Texas High School Football, Under the Lights: Week 5 Preview

Power, Passion & Glory (via fishing464)

I thought Celina needed more attention. The Boys of Fall documentary, song, t-shirt, and collectible coffee mug just didn't do the Bobcats justice.  Let this preview serve as the Friday and Saturday Nights Lights open thread. Connor Brewer is playing tonight on ESPN2 at 7:00 pm. I'll be here to discuss the game. BONUS: Recruiting quick hitters. More after the jump.

Star-divide

I'm staying in tonight to watch 2012 Texas commit Connor Brewer on the Worldwide Leader. Chaparral plays at Notre Dame Prep in Scottsdale cross - town battle. Apparently, Scottsdale isn't just a place to exile your old, crazy aunt. They actually play a little bit of football up there.

The NCAA could keep Texas recruits' games off of the LHN, but they couldn't keep their games off the ESPN platform. If you have cable and live in the United States, you can watch Connor Brewer live tonight. It helps to have friends in high places.

Brewer will be looking for redemption after a so - so showing on national television against Bishop Gorman in the season opener. Connor on the season is 74/119 for 1,129 yards, and15 touchdowns.

Again the game is at 7pm on ESPN2. I'll be here to discuss it and break down Brewer's performance.

No Texas High School Football of note are being televised this weekend.

Top Match - Ups per Area and Featured Players

Houston

Friendswood @ # 7 (4A) Pearland Dawson

Undefeated Dawson attempts to keep it rolling against a district rival.

Featured players: 2012 Texas commit Dawson OT Kennedy Estelle, 2013 Texas target Dawson RB James White

Austin

Cedar Park Vista Ridge @ # 8 (4A) Cedar Park

Cedar Park attempts to bounce back from a top loss to Round Rock Westwood.

San Antonio

#21 San Antonio Warren @ San Antonio Stevens (Saturday)

A good 'ole San Antonio shoot out.

DFW

Wylie East @ # 6 (4A) Highland Park

One of the most historic programs in Texas takes on the upstart Wylie East. Both teams are undefeated and looking for respect in District 10 - 4A.

Featured players: 2013 Texas targets Wylie East WR Marcell Ateman and Wylie East WR Quan Jones. Ateman and Jones are lethal combination. Both are about 6'4'' and quick twitch athletes. Both hold offers from Tennessee and Arizona. Ateman is very high on Texas. I think Texas is more interested in Jake Oliver at the moment, but Ateman is one hell of an option to have.

Recruiting Quick Hitters:

* Answered prayer. Texas has sent correspondence to 2012 Pflugerville Hendrickson ATH Daje Johnson. Johnson is absolutely tearing it up during his senior season. Wescott will be at this game. Expect an evaluation to follow. I think Johnson projects better as a DB (his father was a NFL cornerback), but he could be an excellent utility back at Texas. With Daniel Brooks looking less and less likely to flip to Texas, the coaches would be wise to evaluate Johnson's offensive skills.

* 2013 Arlington Heights OT / DT A'Shawn Robinson will be at the Texas - OU game as a guest of the Horns. He was also at the BYU game. Robinson hasn't visited any other schools this Fall. I believe Robinson can be gotten early by Texas. The Longhorns are likely recruiting Robinson as an OT.

* 2013 Celina OT / DE Jake Raulerson is a maybe for the Texas - OU game. He might attend the Florida - LSU game in Baton Rouge instead.

* Bo Davis is staying in contact with 2012 Round Rock DT Glen Antoine. Antoine is having a tremendous senior season. I think Texas is expecting attrition after the season, and Antoine could be offered late in the recruiting process.

* 2012 Tampa Berkeley Prep ATH Nelson Agholor will make an unofficial visit to Florida for the Alabama game this weekend. Agholor is also planning on making an official visit to Notre Dame. No word yet on when he might make an official visit to Texas.

* 2013 Dallas Jesuit J.J. Gustafson has named a top 4 and Texas is in it. Gustafson had an excellent performance during a Texas summer camp in June.

