Sundays With Bill, Bowl Win Edition
Texas took a big step forward on Wednesday. Hey a bowl win is well, a bowl win. I'll have my thoughts on the Holiday Bowl.
Talking points:
* Looking forward to Spring Ball and the 2012 season.
* Recruiting tidbits galore: Mario Edwards narrows his list, and Texas is one of the leaders. DGB returns to State of Texas for the Army All American Bowl and Tim Cole is waiting. Arik Armstead's interesting wardrobe selection. The Texas Ten arrive in Florida for the Under Armour All American Game. Thomas Johnson plans a visit.
* J.T. Barrett vs. Tyrone Swoopes. Let's debate their merits Citizens.
I'm here and ready to go.

Holiday Bowl Thoughts
- Texas has some bad mamba jambas on defense. Joey Harrington said before the game that they were in the conversation as Alabama and LSU’s defenses. While I disagree, I think Texas can get there next year. With all the youth on defense they had some inconsistent games this year, namely Baylor and OU.
- Replacing Acho and Robinson is going to be tough. Steve Edmond is extremely talented and played well this year, but I would have liked to see him play more this season. He will be counted on as the starting MLB next year. I feel pretty good about Cobbs replacing Acho. Different kind of players, but I think Cobbs has the heart and athleticism is be very successful. There is also some good talent behind him at OLB. Just a gut feeling, but I think Tevin Jackson spells Edmond at MLB next season.
- Jordan Hicks was finally healthy last night and it showed. He should lead the LB corps next year. His final 2 seasons at Texas should spectacular if he stays out of the trainers’ room. Cobbs and Hicks coming off the edge is frightening.
- Texas has 2 All American DEs next season. Okafor already got his, and Jackson should be a preseason All American. If Mario Edwards is wondering what his development might at Texas might look like, look no further than Oak and Jackson. If Texas can get anything out of Ced Reed and Reggie Wilson next year, watch out. I think there’s a window for Edwards to get into the DE rotation right away.
- The secondary was again awesome. Imagine a junior Byndom, sophomore Diggs, junior Phillips and senior Vaccaro starting next year with M. Thompson, Josh Turner, Evans and Scott rotating in. Salty. I think Echols plays next year. He won’t make mistakes and is technically sound. Duke Thomas is said to balling at corner on the all star game circuit. Replacing Gideon with Phillips makes this secondary instantly better, getting Vaccaro back makes it sick.
- The DT rotation should be filthy. Even the forgotten man, Calvin Howell had a big game against. I think Moore starts because of his size, but Texas could go 8 deep at DT next year. I expect Malcom Brown to be a regular by the end of the season. Whaley is a killer. So disruptive, always makes something happen on 3rd down. Mack got a playmaker, just not where he expected.
- I have some concerns about the OL. They couldn’t create a new LOS. There were some nice runs at the end of the game, but the push wasn’t there. It starts with Dom Espinosa. Searels has some decisions to make with the addition of Donald Hawkins. With Hopkins moving back inside, as we all assume he will, I think he should get an audition at center. Mack and Stacy have both said publicly that Hopkins can play all 5 positions. Espinosa just isn’t getting it done. Hopkins could play center and Flower, who had a great 13 practices before the bowl, could excel at LG. Cochran at LT, Hawkins at RT, Hopkins at C, Walters at RG, and Flowers at LG is my best 5 going into the spring.
- I think Darius James is a 4 year starter at Texas. A center with elite athleticism and NFL upside. When was the last time Texas had that? Quietly the most important recruit in the 2013 class. Texas can build around him.
*I would liked to seen more Bergeron, but I think it was a flow of the game kind of decision. Malcolm had some runs when he got a crease. Both should buckle it up next year because Johnathan Gray is coming for their carries. Best RB rotation Texas has had in a long time.
- I was encouraged with what I saw out of Ash. The long TD pass to Goodwin is something Texas can point to with DGB. Texas isn’t Arkansas, but their QB is getting better. Ash sleeps, eats, and breathes football and Jesus. Give him the starter’s reps in the spring, summer and fall camp and I think he’ll progress and improve. The jump passes / passes off his back foot are maddening, but he didn’t throw 1 pass in 23 attempts that could have been easily picked off. Harsin really needs to work with him on getting his feet and shoulders behind throws. The long pass to Goodwin shows what kind of arm he has.
- I know Goodwin has Olympic aspirations, but I wish he’d give football a chance year round. Wow he had some flashes last night. The long run that set up the TD, and the long TD catch. The guy has another gear. Two excellent games in a row. I think he’s Texas home run threat right now.
- I thought about Kendall Sanders immediately after the Goodwin run. He should be lethal on jet sweeps and reverses. He doesn’t have the speed that Goodwin has, but he has a lot more shake.
- Jaxon Shipley has the most amazing stat line I have ever seen. 4 completions. 4 attempts. 3 TDs and a game clincher. Incredible. Should only get better next year. I’d remind everyone that this will be his first full off season with Bennie.
- DJ Grant was moving really well last night. He should only get healthier this off season. I still don’t like his blocking acumen, but he can stretch the field.
*A good send off for Irby. He probably score if it’s a better throw. 3 TDs and setting up a TD in his final 4 games is pretty darn good. Have a great life after football Blaine.
I think the defensive coaches should take the game film, unedited, and send it to their defensive targets. Edwards has to like what he saw. Texas has 2 upperclassmen All Americans at DE. What does FSU have at the position?
The 2013 recruits have to like what they saw from Manny Diaz’s defense. Once Manny gets his roots down and forms relationships with Texas high school coaches, I think he’ll become the defensive pied piper.
I think Texas needed a good game from Ash to sell to DGB. With Dorial, it’s about more than the football side of things, but if he thinks Ash is competent that could go a long way. Texas has the advantage over Arkansas in everything except for distance and QB play. Maybe they closed the gap a little on the latter.
Bowl wins are obviously about momentum going into the next season. Texas got that, plus a defensive highlight reel to show to recruits.
I think this team can win the Big 12 next year. I have a feeling OU will be down, regardless of what Landry Jones does. RGIII needs to go pro, and the conference is wide open.

