Texas WR John Harris To Miss Iowa St. Game

An injured foot will keep Texas redshirt freshman wide receiver John Harris from playing against Iowa State next week, the school announced on Thursday.

Harris is one of four Texas players to throw for a touchdown this season and distinguished himself with his blocking effort early in the season. With the Longhorns down to two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster with Garrett Gilbert's shoulder surgery earlier in the week, Harris was a candidate to play emergency quarterback after playing quarterback as a senior in high school, though true freshman wide receiver Miles Onyegbule was a better pure passer during his own stint at quarterback his final prep campaign.

The injury to Harris could represent an opportunity for both Onyegbule and sophomore Darius White, who was buried on the depth chart with the return of Marquise Goodwin and inconsistent play on the field. Though Bryan Harsin's offense will provide more chances for White than he would have received under Greg Davis, the fact of the matter is that White needs to start making plays soon.

White needs to get more aggressive in his blocking. I think we have more use for a WR who blocks but can’t catch, rather than one who can catch but misses blocks.

Yeah,

White’s blocking needs to improve and his hands have been a bit sketchy too.

Think this is a big deal

Not a big deal in the sense that we’ll lose games, but a big deal in the sense that we’ll feel this if he’s gone for any period. The blocking he provides is often the difference between 3 yards and 6 yards on the ground. Onyegbule could fill the role, just don’t think he’s as strong yet.

Maybe this is White’s opportunity. He may be the biggest disappointment thus far.
