Memories of Arizona State

Before we start looking at the 2011 Longhorns vs. 2011 Sun Devils, it's worth flashing back to the last time the two clubs met in 2009. This Arizona State team is an entirely different animal, but it's still fun to reminisce.

In the first game, Texas took on ASU ace Mike Leake. The Sun Devils staked Leake to a 6-0 lead but a Cameron Rupp homer cut the lead in half and the miracle comeback was on. The Horns would score 10 unanswered runs and got a dominating 5.2 innings of relief from freshman Taylor Jungmann for a 10-6 win.

The two teams met again three nights later and it was Leake again on the mound against Cole Green. The score was tied at two when ASU got a run off of closer Austin Wood in the top of the 9th. Brandon Loy struck out to start the Texas half of the 9th. Cameron Rupp worked a 3-1 count. A prodigious clout followed and the game was tied. Two batters later, the Connor Rowe knocked the first pitch he saw over the left field wall and the Horns were off to face LSU.

Check out the entire 9th inning here:

Prodigous clout.

Wow, that’s probably my second-favorite Craig Way call ever, after the obvious choice of Vince scoring the touchdown in the Rose Bowl.

Pat Murphy

Surprised no mention of him and what happened shortly thereafter.

I was in Belize during that CWS.

That night we were hanging out in the shitty little sports bar with a satellite dish at the beach on Caye Caulker and I went insane when Rowe hit that homer. No one there knew what to make of me…

How quickly we forget the details

I had forgotten about having to come back twice against ASU. I remembered the regional for the ages going 25 innings with BC and then the come-back/walk off grandslam against Army. I remembered that we went three games against TCU in the Super Regional and almost lost the first game in Omaha to a surprise team (Southern Miss, maybe?). And I remember most of the championship series (including Taylor Jungmann introducing himself to the rest of the world in dominating fashion). But I did not remember the frustration and elation that came in each of those games against ASU.

As the Regional is evidence, this year’s team will have plenty of drama the rest of the way, whether that be just this weekend or all the way to a championship. There will be blown leads, impressive comebacks, and surprising heroes. (I remember saying to my wife when Connor Rowe stepped to the plate, “This guy is due for a homerun.”) Hopefully there will be enough ups this weekend to get us to Omaha. But we can save that discussion for another thread.

Thanks for the post!

I was telling a friend of mine about this game just last night, and thought I may have been a little too heavy with the drama, but after watching it again, I actually may have understated just how incredible it was.

Indecision may or may not be my problem.

What a great couple of games that was...

thanks for taking us down memory lane. Sometimes we forget just how great it is to be a Longhorn fan. Although we don’t always win, you can be sure that it is always fun to watch and that we most often field a competitive team.

I have one question though. I thought ASU was banned in baseball for postseason play until next year? How are they even available in this year’s tournament? Am I wrong, did they get the penalty reduced or did they get an OSO/USC/Auburn slap on the wrist and can simply ignore the NCAA which seems to be trending lately these days?

They were banned, but appealed

think lane kiffin skirting the schollie limit at USC. A stay of execution, most likely. If they lose the appeal, the ban happens next year.

I wish I could play little league now... I'd kick some fuckin' ass.

A Fond Memory

I was in Vegas that night and they happened to have the game on the Board so I of course took the Horns.

Ended up watching the 9th at Caesar with Pete Rose sitting to my immediate left with what I presume was an Escort while betting on the Ponies.

A great night indeed!

I was at Lake Fork at the Skeeter Owners Tourney

Watching at Fishermans Cove, no one paying much attention most of the game but crowd at the bar got a little more focused towards end of the game. My dad was with me and sd ’let’s go’, I told him you never ever quit on this team. Rupp hit his homer and I told him let’s see what happens next, then Rowe…. I went nuts and was high fiving people that had no idea what the heck I was talking about an hour earlier.

Time for the Super Regionals already!!

Let’s play some baseball!!

The longer this season lasts the closer we are to a new offensive scheme for the football team. Two games and then on the the CWS.

Random thoughts about #26

The Brewers scout who helped pick Taylor Jungmann used to work for the Yankees and scouted out Derek Jeter. I just read a story about Jeter on MLB.com, and looked into him. His name is Dick Groch.

The way things are going for Jungmann I hope he makes it into the Brewers rotation soon, so we can see him down in Houston every once in a while.
