Sundays with Bill, Rice Game Recap Edition

The Rice Game is in the books, but the freshmen are here to stay. 18 true freshman played last night, a Texas record. Good win with plenty of teaching moments. Talking points: The Rice game, Malcolm Brown's performance in the 2nd half, the freshman, Garrett Gilbert's performance, the David Ash packages, the defense , the emergence of Steve Edmond, recruits at the Rice Game: Jake Raulerson, Darius James and Antwuan Davis (?), BYU Game next week, and of course, realignment. Let's get interactive.

Well, I’m real worried about the next two weeks, Do we have a chance in either of these?

by BEW on Sep 4, 2011 5:01 PM CDT reply actions

I’m concerned about BYU. That being said, BYU didn’t play well against Ole Miss. I believe it will be a low scoring, close game throughout. Can Texas gut it out? I hope they can.

Texas should beat UCLA. If U of H can beat UCLA, Texas should be able to also. If Texas can stop the run, that’s a big if, UCLA is in real trouble against Texas. I’m not impressed with UCLA.

I was at the Ole Miss-BYU game yesterday

BYU looks decent. Ole Miss lost 2 running backs (one came back but was gone for a while) and dropped a TD in the endzone. Ole Miss had plenty of chances to take the game but couldn’t put it down. They ran a really one sided offense, Nutt changed quarterbacks and it got a little better, but Nutt called a ridiculous game. BYU looked like they played fairly vanilla, took Ole Miss to task with RB flares, but I don’t believe they completed 50% of their passes. Former UT recruit Ross Apo looked good making some nice catches. They ran the ball fairly well on Ole Miss, but this isn’t a great Ole Miss front 7. Ole Miss’s TD came on an INT for 6. BYU is beatable and UCLA seems beatable as well. We should be fine next week if we don’t turn the ball over. Especially with HarsinWhite’s smoke and mirrors ability to manufacture some points (see Gilbert to Fozzy to Harris to Shipley). Not overly concerned about BYU even though their D played really sound. I was impressed with how well they traveled and how loud they were. Classy too. Boring game though being a secondary Ole Miss fan.

Two things will never change...Jesus loves us and UT is awesome.

Wildhorn

Who do you prefer running the wild horn? I can’t remember who all ran from the “qb” formation last night, but I seen to remember fozzy looking good in it.

Shout out to jellocat.

by Longhorn11 on Sep 4, 2011 5:02 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

I believe Shipley also handled the ball in the Wild Horn. Stroke of Harsin genus.

I believe Texas will use multiple looks out of that formation. Hell, John Harris had a touchdown pass last night. This offense will be crazy.

What would it take for GG to be pulled? would Ash or Mccoy come in after that?

by Bryan Chao on Sep 4, 2011 5:07 PM CDT reply actions

I think it would take multiple bad weeks of practice, and several bad turnovers during a game for Gilbert to replaced. Gilbert was unspectacular last night, but he was effective at times. I think he bought himself a couple more weeks last night.

Bad handoff caused a fumble on his first play. Weak, terrible pass on his first throw. Handed it off the rest of the time.

DT Recruits

Do any of the 2012 or 2013 DT recruits eat raw meat and kick the neighborhood bully down the street? I know the OL recruiting is big for the next couple of years, but we could use some bone breakers in the DL.

by Old Horn on Sep 4, 2011 5:09 PM CDT reply actions

Malcom Brown should play immediately next season. Desmond Jackson will have a year in a college weight room. I think Alex Norman and Paul Boyette will play. Hopefully Bible will be ready to go next year. Daniels should be heavy enough to be a big time DT.

As far as the 2013 guys, Justin Manning is the class. Isiah Golden can plan, but will need a few years in the weight room.

GG

How much autonomy do you think Harsinwhite has versus Mack in terms of deciding how many snaps Gilbert gets (or even starts)? I still get the feeling that MB decides everything when it comes to the personnel on offense.

Also, I was at the UofH/UCLA game, and I was way more impressed with UCLA’s passing game than their running attack. UCLA has 2 great receivers. Considering that our secondary wasn’t tested by Rice, how do you think our secondary will play against BYU and UCLA?

by UTinHou on Sep 4, 2011 5:15 PM CDT reply actions

The fact that David Ash was used in packages last night tells me all I need to know. It’s Harsin’s offense all the way. Mack is allegedly delegating more.

