Gideon Named To Thorpe Watch List
Texas senior safety Blake Gideon was named to the Thorpe Award watch list Monday. In 2005 and 2006, Michael Huff and Aaron Ross won the award, respectively, given to the top defensive back in the country.

Congrats Blake!
Keep up the hard work and don’t worry about the list, but rather make it constantly keep an eye on you.

i LOL'd when once again a aggie commented on something that has nothing to with A&M

Miketag is still butt sore
from losing Cole and Brown—-Gideon is better than any DB the Hitler Youth can produce.
LMAO
I actually thought Gideon was pretty decent for y’all until last year.
Judie, Frederick, Harris, and Campbell will all play on Sundays. Gideon will not.
tell me oh prophet

oh i do
Its just getting annoying that aggies post so much on a Longhorn site when the article they comment on has no bearing whatsoever on A&M

Well, you can only talk to the same guy so much
Before you start to hate his guts. There’s only what, two of them over on that blog? I bet they can’t stand each other now. I kinda feel bad for them. Poor Aggies.

it is even more annoying when someone who only joined a blog in April
tries to tell other people who have been commenting for years what they should and should not comment on
I have made this point here before
and I will make it again. I believe Gideon gets an unfair rap because he is a white DB.

I dont think it has anything to do with his color.
I think it has everything to do with his performance.

Etch is right. It has EVERYthing to do with his color.
People think he’s slower than average – because he’s white. People think he’s smarter than the average DB – because he’s white. People think he’s a coach’s choice to start over more talented other guys – because he’s white. Being white has nothing to do with how the coaches play him, how his teammates trust him, or how the opponents scout him. It only has to do with uninformed and critical fans. He’s been the best available player for his position and he’s made many more positive plays than mistakes. My irritation is that people criticize Gideon when they ought to be criticizing the backups that can’t supplant him for the starter’s spot. Makes no sense.

I think Wescott Ebert
Did a very decent piece on how Gideon consistently takes bad pursuit angles. Jordan Pugh played in the NFL last year. Doesn’t change the fact that he was a mediocre safety his entire career save his last game against Georgia. IMO Gideon was good his first two years, but very poor last year. No way you can project him as one of the top safeties in the nation coming off of last season.

Just go back to the Aggie site and complain about the LHN and how we cheat by airing high school games

Just because he's an Aggie
doesn’t mean he’s not allowed to have an opinion. As long as he’s playing nice — which he is right now — he’s perfectly within his rights to comment on this site, even if the post doesn’t have anything to do with the Aggies.

actually, that piece highlighted a poor playcall by Boom
Gideon’s difficulty was just one thing wrong on that play
There were three or four things wrong before the ball was even snapped that contributed to Gideon failing to make the play there.
I don't think skin color really has anything to do with it
Gideon is judged harshly because he dropped that interception against Tech in ’08
After that, people were just looking for a reason to continue to hate him.
It's probably a mix of factors
but I’m not sure if that was one of them. After his sophomore year, when he had 6 picks, I don’t really recall too many criticisms of Blake, at least from the Longhorn fanbase.
I hate to agree with you
but I have been saying that since ’09.

No fan is any more bitter than me about that dropped INT.
I equate it with the Craig Curry muff in costing UT a national title. But to hate the kid for an honest mistake would be ridiculous for me to do, as a fan. Gideon, Curry, Jackie Smith, Scott Norwood, etc… are a whole heckuva lot more bitter & hurt by those missed opportunities than any of us monkeys. People need to keep it in perspective. You’ve still gotta realize that these players are people and always support Longhorn kids that do right.

i dont know
But it is stupid of you to just say he won’t play in the NFL when you have no clue if he will or won’t.

You're right about that.
Bill Bates, Steve Tasker, Kenny Gant, … the list goes on. Still surprises me when a critic says a good athletic college player won’t play on Sundays. It’s just plain inaccurate.
Well, he's on the Thorpe watch list. You do the math.
Evidently, you’re in the minority. This is a national list, not just Austin. Guess there are plenty of other opinions out there that think he’s gotten to be a very polished player. Everyone around here knows Gideon’s limitations but, the fact is, he’s been very solid for 3 years.
Which you will get on if you receive any
Kind of mention for conference awards. If you are 3rd team all conference you will make the watch lists

Yeah, I've got no problem at all with him being ON the list.
He’s a very deserving candidate. However, unless he has a great breakthrough year, it’s a pretty far longshot that he’ll be a finalist. Gotta do better than last year. We’ll see.
Yeah, before the season starts it appears they'll hype any
Ol’ Punch and Judie Judy.

Does this mean we have to start him again this year?
Can’t believe he is the best we got.

How does Gideon fit in the new defense?
No one can argue that Blake Gideon had a bad year last year, fitting in well with the majority of the defense on an individual level. While it can be debated whether Gideon’s performance was an aberration or more of the same from previous years, the more imperative question is, “What will we get from him this year?”
How do Gideon’s abilities and limitations fit within the new defensive system that is being installed? Is it possible that Diaz’s system will maximize his strengths so that he finds himself a Thorpe finalist at the end of the season? Will we get more of the same from last season, making this selection a nice gesture for a four-year starter? Or is it too early to tell?
Obviously all of us hope to see his face on the awards show at the end of the season, but is that a reasonable hope? While I am sure one of the upcoming preview sections will touch on this, I thought a post dedicated to his production this upcoming season would be a good spot to have this discussion. Any takers?
I know some folks aren't fans of his...
but the guy plays hard and has been a consistent contributed for three years. By the way…sometime late this year he has to be getting close to a Texas record for number of starts right? He did start his entire freshman year right? I’m trying to think of anyone in the last ten years that started (and stayed) all four years.

Didn't your previous QB
Start for 4 years straight?
by miketag on Jul 12, 2011 4:00 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
He missed some games though because of injury
I think Gideon might have literally started every game thus far.
Oh yea
I think you’re right. Then I suppose Colt would win out over Blake since Colt played in a bowl game every year.
Yeah, the missed bowl invite last year is what did it.
There’s gotta be some other Longhorns out there (besides at QB) that have started every game of their career, huh? There were fewer games in a season, “back in the day”, but seems like somebody else has done it too. Dan Neil? Roy Williams or BJ Johnson?
Gideon
has started every game, but won’t reach Colt’s mark because the Longhorns missed the bowl game last year. He should finish one game behind McCoy assuming he starts every game this season, which is likely.

I admit my surprise
But, the other guys from the Big XII really aren’t vastly better than him. He has a good a shot as the rest of them I think.
Don't be such a baby.
Who are the other safeties from the Big 12
On the watch list?
by miketag on Jul 14, 2011 3:43 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
I think Gideon is better than a lot of us give him credit for
But I also recognize that he’s a situational liability.
That's fo sure! Scott's got potential but I hope he's gotten some quickness this off-season.
I expect Kenny V. to have a monster breakout kind of year.
