Texas Football Recruiting: Thirsty Thursdays, The Notebook
Del Barnes Highlights (early senior) (via 247SportsStudio)
Meet 2012 Henderson QB LaBradford "Del" Barnes. More after the jump.
Why introduce the Burnt Orange Nation citizenry to another 2012 quarterback? After all Texas already has a top 100 player in Chaparrel, AZ QB Connor Brewer. Well the numbers game changed. Garrett Gilbert is likely to take a medical redshirt this season and then transfer from UT. Connor plans to enroll at Texas for the spring semester, leaving Texas with just 3 scholarship quarterbacks for 2012 season. When you play 2 quarterbacks regularly in McCoy and Ash, 3 QBs isn't much depth. Since Gilbert's injury announcement on Tuesday, Texas has begun to explore options for adding another QB to the 2012 class.
In a story first broken by Hook Em 247, Texas has requested film of Henderson's Del Barnes. Henderson is a very athletic dual threat quarterback, but looks to pass first. Barnes is listed at 6'0'' 175 pounds and ran a 4.62 at a Baylor camp. From the film, the size and speed appear legitimate. He also appears to still be growing. Barnes throws an excellent deep ball, and throws well on the run. I like his footwork, mechanics and quick release. All traits that Coach Harsin looks for in a quarterback. He has good velocity on his passes, and you don't see him strain too hard on the difficult throws. Barnes is also a leader and a winner. He led his team to a 3A Championship last year.
Barnes has drawn positive comparisons to Wisconsin QB Russell Wilson. Another lightly recruited quarterback who experienced a growth spurt.
Again at this point, all Texas has done is request film on Barnes. After Gilbert's injury, the coaches have decided to evaluate additional 2012 quarterbacks. This is a wise move in my opinion. Texas can land either Whitewright's Tyrone Swoopes or Wichita Falls Rider's J.T. Barrett in 2013. They can't land both. Barnes fits because he's a late blooming recruit without many offers. In fact, per his Rivals' page, Barnes doesn't hold any offers. It would a tough pill to swallow for a top quarterback recruit to come in with Connor Brewer and compete with sophomore David Ash. As with so many kids growing up in Texas, Barnes grew up a Texas fan. Texas can definitely get him, if they want him. Barnes' name is the first to emerge in the new 2012 QB evaluations. There will be more.
It might be wise for Texas to consider taking another quarterback in 2012 that can also play another position. The second 2012 quarterback could be buried on the depth chart once the depth improves at Texas.
Hook Em 247 spoke to Connor Brewer and he understands Texas' depth concerns at quarterback, and remains firmly committed to Texas.
Notebook entries:
* 2012 SA Sam Houston DT / DE Javonte Magee is focusing on the season. Texas is still in the mix for Magee, as is Baylor and TAMU. Magee was once considered a LSU lean, Magee is a Louisiana native, but has said recently he wants to play close to his mother. The key for Texas is to stay on Magee and get him on campus. I expect Texas to receive an official visit from Magee after Sam Houston's season. Texas is recruiting Magee as a DE.
* 2013 SA Madison DT / DE Vincent Taylor recently named a top 3, and Texas is in it with TAMU and LSU. Magee is also a Louisiana native, so LSU is a real threat here. That being said, it's good to finally have some good news about Texas and the 2013 DTs. Taylor made an unofficial visit to Texas this summer. Taylor and Elysian Fields DT Isaiah Golden appear to the top in state 2013 DTs interested in Texas at the moment. Don't sleep on Waco University's Ben Hughes, he is also interested in the Horns.
* Texas OL Coach Stacy Searels will be Tempe, AZ tomorrow to visit 2012 Corona Del Sol OT Andrus Peat. Texas is likely in Peat's top 3 along with FSU and USC. Nebraska surprisingly didn't make the cut, but Peat will visit the Huskers during Ohio State weekend. Peat has an older brother Todd at Nebraska. Coach Harsin and Coach Searels should both be in Arizona tomorrow.
* Dorial Green Beckham's final 5 was leaked to the media and Texas is in it along with Missouri, Arkansas, Alabama, and Oklahoma. There have been conflicting reports if Auburn made the cut. I'm not sure what to make of it, but you could easily switch out Alabama with Auburn. Texas expects to get an official visit from DGB. He is expected at the Missouri - OU game this weekend.
* OU and TAMU have both compiled impressive lists of expected visitors for their outstanding match ups this weekend. A loss in both or either game would be a big help to Texas recruiting. Some cancellations would also be nice.
For the record, I wanted this to be a piece on 2013 OLB targets. Unfortunately, there is very little to no film on the targets Texas might be evaluating. Possible target 2013 Harker Heights' Naashon Hughes (Camrhon Hughes younger brother) was at the Rice game and liked what he saw from Texas. Hughes plays both safety and linebacker at Harker Heights, but is already 6'4'' and 210 pounds. He could grow into a NFL sized OLB or spin down to DE. Obviously, Texas is in a good position with Hughes. I support a Hughes Brothers / Harker Heights pipeline. Be on the look out for Rockwall - Heath's Raaquan Davis and Arlington's Sammy Douglas.
I'll have a Texas High School Football Under the Lights Week 4 Preview tomorrow. I will be at the Allen - Plano game, so expect a recap on Monday. Johnathan Gray is having a tremendous night tonight against Timber Creek. I'll have something on Mr. Gray's performance tomorrow.
As always, get at me on Sundays with Bill at 5pm to talk recruiting, practice and hopefully the end of realignment.