That's all for this weekend. Enjoy all the high school football action tonight, and come here to talk about it.

As always, join me at 5 pm for Sundays with Bill. We'll talk ISU game, recruiting and Big 12 expansion.

Hook 'Em.

Devonte Neal

I wish Texas would take a look at Devonte Neal. The guy is a burner, and projects well as a cornerback at the next level.

I could see him as an APB back.

Bit small for a cornerback at a big-time school.

The evaluations of Connor being a better runner than Case, but not as good a runner as Ash look accurate.

by KingMack on Sep 30, 2011 9:58 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I love Major, but I think most of the Xs and Os are Harsin’s, and the Joes are Applewhite’s. Yes I do think Major has input, but it’s mostly Harsin. Whatever, the mix is it’s working well. Look at Texas’ offensive stats since replacing Gilbert. Very impressive.

... going after the Sugarland Express

BFLT – I think as he blows through district, the eyes will start pointing toward Kenneth Hall. It’s going to take a deep, deep run into the playoffs, but 4000+ year /11,000+ career is not out of the question right now. I hope he holds together in the playoffs (nobody can tackle him in district!).

If they keep Johnathan at about 15-16 carries a game. Go for the record. Simply amazing what he’s doing. Season stat line: 95 carries for 1,440 yards, 15.2 ypc 24 TDs

For a team that might be in the Big 12 soon, they should be playing better at home. Oh well, at least they’re winning.

I think Ford is the best 2013 back I've seen.

Really quick, nice feet, nice balance. Burst and the top end. Good build for a back.

I’m disappointed that Altee Tenpenny got hurt. I liked Tenpenny’s sophomore film better than Ford’s.

It’ll be interesting to see what Texas does at RB for 2013. I think Dontre Wilson is lock for an offer, but he’s a utility back. If the Horns take a feature back, Ford should be their top target in state.

Not quite sure

How I feel about Ford yet. That video is ridiculously sped up. Seems to have really good burst, power, and cutting ability, but he doesn’t have that many long runs. He doesn’t have Gray’s ability to find the endzone once he gets to the second and third level. I mean, nobody does, but that is something that is generally seen in highlight packages for RBs. Hookem having him 2nd in 2013 right now is pretty comical IMO.

Tipsy thinks he has "above average" speed

From sophomore tape. I thought it was “average,” and it’s pretty obvious you can’t go from looking like a 4.55 guy to looking like a high 4.3’s guy in a year. Regardless, he does look a bit faster…it’s just hard to judge how much since he looks like his feet aren’t even touching the ground. I’m a huge fan of his burst upfield though. His cutting ability looks vastly improved as well.

Mixed thoughts on Daje Johnson tonight.

Between the tackles, he just doesn’t project as a running back at the next level at all. Not sure about his vision and he doesn’t have the lower body strength to finish runs considering that he doesn’t run behind his pads. However, when he got into the open field in the second half he was absolutely electric, with one long touchdown run and another that should have been 79 yards, but was called back due to a questionable personal foul call on him right before he reached the end zone. Unless he said something, it wasn’t deserved. Johnson then taunted an Elgin player in the end zone and got tossed. He also scored on a 66-yard punt return for a touchdown.

I could see him being an all-purpose back in college if TCU decides they want to get him the ball in space. Obviously, projecting him as a corner is tough when all you see is him playing running back, but he certainly has the speed. Think he’s worth a look by Texas.

I suppose Akina could ask their coach

if he would put them in DB drills during a practice, but Akina isn’t allowed to do that himself unless it’s at a summer camp.

Question

can anyone find Brewer’s stats for the nite? I cant find it anywhere

"Stability is a factor in teams that win the championship. But if you stabilize on a team that's going to end up short of that, then all you're doing is spinning your wheels in the 45-win range."-----Daryl Morey

Brewer was 13-18 258 yes and 5 TD’s in 2 quarters. Brewer didn’t take a snap in the 2nd half.
