Wide Receiver Marquise Goodwin to Rejoin Team
In a statement by the Texas Sports Information Department, Texas Longhorn standout wide receiver and track star Marquise Goodwin has announced a return to the football team.
"When Marquise talked to me and our coaches about coming back and playing this year we were 100 percent in support if that was what he wanted to do," Brown said. "He had decided earlier to redshirt and focus on track and field, and we backed himthen just as we are now. He’s a tremendous young man who is blessed with a lot of ability in both football and track and field. Marquise has had great success in both sports and will continue to, but at the end of the day, what I heard from him was that he really missed football and wanted to play this year. We want what’s best for him and know he’s in great shape, is a fast learner and can help us, so we’re glad to have him back."
"I really appreciate coach Brown, (men's track and field head) coach (Bubba) Thornton and all of my coaches for being so supportive of me through all of this," Goodwin said. "They stood behind me when I decided to redshirt and couldn’t have been more understanding and agreeable when I wanted to come back. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that you have those kinds of people — my family here at UT — believing in and standing behind you."
Goodwin is expected to add a lot of experience to the youthful wide receiver corps as well as special teams.

We are going to have a lot of speed on the field
Shipley and Goodwin together is scary. Add Mike Davis to that group and it’s not fair. Now, let’s just hope the O-Line can give Gilbert enough time to get them the ball.

O Line
IMO, they’re already as good if not better than they were. First games for the most part are anomalies. Given time, I think they’ll show considerable improvement.

It's just a realistic decision
Last week, Goodwin competed at the World Track & Field Championships in Korea. He entered the meet having previously won the long jump at the US Track & Field Championship with a jump of about 27’4". That made him look like a shoo-in to do well in the WTFC and then rep the USA at the Olympics in 2012.
Long jumpers have to qualify for the finals. Goodwin jumped about a foot less than at the US meet, and failed to qualify for the finals. He came close, but didn’t make it. So I’m guessing that seriously diminishes his chances to go to the Olympics, and makes returning to football more attractive.
Had he won or at least medaled, we would not have seen him back at Texas this year.
Not making the cut at Worlds wouldn't really affect his chances at the US Olympic Trials
The Trials are really the only thing he’d need to win to qualify to go to the Olympics.
QB Garrett Gilbert was the Beavis & Butthead episode of the 2010 college football season. Even when things were going well there was always one bad decision that meant he wasn’t going to score.

I'm glad John Harris will have another target to throw to.

That's an interesting question.
If they use him all over the field, that is indeed a spooky situation for opposing DCs and makes it damn hard to protect slower, mismatched DBs with players shifting from here to Lubbock.
It's important to remember
that while Marquis is in track shape, that is no where near the same as football shape. It is yet to be seen how they will utilize him this season. Heck, he may not even know the playbook since he did not participate in spring camp. This is a tough up hill climb coming for him.

This is how I feel as well
Honestly, I’m not sure where the playing time comes from…but then again it could be worse next year as all of the young pups have a year of seasoning to add to what looks to be immense talent.
Regardless, welcome back Marquise.
You're right. Track shape is a lot more specialized than football shape.
It focuses on performing one thing at a higher level than any one aspect of football would ever command of him, but that does not prepare one to play football. With a new scheme, I think the best use of Goodwin would have to be to just incorporate him in a very limited sub-set of the playbook for now, and let him catch up on the rest as best he can. It’s going to take this entire team longer than one year to develop a good command of the system, and the rest all have significantly more time in the scheme than Goodwin does. I’d just find a base set of plays that would make his talent particularly dangerous, and very gradually add to it as they go.

