Stuck In The Big XII With OU

For all of you that have severe tired head from realignment talk and are still confused as to just what the hell is going on, I figured why not let Stealers Wheel (posing as Longhorns fans) sum it up for us with their timeless hit...

Stuck In The Big 12 With OU

Well I can't believe what I heard last night,
David Boren said something that just ain't right,
He wants Beebe knocked out his chair,
And LHN strung up by the short hairs...

Pac 12 to the left of UT,
ACC to the right, here we are,
Stuck in the Big 12 with OU.

Yes we're stuck in the Big 12 with OU,
And we're wondering what it is we should do,
It's so hard with every school trying to save face,
Losing control, yeah, we're all over the place,
Pac 12 to the left of UT, Big East to the right,
Here we are, stuck in the Big 12 with OU.

Well OU started out saying nothing,
When Aggie bolted and the shit hit the fan,
And then the rest of the Big XII started bawlin,
And OU called Larry Scott back to say,
Please.... Please.....

Trying to make some sense of it all,
But realignment makes no sense at all,
Going independent startin' to sound better for sure,
'Cause We're Texas and we don't give a shit anymore
Pac 12 to the left of UT, SEC to the right,
Here we are, stuck in the Big XII with OU.

Well OU started out saying nothing,
When Aggie bolted and the shit hit the fan,
And then the rest of the Big XII started bawlin,
And OU called Larry Scott back to say,
Please.... Please.....

Well I can't believe what I heard last night,
Larry Scott said something that just ain't right,
He said the Pac 12's gonna stay right there,
And Dodds and Castiglione said, "ain't we a pair,"
Pac 12 to the left of UT,
ACC to the right, here we are,
Stuck in the Big 12 with OU.

OU, suck it up. We're in this together whether you like it or not. Quit acting like everything isn't going to work out for us. You know we will be fine.

A&M, we will call you about the damage deposit later. Just get the hell out already. Enjoy the SEC and realizing your destiny of becoming Mississippi State 2 - Eclectic Boof-A-Ewe.

To the rest of what's left of the Big IIX, take a Xanex. Let's see if we can't figure this thing out just like we did last year. The conference, even without Nebraska, is probably better top to bottom than it's ever been. We don't need to blow it up.

Yes, I'm sure our TV network gives your remote control reason to push pause, but we're just getting top dollar for our Third Tier Rights. And it's not like Texas didn't already have more money than Davey Crocket before this deal. Nothing has really changed other than we can now watch a lot more Lady Longhorn Basketball.

So what do you say we all just get back to football season. There are a couple of big time conference games this weekend. The A&M-OSU game will draw national interest and OU vs. Mizzou should be big as well. Us Horns have got a big game against upstart 3-0 Iowa State coming up the following weekend and the Clones were so excited, they apparently just got a new Jumbotron down at Rent-A-Center. And you know they don't want the Big 12 to go away. That sucker was bought with a Payday Loan backed up with future conference TV checks. And why are those TV checks so big? Well not all, but a lot of it has to do with the fact that UT brings a whole shit load of viewers to the bargaining table and network execs know The Eyes Of Texas really are upon you.

Long live the Big XII.

Last time I checked the majority of those “viewers” you are spouting off about are in the Dallas market. Take a poll – OU has as many “viewers” in the Dallas markest as texa$$ does. Check out the Cotton Bowl – doesn’t appear that burnt orange extends over half way around that dilapidated old stadium…perhaps you’ve looked at that ugly orange so long you can’t tell where it turns red! typical - missing the point

I don’t want to slam OU – obviously a top football power. But you are not Texas – and can never be Texas. The viewers in Dallas? All that proves is there is so little going on in Okie that you jave to move to Texas. Just like the rest of the USA. Texas has 4 of the 10 largest cities in the USA. Okie has like zero. 45% of all new job in? You guessed it – Texas. The attractiveness of Texas goes well beyond the football brand. The fact of the matter is if you go to the PAC without Texas – your games won’t be on in Dallas. The PAC will not want you – because you are just not that attractive. Its not personal – everyone respects your football – its just business.

OU admits to bluffing.

You fooled no one.

On Wednesday, a source told The Oklahoman that Oklahoma was using the Pac-12 for leverage to get some concessions from the Big 12:
"But frankly, we wanted the impression out there that we might go to the Pac-12 because that gave us some leverage," the source said. "We were using that as leverage to say, ‘Hey, you want us to stay? Let’s have some of these reforms.’"

Part of their demands will apparently be met accompanied by a collective eye-roll by Texas leadership I’m sure.

Big 12 Conference commissioner Dan Beebe is working on an agreement to leave his position, the Kansas City star reported Wednesday night.

The Star cited two sources with knowledge of Beebe’s decision.

Dan seems to be handling the news well. @DanBeebe

Not saying it is not true, but it makes no sense for OU to bluff...

and make demands for big changes; for one thing, I’m curious what those things are exactly. Some, like Bebee were stated directly, some were vague (LHN), and some were not stated. UT might give into some of that but probably not all especially with OU having no leverage if bluffing.

OU made a power play in this round of realignment and it didn't work out for them.

I’m sure they thought they would be welcomed into the PAC-12 with open arms with or without Texas and that wasn’t the case.

I think their “demands” were just a way to save face. Beebe is an easy scapegoat in all of this and they had to have known Texas wasn’t going to share LHN revenue, but it’s an opportunity to put the spotlight on them for causing BIG-12 upheaval.