DGB
Has DGB said anything since the Holiday bowl?
He'll be interviewed at the Army AA Game
Mario Edwards said that he liked seeing Texas finish strong.
Hopefully the Beckhams saw some promise in Ash.

Sooner Scoop is as bad as Gig Em 247
The reporting usually borders on homerism rather than objectivity.
The Sooner boards needed some news other than Mario Edwards.

Maybe DGB is influencing Neal...LOL
OU has inexplicably imploded this year. The major defections of talented kids and the reports that no end is in sight is not a selling point to recruits. We were worried about Darius White’s comments, sounds like he should have been at OU all along. Even Cory Nelson is concerned about it and expects more transfers. Here’s his take:
We're Texas, We're not OK.
OU's implosion is not inexplicable
There’s a perfectly good explanation for OU imploding.
OU sucks. A lot.
Um . . .
Sooner Scoop is as bad as Gig Em 247

This statement isn’t even remotely close to accurate and considering UT fluffer sites like Orangebloods and Recruitocosm that literally exist for no other reason than to blatantly pander horse bleep to UT fans (who inexplicably eat it up with a spoon and ask for a second helping) makes this statement borderline retarded.
Maybe DGB will flip him to UT?
I heard there is a lot of that going on at ou.
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
Kent Perkins
Could be the top junior in the state. He narrowed his list down to 2. Texas and TAMU. I really like Texas’ chances. Perkins has been a Texas fan for a long time, and Texas has kept tabs on him for years. Perkins has visited both schools, so he could make a decision early. It would be HUGE for Texas to get Perkins early.

Your predictions?
Who steps into Snow’s place on the O-line?
By OU, who are the starting receivers in three-wide sets?
Assuming Machete sticks around (fingers crossed), who starts at the other safety spot?
And, who’s our kicker?
Simplicity is always the secret, to a profound truth, to doing things, to writing, to painting. Life is profound in its simplicity. - Charles Bukowski
Predictions
I think Flowers or Hopkins will step up at LG. Flowers performed very well in the bowl practices.
Not sure about the 3 WR sets, but I think Shipley and 2 freshman will be our best WRs if Mike Davis doesn’t progress.
Adrian Phillips should be the other starting safety. Should be a lot of competition at the position.
I think Nick Jordan will handle the place kicking duties. Russ should punt. Pruitt / Jordan will probably kick off. Tips has said a few things about a punter that Applewhite wants to bring in as a preferred walk on.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 1, 2012 5:23 PM CST up reply actions
Harris will definitely be in the mix
Excellent blocker.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 1, 2012 5:24 PM CST up reply actions
I have no confidence in Russ
But we’ll be OK at KOs and punts. There are ways to compensate for some leg weakness in those areas (coverage, high but short kicks that limit return potential).
Going with a completely unproven FG kicker makes me squirm, especially given that we’re a lot more likely to win tough games 20-17 than 41-30.
Receiver concerns me more than any other positional area. Too much youth, too much uncertainty. Another year with Stacy S and the number of available options give me confidence we’ll field five capable O-linemen. And those starters better hustle and improve, or there’s actually a talented backup to move in.
Yeah Russ really hasn’t panned out so far. He was supposed to be a place kicker, then a kick off specialist and now he’s a punter. What’s next? As I said, Applewhite might bring in a preferred walk on to punt.
Nick Jordan is young, but he’s supposed to be nails.
I think Texas will be fine at WR. Wyatt is bringing in his guys, and the unproductive players have left.

