This was somewhat unexpected with so few spots left in the class, but the recent trend has been to add a scholarship kicker every other class, continued here with Jordan. The sixth-ranked kicker in the country by Rivals, the Coppell product is known for his ability to kick the ball out of the end zone and hit a 65-yard field goal at a recent kicking camp. He chose Texas over offers from OU, Texas Tech, Iowa State, and Illinois. --GoBR--

its going to be an interesting offseason next year…

You are correct, sir

Some fringe-level players, and some who don’t march to Bennie’s rhythm will be invited to transfer.

THIS…mind you that this was without a major coaching change so I still think its worse than what may happen here next year, that being said I still don’t like the direction this is heading and I hope this only a one year deal…

Very Nice Link TP

Enjoyable read. To be perfectly honest, at this point in 2010 I would have said I would prefer the high road and Mack’s approach over any level of success. I really think the NCAA lets down the student athlete and Saban’s approach is proof positive. However, the 5-7 season was so ugly, I actually would reconsider this position.

So...

….the only two choices are to keep scholarships on everyone regardless of their ability and commitment, or to be a scumbag like Saban?

Just those two courses of action?

by danielt on Jun 28, 2011 4:32 PM CDT up reply actions

It not black and white

It’s more like a continuum…I’ve has this talk a few times on here and I am apparently on the far end of one side that says as long as a kids keeps his grades, stay out of trouble, and come to practice and follows all the teams rules (not that short of a list) then he should be allowed to keep his scholarship. If Mack came to my house and offered my kid a scholarship to UT and then "asked"’him to transfer to SFA after year 2 despite doing everything I listed above then I’d be pissed. Most kids will never play in the NFL so basically kicking them out of one of the best academic institutions seems really REALLY shtty to me.

by TowerPower on Jun 28, 2011 6:07 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Damn iPhone

Please excuse my horrible grammar ;)

That all being said UT is typically on the good side of the oversigning continuum and I hope this next year will be the exception (caused by the multiple coaching changes) and not the new rule.

Great read on Saban's antics

We could actually learn some things, but I would love to see Mack trying to persuade Augie to help him out by taking a kid off the football roll.

Don't be such a baby.

Are Marquise & DJ both on football scholarship?

Seems like I remember one or both of them originally being on a track scholly.

by robthecob on Jun 29, 2011 8:07 AM CDT up reply actions

If you play football - you count for football.

They want to avoid stashing kids under scholarships for other sports.

by Texas Wahoo on Jun 29, 2011 8:17 AM CDT up reply actions

Thanks. So this is an NCAA rule or it's just a UT / Mack guideline?

I seem to remember now that as soon as both of ‘em played their first football game, they counted for football. Someone mentioned covering some of these guys via baseball but I can’t think of a single college-legit baseball or basketball player on this football team. Quandre maybe did something else? Any ideas?

by robthecob on Jun 29, 2011 8:25 AM CDT up reply actions

The NCAA rule states that

if a player is on scholarship and plays football he counts towards the football 85 limit even if its not his main sport, if the players does not play football his scholarship would count towards basketball’s total next and then baseball, I’m not sure after that or if there is a qualifying rule for women’s sports.

by TowerPower on Jun 29, 2011 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm sure the football coach loves being 'singled out' in this rule.

Thanks for that clarification, TP. Yeah, there’s probably a good reason why they wrote the rule that way. If any loophole is going to get abused, I’m sure it was one having to do with football.

Wow.

Another schollie on a kicker. Exciting. Good thing we have no other needs.

by danielt on Jun 28, 2011 1:40 PM CDT reply actions

As I said, this is a bit out of nowhere,

but it’s not out of line given recent history. And considering the problems Texas has had covering kicks, having another kid on the roster who can potentially kick the ball out of the endzone can save a lot of field position. Not to mention how crucial it is to have someone who can consistently get the ball through the uprights in big moments. Given his offer list, Jordan wasn’t going to settle for a preferred walk-on spot.

I’m not in love with this move, but I’m also having trouble disliking it.

Why not offer Nick Jordan as a preferred walk – on first? Sure he could have said no, but Texas could always circle back and offer Jordan a schollie closer to Signing Day.

I think the preferred walk – on route is the way to go with kickers and punters. Ben Pruitt played in the 2011 Army All American Game and accepted a preferred walk – on spot at Texas without blinking. There’s a long line of excellent kickers lining up for a chance to make the team at Texas.

by billfromlaketravis on Jun 28, 2011 2:42 PM CDT up reply actions

There’s a difference in holding an offer and holding a commitable offer. OU is going to take a very small class in 2012, I’m not sure if OU has room for a kicker right now. Of course, that would probably change as the recruiting cycle progresses.

OU offered him 4 days ago, it’s not like Jordan was in love with OU and was getting ready to committing to the Sooners.

And I said “closer to Signing Day” not right before Signing Day. If Texas is slow playing Colin Blake, they can sure as hell slow play a kicker. Offering a kicker this early is like drafting a kicker in the second round in the NFL. Texas has more pressing needs.