Barnes
I really like Barnes’ film. Certainly a project, but he’s the kind of project you want to develop. Very live arm, and well developed as a passer for a dual threat QB.

Would like to see Barnes actually run the ball.
For a guy billed as a dual threat, there weren’t any clips of running plays in that highlight. As live as his feet look in the pocket, I don’t particularly care to use that as a determinant of his ability to run the football.
As for his passing ability, he does throw a nice deep ball, but I’d like to get a better look at his ability to make the type of intermediate throws that really showcase arm strength.
Overall, I would say from the film that he looks like a worthy D1 prospect, but he’s not really a guy that I think looks Texas good from a first look. I always thought landing Swoopes would be difficult with the QB depth on the roster, but now with that clearing out, I would rather Texas go all-in with he or Barrett in the 2013 class rather than picking up a guy who would be nothing more than depth barring a complete and total catastrophe at QB.

I agree partially. I think Texas should take an ATH that could play quarterback. I did like what I saw from Barnes.
I’d like Brewer to redshirt. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

If we're talking about needing basically an emergency guy,
I think Miles Onyegbule has much more upside as a quarterback than Barnes, especially in a Harsin offense.

Watched Miles in the playoffs
as a senior. He threw one of the best corner routes I’ve ever seen. Obviously doing that against high school competition is one thing but I don’t see why he would be a servicable emergency guy in a very watered down play grouping if the need ever arose.

Want a Brewer RS too
In my happy place, Ash becomes a 3.5 year starter, and Brewer is groomed to take the job from a two time National Championship winner and a Heisman winner in 2015, and we’re set at QB for 6 years.

Great stuff
I’ve still got a good gut feeling with Peat. A favorable depth chart, Searels grinding, and our best recruiter in state (I love me some Connor Brewer) give me hope to land the big man. Less confident about DGB, but I’m not worried. He’s a luxury take to me.
I know 3 QBs isn’t ideal depth, but I’m comfortable with the emergency options we have behind Ash-McCoy-Brewer next year. Taking a QB that could transition to another position makes sense, and anyone named LaBradford makes the all-name team (still behind Mr. Tenpenny though).