Full 2012 Schedule
Bill,
Happy New Year to you and thanks for this great feature every Sunday. Any idea when the revised 2012 schedule will be released? On MBTF, it still lists games against Mizzou and Texas A&M.
by Horns Up in St Louis on Jan 1, 2012 5:17 PM CST reply actions
2012 Schedule
Nothing will be final as long as WVU is tied up. We already know a few things. TCU at home is likely the Thanksgiving opponent in 2012. WVU could possibly slide in the Mizzou slot.
Yeah they really need to update the schedule on MBTF. Come on Bill Little, you’re better than that.

Thomas Johnson

Thomas Johnson
Johnson told Hook Em 247 that he has a visit to Oregon planned on the 20th. Johnson is still committed to Texas and communicating with the coaches. Should Johnson make the Oregon visit, and enjoys himself, I’ll get concerned.

Your opinion on Case McCoy
And if he leaves, are we likely/unlikely to bring an upperclassman at QB?
QBs
Should Case transfer, I think Texas will take 2 QBs in 2013 and give Ash the keys. I like the graduate QB option, he’s only on scholarship for a year.

Graduate QBs
There are some options out there, but Texas needs to make a move soon. Off the top of my head Karam, Katz and Savage come to mind.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 1, 2012 5:47 PM CST up reply actions
What if Case graduated in three years
(plus summers)?
He’d be eligible to transfer and start at the D1 program of his choice with his fourth season. AND, he’d have the UT sheepskin.
I haven't heard that Case is close to graduating
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 1, 2012 5:58 PM CST up reply actions
if anything, Case transfers. The sooner the better so the coaches know whats going on. I dont think the “maybe” coming from his “camp” all year.

Case has had a few interesting tweets lately...
Many sound like he’s transferring, but at the same time he keeps talking about nexy year and UT pride…
"We are who we are. People say what they say. The outcome is the outcome. We are proud of ourselves." -DeLoss Dodds 9/21/2011
He doesn't need to be close at this point
He’s had three long semesters. He could get in three more, this spring and all of the 2012-13 academic year, plus the coming summer. I’m not predicting or suggesting — just raising the issue.
He clearly wants to start and may not want that to be at a D2 or I-AA school. And he probably wants to join Colt as a UT grad.
Thanks for the Sunday report again! Appreciate your work!
What do you think about Benson and Thompson at LB. Both will play a lot on Special Teams but hope both can provide some good depth at LB.
Flowers did RS this year correct? I think he will be great at OG and hope Riser can RS with the depth at OG. What about Mason getting an audition at OC?
I have been on Darius James bandwagon for almost a year now. He reminds me of Pouncey while at florida and Steelers. I think he is a beast and loves hims some Burnt Orange!!
I too was encouraged with Ash. Both passes bay Davis in the first have should/could have been catches. He needs a lot of reps and like us said coaching by Harsin. 7 vs 7 will help him a lot also.
Goodwin has said he wants to concentrate on football more, which is great, he can be a difference maker at times. So close with that catch Wed night!
Agreed with DJ Grant. Hope Searls can get 3-4 weeks with him alone, in a watershed, haha, will make him into a decent blocker.
Lets hope that KState D can make the Piggie O look average.
Perkins is the best pure OT(still love James as the best OL) in 2013 and probably top 10 OT in nation. He is damn good!! And from prior reports, Kent loves the Horns!
I agree, but its difficult to update the schedule, when u dont know if WVU will be in ur conference.
To me it will be a great blessing for Case to transfer. Its Ash’s job, Ash is a better QB (with an offseason) and i want both JT Barrett and Tyrone Swoopes!
Thomas Johnson going to Oregon for a visit concerns me, a lot! We have some talented young WR but he fits the best at the slot!
I think Benson can do some nice things, and Thompson can play. It’ll be interesting to see if Thompson packs on more weight and plays some DE. Jeffcoat feels like he’ll declare early and Okafor will be a senior. The problem with Benson is that he a little undersized. Could be a career special teamer or maybe a senior starter.
Yes I believe Flowers will eventually get a medical redshirt.
Excellent comparison on Darius James. I feel the same way. Elite center.
Ash needs to get better but he flashed some competency.
I think football is growing on Goodwin. Track is first love, but that could be changing.
Grant was a pretty solid blocker at WR in high school. I’d like to see that ability come back.
Perkins junior film was fantastic. Best pure OT in the state in my opinion.
Texas will be in a tough spot if WVU isn’t able to join the conference. The home schedule is already pretty bad.
Swoopes and Barrett would work for me. Not sure what Harsin and Applewhite could tell them to sell them on committing to the same school. Barrett had a very good UA Combine by the way.
Thomas Johnson would play immediately as a slot receiver. Texas needs to hold on, white knuckles.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 1, 2012 5:42 PM CST up reply actions
I don't believe Flowers needs a hardship appeal to get a redshirt
He played three of the first four games, then was shut down because of injury. That’s the definition of being eligible for a RS (playing 30% or less of your team’s games).
This is the exact same thing that happened with Calvin Howell in 2009 — Howell played three of the first four, then was injured in practice the week of the OU game, and never returned.
RGIII had the same issue his second year at Baylor — hurt in the third game, out for the rest of the season.
One thing I’ve spotted — and I expect it will continue — is that the staff will not pile up the redshirt totals the way it was done from 2001 until this season. The coaches are going to get players on the field unless there’s a compelling reason not to. And those who do redshirt, and aren’t contributing after 2-3 seasons, will be told that four is all they can expect. In other words, don’t look for bench-warming fifth-year seniors.
2011 red shirts (I think)
McFarland Hutchins Greenlea Flowers Doyle and Moss