My source close to the program can beat up your source close to the program!

by burrito on Sep 22, 2011 2:45 AM CDT up reply actions

It's sort of a tough position as a Texas fan

The programs that are running their mouths can make just as much money without Texas (I’m sure if OU ditches Okie State they can go to the SEC at least, and even Missouri, the great boasters of 2010, apparently got an invite), and the programs that really need Texas aren’t mouthing off at all.

So we get rhetoric that isn’t technically true about Texas buttering Oklahoma’s bread, and totally accurate rhetoric about Iowa State’s money woes that reinforces every negative stereotype about Texas.

I don’t know what the solution is, but I suspect the old advice to pick on someone your own size would be good to follow. Talking smack on Iowa State’s athletic department budget is ugly.

I liked the song though.

Thank you for sharing

I suppose the lingo about ISU could be construed as mean spirited, but the intent wasn’t to belittle, simply to add a little perspective to the ridiculousness. Big XII Schools – big or small – pointing angry fingers at UT is tantamount to professional golfers complaining about all the attention Tiger Woods gets while waiting in line to cash a $300,000 check for barely making the cut at the last tournament. If you’re feeling guilty about the Longhorn Network, there’s a plethora of other perks UT benefits from that add to our competitive advantage that you can apologize for first.

I also don’t think you’ve seen ISU’s Jumbotron. It’s huge. It looks like the launch space portal from the movie Contact. Congrats to them on the facilities upgrade and a great start to the season. I will feel fortunate if UT can escape Ames with a win and when is last time any of us said that?

by 54b on Sep 22, 2011 2:28 AM CDT up reply actions

I may have been a little oversensitive

I feel terrible for Iowa State. We get lumped in with them, but we could end up in the Sun Belt and basketball would keep paying the bills (it ain’t football that keeps KU in the top 3 in the conference every year in revenue), but they’re stuck. And it’s no fault of theirs.

Texas is a huge state with lots of oil; Kansas is a small state with no oil, but one that had the good fortune to attract James Naismith 110 years ago; Iowa is a small state with no oil, no Naismith, and a big brother that doesn’t take care of them. The fans are great; they travel well, even when the team is lousy, and they’re as nice as can be when you visit. And they’re going to screwed eventually because the schools that are already richer than they’ll ever be aren’t content with that; they have to be even richer.

I know people on here want what’s best for Texas, but do Texas folks feel bad about what happens to Iowa State?

by KSinDC on Sep 22, 2011 2:52 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes. We do.

But in the end it really is about furthering our brand. I mean, if anything I feel bad for Iowa State because there’s not much we can do. We can’t help how other schools react when we attempt to further our brand based upon the guidelines set by all big12 schools.

by 40A on Sep 22, 2011 9:55 AM CDT up reply actions

I guess it depends on whether or not you believe a school like ISU...

or Baylor or another institution that has a smaller enrollment and less available funding belongs in the Big Time college football arena. For me, I’m not a fan of super conferences and think there is value to keeping small and large institutions together in conferences. David/Goliath match-ups and upsets are part of the fabric and fun of CFB. So yes, I would feel bad if ISU just shriveled up and D-1 Football because a 64-Team Premiere League or NFL Jr.

I think the bigger issue is whether ISU thinks it’s worth it to keep trying to keep up with the big boys if they never really have a reasonable shot at winning a title or conference championship. And how do they define success?

One thing that should give you hope is the fact that all of UT’s money and facilities didn’t prevent them from going 5-7 last year. And teams such as UConn and Wake Forest have been able to break through and go to BCS games. I was really disgusted with OSU last year for not breaking through as they seemingly had the Big XII South nearly handed to them and still lost to a relatively average OU team last year. A&M should have broken through too….would A&M be going to the SEC if they won the Big XII last year, who knows?

Unfortunately, money matters. I think Boone Pickens has certainly proven that. OSU has become markedly better since he infused them with cash. But tradition, history, geography matter too and hopefully they prevail to keep the Big XII together.

I hope TCU get their justice as well. I give them a lot of credit. They could have folded their tents back 94, but they stuck with it. Took them several years, but they’re easily one of the best programs in the land right now and they’re doing it without a ton of money…though I’m sure it doesn’t hurt to be located in a recruiting hotbed on top of Barnett shale.

I guess ISU should hope Ethanol makes a comeback.

What difference...

do you think the proposed rule change regarding equal sharing of Tier 1 & II revenues will make to a school like Iowa State’s athletic department and football program? I ask you since it sounds like you are alot more familiar with their situation than I am.

by Juan Grande on Sep 22, 2011 8:53 PM CDT up reply actions

I would guess that ISU has been at the very bottom of the appearance list for FB and BB

So I’d guess this makes a bigger difference for them than for anyone else. I don’t know that dollar figures on the FB and BB contracts, but I’d guess it’s at least several million dollars a year increase (UT, KU and OU should see the biggest decreases), and since ISU has the smallest athletics department in the Big 12, a few million dollars shift makes a bigger difference there than anywhere else.

The question I really can’t answer is how ISU should best spend that money. They have a pretty decent basketball tradition, and even with weak performance lately, they were still 4th in attendance last year (behind KU, UT, and KSU). They ought to be able to build a regionally powerful brand that would at least guarantee them an income stream whenever the Big XII eventually breaks up.

by KSinDC on Sep 22, 2011 11:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Isn't this all just a little disingenuous?

What keeps not being brought up in this conversation (yet everyone knows) is that Texas has been planning to go indie anyway….just not right now until they can get their ducks in a row, and no sense of conference loyalty will stop them when they are ready. So all this talk about creating longterm stability for the Big 12 is not only complete bs, it’s an insult to everyone’s intelligence, don’t ya think?
