Chris Whaley Splitting Reps At DE and DT
Once called the "best running back in the country" by Mack Brown, redshirt sophomore Chris Whaley has now made transitions from running back to H-back to defensive end.
Now it appears that the 280-pound Whaley is working some inside at defensive tackle in an attempt to shore up depth at the position as coaches try to find a player to work beside star senior Kheeston Randall.

Best case scenario
Whaley grows into a Lamarr Houston type player. Hopefully Chris can give Texas something as a swing guy this season, and become a solid DT by next year.

Good Point BFLT
When I saaw the headline I thought that it was just strange and no one had spun down from RB to DT – but I forgot that Lamarr was a HS RB too. If Whaley could be 80% the beastiness of Lamar – I would be elated.

There's a kid at Elysian Fields,
2013 DT prospect Isaiah Golden, who plays some running back for his team. Henry Melton is also going to play DT this fall for the Bears.

As a Bears fan
I am really excited about Melton’s role on the Bears defense. He is versatile enough to play out on the edge and then move inside on pass rush situations.

Mack Brown should not be allowed
to evaluate running backs. His ideal seems to be Eddie George. Eddie George is not a prototypical running back. Johnathan Gray and Christine Michael are prototypical running backs.

Thank goodness most of RB evals appear to be in Major’s very capable hands. 2013 RB evaluations should be interesting, but Major knows what he’s doing.

Is there any evidence that Major's hands are particularly capable in that area?

Right now it's just a theory.

Precisely my point
Also, neither Ken Rucker nor Major Applewhite really ever did a particularly impressive job with the running backs, although Rucker’s return from medical problems did sort of coincide with Jamaal’s explosion in 2007.
It’s sort of a shame that Texas probably can’t hire back Mike Haywood, because he was a lights-out RB coach.

With a new OL coach, we'll have a chance to examine whether RB coaching is a distinct issue.

And recruiting evaluation capability too, to a certain extent
It’s entirely possible that the guys who were already on the team before Brown and Bergeron would’ve done a whole lot better with (a) better OL coaching, (b) better RB coaching, or © both of the above.
Of course, the OL recruits might’ve done better with better coaching as well. They may well have been more talented than anyone Iowa or Wisconsin recruited over the same timeframe, but whether it was coaching or the talent, the guys obviously didn’t perform like those teams’ lines.

I don't think anyone is faulting him for continuing to grow.
The kid got a lot bigger and Mack should have had the foresight to take more than one RB in the 2009 class. Even Rivals moved the kid from a RB to an athlete because of his size.
Do not be distracted by what you see, but be transformed by what you believe.
Not sure whether to laugh, or cry, or shrug about this
Laugh — How could Mack choose just one RB, and not have a better feel for what his body would evolve into?
Cry — How could Mack choose . . .
Shrug — After a while, you run out of positions where you can put somebody. What’s left? Third-team kickoff specialist? Best of luck to the young man. If he keeps trying and hustling, guess that’s all we can ask.
I like it
Whaley’s taken so well to putting on good weight, Ced Reed has been looking like he can contribute this year, and we could use some more competition pressure at the 2nd DT position.