by TheContractor on Jan 1, 2012 6:08 PM CST up reply actions
We need somebodies there...
And from the reports I’ve read he’s been taking some snaps there, but I doubt he’s the answer…
We expected Bergeron to lose some of his speed at this level and pick up FB duties, but he’s excelled, and with Whaley moving to D, the only FB we have left is Robinson who’s a SR next year…
I expect a lot of two back sets in the next 2 years being led by either Brown or Bergeron…
"We are who we are. People say what they say. The outcome is the outcome. We are proud of ourselves." -DeLoss Dodds 9/21/2011
yeah, i expect some 2 back sets but i dont think the plan is to make Burgeron a FB, he will be a power back that lines up at FB at times. He could catch some passes from that FB spot.

I hope we bring in a walk on Kicker/Punter. Any talk of attrition or at least being taken off of scholarship for Russ. So far he doesnt deserve it.
There’s definitely room for a walk punter / kicker. They don’t take up a ship.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 1, 2012 5:43 PM CST up reply actions
We could have Ash punt
He is pretty good and it would keep teams off balance with fake punts. We’d have to get a stronger position at backup QB before risking him even if the risk is small.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
i think u have a point, and i hope we do it a few times next year for sure. I think with Tucker getting tired, we could have tried it on a “fake” 4th down this year.
by TheContractor on Jan 1, 2012 11:02 PM CST up reply actions
Ash was all state at the 5A level as a punter
However, it’s pretty risky to throw your starting QB out there on special teams. I’d prefer that someone else handle the punting duties even if Ash is better.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 1, 2012 11:08 PM CST up reply actions
makes sense, especially we we want to RS Connor, cant get Ash any unnecessary hits!

Kicking situation...
Seems weird that we are having this big of a problem. From playing IM Sports when I was at UT, there were tons of guys on the fields who were great. The good soccer players were everywhere. I know I know, soccer is “different” but why not at least have some tryout?
Heck, other schools have done it and it has paid off. Just seems weird that a student body as large as ours doesn’t have one great walk on that comes out.
I'll say this
Texas should pay more attention to their walk on program. OU has filled a couple holes with walk ons, namely Dominique Whaley.

Walk ons
They don’t get scholarships until they make an impact. Always nice. Very low risk. Very small investment needed.

Club soccer
I have a buddy on the UT club soccer team and he told me the other day that Applewhite has contacted a few individuals on the team about walking on next semester. Supposedly 2 or 3 players took him up on the offer and have huge legs.
you just made my day!
I kept thinking this the whole time I was playing soccer while at UT…those guys that come from overseas have strong legs and a great ability to control ball placement.
With out defense
A really good punter who can change field position would be a devastating weapon.