I like the optimism on Peat.
DGB is an enigma, wrapped in a riddle. I asked a Twitter friend what the deal is with DGB’s top 5. Should hear something back soon.
I think 4 is the magic number of scholarship quarterbacks at Texas.
by billfromlaketravis on Sep 22, 2011 11:02 PM CDT up reply actions
But 2 From Same Class?
That never works. Almost a waste of a scholly to me. One of the 2 will automatically transfer in a year – 2 at most. Snead, Kinne, Wood, Gilbert, Harris. Never thought I’d pine for the days of Matt Lordgren
Change isn't good or bad it just "is". Don Draper of Madmen
It’s not only my thoughts, it appears to be the coaches’ thoughts. They appear to want another quarterback in the 2012 class.
by billfromlaketravis on Sep 23, 2011 9:27 AM CDT up reply actions
Why a wasted scholarship?
You get depth and competition while they are on campus, and generally the better of the 2 stays. Frees up a scholarship when the other one transfers. Seems like a win-win to me.
My thoughts
I would rather go JUCO if we truly need depth. “A wasted scholarship” is way too strong – you are correct. But if we go schollie with a QB – that costs us heckuva DB. Maybe Bill can helpe me out – but I am hoping to get at least 2 of Thomas, Sanders, or Coleman and I think a QB schollie would only net us 1. (assuming we land Peat.) The real issue – it doesn’t add depth. How much depth did Connor Wood add? Zero. The real good QBs are gone the moment they sense they can’t start. The loser of the Brewer vs. Barnes battle will shirted, then transfer. It is not a waste – because if Barnes beats out Brewer it did give us an opportunity to verify which QB is truly better.
Change isn't good or bad it just "is". Don Draper of Madmen
I think the magic number is roughly 23. It remains to be seen how Texas gets there.
by billfromlaketravis on Sep 23, 2011 2:33 PM CDT up reply actions
You make good points
I guess part of my issue is that I’m concerned with the start that Brewer has had to his season, and I’m afraid we are putting our eggs all in one basket, ala the RB recruiting before last year, for a player that doesn’t seem dominant right now.
The only point I’d quibble with is this
How much depth did Connor Wood add? Zero.
The only reason is seemed like zero is because neither of our other players got hurt. If Gilbert went down last year, from a depth chart perspective at least we wouldn’t have been one hit away from having to play a walkon. I think it was definitely important to have 2 QB’s in that class. This one, with McCoy, Ash and maybe Gilbert, your point is valid.
Sorry Austin,
looked like your comment on Cobbs posted twice and I tried to delete one, but it looks like it deleted both. My bad.
For the record, Barking Carnival is reporting this evening that do-everything LB DeMarco Cobbs should be back for Oklahoma and could possibly play against ISU.

Better to Shirt at this Point?
With all that time off, it would be extremely questionable that he could impact the OU game. Does anyone know what his role will be? Is he basically a backup to Acho? Or does he have a hybrid kind of role/package for him?
Change isn't good or bad it just "is". Don Draper of Madmen
Cobbs has a very unique skill set. Excellent edge rusher and in pass coverage. Cobbs was expected to contribute heavily on third downs before getting hurt.
by billfromlaketravis on Sep 23, 2011 9:28 AM CDT up reply actions
We'll definitely need him next year
so getting more than half a season of experience this year (especially at a new position) should be a big benefit.
Yep. I thought Cobbs would redshirt, but if he can make it back it for OU, he should play this season. Excellent recovery time. Cobbs’ arm was in a sling during the UCLA game.
by billfromlaketravis on Sep 23, 2011 9:49 AM CDT up reply actions
Cobbs was playing on the strongside
And would probably replace Hicks against spread teams instead of having to go to a nickel, though Hicks has been solid in that role so far this season. Cobbs has the advantage of being faster.

Not sure if I'm sold on Javonte Magee.
The fact that he’s still considering Texas after it looked like the Longhorns dropped off his radar isn’t promising long-term, although I would consider him a take still.
As for Taylor, I’m interested in seeing how he’s developed physically since last year. The tools are definitely there, but I wonder if he might be best suited to play a 3-4 DE for A&M, though his roots in Louisiana might end up making the Tigers hard to beat when all is said and done.
I want Andrus Peat. The last real need in 2012, I think. A DB maybe, but not nearly as pressing as finding some tackles, though Cochran’s development is promising.

I've come full circle on Magee
Was not overly impressed with him last year, but from what I’ve heard around San Antonio, he is now playing to the level of his rankings. Have not seen him live this year, but the few highlights on tv have looked impressive.
I’d like to see Magee’s senior film, especially the 80 yard touchdown catch. Agreed it does sound like Magee is playing to his talent level this season. I’d remind everyone that Magee is ranked 45th on the 247 Sports Top 247, and is the top ranked uncommitted player in Texas. I hope Texas gets him.
by billfromlaketravis on Sep 23, 2011 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions
Completely agree about needing to see his senior film
His other film is meh at best, but everybody that’s seen him in person has raved about his talent, potential, and raw athleticism. I always thought he’d be best as an OT, but maybe he’s developed more defensively now.

