Read the PDF linked in the first post.. It paints a bit different picture of Texas football than I think most of us would like to believe is the case. If it were some random player, I might have some doubts about it but Sherrod has always been a stand-up guy in my opinion.

Also disconcerting to hear the small bits about VY and Aaron Ross.

Obviously Disenfranchised

I do believe however that GG had beat out Sherrod as the 2nd string QB – so I do not understand why he would have been shocked at that event. I really admire the Longhorn athletes, and wish them well after their time at the University. So I am hoping that Sherrod has a very successful life ahead of him. However, in defense of Mack, every glimpse of Sherrod featured a very scattershot passing ability. I did not see him much, but a large part of his few efforts were real headscratchers.

Just noticed owenh linked this in the twitter story thread

sorry for the double post.

But yeah, realmccoy I guess my issue is just hearing that Mack/whoever else weren’t straightforward with him and kinda strung him along, if that’s true that sucks. I do wish him the best and I hope the people being assholes on shaggybevo get their due karma.

I wish I could play little league now... I'd kick some fuckin' ass.

Due karma

Maybe we experienced some of that last year. Refusing to let him transfer was not classy. These stories are usually swept under the rug, glad this came out. Good luck, SH, you played it like a man.

We have a 12th man and he's Bryan Harsin

Interesting

Two SH features this week….more than his entire career…nobody knows what went on, however it is safe to say that coaches will play those who give them the best chance to win ( coaches tend to get fired for losing )…..the resposibilty is clearly on the player to make such deceisions difficult…although he might be a fine young man, he comes off as rather childish

I'm certainly not saying the story is a lie

but it’s a college paper. Not exactly a credible source. I’ll take this with a grain of salt until some other, more reliable, information surfaces.

I also thought it to be quite childish.

He may have just been wanting to get his perspective off of his chest, which is fine, but I’d really like to hear Mack’s side of the story as well. We all know that’ll never happen because of Mack’s character. This explains the whole quitting thing last year. I understand his frustration but sometimes you just gotta hang in there when faced with adversity. You never know what blessing is just around the corner. He very well mighta taken over the starting gig after GG struggled. At the very least, he coulda saved Case’s redshirt and gotten some good PT in the process. However, I woulda been frustrated as much as him about the MNC game last year. There wasn’t any play being called in that 1st half that Sherrod couldn’t have run as well as GG. 2nd half was a whole different story, though.

considering that he had already graduated

I don’t think you can blame him for leaving the team

Seriously, you have to put in a ridiculous amount of work to be a college football player at a Division I school, and if you are not getting any playing time on the field, it really isn’t worth it.

by Beergut on Jun 4, 2011 9:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah, but, it was worth it for Sherrod to stick around. He was still respected by all, at the time.

There was a very good chance that he would’ve been starting by mid-season. Much stranger things have happened. Major Applewhite, Jeff Hostetler, Tom Brady, etc… You never know what’s around the corner.

It did say in the article that he had respect for UT

and didn’t want to be responsible for bad publicity. Hence not making the transfer request public, unlike Snead. So I can see that being the reason for him not going to the local or national media outlets and didn’t see the harm in talking to a school paper. However, he did say he wanted to write books and an unflattering inside look at UT Football would sell. But I don’t think he will go that route.

It Ain't Easy, But It's Worth It.

Pretty sure

that every career back-up at practically every position at every major program has a near-identical story (and probably a similar interpretation of it)

by BrooklynHorn on Jun 3, 2011 11:23 AM CDT reply actions

Other Longhorn sites have also linked to this paper

None of the comments made by VY, Ross, and others appear to be corroborated. I’m sure there is some artistic license going on. Not saying some, or most, is not true. Just ain’t buying the MNC part as written. I don’t recall sitting in the stands at halftime thinking to myself, “Damn, why don’t they put the 3rd string QB in the game seeing as how he had been practicing with the 1’s and all. Couldn’t be any worse.” Just don’t recall those thoughts. And as it turned out, GG had a pretty good 2nd half save for the last 3:00 of the game.

Nothing to see here so I say move along.

The whole not letting him transfer to a Division I school mkes no sense to me

It’s not like we haven’t had guys transfer to DI schools under Mack.

by mr.manager on Jun 3, 2011 3:04 PM CDT reply actions

He was a redshirt junior his last year in the program

If UT were to allow him to transfer, they would have had to waive the standard NCAA requirement that transfers sit out a year before playing for their new team; in other words, his eligibility would have run out before he got a chance to play if they were not to waive the standard requirement. The team was in the right to deny him. If they were to have allowed Sherrod to transfer without sitting out, every other player with only one season of eligibility remaining that hadn’t seen the field much would be lining up to do the same. Then you’ve got a depth chart problem.

not sure if this would be the case

If it is a third or fourth stringer looking to transfer, I don’t think the coaches have a problem. I think the author of the paper misunderstood Harris’ intent; I think texas would have kept him from transferring to a school they would face later on, like UCLA, not that they would keep him from transferring to another D-IA school.