Oops--Happy New Year and thanks for doing these for us.....
You already hit most of my questions on the OL—Flowers’ prospects, Hawkins enabling Hopkins to switch to his more natural guard spot. Wasn’t thinking of Hopkins at center hoping instead that Espinosa could benefit from more S&C and Searels’ coaching.
The good news there is Searels will have a much better set of options in 2012 after being forced to make do this season.
Jessie Palmer said on the Holiday Bowl broadcast that Texas will be better at every offensive position in 2012 (I think he meant each unit grouping). I agree. Putting that together with the play of our defense at the end of this season, Tim Brando looks pretty foolish calling Texas a program in trouble for 2012 at halftime on Saturday on CBS.
Espinosa must get bigger and stronger
I think Hopkins, Riser or Flowers could all play center. Even if Dom hold on to the job, I think he’s keeping the seat warm for Darius James.
Hawkins is huge. I think he might play be all conference in 2012.
For once, I agree with The Bachelor.

2013 QB's
I’d like to hear your thoughts on JT Barrett vs Tyrone Swoopes.
Barrett looks like RG3 Lite to me whereas Swoopes has better speed and a higher ceiling. Who do you like better and who do you think the staff ends up taking? Do we offer both and take whoever pulls the trigger first?
2013 QBs
Well at least we know who the final 2 are. I think Barrett is a better fit and more ready to play. Swoopes has higher upside, but will need a few years to develop.I’d be happy if Texas took one of them. I’d be elated if they took both.
Honestly, I think if Barrett was 6’4,‘’ we’re not having this debate right now.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 1, 2012 5:54 PM CST up reply actions
Barrett
I’m pretty sure the “safe” bet would be Barrett. I know his height and speed isn’t that of Swoopes but look at Kellen Moore. He runs the same system to near perfection.
I would love both but Swoopes seems to have his eyes elsewhere along with us. I’d say offer both and be happy with Barrett if he commits. His combine numbers weren’t too bad.
Agreed, Barrett is probably the safer bet
That said, I think Swoopes is worth whatever risk he brings.

Well said...
Brando is an unrepentant SEC honk and not very bright.
He never liked us
And CBS led their pre-season preview with a tongue-bath of the folks in Aggieland. How’d that work out for all involved?
He’s a gooner and his hate — and, clearly, jealousy — makes us stronger.

Thinking it through, Brando's comments reek of TV politics...
CBS carries SEC games and can be expected to promote its product while denigrating the product of its competitors. The main competitor of the SEC brand promoted by CBS is ABC/ESPN with the Big 12 and specifically Texas so far as ESPN is concerned. So, of course Brando will get in a shot, ignorant or not, at his network’s rival.
Not a minute later, Spencer Tillman made a comment about the Aggies looking good heading into their first year in the SEC. Huh? Any fool can see that A&M will struggle to win 6 games next season losing its offensive firepower and breaking in a new coaching staff. Tillman is no fool, just a loyal employee promoting the network’s product.
Bill
what do you think about the size of the upcoming 2013 class?
Best I can figure we’ll need at least 18 (9O/9D), which means another year of mass attrition…
"We are who we are. People say what they say. The outcome is the outcome. We are proud of ourselves." -DeLoss Dodds 9/21/2011
Sounds about right
I think the class will be between 15 and 20. 2013 is down a little bit, I think a smaller class is a smart move.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 1, 2012 5:55 PM CST up reply actions
I don't know about mass attrition
I expect we’ll start next season with 82-83 on scholarship, and around 10 seniors. Attrition between now and the start of fall camp will get us under 85. Attrition before next year’s bowl will put us in the neighborhood of 80 on scholarship.
I’d be surprised if we don’t have room to sign almost 20 in Feb. 2013.
Agreed
Texas should meet their needs, take a couple projects and call it a day in 2013. No reaches.

Based on our needs alone, I would assume dgb?
by Longhorn11 on Jan 1, 2012 5:54 PM CST via mobile reply actions
Edwards vs. DGB
Agreed DGB is a bigger need, and I think a better player. DGB could be the next Calvin Johnson while Edwards’ ceiling is much lower.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 1, 2012 5:56 PM CST up reply actions
Edwards ceiling
I agree with Bill. Edwards could also end up growing more and becoming more of a DT than anything.
DGB could be our Blackmon…would take him in a heartbeat.
2013 DBs
Just read the Cosm boy’s piece on IT last night, obviously now that Collins has officially cut us from his list I assume we will be going hard after Florida’s Marcell Harris, but they seem to prefer Antwuan Davis and George Baltimore…
Is that ideal in your opinion or are their any other potentials out there we should look at?
The only name I’ve heard is Livingston’s Chevoski Collins…
"We are who we are. People say what they say. The outcome is the outcome. We are proud of ourselves." -DeLoss Dodds 9/21/2011
2013 DBs
I don’t Marcell Harris projects as a LB. He’s too good of a DB to move him. Like Landon Collins.
Baltimore is a little slight, he’s a take, but not at the expense of Harris. Akina hasn’t worked so hard on Harris to just punt on him and take Baltimore.
Davis is the best junior CB in the state and it’s not close. I hope he’s healthy in 2012.
I like Chev Collins a lot as a safety.

