An about face decision which closely aligns with his public persona of integrity, Jim Tressel has tendered his resignation as head football coach of Ohio State University after posting a 106-22 record in ten seasons.

Jim Tressel stated, "After meeting with university officials, we agreed that it is in the best interest of Ohio State that I resign as head football coach. The appreciation that (my wife) Ellen and I have for the Buckeye Nation is immeasurable."

The embattled Tressel's mark at the school will be a dichotomy of building a winning dynastic program balanced against controversial NCAA run-ins on the fringes. Time will only tell which way the scales tip.

Ohio State still faces a round of NCAA hearings and a long-term process to deal with the aftermath of the coaches mishandling of apparently known rule infractions. In my opinion, this action does help OSU's position as they move forward as the issues isolate the coach. OSU still potentially face lack of institutional control allegations as additional insiders reveal a program that had a few, or many, rotten apples who took advantage of rank and privilege.

Hat tip to patienthornsfan for posting the announcement. His question, "So does Pryor enter the supplemental draft now? If there is one that is," is a fitting testament to the reality that now faces a star Buckeye athlete. What a mess.

This makes my day! Thanks

I’m guessing here, but I think the ongoing NCAA fact-finding has turned up more stench. The university finally came to the conclusion that, “We’re going to have to make a change sooner or later; maybe we should just go ahead and do it now.”

I’ve felt for two months that the 2011 Ohio State season felt like a lame-duck deal.

Wait till the SI article comes out this evening

rumor has it that it was give to OSU this weekend and OSU encouraged Tressel to resign

Yeah

I don’t see a lot of “integrity” in this move. Rather than remorse or contrition, his statement is one of “[this] is in the best interest of Ohio State.”

Exactly.

"the appreciation that...........is immeasureable"

If the University wanted to “isolate” the incidences to Tressel, they should have fired him.

I know he was there a long time and all…..

He has had constant brushes with players receiving extra benefits his entire head coaching career. I knew what lurked in the shadows all along and it pretty much looks like now he tolerated it.

Cue

Urban Meyer riding in on a white horse in year’s time to save the day. Nothing substantial to back that, but it’s my hunch, nonetheless.

As a 'Horn fan, I gotta admit that I've been waiting for this to happen for a long time.

He’s gotta be their #1 choice, hands-down, in the conference room. Whether they come out & say it or not, he’ll be tops in the discussion. I just can’t see Urban Meyer taking this after he just left Florida and then turned down ND last year. The state of Oklahoma would be in deep depression if Stoops left but I think anything short of Stoops would be a slight disappointment to OSUers. But, out of respect to OU, I just don’t think he’ll jump ship.

by robthecob on May 30, 2011 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

I just don't see Stoops leaving

He has been tossed in with every major job for his previous stops and it just doesn’t add up. Not to mention, he has a team that is a serious National Title contender this year. I could see maybe if OSU went through this year with an interim coach and then held a coaching search next year that he would be interested but for the foreseeable future The Visor will still be a land thief.

From the article
Luke Fickell will be the coach for the 2011 season. He already had been selected to be the interim head coach while Tressel served a five-game suspension.

osu bad job

I can’t see urban or stoops leaving. Osu is a bad job. Recruiting will be affected at least one year and given the timing of this I am betting SI article will bring down more heat. You will probably see sanctions. Given that, there is no way any logical person would think the next 5 yrs at OSU will match the last 5. For that reason, I think OSU is a bad job to take and the next coach is most likely to be fired before contract ends

by codaxx on May 30, 2011 1:27 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I see what you're saying ... but I don't agree that OSU is a bad job.

It’s one of the top posts in the country, at least as good as OU. I think that Stoops is the kinda guy who could turn the whole atmosphere around on & off the field in a big hurry. I guess it really just depends on how badly the NCAA comes down on ‘em. I think removing Tressell goes a long way towards a compliant attitude and, maybe, lesser sanctions. Had this gone on anywhere but Stoops’ home state, it definitely would be outta the question. We’ll find out pretty quick, huh?!

by robthecob on May 30, 2011 1:45 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't think OSU is a bad job

the academics are good there and its in a state that produces good talent along with it being the major university in the state. There is no real competition for recruits from any other in state schools. However, the determining factor of whether it will be a destination spot when it becomes open is what the NCAA comes down with sanction wise. I wouldn’t want to step into a new job knowing that my hands are tied on scholarships and post season play while Michigan, Nebraska and Wisconsin get better.

