Looks like interest in a rematch was minimal, contrary to what ESPN wanted you to believe.

Money talks

So hopefully the walk toward a playoff will someday happen.

need to control for cable vs. no cable...

…given enough data on hand, you can use a little basic econometrics to get the ‘real’ numbers. in itself, this might be misleading.

True--some of us, including me, don't even have cable

I don’t think ratings are necessarily reliable anyway, though. Nielsen households are voluntary participants, and are almost certainly not a representative sample.

That said, I do not doubt that this was the least-watched, lowest-interest BCS championship game yet. I could’ve watched at a friend’s house, a sports bar, or online, but instead I fired up Netflix and watched Futurama.

Good point about cable

I suppose ESPN is avalable everywhere, but not everyone chooses to get into the cable expense, inconvenience, whatever.

I voted with my on/off switch, made other plans and — after DVRing the telecast — opted to just erase it.

I hate that it was a conference rematch, but it was the right two teams. I just didn’t care to watch it. Saw a half-dozen “minor” bowls, and a couple of BCS ones, that seemed more attractive/interesting to these eyes. Even though nothing much was at stake.

Guess I’ve reached the point where the entertainment value is more important than white-knuckling over the outcome.

the vote with the remote movement had some affect.

I chose not to watch. Found one person who watched it until halftime. that is it.

I did hear that it was one of the highest-rated events in cable tv history

So it’s definitely worth asking how much of this had to do with its being on cable. I really thought it was a mistake to not put it on ABC, but that would’ve offered a truly apples-to-apples comparison.