Guys, Texas Football players go out, they go to 6th Street. Hell many of you have probably had a drink with them. I don’t have a problem with it if they’re of age, staying out of trouble and not driving.

Wish I’d thought of it LAST night.
I read the quote differently
Sure, there’s that interpretation, but anyone in Norman can have a houseparty. I think his word wasn’t nightlife but social life. I read it as more mundane activities like a mall and movie theaters.
2 part question, off topic
Hey man thanks for all you do, I read this everyweek. How come Texas never looked at Preston Dewey or Jeremiah Briscoe? Briscoe is a 4 star prospect on espnu with one offer from baylor.
How come we never hear about Alex Norman or Paul Boyette or Tim Cole or guys like that? What are expectations from them?
I’m well aware of both. Briscoe was at Second Baptist before transferring to Stratford. Yeah I’m not sure why he doesn’t have more offers. Schools could be figuring out where he projects.
Harsin looked at TJ Millweard, but went a different direction with Overstreet.
I expect Norman, Boyette and Cole to all be good players at Texas. Norman’s upside is very high, Boyette should be solid, Tim Cole could a couple different directions.

Old Horn, i agree, hope Connor can RS, Case leaving puts that in jeopardy for sure. But not if UT gets a juco/transfer.
I hope you’re right. I don’t see Overstreet as a true back up. I’d prepare Brewer like the back up, but not blame him if Ash is healthy.

obviously...and he would have if we had played in the B12CG

Sorry. Crazy fingers on the keyboard
We don’t know where the K-State game will be. We don’t know about W. Virginia.
We played OSU at home each of the last two years, and there will be more of that to adjust for the defections . . . we were scheduled to host Mizzou and that other $EC bailout team next year. We might have an eight-game conference sked and have to find a fourth non-con opponent if WVU is held up by the Big East.

I don't agree
Our defense grew up after OU this year and next year they may actually kill someone.
If Ash improves, and I am laying odds he will, and with the ungodly running game we will have (our OL will be nasty as well), we are going to be a serious load for anyone that plays us. If we land DGB we will be come otherworldly and mean NEXT year not just 2 years from now!
I HOPE that doofus returns at QB for OU next year – he will be sick of us in a hurry!

Stoops actually said Drew Allen is their leader for next year if Jones leaves
Bell is just a short yardage goal line guy I guess. Stoops has done no favors for Allen by refusing to play him despite big leads. OU has issues big time.

Weighed in at 291, but could have also shot up a half inch – inch. It’s not bad weight by any means. I think the Texan’s Antonio Smith is a good comparison. They’re both around 6’3’’ to 6’4’’ and 280 – 290 pounds. Obviously one is 18 years old and the other is an 8th year pro.
As a fan base, we need to change how we think of Texas’ DE. Get ready for bigger DEs. Manny’s first, second and third priority is to shut down the run so he can unleash the blitzes. You need big DEs to shut down the run.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 1, 2012 6:54 PM CST up reply actions

So contain the corners (run) and collapse the pocket (pass), less emphasis on pass rush for sacks, I guess Manny is using blitzing for that…

What exactly would you like us to cover? We’re not prone to covering message board speculation which is what a lot of the staff “turmoil” has amounted to at this point. We’ve talked about all the transfers and the talk about why players have left or been asked to leave. We were even contacted by a parent of one of the players who left and offered them an open forum to voice their thoughts/opinions. We were one of the first to get up the Mario Edwards comments and your own GoBR was sharing the story we posted w/ others on Twitter shortly after it went up.
If you want us to proclaim that the roof is falling in on Stoops and OU as many UT sites and message boards are claiming then yeah, I guess you’d be disappointed in our coverage.
Sincerely not trying to be an a-hole as I’d be more than open to your feedback. What have we not covered that you feel we should be doing a better job of?