I like what I saw from the secondary last night. Vaccaro played out of his mind. Byndom. Phillips, and Diggs all played well. Jake Heaps and BYU will be a real test.

I’m not concerned with UCLA, but Texas should certainly prepare well for the game.

Bill any thoughts on the o line?

I was at the game and no LHN to record it so I didn’t get great looks (I focused more on backfield) but what I did see was a lack of running lanes all around but the tackles seemed to hold their own in pass protect for the most part…your thoughts?

by TowerPower on Sep 4, 2011 5:23 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Espinosa and Walters had very good games. Tackles were steady. The OL played better as the game went on. I think they really like blocking for Malcolm.

Seems like he had limited action, but it was clear he is ELITE. Do you think we were just saving him for more time later so that folks don’t get too much of a look at what they will be getting. Love to see him break out against OU.

by Wrangler86 on Sep 4, 2011 5:24 PM CDT reply actions

Good question. I’m not sure what the right mix is right now. Fozzy runnings sweeps and pitches opened things up later for Malcolm Brown. Brown is Texas’ closer. As long as Fozzy is doing what Harsin what expects from him he’ll continue to play. Fozzy gives Texas a different look at running back. Brown and Bergeron are similar, Brown of course being the better back.

OU-Pac 12- Texas options

So, any chance at all that A&M gets hit with legislative brakes on SEC if it means OU goes to Pac 12 and Baylor is odd man out with the heoine Ann Richards to save them?

Pac 12 has a Noah’s ark type stand with Oregon/Oregon St—would have OU-Okie Lite. Is Texas Tech really our “mate”?

Do we want the Pac 12 if we keep LHN as out Regional Network?

Texas still seems best suited for the Big 10…..Wouldn’t that be a good match academically and it would be fun to CHAP the asses of the cornhuskers. Mizzou and Texas maybe?

A&M: Ready,Set, Go.....

by Wrangler86 on Sep 4, 2011 5:28 PM CDT reply actions

Aggie is gone. I think we’ll see some lawsuits, but TAMU will leave.

Texas has given or promised something to Baylor in exchange for not raising hell about Aggie leaving. Texas likely agreed to play Baylor in OOC games in the future.

I value the LHN more than Texas’ conference. It will revolutionize how fans follow the Longhorns. The coverage and dollars are worth the headaches. I agree with the Barking Carnival guys that the LHN will be worth much more than $300 million dollars. Once the LHN pays back the $295 million, Texas will start raking it in.

I’d prefer to keep Tech off a Texas network. Everything is negotiable, including the LHN and the Pac 12.

I prefer the Big Ten over the Pac 12, but OU doesn’t. OU needs a media partner for their network and California recruiting pipelines. I’d love to hear what the Big Ten is offering Texas and OU.

The Big Ten has more tradition and a better fan base.

A Big Ten move would include?

OU and UT?
OU, OSU, UT, Missouri?
what combination of teams? And, how would the Divisions be split? I would assume we get “the Cobs” in our Division.

Not sure Big Ten would be helpful to our softball and baseball programs.

by Old Horn on Sep 4, 2011 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions

The biggest obstacle in going to the Big Ten is OSU and Tech’s poor academic standings. If U of H can get to Tier 1 status, Tech has no excuse for not also doing so.

Big Ten said last summer they wouldn’t take Tech. I don’t think that’s changed.

I believe the Big Ten will also hold a spot for Notre Dame. I don’t see them going to 16. Delany is probably shooting for Texas and OU and 14 teams.

I think we’d probably see North and South division, with Texas of course in the South.

Big Ten move would hurt baseball. I really feel sorry Augie and his team. Baseball program is just now profitable, in a great baseball conference and it could all end.

There was a lot of one back sets. I assume Harsin felt he could take advantage of something in one back sets better than 2 backs. Fozzy had a little trouble getting started, he might need a lead blocker. Cody did a good job blocking when he played FB.

Malcolm not playing until the 3rd quarter was mildly surprising. Bergeron played a lot in first half. Jaxon in the Wild Horn was down right shocking, as was John Harris’ touchdown pass.

