One Year Ago Today...

Remember where we were one year ago today?
June 14, 2010 was the infamous day that Texas remained in the Big 12.
June the 14th has a sports history. On this date, the University of Texas decided to remain in the Big 12, and Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State followed suit (2010) - AAS
Personally, I'd rather be planning all my away game trips to California and Oregon (I'd skip the ones in Arizona) but things don't always work out as planned.
Was it a good idea to stay?
BDR will be up later today.

Is that some sort of low-res, hacked and diminshed looking Big 12 logo?
If so, good job.

If the future is 16-team megaconferences ...
… then we may well become part of the Pac-16, along with A&M. The rest of the 12-2? Good luck.
T. Boone Pickens gave UT a HUGE donation a few years ago. Where Texas goes, so goes Oklahoma State.
What we have here is a failure to execute.

Wonder if the Pac will go for that
But the current Pac + CU + Utah + Texas + Ags + ou + Cowboys = 16. I could live with that.
I don't see that ever happening. I think Tech is attached to us.

Ah, the Tech Problem
Is not that what the BIG TEN called it?
sad day...
i was prepared to go buy a shirt with the PAC-16 logo then i hear we stayed i was like “……awwwwww” but now i look at the bright side of things…..when the Big 12 folds we can go to the SEC

Yeah, I wouldn't call that a bright side

No self respecting Longhorn
Should ever want to lay with that SEC trash. Yes, the competition level currently makes it the premiere league of college football, but this game is cyclical, and they will not always reign. Once that day comes all you’re left with is a culture of sub-par to blatantly inferior academics and a stigma of shady dealings, non-compliance, and, at times, protrusive cheating. We distanced ourselves from those types of dealings in the mid-90s and should never go back. See Old SWC. You’re ultimately judged by the company you keep, and I want no part of that assemblage.

let me be clear
the ONLY reason i want Texas in the SEC is cause its tougher competition. can you imagine the atmosphere in DKR when Alabama or Florida came to town? plus we could get the whole rivalry with Arkansas going again, and LSU is an elite program.

That attitude completely ignores, disregards, and otherwise pays no heed to the principle I mentioned above. Just so I don’t have to repeat this again, here it is with unnecessary punctuation, italics, and bold type like all the cool people do when they’re trying to make a really strong point and show how passionate/smart/well endowed they are. Ready, kids? Here we go! College. Football. Is. Cyclical.
When you say that you want to go for competition alone it ignores the big picture entirely. It amazes me how many people have a short memory and talk as if the SEC has always been a class of their own. It’s really easy to talk about how amazing it would be to have UT v. LSU, Bama, et al. every year if we moved to that league and how great it would be to see the “juggernaut SEC schools” come through Austin. What happens, though when the Miamis and Florida States, Michigans, Notre Dames, Nebraskas and USCs come back to prominence while the SEC “powerhouses” have a few down recruiting years? Then that “competition” so sought after isn’t nearly as lucrative of a proposition. You end up left with Texas, a school that prides itself on academic excellence, laying with dogs who’s competition is mediocre and academics are pedestrian. Here comes that little punctuation trick again! Wait for it . . . No. Thank. You.

which is why i said the tougher competition was the only reason
i get everything else like academics compared to most of the SEC (Vanderbilt and several other excluded) Texas Tech is like Oxford

I've already laid out my take.
About the competition not being the same forever. Instead of repeating myself or trying to take another analytical angle, I’m just going to go with this. At least it’s funny.