How soon we forget

the games won by kickers. Most recent big game I can think of was the 2010 Big XII championship game.

Having a quality kicker is no longer a plus in the college game, it has become a necessity.

by realmccoy on Jun 28, 2011 6:17 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Mack is said to prefer a kick off specialist (Russ) AND a place kicker (Jordan). Mack has concerns about dead leg in his place kickers. If one of the kickers is leaving, it’s probably Pruitt and he isn’t even on scholarship. Unfortunately, I think we’re looking at Texas taking a scholarship kicker every 2 years. Just another point of contention between myself and the Mad Clapper.

Would Tend to Agree With You

It does get frustrating seeing a kicker signed when there are players like Kendall Sanders that cant get an offer. However, do not want to lose sight of the fact this is a big day for Nick – and props are in order for him.

When a kicker gets in a funk in the NFL, he gets cut & replaced ASAP.

If your college kicker gets in a funk, you better have a legit backup plan or you’ll lose games.

Kicking it out of the end zone

is what excites me. Maybe my memory tends to exaggerate a bit, but it seems like in the last couple of years, 90% of our kick-offs were caught between the 10 and 15 yard line. We should not be giving away that kind of field position. I’m looking forward to a lot of non-returnable kick-offs.

Indecision may or may not be my problem.

by rktlaw on Jun 28, 2011 6:30 PM CDT reply actions

15 is a slight exageration...

I’d say the average kick by my estimation was around the 5 yard line which some coaches prefer, but I’m with you as bad as our kick coverage has been lets boot it through the uprights every time.

by TowerPower on Jun 28, 2011 6:51 PM CDT up reply actions

Yeah,

I don’t know. This is one of those times where I kind of defer to those who know more than I.

2 schollie kickers and a 3rd that is a walk-on All American, all battling each other for the duties in all phases of the kicking game – That doesn’t seem like a bad scenario or a waste to me.

That being said, this does make the numbers even more tight for this class, who most thought would only be 21-23.

I do know that if Peat, Theus, Agholor, Torshiro-san, Geno and DG-B called tomorrow and said sign us up, the staff would find room. What does this mean for Blake? Sanders? Thomas? Santos? Others? Who knows?

Maybe the staff knows of attrition that we don’t.

by SwimTexas on Jun 28, 2011 6:45 PM CDT reply actions

21-23 still seems right...

We are at 18…
19 is reserved for an OT and honestly I doubt we’d keep an offer out for both Peat AND Theus (nor do I think both would choose to commit to the same school). I think we shut it down at OT if either one commits.

20 and 21 are both for DB’s, so any combo of Geno, Sanders, Blake, and Thomas would do, but I also think we shut it down after we get our 2 (only exception would be if Geno keeps us in a horse rave till the end).

After that the remaining spots simply luxury pick up…

22 and possibly 23/24 would be for defensive wild cards like Agholor, Toshiro, and Ward that we may recruit all the way until NSD but odds are we don’t land all three.

And I know we’d take DBG in a heartbeat no matter what so worst/best case scenario he’d be #25 but realistically he’d probably be our #23 which is what most said we’d be at.

by TowerPower on Jun 28, 2011 7:20 PM CDT up reply actions

kicker?

Really? I wish the kid the best and I hope he never reads this, but WTF? Can’t offer blake or sanders, but offer a kicker in June? I don’t understand the rush and probably more importantly the need. Let’s worry about scoring TDs before we worry about extra pts. Glad he can kick thru the endzone, but we only kicked off like 3 times a game last yr

by codaxx on Jun 28, 2011 8:27 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

fgs

I know full well about FGs. I assumed people would go beyond that. Offense struggled, so wouldn’t that scholarship at this moment have more value unused than to fill it with a kicker

umm...no
wouldn’t that scholarship at this moment have more value unused than to fill it with a kicker

if you mean used for another recruit then yes, most of us agree with that but I trust that Mack knows what he’s doing.

When you struggle to put up touchdowns ...

… you sure as heck better get a good field goal kicker.

by robthecob on Jun 29, 2011 8:21 AM CDT up reply actions

3 players are said to be very hot water, and that’s not counting the depth chart attrition in late August / early September. You might be on to something Swim. I don’t think we have the roster flexibility to offer a kicker just yet though. My hope is Texas offers Blake soon and some how gets into the Dalton Santos sweepstakes. I love Justin Thomas, but I think another short DB is redundant.

by billfromlaketravis on Jun 28, 2011 9:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Agree on Blake

and I don’t think Thomas is getting an offer.

Good kicker

We played him in hs. I actually blocked one of his kicks. He booted every kick out of the end zone or to the back.

by Longhorn11 on Jun 29, 2011 12:18 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Important upgrade

We have no one now who kicks out of the end zone. Instead, we have shoddy coverage and stupid penalties. Much better to start the opponent on the 20 with no momentum than risk a big run back.
