Texas no. 24 in debut USA Today Coaches Poll
In what can only be considered a sign of respect for the program and the available talent for Texas, the coaches voted the Longhorns into the top 25 of the preseason Coaches Poll, sliding in at no. 24 despite the terrible 2010 season.
As expected, the powerful Sooners are no. 1, with Oklahoma State at no. 8 and Texas A&M no. 9. Missouri landed at no. 21.
After 5-7, do the Longhorns really deserve a preseason top 25 ranking?
Comments
No one deserves anything in preseason.
Because they have done nothing. Hell, fall camp just started today! No one knows anything! Which is why preseason polls are terrible ideas, especially in a sport where polls have some say in who is declared champion.

We went from the MNC
to 5-7. So, why shouldn’t we be able to go right back to the top? We have the talent, the coaches, and the facitlities. We likely won’t go back to the MNC, but we should be able to be back into the top 25. This is a pretty reasonable pre-season ranking. Let’s hope we are top 25 or better at the end of the year.
Don't be such a baby.
Not saying you can't
Because there is no arguing the collection of talent on your roster. But that said, the fall down is a hell of a lot easier to make than the climb back up IMO.

Yeah, once you go down it spirals fast
We were shell shocked last year, and Brown admitted that the depression and disappointment were more than believed. We also have so many new moving parts. BUT, with that said, we were in most of the games that we lost—so 5-7 could easily have been 7-5. I believe we have the talent and new energy to play some good football this year.

Actually, it seems like a sign of respect
For the Big Mathematically Challenged Conference Formerly Containing Between 11 and 13 Members.
Four of our conference brethren are ranked above us, three of them in the Top 10. Anybody else think A&M and OSU are a trifle over ranked?
A&M is always overrated.
But no, to OSU. They return practically their entire offense, and their defense will be better than last year.

Correct me if I am wrong
but I believe OSU’s front 7 on defense are all new, none returning

Us being ranked preseason shows just how big a joke the preseaon rankings are

If we meet most people’s expectations (8-4), then that ranking is probably where we will end up. Big name schools with 8 wins finish in the top 25. Smaller programs (non BCS) with need 9 or 10 wins to break the top 25.
Going 8-4 means we only lose to OU, A&M, OSU, and Mizzou who are all currenlty in the top 25 (or 10 if you throw out Mizzou). That seems reasonable to me. I wouldn’t have voted us at the end of the top 25, but I can’t blame someone for doing it.
OU sux. That is all.

I hope they have an unblemished record too…..as in 0 wins……..

Insane.
Preseason polls are a joke and this only proves that.
Not that I don’t think Texas won’t do well, but these are the clippings that let 18-22 year old kids have a sense of entitlement. Which is a lot of what happened last year…

Interesting that we are the only team in the top 25 that have a losing regular season record.

Equally interesting
that 5 members of , what many consider, a “weak” conference are in the Top 25.
There is not a situation or individual that cannot be improved by the addition of chocolate.
I was thinking the same
if the Big XII can maintain consistency at the top (and let’s be honest, we’re talking mostly about the Aggies and Cowboys here), this conference may have some staying power… but I’m still skeptical.
Preseason rankings
Doesn’t Shouldn’t matter, but unfortunately it does. This poll and others will be used as a standard deviation, of sorts, and will change based on these rankings as the season goes on.
Preseason rankings have the awful consequence of granting both punishment and clearance to pure speculation.

Position
If you are at the top of the heap, the starting position matters. This is especially true for the one-loss teams at the end of season.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.
There should be no polls of any kind until the first BCS rankings come out.
Otherwise, those early polls will strongly influence the polls that count.
Odd logic
Why not just suggest waiting to place ANY rankings until after the final week? After all, a lot can happen between week 8 and 14. Don’t the polls in week 8 have a greater influence over the week 14 polls than the preseason poll? The polls that come out once the BCS starts releasing standards don’t count anymore than the poll released today.
The system will always be flawed to some extent. Why remove a big part of what brings emotion into the game? As fans, would it be more fun for SMU to beat Texas A&M or to beat 8th ranked Texas A&M? Is it a bigger statement for App St to walk into the Big House and beat Mich or to pull off the monumental upset of beating #5 Michigan?
Taking a look at the preseason poll against the final poll will always show that what actually takes place is always different than expectations. There will always be a team or two that feel punished by the initial ranking. Few of those teams over the years will have a justified complaint. However, catering to these complaints would be favoring the greater of two evils.
Ummm
The BCS rankings use the polls. So you kinda need those first.
I'm assuming
He poorly worded his intent to have the first week polls are released is the same week. Obviously, without the polls the BCS rankings don’t exist as the human polls make up 2/3 of the ranking.

The fact that he NO job
Is such a sad statement. Mack’s loyalty crippled the program. Hate to knock a guy whose worst trait is he is too loyal, but the job of a CEO is not to be super nice to your friends.
Don't be such a baby.
It is Macks achilles heel
and it could ultimately cost him. He is a fine man, but being the head coach is a lonely job.
I think Mack tries to keep his word and that, and his loyalties, were exposed in the Simms/Applewhite controversy.

It shows respect for the new coaching hires. And yes, the dormant talent.
And any team that has their own network should get an automatic top 25 preseason ranking.
And the Boomer Losers???
powerful Sooners are no. 1,
Why because the LandThieves beat an unranked UConn team in a BCS Game…… HaHa!!
You nailed it.

Nope
but IMO you deserve and are much more likely to earn your ranking than Auburn. I can buy the argument that you will got 8-4 this year and therefore will find your way into the top 25 at the end of the year. I have a hard time seeing Auburn win more than 6 games.
to much time
and to many writers.
This time of the year you have baseball and vacation ( and NFL strike that is over), other wise a bunch of writers on staff collecting a pay check. Since they can’t do anything else might a well have them write anything like top 25 teams in college football.