Bergeron/Brown

Do you think Harsin wants to use Bergeron and Brown as effectively the same player, one per half? Rather than start the superstar freshman, let Bergeron soften up the defense, which he seems quite capable of doing. Then, once D is tired in the second half, let a fresh Brown run at will. Or do you expect Brown’s performance last night to move him into the first half vs. BYU?

Maybe this belongs in a separate thread. A bit long. Thoughts on UT's future

Seems to me what DeLoss Dodds — or the people he answers to — would like to do is create a quasi-independent Texas for football while retaining conference affiliation for the other sports.

The football schedule might like this:

1. Every-year opponents. Tech, OU, Baylor, Oklahoma State, maybe Missouri. Baylor included because that seems to be part of the arrangement for Baylor not taking legal/financial action against the Aggies for leaving the Big 12.

2. Typical non-conference opponents. Could be 3-5 games; opponents like Rice, C. Florida, UTEP, Wyoming, N. Texas, La.-Lafayette. Most or all at home. Money games. LHN games.

3. Intersectional opponents. Teams like Georgia Tech, Arizona State, Purdue, Boston College, Kentucky, Maryland. Mostly home-and-home series, providing an opportunity for the Longhorns to play (occasionally) in places like N. England, D.C., Atlanta, Phoenix-Tempe, the Chicago area. Expand the school’s footprint, fan base, make recruiting inroads. Avoid playing killers like Penn State, USC, Alabama.

Notre Dame as part of the first group, maybe, or at least the third group. BYU? Unknown.

Thoughts?

by edsp on Sep 4, 2011 5:41 PM CDT reply actions

DeLoss allegedly prefers a conference. Texas could have gone independent last year and they chose to come back to the Big 12.

OU leaving would clear the way for Texas to follow.

I've read that about DeLoss

And he’s got to say it. Who will align with Texas if he says, “We’re with you now, but we’re planning on becoming an independent?”

I’d prefer we stay in a conference. But I think UT in a conference of relatively like-minded schools with the kind of financial clout we possess is near impossible. There aren’t many schools like that, and those that are similar tend to be on the coasts or way north. And are long-term members of well-established conferences.

by edsp on Sep 4, 2011 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

In DeLoss Dodds I trust

Texas will come out fine, but I would like to see the other Texas schools do well also.

Assuming that OU/OSU/Texas and Tech leave the Big XII and that it doesn’t just toss in the towel, it would be cool if SMU/UH/Baylor/Rice and say Iowa State, Kansas, K-State, and others stuck together for a more regional area than Conference USA

A&M: Ready,Set, Go.....

In both a good and bad way. 18 freshmen playing? There are going to be some really rough patches and some really awesome moments. The future is extremely bright though.

Speaking of 2013

From what I’ve read about how many of the players seem to like/be open to Texas in combination with the depth of the class, I would not be surprised if our 2013 recruiting class was the best Mack has had since he got here top to bottom. It’s not the most top-heavy in-state class, but the depth appears to be fantastic already.

Obviously, this is barring some odd DGB/Peat/Agholor combo of commitments.

I think Texas, Aggie, OU and Tech will get theirs in 2013. The depth is there for all 4 to have excellent class. The Texas coaching staff will hopefully get most of the evaluations right.

LBs

How would you rate the LBs last night?

by b&g80 on Sep 4, 2011 6:08 PM CDT reply actions

I have serious concerns about Robinson in the run game. He has issues when a run comes directly at him. Most improve. It’s nice that he’s so capable in pass coverage, but that alone won’t get it done.

Hick was very, very solid. He was around the ball a lot.

I think Edmond will become a starter at MLB this year if he can improve in pass coverage. Robinson probably goes to the bench if that scenario happens. Why couldn’t Robinson occupy the Cobbs role?

Robinson isn't much of a blitzer

Although I agree that he’s not the answer at MLB. Acho and Hicks are both better pluggers, and last night just seemed like very little was happening from that spot. I give them another shot in the BYU game, but if we’re getting shredded at the half, it’s time to make a change.

