Source: Texas Guard Cory Joseph To Remain In NBA Draft

Update: Yup, all three are gone.  Awesome! --PB--

Mark Rosner, basketball columnist for the Austin American Statesman, just tweeted that he has a University of Texas source who says freshman Cory Joseph will stay in the NBA Draft. Underclassman must decide by today whether to return to school or remain draft eligible.

After a strong workout yesterday (NBA Draft.net) and the overall weakness of this draft, this isn't a huge surprise. With continued improvement over next six weeks, Joseph could sneak up the draft board and emerge on draft night as an early second round pick. Cory has good size to be an NBA lead guard, a high basketball IQ, and a solid jump shot. To stay in the league, Joseph must improve his handle, become a more consistent outside threat, and show an ability to stay in front of more athletic guards.

If this report is true, next year's Texas Longhorns will look incredibly different from this year's squad.

Gone will be departing seniors Gary Johnson, Dogus Balbay, Matt Hill, and Jai Lucas. Also gone will be freshman Tristan Thompson and Joseph as well as sophomore Jordan Hamilton. That's all five starters, by the way.

Rick Barnes will only return J'Covan Brown and Alexis Wangmene among players who were active last season. Clint Chapman, after red-shirting, will join those two as the only familiar faces in burnt orange.

We almost published stories at the same time.

You beat me to the punch.

Would add that Joseph performed extremely well in the speed and agility drills, finishing among the top players at the event, results that answer the questions about his athleticism.

The Knicks were one of the teams that hosted the workout and might have met with Joseph afterwards (he met with several teams). They also have a need with Chauncey Billups about toast, so it’s possible they gave Joseph a guarantee, which would have been enough to keep him in the draft.

Dumb, dumb, dumb.

I won’t be able to help from laughing when this blows up in his face. He’ll have no one to blame but himself.

Why would you even risk your future like that? Dude is taking a huge risk in not coming back.

Unless you have some inside information

I think you’re way off. No one but Joseph and the teams he met with know what those teams told him. Given the result, it’s a virtual certainty that at least one team likes him enough to take a chance on him because they think he’s a legitimate NBA player. And that would make it a reasonable and understandable decision.

Of course, but that doesn't mean he'll last.

How much has Avery Bradley played? Not much. How much has he gotten paid? Probably not much. Seems as though Cory Joseph is destined for perpetual bench-warmer. But I guess that’s cool with him.

Bradley has better upside.

But I think Joseph has a higher basketball IQ and is a more refined player at this point. I can see him becoming a contributor.

Bradley made about $1.4 million last year. Not an unsubstantial sum, in my opinion.

I think Joseph can have a better career than Bradley

Joseph may be able to play the point some in the NBA. I really don’t see this happening for Bradley. Bradley’s size is always going to be an issue if he can’t handle the ball.

by Reggieball on May 8, 2011 8:05 PM CDT up reply actions

Salary point.

Look, that is winning the lottery. Even if Bradley doesn’t sign another contract at all, he sill will have made millions of dollars.

The number of people who are successful in the NBA is very few. If you think you have a chance to get in, and get paid, I cant really fault someone for taking it. It is winning the lottery, with a chance to succeed and make even more money.

$1.4 million as a 20 year old. Seriously folks, who wouldnt take that? And why? Because you think you could get more later? Maybe, but fuck, being a millionaire or even more a millionaire is a distinction thats a far cry from working 8-5 for under 100k, for years, like most of us non-lawyers will be.

Make no mistake, if he thinks he can get signed at a decent contract, he is securing himself and his family for the rest of his life financially. As fans we lose sight of that, and just want to see whats best for his game. Thats not always the same as whats best for his pocket, and I cant fault someone for going for the later.

Good luck to him.

the # of NBA players who signed multi million dollar contracts and are set for life is very small.

these 19 year old kids now are making a couple million and have NO money management skills. everyone they ever knew is trying to stay close to them to catch a few thousand that may fall out of their pocket. they blow it in a few years on cars, jewelry, women, invenstment scams, etc and have nothing to show by the time they are 30.

So do most lottery winners

But their own intelligence or fiscal responsibility doesn’t come into it I don’t think.

You have a winning lottery ticket, you cash it in. If you screw it up afterward is immaterial.

Irony has been defined for a long time.

Seriously, I see that you’re from Dallas, but try to be a little more open-minded. I’ve never been uncivil in expressing my own opinions.

B) I was being civil in sending my email instead of risking a ban by calling you a half minded ass clown.
C) You are the new greenspointexas
D) “Congrations.” was actually the most sensible thing you have posted on this whole thread.

Dallas, Fort Worth, whatever.

Point is, you’re from that area. In fact, it’s even worse that you’re from FW because that area is even more rife with waterbrained conservatism. And it seems you’re one of them. That’s really your beef with me, isn’t it? Politics? Well, it might be a little expedient to come to grips with the fact that many, if not most, Texas fans are going to be at odds with you, politically. So become a man and learn to live with it. We’re here to talk about sports.

three guards and, at least, four players who are more comfortable facing the basket next season.