Good point, Etch & rBr.

OU being a top contender would definitely be hard to walk away from. However, like you & rBr alluded to, maybe we’ll get lucky and they’ll wait for Stoops in 2012. It is really late in the year to be making head coaching changes in CFB.

by robthecob on May 30, 2011 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions

bad risk

It is a tough jOb and one I can’t see a coach being able to live up to the standard. Recruiting is going to be effected and that won’t show up for 2-3 yrs, so end of your contract you will be looking at tant issues. For guys like stoops and meyer it is just a bad thing. Going there is most likely going to hurt their rep. This is the job you want after the next coach gets fired. Its a top 5 job historically and lesser coaches should jump at it, but for guys who can basically have any job they want it is one to be avioded for a few yrs. (I am assuming the school gets hit with recruiting limits at the minimum)

by codaxx on May 30, 2011 3:35 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Here's my rationale for Meyer

This is all predicated on tOSU not getting absolutely slammed with sanctions once this SI article comes out. tOSU has already said that the guy who was going to be the interim coach next season which allows Meyer to go play broadcaster for a year. After that year, I surmise that he’ll have the itch to come back to coaching because as young has he is, I just don’t see him enjoying being away from it permanently. The program will be in a state of disarray after a terrible season, and he’ll be looked at as the savior of The Buckeyes.

In related news, I like to imagine Meyer riding into Columbus on a white unicorn with eagle wings and an angle choir singing “If I Could Turn Back Time” by Cher. How’s that for some imagery?

by lnghrn53 on May 30, 2011 1:42 PM CDT up reply actions

Just like Cher's oldies, it just gets tiresome hearing about the Urban retirement drama.

If he’d already turned down his Florida powerhouse and then his Irish dream job, I just can’t really see him going to Ohio State. However, he is from Ohio and got his master’s at OSU. This is going to be very interesting to see play out between he, Stoops, & the Buckeyes …

Would you really?

What would the “big” 12 be with Nebraska now gone and not OU worth a damn? It’d be the Texas league and we would be lucky to even sniff a bcs bowl with that kind of conference schedule.

by dukeoforange on May 30, 2011 1:44 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

At this point, I just can't even envision OU falling that hard / that fast.

They’d still be good, just maybe not as tough-minded or consistently overachieving w/out Bob. And it’d be an even less likely fall (to me, at least) for the conference’s BCS worthiness to fall much at all. It’ll still be a solid league. The only thing I see going REALLY badly for OU would be their recruiting hauls. With Stoops gone, they probably wouldn’t steal as many of UT’s targets and could you even imagine how many underclassmen would bail out and go pro if Stoops announces that he’s leaving? It’d be a ton.

by robthecob on May 30, 2011 1:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Why?

Is it any fun beating up on Baylor (last year notwithstanding)? Or Colorado? Or Kansas? No, it isn’t – those games are injuries waiting to happen, and playing them usually has no upside for Texas. If we win, big deal – we were supposed to win. If we lose, we’re screwed because those teams shouldn’t be on the same field with us (again, last year’s results notwithstanding).

The teams that are the most fun to play are the ones that have a legitimate shot at beating you – aggy, TT, ou, K-State, Nebraska, OSU. I want the other teams in the conference to be as strong as possible.

That doesn’t mean I don’t think Stoops is a dick, though.

If the world was a school, we'd be homecoming king...

Depending on how hard NCAA comes down on OSU, this helps Nebraska enter a weakened Big Ten.

neb

I think this much bigger for michigan and nd. Neb isn’t estasblished recruiting in the effected areas. Should help neb a bit, but given their fall off in TX recruiting it is break-even at best

by codaxx on May 30, 2011 1:31 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Long term maybe BUT

This is definitely a big boost to Neb. The dominant big 10 team is gonna be down a couple of seasons. Mich has a new coach to break in and the only real threat is Wisconsin.

Don’t forget that Neb a year under their belt with T magic and plenty of talent around him.

Don't think it's coincidence Tressell resigned on Memorial Day

With everybody at the beach or bbqing, not too many people are watching ESPN today. Tressell announced his 5 game suspension on the first day of March Madness. Chicken s*** PR moves.

Pryor just became the biggest villain in Ohio since LeBron. I suspect most of the blame at the Couch Burning U will fall on Pryor , and Tressell goes down as a beloved martyr who was just trying to protect his players.

Tressell lied to the NCAA, you don’t lie to a governing body and keep your job.
