got a little defensive about it.
I figured we might have lost a QB but now I don’t know where the 2 will come from. My new guess is that a player or two are having grade troubles or that an incoming freshman or two will have trouble qualifying like Trevin Jackson did and the coaches are keeping these under wraps until the start of the season. I feel uneasy when we setup situations like this that give the appearance (fair or not) of oversigning like the SEC does.
Here’s a very helpful link from IT BTW.
The only person who got defensive was you.

I thought this
was the definitive comment on all the touchy-ness, To Tower Power, From BurntOrangeHorn:
I don’t know how much you have been around BON for the last few years …but this is a topic of discussion every single year—actually, there are often several such fanposts each year, usually one right after bowl season, one sometime during spring practice, and one in July or August. I’ve even posted one myself. And the fact is, the numbers inevitably work out. It happens. Some of it happens because guys like Robert Joseph, Andre Hall, and Ramonce Taylor lose their effing minds, while sometimes it’s a kid like Sherrod Harris who realizes he has to re-prioritize things.
You know how every NFL team has at least one guy who is a professional "capologist," knowing and exploiting all the ins and outs of the salary cap to ensure compliance while maximizing the team’s desired spending power? Well, this is significantly less complicated than that, and rBr is right: there’s someone on the issue. Each year, the roster reflects a compliant situation, because, well, attrition happens.

Patrick Nkwopara.
Brock Fitzhenry, if he wants to get on the field somewhere. Think Greg Timmons could be a candidate. Don’t see any running backs leaving. Trey Graham? Mark Buchanan?

And to think we took Timmons over Emory Blake.
Looking back sure seems there were/are a lot of misses in that 2009 class.
Do not be distracted by what you see, but be transformed by what you believe.
Who knows what went wrong with Timmons?
Maybe Blake’s actually better, or maybe the position coaching, depth, or some other issue got in Timmons’ way.
Sorry, I was picturing whore island.

Fitzhenry and Buchanan are both early enrollee redshirt juniors...
if they think they can play in the NFL fine but I would hope that they would want to finish their degrees after 7 full semesters (not including summers), FYI 2010 we had one of the worst graduation rates in the country 49% notabliy still beating OU who clocked in at 44%…
Timmons seems like the most reasonable option since he’ll be behind Williams, Goodwin, Davis, White, Shipley, Hales, and both Jones and Johnson when they get to campus…the only way I see him playing is if both Davis and White leave early. Still I hate to see kids leaving the program. The only negative is that he’s already redshirted but Mack typically releases them from the rpogram so they can play right away…
GoBR aren’t we going to be a little slim at TE in 2 years after Irby and Hward are gone and since we didn’t recruit one this year, I count only 4 if Trey Graham was to leave which is cutting it close especially if we continue to have injury issues…
TE is a tricky spot....
and I really, really like and admire Blaine Irby. However, count me as one who thinks this young man will never be the player he was before. It is time to cut the cord. Hasn’t he been here long enough to have a degree, maybe two? I’m sure this won’t be a popular stance, but the situation is the boss, isn’t it?
you're right...
I’m sure this won’t be a popular stance
by vy til i die on Apr 27, 2011 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions
Not popular but...
if he (or any under contributing SR) gets hurt again that will cause him to miss games before August I’m sure we’d put him a medical scholarship which I’d be okay with.
by TowerPower on Apr 27, 2011 1:52 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Mack would never knock him off of scholarship.
He’s the last coach in the country who would pull a scholly due to a serious injury. TowerPower’s right that it might be switched to a medical scholarship, if anything.
I think Mack will give Irby a final chance to play come August
If he can’t help the team, he goes on medical hardship. But he’s a senior anyway . . . that doesn’t open a spot for 2012. Those spots have to come from players with eligibility remaining not staying in the program.
I’m not trying to get any of us to name names. That’s not really fair to the kids who are fringe contributors. We can all read the depth chart and the roster and figure out the players who aren’t in the two-deep and aren’t likely to be.
I float this because of the sad reality of the college game. Top programs try to max sign every year — 25, or close to that. They try to keep the depth chart loaded by redshirting roughly half of each incoming class.
But 22-24 players signed multiplied by four years is 88-96 (already over the 85 limit) without adding in fifth-year players and the occasional walk-on who earns a scholly. Mack tries to squeeze high-performing academic walk-ons onto the scholarship roster so that the graduation rate is boosted. Can’t argue with that.
Don't forget...
Last year we had McGee Harris and Newton all leave the team unexpectantly probably will be a few more between now and then not naming names but I know of at least one player with grade problems. My concern is getting down to 85 by August.

Marquise Goodwin plus a bunch of guys working to get PT
I wouldn’t be shocked if Goodwin decided to go track full-time. He missed the spring while a new offense was installed, so he’s already behind the 8 ball. No one would blame him either.
Timmons and Fitzhenry would make sense, but there are several young WRs who may be looking over their shoulders as well: Chris Jones, John Harris
Other possibilities I see are:
Luke Poehlman
Kyle Kriegel
Patrick Nkwopara
and one of the DTs Dorsey/Cotton/Howell/Bible
Poehlmann could be a starter when he returns.
Don’t think either of Jones and Harris would transfer after a redshirt season. Harris should be in the mix at the X this season and there was some buzz around Jones in the spring.

it's so unfamilliar to be so closed off from players this year
I remember going to practices before the 09 season and being thoroughly impressed by the “no-names” Monroe and Goodwin.. and also being surprised this kid Buckner hadn’t seen more action. Lo and behold, although some said that anyone thinking these kids were going to be starters should get their head checked, all 3 had an impact that season.
Here I am now hearing about these kids and wondering if they’ve showed similar traits that got a little buzz but have only scratched the surface of what may be this season.
I wish I could play little league now... I'd kick some fuckin' ass.
I know what you mean I used to go to 5-10 practices each year...
I got lucky and got to go to a couple this spring only because I was with a high school football coach friend of mine and I mainly focused on the Oline and QBs. I didn’t learn much about QB but Hopkins will be the boss on the line.
Hopkins is going to be special
from what I saw of him last year I cam away very impressed.
"I want to be remembered as the guy who gave his all whenever he was on the field."

I was a little disappointed in what I saw in Porter...
I guess he still needs some more time to develop. After Allen and Snow go I think the OL (assuming they are being better developed under SS and BW) will be fine as long as there are no injuries.
There are always injuries on the OL.
When was the last season we had all five start every game?
Do not be distracted by what you see, but be transformed by what you believe.
sorry didn't make clear...
that was assuming we didn’t get the 2012 targets Estelle and Peat, obviously injuries happen I was thinking one thing and typing another. If we don’t get the big Olinemen in 2012 we could still be okay…if we land both we’ll be fine.
What do you mean "is going to be" special?
Have I not done enough already? :)

A friend of mine knows Luke
pretty well. Says rehab is going great, already sprinting. Going to be ready for full participation in summer workouts. Also said he is approaching 290 lbs, which is the heaviest he has ever been.
If all of this is true, that bodes well for him.

Thank you!
Screw you, Tony La R
True words couldn’t be said. His perfecting the bullpen-by-committee approach in the 1980s, more than anything else, has been a detriment to the game. Nothing like having a well-played, crisp 2-1 game completely bog down in the 7th inning and on because each manager now believes he much pitch five or six pitchers per game.

As a lifelong Cardinals fan...
…I must say, I really enjoyed baseball under Whitey Herzog a lot more. That said, LaRussa’s innovations may have made the game a lot more boring, but I’d say the same thing for the west coast offense in football.
