Texas S Christian Scott Reinstated, Suspended 3 Games
After pleading no contest to his misdemeanor assault charge, Texas senior safety Christian Scott has been reinstated to the team, but will serve a three-game suspension. Scott has not participated in any team activities since his arrest on August 8 and will practice only with the scout team while he serves his suspension.
With the breakout fall camp from Adrian Phillips, as well as more steady play from Kenny Vaccaro, the path to playing time will be difficult for Scott, who never fit well with Blake Gideon at safety last season. The best-case scenario for him at this point is probably some action on special teams and a handful of occasional reps -- this arrest was bad news for what was left of his Longhorn career.

Exactly.
Solid insurance policy, but really nothing more at this point. Too bad for him, but it might have happened anyway even if he hadn’t made such a big mistake.

High hopes
We had pretty high hopes for him last season, if I recall. Even anointing him to replace ET. But I drank a lot last season and a lot of my perceptions are hazy at best.
Your memory serves you correctly --
Scott was definitely a part of the problem last season, despite those high hopes for him, mostly stemming from those plays in the Kansas game in 2008.

I don't know what is slower ...
… Gilbert’s pass-delivery or Scott’s play-recognition and path to the ball. I think both have it in ‘em to make the improvement but, right now, it’s what’s holding both of ’em back.

Is this a vague reference to the Fast Times at Ridgemont High scene?
I don’t think anything can help Scott at this point. He hasn’t showed much yet in his career.
It's making light of an immature mistake
If we went 10-3 last year it would be far easier to say goodbye. 5-7 not so much.

not really happy about this
Open to someone presenting a different perspective, but I’d prefer we take a tougher approach and set the example for the rest of college football to follow. Granted, his actions didn’t rise to the level that are alleged in relation to the LSU players, but battery should not be tolerated.

It's not tolerated.
Scott wasn’t going to be able to participate in any team-related activities until he resolved the charge against him. He hasn’t done anything with the team since the arrest. If Scott had wanted to contest the charge, he never would have played for Texas again. By pleading no contest and admitting responsibility for what he did, Scott will now have that opportunity again, but not before a fair suspension of the non-conference season and having to scrap back up the depth chart after playing on the scout team until he serves that suspension. I don’t see this as anything other than fair.

I understand that your’s will probably be the popular position, but if he played for Oklahoma, or if the lady he threw to the ground was a loved one, I think attitudes might change. No excuse for a 200 lb athlete to risk a serious injury to anyone not on the playing field.

Not trying to make excuses for what he did.
What punishment would you prefer? Kicked off the team or just suspended for half the season?

I'd prefer him off the team
Personally, I don’t want someone who would do that representing my school…or receiving a free education.

I'm not disagreeing with you but
would your position be the same if Vince Young was the offender before his last year at UT?
I just hope C. Scott gets his degree.
I'll have to defer to Coach Mack on this one.
I’m sure he has tons more knowledge of the exact incident & successive situation than do we. I don’t think Mack has ever tolerated violent behavior before. He’s prolly got a good handle on this and is trying to salvage the kid’s career (life) w/out tarnishing the program. I’ve got no problem with Mack directing this one.
I'd assumed the young man was gone
Glad he’ll have a chance to play, and I hear what UTLGrad is saying . . . I’m not thrilled with letting somebody represent the school and get on the field in front of 100,000 fans after his admission of guilt. That said, if his track record to this point had been acceptable (an academic problem is another issue), doesn’t he deserve a second chance?
UTLaw,
If the guy had any problems of this kind before, yours would most def be the popular opinion. However, that is not the case with C Scott. First time offender, I believe, and he’s still given a fair punishment. After all, young men can and will make mistakes. Giving him the death penalty equivalent for this would have been wrong. Shouldn’t you know this? Ha.
I dunno how I feel about this,
I like to believe that people can change and am not necessarily against him playing again, but I would have liked to have seen more than 40 hours of community service. Stress management class is good, and so is paying restitution, but what about individual counseling, too? I am a little concerned with the whole violence against women, thing…
Agree that it is disturbing that he assaulted a female,
and it does seem like some individual counseling might be in order. Hopefully it’s something that he can either address during the stress management counseling or on his own. The school has counseling services that are available to him.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but this was the car repo thing right?
I don’t think it stems from feelings about women – I’m guessing he would have done the same thing if it were a man repoing his car. Generally, they send huge guys to repo cars for this exact reason.