I think 10-12 carries is the sweet spot for Gray, but he could get more.Again quality depth pushes guys to become better players. If Brown, Bergeron or Gray want more carries, they’ll have to go out there and earn them. Texas hasn’t had this much quality depth at RB since the era before scholarship limits.

Honestly
I’ve heard different things. I think the right opportunities didn’t come along. Applewhite kind of makes sense for U of H. I don’t think Manny would leave for anything less than a top 25 job. I could see Harsin taking a position at a smaller school if it was a good fit.

Put any stock in the rumor that...
Mack is setting up a retirement plan by setting up a Boise style offense by hiring Harsin and training Applewhite for Chris Peterson, then Harsin takes over at Boise, and Applewhite becomes OC…?

A USC recruiting guy said Armstead showed up to check in for the AA game in a Texas sweatshirt. This anything to get worked up about?
Thanks Bill!

From above...
Bill: Somehow Texas made his last cut. Armstead needs to show Texas he’s serious. Visiting Austin while he’s in the area would be getting serious.
Me: We made his final four but we haven’t had an official visit yet, so he’s on our radar now but I would get your hopes up…

De’Vante Harris (blOu commit) having great practice at CB. Any chance we make a call and see if he is interested?
Tower,
I really hope so. I think Harsin will stay but Diaz, who knows. If we have another good year on D link this year, you know someone other teams will come calling. He should not leave for a DC job but a decent HC job, especially one in Florida.
Harris
Harris told Orangebloods that he hasn’t heard from Texas. He looks like an early miss right now.

However, he doesn’t make the spectacular plays that Harris does. Echols is just rock solid. It should be very quiet on his side of the field.
Best pure senior corner in the state? Yeah give me Harris. I think Corey Coleman, Kendall Sanders could be elite at the position if they end up playing corner.

Any thoughts on the percentage of incoming freshmen that redshirt in ’12?

I don't think we'll see many
Jinkens makes a lot of sense, but I think he’s too good on special teams to not play.
Hughes should redshirt, but he is redshirting and there’s a huge need at the position.
Bluiett should probably redshirt. I think he could be the only defensive player to redshirt in 2012 class.

Unless we can get Greenlee or Kelley to both improve, the staff has told Estelle to be ready to go.
by TheContractor on Jan 2, 2012 12:57 AM CST up reply actions
I don't think that is a huge stretch
Kelley will be in his third year, which is typically when OL make the biggest improvement. Greenlea probably plays this year without the injury and illness. A full year of health, offseason workouts and practice/development should do him a world of good. The bigger question on these guys is whether Kelley’s attitude problems are corrected and if greenlea is really an OT vs OG.
Doyle and Hutchins are in the pipeline as well.
Another thing to keep in mind is we should have the entire starting OL returning in 2013 so it not like we need to get one of them ready.
you make a good point. There have been mentions of Greenlea not working as hard as he should in the wt room and getting a bit hefty. Hope Bennie lights them all up over the break!!

Should Texas land Edwards
This team just got that much harder to run against. Again, when Texas can shut down the run it opens up the entire defensive playbook. Vaccaro isn’t Supermaning against Cal if the Bears are running down Texas’ throats.

it was mention earlier why DGB is playing in the Army game instead of the UA game. Our politics involve with ranking kids. IE rivals is associated with the AA and espn with UA. Do those sites rate kids higher that are playing on the all star team the are associated with?
I was thinking about this
DGB is going to be a top 3 player wherever he plays his all star game. I think it could be related to the coaches at the games. MAYBE the Beckhams are close with one of the coaches at the Army Game.

Kirby Smart seems to be a phone call away from taking a head coaching job, but I think Bama could replace him. I don’t think Chavis is going anywhere at LSU. I could see Texas, Bama, LSU and USC (after the sanctions are lifted) being the top 4 defensive teams in the country.

idk about USC being a top 4 defensive team
purely based on being in the pac 12 with the new offensive geniuses that took up coaching positions. i know that they wont make players run faster or catch more consistently but i imagine guys like RRod can scheme some yards out of his offense any day of the week. just my 2 cents. oh and FWIW i think michigan could be a top 10 defense next year. boom. dark horse.

Haha you're going to get me in trouble here
BON is of course excellent and your number #1 source. Barking Carnival has fantastic writers and analysts.
Inside Texas made a smart move bring Eric Nahlin (Tips) and Shuttlesworth aboard. I’ve seen it with my own eyes, Eric talks to recruits, constantly. Shuttlesworth has good sources. Both are excellent writers.
I like Hook Em 247, but they do a few things I don’t like. It’s a good site though.
Orangebloods is certainly a community. It depends what you’re looking for. Young talent, Inside Texas. Community, Orangebloods. Accruracy, Hook Em 247. Texas fans are very, very lucky in the quality of coverage their teams enjoy. You can’t say the same for a lot of schools. Including a few in this state.