Where was the QB pressure

from our stud defensive ends? I’m happy with keeping Rice out of the end zone, however, it was perplexing to me that we did not get much pressure from our defensive ends. I’m also worried about the middle of this defense, too many big runs given up in the middle gave me flashbacks to last year.

Rice OL was better than advertised, and had a good scheme against Okafor and Jeffcoat. Jeffcoat had a better game, Okafor might have just had a bad game. I would have also liked to see more pressure against Rice.

Diaz hit the nail on the head when he said after the game that you have to stop the run before you can attack. If we don’t slow people then Okafor and the boys can’t pin their ears back. The LB play is very troubling.

Overall, I have to say I liked

what I saw from our offense. I know there will be ups and downs, but from you can see the talent from the young guys like Dominic Espinoza, Malcolm Brown and Jaxson Shipley. Heck, even Monroe looked like a new player as we finally have a coordinator who knows how to use him as a real offensive threat.

On the under hand, I was somewhat disappointed in what I saw from the defense. I have confidence that Manny Diaz will get things corrected, however, my expectation going into the season was that the strength of this team (if any) would have to be on the defensive side of the ball.

Given the youth and inconsistent QB play, I can’t imagine us winning any shootouts with the elite level teams (OU, OSU and A&M). We need the defense to play to their potential going forward.

by texlaker on Sep 4, 2011 6:37 PM CDT reply actions

DJ was very close to breaking a couple very long runs. Must improve his moves to make that one defender miss. Overall, Rice did a great job in open field tackling.

Defense was more bend not break that dominant. Texas has to get better against the run to open up more exotic blitz packages.

I agree. I don’t like Texas’ chances playing from behind. The Horns must start off strong in the aforementioned games.

I am little worried about wr. Davis seems to have poor hands, as he had seveal drops. He seems to catch with his body not his hands. Looked great in space but just doesn’t look like a natural pass catcher.Jaxson is only guy that made a play (on the reverse pass), but hard to ask a true frosh to be the security blanket. Am I over-reacting by saying I see another mediocre wr corp at best this year?

by codaxx on Sep 4, 2011 6:44 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

I’m more concerned with Gilbert’s ball placement and touch. He threw at the WRs’ feet, a lot. Wyatt will the address the drops. WR corps won’t be medicore. Mike Davis had a huge game, so did Jaxon.

He was great on the deep ball. Gets nice separation. I thought I counted 3-4 drops from davis. Belive on 3rd down that led to the first FG. Another 3rd down were he let ball bounce of shoulder pads. Granted I was in stands with kids so focus is tough. Just plays you cany have from your #1

He will be great and eventually our best wr. Just see plays that should go for 12-15 if qb and wr executes correctly. Qb doesn’t and wr exacerbates it by dropping a catchable ball and what should be a minmum of 7 yds turns into 0

by calihorn on Sep 4, 2011 6:51 PM CDT up reply actions

That offense we saw last night was vanilla,

at least in comparison to what we’ve seen the last few years. Now, if you tell me that the defense was vanilla, that would be a reassuring thought actually.

I agree, the entire playbook on both sides of the ball has to be open for BYU and UCLA. This is still a 8 to 9 win team at best. We need to get to 3-0 entering the OU and OSU stretch. With so many young guys playing pivotal roles and a QB with shaky confidence, the best thing for us now is to rack up WINS.

I don’t think that kind of information has been released to the public yet. Stoops would definitely want that, and with 4 teams in California, it’s possible. I hope Texas would get a similar deal.

by codaxx on Sep 4, 2011 8:27 PM CDT reply actions

Basically, Texas will have to be spot on with their evaluations of Houston, East Texas and Golden Triangle recruits. There will be so much competition in those areas that Texas can’t afford to miss.

Texas will also have to be more aggressive earlier. The standard recruit response “Well I like Texas, but I haven’t heard from them yet,” will not fly in East Texas. I’m not saying Texas should offer sophomores, but they need to make it abundantly clear that they are interested in the recruit, and they intend to offer him as junior. Then follow that up with regular contact.

Texas is lucky in that the Metroplex has surpassed Houston in quality and quantity of recruits. Texas should continue to own the Metroplex if the program is successful. I don’t see the SEC powers as big time players in the Metroplex.

as we have seen in the past, exceptionally early recruiting can be a double edged sword when some kids are hitting their peak at age 17. Also wonder about the long-term prospects of Metroplex vs Houston vs other areas, as I tend to think HS football is very cyclical.