If Rick isn’t stubborn, we could see the Running ’Horns next season!

We’ll be too small to win in the halfcourt.

Question

Will the Jazz offense thrive with a smaller lineup? Granted the biggest concern going in will be rebounding on both ends, I’m just wondering if this might work to our advantage, all things being equal.

Not sure

but don’t think this works to our advantage at all. We were going to rely on freshman next season, a lot. Now, just more so.

Rebounding is going to be a serious concern next season. Relying on Wangmene and Chapman to control the glass leaves a little to be desired.

There were a lot of questions coming into this past season, too. Of course we had Jordan, but let’s face it, he was still raw and we were hopeful of improvement. Don’t recall too much optimism. Let’s give them a chance.

Next Year's Longhorns

PG: Myck Kabongo (6-2)
SG: J’Covan Brown (6-1), Julien Lewis (6-3)
SF: Sheldon McClellan (6-5)
PF: Alexis Wangmene (6-7), Kevin Thomas (6-7)
C: Clint Chapman (6-10), Jonathan Holmes (6-8)

Don’t be surprised if Texas adds another player or two. Unless I’m missing someone, that is only eight scholarship players. The limit is 13 per season.

Problem with the transfers

I have to think someone has indicated to him that he is a 1st round pick

Going out early if you don’t think you will be in the 1st round is a multi-million dollar mistake, as it means that you have no guaranteed contract, and if you do make a team you most likely sign for the league minimum. Chances are good (about 50%) that you end up in the D-league or Europe for your first year. And there is a decent chance after that that you never get to the NBA, or end up a journeyman who goes from one 10 day contract to the next.

Going out too soon is a considerable risk. Take for example former Longhorn Maurice Evans. He obviously has NBA talent, but he went undrafted after he left after one year (his junior year) at Texas. He bounced around for a number of years before he really stuck with an NBA team. And he was pretty lucky.

Joseph will get drafted. But if he is going out early so that he can get drafted in the 2nd round in a lockout year, then he is making a very costly mistake.

Question

Just want to hear peoples opinions. But lets say Star players like Sullinger, Jones, Barnes..etc declared would TT and CoJo still stay in the draft or stay in school since the draft is loaded?

by j64_tizzle on May 9, 2011 1:08 AM CDT reply actions

Kentucky's Terrence Jones

On decision to return next year said this -
“I’ve been enjoying being a college player and plan on striving to reach my goal of winning UK’s eighth national title. I can’t leave the Big Blue Nation just yet.”

Whether he meant this or if it was just BS, it would be nice to hear something like this out of UT players every now and then – professing some allegiance to the university and wanting to help bring a championship home.

by gcinthewoods on May 9, 2011 8:58 AM CDT reply actions

It sucks they're gone

Just another group of freshmen who were NEVER true Longhorns. They came to Texas for the oppertunity, not for the love of the University. The cycle will continue and team chemistry will be little to non-existant. Im not 100% on this, but I dont think a team of 1-&-dones have ever won a championship. And now, once again, Rick has to change who he runs his offense thru. Im really hoping the new NBA CBA does away with 1-&-dones. Its killing college basketball

"Stability is a factor in teams that win the championship. But if you stabilize on a team that's going to end up short of that, then all you're doing is spinning your wheels in the 45-win range."-----Daryl Morey

one and done

Don’t hate the player, hate the game. To call them not true Longhorns is a bit too much. I think it’s selfish as a fan to call out any of these 18-19 year old guys who want to live their dream and get paid to do it.

by nash89 on May 9, 2011 10:40 AM CDT up reply actions

You Are Right

It is probably selfish on our part. But frankly, I am getting tried of pouring out my emotions every year, emptying my wallet in support of the program, and driving a 300 mile round trip to see every home game. So these kids can continue to pursue their dreams as they have every right to do but I don’t think I’ll be in the stands supporting them anymore. You can criticize and say I am not a “true” fan, but I just find it hard to support our NBA D league anymore.

by robthecob on May 9, 2011 5:28 PM CDT up reply actions

one and dones are terrible for the college game

and the NBA drafts totally on promise not on what actually they have done on the court. Bad NBA franchises wonder why they re bad when they draft players who have to be developed for 3-4 years which is the same length of the rookie contract. Thus they paid all this money to a kid to develop him only to lose him in free agency if he actually turn out to be good.

by RQ on May 10, 2011 1:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Too bad

I wish him the best, though. A part of me wishes this was a far stronger draft so that these players would be encouraged to stay, but if he knows a team or two likes him a lot enough to draft him then it’s hard to pass up.

He’ll be missing some interesting smallball next season, though.

the usual 3 step process -

Step1) I plan to return to the University of XX next year. I will be back in the gym tomorrow working to improve my game and will spend the summer with my teammates to work on our conditioning and elevate our games. We are really looking forward to next year.
Step 2) I am going to meet with Coach and my family to discuss my options and get their input before making any decisions.
Step 3) Playing in the NBA has been a life long dream of mine. I want to take my game to the next level and compete against the best players in the world. Therefore, today I am announcing that I will not return to the U. of XX and will submit my name in the NBA draft.