I could see Magee as a swing guy or possibly at OL. Magee seems to want to play DE, I wouldn’t say anything about offensive line until he’s enrolled.
by billfromlaketravis on Sep 23, 2011 1:16 PM CDT up reply actions
Really need to see that new film
Because if he’s not substantially better than last year, he’s nothing more than a space-filler DT and that simply doesn’t cut it at DE.

qb depth
Not that i am opposed to taking another QB in 2012 but i dont want to “waste” a ship on someone who isnt gonna play the position ever(most likely) unless he can definitely play another position at Texas.
Is there no way to get both Swoops and Barrett in 2013? That would be ideal. Connor hopefully coming in the spring semester would be great!
I have hopes for Peat also!! 1 or 2 more DBs are a need also!!
Keep working on DGB!!
TGOD!!!!
Cochran playing well is great news! and hopefully getting Cobbs back is great bc we will need him soon!! IF Greenly is healthy any chance he gets in the rotation or RS for sure?
I’d like to see Texas another corner, a hybrid corner / safety, an OT, an ATH, and DE.
Currently, Barrett and Swoopes grade out as top 150 players. I doubt they’ll commit to the same school. I think Texas likes Swoopes better, but is hedging their bets with Barrett.
I like Connor Brewer a lot, but it wouldn’t hurt to take a project behind him, whether it be in 2012 or 2013.

Hmm, I’d probably wait until the end of the fall semester before I can feel confident about Russell being at Texas for spring ball. If Russell is allegedly close to graduating from a CC this fall, it’s reasonable to think that Russell could at least graduate in May and enroll in June with the 2012 class. Russell and Magee at Texas would be a nice coup for Coach Akina. SA Sam Houston is not an easy school to recruit.

Jonathan Gray
200+ yards and 4 TDs on the ground with a 48 yard TD reception in the 1st half against Keller Timber Creek tonight. No idea on how well or if he even played much in the second half. I believe Aledo won 62-17. The kid is just in complete beast mode week in and week out.

I like the amount of carries. The fewer the better. Keller Timber Creek is not a very good team. They were picked to finish 7th in 5 – 4A. Aledo’s district isn’t very good, look for Gray to rack up numbers in district play.

2012 Raleigh, North Carolina RB Keith Marhsall is the only back I’ve seen ranked higher than Johnathan. I like Johnathan better. Very special player. I think with Fozzy graduating after this season, I think Gray will make an impact in 2012. Imagine Gray running the Wild Horn. Chills.

Kid looks to me like Harsin's kind of QB
Moves well, good arm (better than Case’s in my opinion) and nice fakes with the ball.
I think it comes down to when does Texas want to take on a project quarterback? Why not take a project in 2012 when Connor Brewer is completely alright with taking another QB in the class? I’m in favor of getting it taken care of now.
by billfromlaketravis on Sep 23, 2011 1:07 AM CDT up reply actions
I agree
This kid is not going to scare Connor off. And if he is OK coming in as a probable career backup, then I say get the depth.
As for the current roster argument (guys like Onyegbule and Mykkele), I think they provide depth now for Harsin, but he will want depth going forward, and he will want those guys playing the position they were recruited to play. So this makes sense.
"A lot of people look for the easy way to do anything, in swimming there is no easy way." - Eddie Reese
Yep. I’m fine with Harris or Miles O as an emergency back up, but Texas can’t put themselves in a position again where they only have 2 healthy scholarship quarterbacks on the roster.

I love him.
He’s not super-tall. That might be why he hasn’t gotten boat-loads of offers. But the news that Texas is looking at him is sure to get more attention coming his way from scouts from other schools.
This is Texas. This just goes to show how deep a talent pool there is here. There are just so many schools and so many players at every position.
I hope we bring him in. Everybody’s a “project” in regards to Bryan Harsin’s system. The system he’s running at Henderson actually looks pretty multiple and complex. I’d like to see him come in and compete.

13 of his 54 passes have been for touchdowns.
I know it’s high school and the competition may not always be great, but that’s a crazy statistic. Over 25% of his completions are for touchdowns at this early stage in the season. That’s probably what caused Harsin to request his film.

Texas will always have a shot with an in state player with a solid transcript. It’s still early on Manning, and Texas has some work to do. Manning hasn’t really been hearing from Texas, I expect that to change. Watch Bo Davis today and this weekend to see where he visits. Davis should be visiting the big DT names on the board for 2013.
Texas is still in contact with Donald Hopkins and Glen Antoine, but we’re likely done at DT for 2012.

Finally,
So awesome to see a kid from my high school alma mater actually be good enough to get recruited by the Longhorns. I got to see a lot of Del in the State Playoffs last year and of course in the state championship game against Chapel Hill, where he played with a broken wrist on his non-throwing hand. He is increadibly cool under pressure and can make plays happen that you don’t think are possible. Can’t wait to see what happens.

If you aren’t an OU fan. As much as Stoops downplays it, it will be a revenge game for the returning players. Nobody likes to get knocked off the #1 spot, and getting a second chance against that opponent on your home field is something I’m sure players relish.