Sorry for double posting

I’m just excited as a longtime reader to finally have something to add to the board fwiw:

I was at the Ole Miss-BYU game yesterday

BYU looks decent, but it was Ole Miss and noone around here is expecting anything. Just getting to a bowl this year would be a blessing. Ole Miss lost 2 running backs (one came back but was gone for a while) and a reciever dropped a TD in the endzone. Ole Miss had chances to take the game but couldn’t put it down.

Two things will never change...Jesus loves us and UT is awesome.

by fotwzyhorn on Sep 4, 2011 9:02 PM CDT reply actions

Excellent perspective. Hopefully, BYU and UCLA are winnable games against bowl teams.

If Texas can defend the run and manufacture points, we should be fine against BYU and UCLA. I expect BYU will play better against Texas. That being said, it’s tough going on the road for the first 2 games.

Thanks for the chat. Online is the only way I can get my Longhorn fix around here.

I think they’ll play better too. It seems that most teams at the beginning of the season are trying to get down their bread and butter before opening it up over the next couple weeks. A lot of the same plays for the majority of the game. I think I goofed though. I didn’t find the online link to the game until late. Was it actually Ash to Fozzy to Harris to Shipley?

Will the SEC wait until after the season to invite the aggies?

Is it weird that the invitation hasn’t been extended? Is it “in the mail.”

Application and acceptance should go down this coming week.

Not an insider perspective, but

over here in SEC land the talk is VA Tech. Sounds like a good poach to me. That would get the DC market would it not?

I think the SEC will take Aggie first and then work on the 14th team.

BYU and UCLA

I have no idea why anyone thinks these teams will be much of a challenge. BYU is getting way too much hype (or is that Heap?) and UCLA is a team we should simple beat, but who knows. I wonder how the crowd and the heat will affect the Momos.

GG and CS

Surely Gilbert is better than Ash or McCoy, I mean he was High School Player of the year!, he has a cannon is big and has bloodlines I know he is because what program would risk everthing on him if he were not? Surely a program would not start Major over Chris, Major has no athletic ability (other than icewater blood and hatred for losing). Gilbert is so good that I would lose 7 games and destroy the team in order to prove it. Same for Gideon, he will knock your jock off ,,after you catch a 20 yard slugo route. GILBERT IS NERVOUS, PERIOD, he did not make the step. McCoy, like his brother lives for this stuff, he’s loose. The guy who mentioned Acho isdead on, both Achos were WAY overated, good guys though.

Breakout Freshman?

Do you think JS or MB are break-out players that get the stats and national attention similar to Lattimore or Blackmon in their freshman years?

I’d be pretty surprised in Jaxon was the leading receiver this year, but it could happen.

I think Malcolm Brown will lead Texas in rushing.

This may be late, but.....

I was looking over some numbers from last nights game and compared them with last season.

277 Passing Yards – More than any other game last season

229 Rush Yards – Only surpassed once last season, Florida Atlantic: 259 Rush Yards

506 Total Yards – Again, only one game had more yards last season, Florida Atlantic: 522 Yds

22 First Downs – Only beat that 4 times last season, Iowa St., Baylor, K-State and Florida Atl.

Granted it’s only the first game of the season but the fact that they’ve already shown better numbers than any other game the whole of 2010…..I’m pretty excited about it. Should I be?!?

And that’s AFTER a very slow first half….

Traylon Shead?

What’s going on with Traylon Shead? Have not heard him mentioned amongst the young stable of RB’s.

Malcolm brown

Why do you suppose it took so long for MB to get into the game & why is bergeron playing before him?

by jtdoes on Sep 4, 2011 10:53 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

Good question. The only thing I can think of is Bergeron had more practice time because of Brown’s injury early in camp.

Yeah it’s Brown OR Bergeron on the depth chart. The Texas coaches love using OR.

The word still....

around the 40 that Peterson is a good bet to replace Mack when he retires?

by Pounds on Sep 4, 2011 10:56 PM CDT reply actions

I think Petersen and Urban Meyer will be prominently mentioned when Mack retires.
