Just one last post about the tournament itself

Does this columnist realize that, but for the changes made just a few months ago, this “great” tournament wouldn’t have included VCU since the Rams (I’m pretty sure) would not have qualified had last year’s 65-team structure had remained in effect?

by Hopkins Horn on Apr 4, 2011 8:06 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

agreed

if your gonna have playin games make it even and have them in all four divisions

There's a person in your bracket challenge

That I had a fling with in undergrad. Never got to the actual dating stage, but a short fling, nontheless. That may have come off creepy as hell, but I had to mention it because it really tripped me out. Small world.

This game as a learning opportunity

My baby is learning the meaning of the word “CLANK!”

I'm glad I didn't rush home to watch this

Bad, bad basketball. No shooting touch anywhere.

Mack/Howard 1-9 combined

Butler should feel comfortable that this is a close game despite their offensive struggles.

by goingforthecorner on Apr 4, 2011 9:02 PM CDT reply actions

I agree

UConn should have buried them by now.

by Hopkins Horn on Apr 4, 2011 9:04 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Howard's been taking tough shots

backwards, with about 3 UConn guys in his face

by bluejeans on Apr 4, 2011 9:05 PM CDT up reply actions

If you listen closely

next time UConn inbounds underneath the Butler crowd is counting to 5, and they got there last time.

No I’m not still bitter.

this may be the ugliest half of basketball i have ever witnessed

I hope it improves in the second half cuz right now they are making my brothers 8th grade team like good

defense wins championships

Not just effort (like Texas) but great game plans and smart effort (unlike the Gary Johnson spasm defense). Maybe we could hire a Butler assistant to help out. They are the Boise of Basketball.

by IUTex on Apr 4, 2011 9:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I would say we had some legit defensive players (TT, Johnson, Balbay, Joseph)

If we actually had defensive effort from guys like Hamilton and Brown, maybe our defensive numbers wouldn’t have sagged later in the year.

Can anyone read that "Rice Owls" sign that someone is holding behind the analysts? It also says "Texas" on it.

In an unrelated question, can someone please explain why the “First Four” did not yield 4 16seeds rather than an 11seed, 12seed, 16seed….???

"I asked Darrell Royal, the coach of the Texas Longhorns, why he didn’t recruit me and he said: "Well, Walt, we took a look at you and you weren’t any good.

It said something to the affect of...

Rice didn’t make it to the Final Four, but neither did Texas.

'Til Gabriel blows his horn...

by mattyj on Apr 4, 2011 9:36 PM CDT up reply actions

they play in game were divided in 2 catagories...

the bottom of the automatic bids were 16’s UTSA/Alabama St and NC Ashville/Ark LR

and last at large bids fell to the last of the 11 and first of the 12s VCU/USC and Clemson/UAB

basically when expansion occurred the small conferences realized they were just gonna get screwed so they lobbied to have this set up so the last 4 at large/automatics play the play in games not just the worst 8 automatic teams from the smaller conference.

by TowerPower on Apr 4, 2011 9:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I kind of get what ur saying.

Thanks for answer. Been bothering me not understanding logic.

I think the refs are only there in body cuz they sure arent calling anything of merit.

My God this game is ugly as hell. It’s like a pickup game, a really crappy “national championship” pickup game.

by dukeoforange on Apr 4, 2011 9:46 PM CDT reply actions

This butler offense remings me of Texas when we go on a slump

Lots of outside shots, not even trying to get the ball inside.

I bet that is what stevens is saying right now, get the ball inside, and good things will hapen.

This is incredible

The last time I saw a team shoot this poorly, I’m pretty sure I was watching a youth game.

UConn continues to play the clock

Butler needs to start fouling if they want a chance

by bluejeans on Apr 4, 2011 10:21 PM CDT reply actions

So does this make Butler the OU or tOSU of basketball?

Talk about officiating the whole 40 minutes. Jeremy Lamb traveled on that last possession

Challenge for the BON crowd

Name an uglier championship game (any sport, pro or college) you’ve seen.

I’m racking my brain trying to come up with one, and failing.

I'm recalling...

…some NBA playoff game that wound up in the 60s a few years back. I thought it might have been in the Finals, but my quick Wiki search doesn’t reveal it in a Finals series.

Texas-Nebraska Big XII game 2010

close but not quite as bad cuz at least we won

by bluejeans on Apr 4, 2011 10:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I didn't think that game was truly "ugly"

A lot of our offensive ineffectiveness was created by one of the best, if not the best, individual defense performance in college history, and that was a thing of beauty to watch, even if he was wearing the wrong jersey.

Tonight was just a combination of ineptness without enough tension to have the winner in doubt.

by Hopkins Horn on Apr 4, 2011 10:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Try "The Blunder Bowl" as the ugliest ever.

Colts / Cowboys Super Bowl V. I didn’t see it live but it is very noteworthy for being ugly.

"… The “Blunder Bowl” … was filled with poor play, penalties, turnovers, and officiating miscues. … a Super Bowl record 11 combined turnovers, and the Colts’ 7 turnovers are currently the most ever committed by a winning team in a Super Bowl. Dallas also set a Super Bowl record with 10 penalties, costing them 133 yards. Bubba Smith refuses to wear his Super Bowl V ring because of the “sloppy” play." – Wikipedia

But that NCAA men’s game must have been uglier, in my view. It was just painful to watch. And the officials were just as bad as the players, although they called it both ways, for the most part.

The better team won

Not sure I like the fact that both football and basketball championships now held by corrupt programs. Connericut had way to much length and athletic skill, and Calhoun is a great coach.

by IUTex on Apr 4, 2011 10:31 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

I guess cheaters do prosper

First Auburn, now UCONN. Is there a dirty baseball program that can win the CWS to complete the hat trick of tainted championships for the 2010-2011 year? ASU is already banned from the post-season

by offwego on Apr 4, 2011 10:41 PM CDT reply actions

I don't think you can compare UConn to Auburn (at least not yet)

there isn’t a single player on the UConn roster that was involved in the recruiting scandal. The player involved in the scandal (last name of Miles) is not in the UConn program.