Colin Blake
I know this is off-topic from Marquise Goodwin, who im glad is back on the team, but whats our next move on the DB’s now that Colin Blake is off the board?
I think the Texas staff might view Colin Blake as a safety all the way at the next level. There’s been some talk that Blake is a bit too rigid to play corner. Texas is likely looking for a hybrid safety / corner in this class. I have no idea where that hybrid safety / corner is going to come from. Texas could be looking for late bloomers, or going back to evaluate recruits they passed on earlier in the evaluation process.
I think Corey Coleman will receive a Texas offer in the next few weeks. I’d circle Week 4 as the deadline for when more DB offers might be coming out.
I honestly didn’t like Texas slow playing Colin Blake either. We have to trust Akina’s evaluations, he’s earned it.

sanders and collins are both fits...
for what you’re talking about. just sayin
Goodwin always said
That he was a football player that ran track, not a track guy trying to play football. Glad he is back, and hope that he is still able to pursue his olympic dreams.
A&M: Ready,Set, Go.....
What playbook?
You tell him, “Marquise, line up wide right, jet down the sideline and look over your shoulder at about the 10…you’ll already be about 10 steps past the defender…just haul in the ball, score the touchdown, and flip the ball to the ref. Oh, and when the other team kicks off to start the 2nd half, take in on the goalline and don’t stop running ’til you reach the other one.” That’s all the coaching MG needs…you can’t coach speed anyway.
Exactly what I was thinking. Just tell him to run, catch, score. Easy.
If a man is alone in the woods and he speaks, if no one hears him,,is he still wrong?
theres a lot to learn in the playbook.
But he’s a smart kid. I think he shows up for OU.
I'm more than optimistic. I'm totally thrilled.
I’ve always felt that Marquis has the chance to be a truly electrifying player. When word emerged that he was redshirting this year, I was more bummed than most, judging by the buzz around the blogosphere (and there was definitely some bummin’ going on).
His return is GREAT news. I can’t wait to see what Harsinwhite has in store for this phenomenal athlete. I think he’s going to be directly responsible for another two or three touchdowns this year on top of what the offense would score otherwise. He could be that good.
If he can get up to speed with the playbook, Goodwin will be the difference in at least one game over the course of the season.

Speed kills
We have some serious speed now at WR and we all can agree that greg davis never, just like dj monroe, properly used goodwin’s speed. Harsinwhite will simplify the playbook for Goodwin to get him on the field sooner than later or at the very least he will be a great decoy
Our vertical game really plays well to GG’s strengths so Goodwin just gives us another burner to stretch the field. Of course having a good running game will allow this but with our trio of back, it looks promising

Best news I've heard in a while.
I just wonder how long it will take him to get back into the swing of things. He has a whole offense to learn and he’s got to get in the weight room with Bennie Wylie. No way does he make it onto the field by this weekend. Next weekend, perhaps, is doable maybe. He’ll probably have to come back into the offense more slowly. Maybe Harsinwhite can create a special package of plays for him.
I like that he missed football that much; it shows he really cares about the sport. I like guys who have a deep love for the game.
"Hey, don't y'all think that's beautiful right there? That crystal is SO beautiful. And it's coming home to Texas." - Vince Young
I don't think his adjustment
will be as difficult as pegged. He has experience, is a smart kid, and really won’t have to learn a lot besides what HE has to do.
kickoff
Monroe and Goodwin is a pretty nice KO return option. I didn’t mind Diggs and Shipley out there for KO but I think Monroe and Goodwin can make some electric plays when they have some open space.
I’m sure he’ll be put in some special packages for WR but getting solid field position will be huge in the OU game.
A faster (much) Titus Young
Some one on another board said Mike Davis reminds them of Titus Young of BSU. Actually, he reminds me of the other wide they had last year. Goodwin reminds me of Titus Young with more speed burst but not as much polish. One things for sure, Harsinwhite will find a way to terrorize opposing D’s using MG’s speed. Davis and Shipley have good speed, Goodwin has another gear altogether.
sans Playbook
In the X’s and O’s wasteland, I say let “Rocket Arm” Gilbert launch a 70 yarder that Goodwin will be the only player on the field fast enough to catch up with.
In other words, “Go Long!”
Oakland Raider vertical offense.
Just Win, Baby!