Sigh...
…it’s been so long since I’ve been able to refer back to one of my favorite quotes on here. The one about how those who care about Texas football, Texas football and Texas football alone are much, much more likely to prefer a move to the SEC than those who care about Texas football and the University of Texas as a whole.

i dont JUST care about UT Football it's been a dream of mine to one day attend UT
but look at it this way. if Texas were to go to the PAC-16 some of the best matchups would be those out of division games like Texas vs USC and Vs Standford and Oregon. much easier for a fan like me to get to games in Alabama and Louisiana than it is to get to games in Oregon and California

Ummmm.
No. Wait. Hell no. Let me rephrase that,,HELL NO. We will NOT go to the SEC. Road trips to California? Take in a wine tour? Cruise up to Vampire territory? Sign me up. Road trips to the SEC? Pass.
There is not a situation or individual that cannot be improved by the addition of chocolate.
Vampire Territory?
That’s hilarious. I actually used to be able to see the shore of Santa Cruz from the back windows of my house on a clear day. Luckily vampires didn’t consider the old-people blood of Monterey County to be worth the schlep.

Right now,
I think it makes more sense for Texas to be in the Big 12-2. For the non-revenue sports, the amount of traveling the Pac-16 entailed wouldn’t have been worth it economically. What is surprising is that even though Texas kept massive realignment from happening all around college football, a lot of people wanted to paint the Longhorns as the bad guys in this whole scenario and were resentful for the decision resting so firmly in Austin.

i never understood one thing
why Nebraska said we killed the conference…..excuse me werent they the ones who left?
formerly "Horns102591"
I don't understand that either.
Best I can figure is that they continued to hold a grudge about not getting to have partial qualifiers when the Big 12 formed.

Texas' decision to stay was crucial
Everyone else finally realized that they were pretty impotent and were stuck with whatever decision we made. They should all be sending Texas thank you notes. Except lil ’bro, Aggie went lookign over that barn yard fence at the $EC like they were a herd of sheep. Their resistance to the Pac 16 was also a big part of making the focus remain on keeping the Big XII-II together. It really worked out pretty well.
We don’t have conference championship game, but it may lead us to more advantage in terms of year end bowl games. My inital reaction was that we need 2 more schools to get back to divisions and a championship game, but maybe that isn’t so crucial.
I hated the idea of Pac-16 because it gave us little in return. We would be in a division with AU and ASU and the same Big XII south teams. It wasn’t worth it especially when you consider the huge cost for all the other sports.
We're Texas.
many speculate that...
we’ll re-expand before the new contract for 1st tier right but after we divide up the CU/NU penalty money. I’m not so sure about the validity of this but it sounds possible….
At first I would have bet it all on that happening
But now that it has calmed down, things seem like the Big XII-II may be alright.
Don't be such a baby.

The only positive to come from this fiasco...
was the elimination of the CCG. <—————— Nothing more than a money grab and it can only be a detriment to the favorite as they usually had to play a team they had already beaten.
Wasn't this system designed to prevent this from happening?
2010/11 Final BCS Standings
1. Auburn 14-0
2. TCU 13-0
personally, I think that....
if the 4 super conferences came to be with the PAC16 Big Ten SEC and ACC then I’d bet money the CCG die then too, the winners of each division would just get a BCS bid…so it basically would become a “smaller conference of 8” with an OOC scheduling agreement for 2-3 pre-scheduled games a year….all in all not a horrible idea
It could be the format for a 4 teamer...
That would be better than what we have today. I am still in favor of a 12 teamer, with top 4 getting byes.

How do you think the BCS bowls would determine which of the division champs to place where, including the NCG?

And the poor aggies
Thank goodness there were calmer admin heads than beergut and miketag. They hate UT so bad they would have done anything to join the SEC. They deny this, of course, but I suspect had UT and AtM gone together they would have howled to high heaven.

The 1 year anniversary
That should mark a good time for Beergut to finally join the Big XII-II conference and drop the $EC.
We're Texas.
if that whole Bowl game against LSU didnt show the Aggies they'd be a doormat i dont know what will
and the aggies can say they wanted to go to the SEC but they all know without Texas on the schedule their year would be pointless. Didnt Texas say if A&M split they wouldnt schedule them in any sport for awhile?
formerly "Horns102591"
Texas said that?
That hardly makes sense – what would either school be without the other?
Too many years, too much tradition and the state legislature to boot. We are irrevocably tied together.
