Texas Longhorn LB Demarco Cobbs Suffers Broken Arm

Buried in the Connor Wood transfer press release was this:

***LONGHORN INJURY UPDATE: Sophomore LB Demarco Cobbs sustained a right forearm fracture during practice on Tuesday and will be out indefinitely, Head Athletic Trainer for Football Kenny Boyd announced.

Cobbs has had a meteoric preseason run and was slated to see a ton of action.  That particular type of injury is a tough one to recover from, especially the position he plays.  Maybe we'll see him in a protective cast before long but long odds are against.

What was looking like a short-breath of exhale escaping preseason workouts without injury, the fix was in and Longhorns continue their decades long string of unfortunate preseason losses due to injury.

Internet says 8-10 weeks for fractured forearm.

My guess is that if it takes 10 weeks, Cobbs will take his redshirt season and come back next year. Really disappointing, as I was going to peg him as one of my breakout players this year and was really looking forward to seeing him in action. He was likely to be the best coverage linebacker on the team and reportedly did well in practice coming off the edge. And though he didn’t wrap up well at times in the spring game, he flash the capability to lay the wood.

Which side did he play on?

Tough, tough blow. Although if there’s one position on this football team that seems deep enough to “afford” an injury like this, it’s LB.

The thought of an injury on the O-line keeps me up at night.

He was playing strongside.

Cobbs was playing kind of a nickel type of position similar to that played by Shaun Lewis at Oklahoma State. In fact, Cobbs’ versatility to allow Diaz to choose whether to play Cobbs in three linebacker groupings against the spread or go nickel with Vaccaro or Phillips was going to give the Texas defensive coordinator some personnel options and that made him pretty valuable for a fourth linebacker.

Diaz defense

This really sets the Diaz defense back a bit as Cobbs was sure to be a huge cog in the Diaz wheelhouse come 2012. About as strategic an injury strike as there could be, imo.

I think in part what hurts

is that Cobbs was going to provide a unique skillset among the linebackers and that makes him hard to replace.

Agree

Redshirt him. Give him another year to bulk up and add weight. Then he can become a 3 year starter at linebacker for us.

The possible up side

With 2 senior LBs leaving after this year, and Hicks so talented he may leave early, combined with the fact that DE Depth may require us to spin down one of the two guys coming in at LB, it will be nice to have Demarco for 3 more years if that is how it works out.

We were deep this year, may not be in 2-3 years.

Just trying to find something positive.

I agree

Sometimes medical redshirts work out for the best. Look at Tray Allen this year.

Good example

If he would have come in and played hurt the year of his medical red shirt, think how thin we would be at O-line today.

Can anyone say, ... "Big 12 2012 Newcomer of the Year: Demarco Cobbs."

Been waiting for that Oklahoma kid to take the field for all this time so this is really dsappointing. I know it’s probably killin’ him not to play some ball. The silver lining is that he’ll be a BEAST in his upperclassman years after he bulks up in the year lay-off. I know we’ll miss him … & he’s gonna miss playing … but he’ll be on board as a huge contributor in UT’s national championship years coming in 2012-2014.

NO....

Why can’t we cast it and let him go? He’s a tough kid.

Kinda crazy that he's going to get playing time so early.

I just wonder how much he’s played with the ones and twos.

So does he red shirt?

Forearm for a linebacker isn’t end of the world. He could play in a hard cast right? Maybe out a few weeks max? Not sure on this one, but it’s better than a leg injury for sure. Hope he recovers quickly.

Wording is key

If it’s a fracture they can cast it and he can still play week one.
It all depends on how bi the fracture is. Now broken would take 4-6 weeks depends on the break. I’m not a doctor, but we had a guy on our football team have a fracture in his arm and play. So, he may be ok to play.

Injuries, you know there going to get you somewhere

its just a matter of hoping you have depth at that position. Just ask the Green Bay Packers. There are players that I don’t think we can replace and fortunately Cobbs is not one of those. If Randall goes down we might be doomed.

Do not be distracted by what you see, but be transformed by what you believe.

ouch

this hurts, mega-athlete injury, hope he can medical redshirt and come back. Was the best player in Oklahoma back in the day when recruited.