Walters did play C at Wolfforth
That’s not inside information on Hopkins possibly playing center. He could play center, he can play all 5 OL positions.
I think Walters has established himself at RG. I think he’ll stay there. It seems like the coaches have searched for a position for Walters and he seems to have found a home.

Sugarland? I sold my home in Sugar Creek 5 years ago
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
Here's hoping Direct TV will finally put on LHN.
I’m tired of going to a wine bar to watch football – I’m going to wind up being a wino.

I grew up in Houston
My family moved to Lake Travis about ten years ago.

I hunted deer, ringtailed cats and bobcats - right where Lake Travis was built
I grew up in Austin when you were just a glint in your daddys eye. :-)

It's amazing how quickly the area has grown
Lake Travis made a good decision going to 5A instead of splitting the high school up and diluting the talent. I think they can do well in the smaller division of 5A. Westlake has had an easy path to plenty of state championship appearances.

I think most of us saw Lake Austin play on TV
That HS program is a damned machine. Where do they get all of those corn fed kids?

I will say that my old alma mater, Austin Maroons, is send a pretty good WR to UT.

I miss Houston
I still root for all all the Houston pro teams. Dallas has been great, but the Cowboys obsession up here gets old.

Cowboys?
Quick question, off topic. Who has to leave Romo or Garret?
Sigh - Sadly, the Texans seem to be folding up shop - again!
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
yep - that's it in a nutshell
Doesn;t help that we have an aggy for a HC either.

The Texans should beat Cincy
Won’t go past that.

Texans need another quality WR
Andre isn’t getting any younger and Jones just isn’t going to cut it.
No question ...
Until he leaves, they are wasting their time. He stares at his plays and looks dazed the whole game. Makes me go crazy.
I will change my legal name to "I. M. Harsin" if Texas scores on a Statue of Liberty or Hook-and-Ladder vs. OU."

However, we have an LB, in Cushing, that you have to throw raw meat at to feed him!

It sounds like we probably won't be getting THomas Johnson
I guess all the recruits are suppose to be in Austin 1/20 and he’s taking a visit to Oregon
There's conflicting reports on that
We’ll see what happens. If Johnson goes on a visit to Oregon, I’m officially concerned. There’s always a couple commits that waver. Thank goodness there’s only 1 this year.

And its not a HUGE position of need...
like it was with Westerman…

Hindsight...
We were VERY FORTUNATE with Cochran…

If we get DGB it just won't matter about Johnson

Different skill sets
But yeah, I don’t think Coach Wyatt would lose sleep over TJ if he landed DGB.
Guys Wyatt is going to get some serious attention nationally as a recruiter should he land DGB.

Homers
We, or most of us, are Longhorns homers on this board. Who, outside of the Big 12 or whatever, is also a dangerous team going into next year? Please don’t name someone from the $EC.
My top ten
USC
LSU
Oregon
Alabama
Georgia
Michigan
Virginia Tech
Arkansas
Clemson
Kansas St

It wouldn't surprise me if USC was in the national title game next year

I think Georgia has a real shot to win the SEC too…

left UT out (too invovled to be rational)
But I think we’d be somewhere at the bottom (Ark-Clem) which would be great that would also be above South Carolina, Mich St, Nebraska, FL St, OU, and the Irish…

Everybody is coming back
They’re very talented, and they got hot at the right time this year. Plenty of momentum going into next season.
Plus it doesn’t hurt that the Pac 12 will be down again next year. If the Trojans beat Oregon, they can punch their ticket.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 1, 2012 10:38 PM CST up reply actions
The PAC12 winner is like Boise St...
Just have to win 1-2 big games a season and avoid a bad upset or two and then prepare for a BCS game, at least now they have a CCG to trip them up…

Matt Barkely is coming back
But, he is on my least favorite QB list just a few away from St. Tebow.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
I goto church with Barkley
Seems like a good kid to me, level headed and humble. Very tebow like in how he carries himself.

Mario Edwards news is huge...
hopefully DGB takes note and decides that the biggest story on NSD should be “Texas’ #1 Recruiting Class just got Twice as Nice” (Same as the day Jeffcoat and Hick committed)

WVU – W – WVU learns what speed and size means – also learns the meaning of terror
TCU – W – Patterson chews off ear of 2nd string OT
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
