AP Top 25 "Post Bowl"

http://espn.go.com/college-football/rankings

Seems to be that the AP has gotten it wrong once again. UT, being ranked #24 BCS in week 15, has actually dropped from the final rankings in the AP completely and recieved less votes than teams they have beaten. Yes, I know, it makes little sense. Especially after the convincing win and absolutely dominant defensive performance during the Holiday Bowl. However, that is not the only controversy it seems....

There are other head scratchers as well. Wisconsin finishes ahead of Michigan State despite the latter having the same record, beating the former, AND beating the SEC East Champ Georgia in their bowl game. K State drops all the way to 15 after losing (and not badly) to a pass happy maching in Arkansas. That's harsh. It's not like they pulled a Clemson kind of like, oh what's that team...Clemson. FSU goes to #23 with a terrible looking win against the crazed Irish. Finally, Nebraska stays ranked despite get their backsides handed to them by South Carolina and having 3 losses in an incredibly weak Big 10 this year.

Seems that the AP has gone a little haywire this season. More than usual actually. Never fear ladies and gentleman, I'm calling at least a 9 win regular season in 2012. Plus, Junior Days are just around the corner and Maulerson (Jake Raulerson) seems to be taking the Connor Brewer Route so good news indeed. Thoughts? Comments?

Kinda crazy

that UT would drop…

Don’t see any other 5-loss teams in there though, guess that’s the only argument against Texas.

UT was not 24

in the AP Poll in week 15. We were 24 in the BCS in week 15 (likely because the computers recognized better than the voters how good the Big 12 was).

We did not even recieve votes in the AP in week 15.

Precisely

Texas didn’t drop. We went up. We went from receiving no votes before the bowls, to receiving some votes (but not enough to be ranked) after the bowls. And with 5 losses on the season, would you really argue that that’s ridiculous?

Actually I would because

looking at the schedule strength, we have an argument.

Edit made

the first sentence was referring to the BCS rank compared to the AP. Apologies

by STLaw on Jan 10, 2012 4:46 PM CST up reply actions

No worries,

But it still seems like the point is not really that valid about Texas. The AP did not have us ranked at all after we lost to Baylor. Yet,

UT, being ranked #24 BCS in week 15, has actually dropped from the final rankings in the AP completely

seems to suggest that the AP dropped us after the bowl win. More precisely, I would argue simply that the AP did not think us top 25 before the bowl win, and the bowl win was not enough to bump us in given the fact that we are a 5 loss team.

I actually think we are a top 25 team, but I cannot say that any opinion to the contrary is wrong. We lost 5 games.

Don’t get me wrong, I think the AP is wacky, and screws up almost everything. And to that end, your post is generally spot on….. just not sure that UT is the best highlight to prove the point.

Good Stuff though as usual STL.

I agree

UT isn’t the best example…I put us in there simply because this is a UT site and I think we were jipped. However, I think the biggest examples were the others I mentioned. Especially the MSU ranking.

Yes, the AP manages to mess a lot of things up. Should be interesting to see where we start out being ranked next season.

I'm not sure a 5-loss team has ever finished

in the AP Top 25. We beat Mizzou or K-State, we end up ranked.

We were 24 in the final BCS Poll, done in December. We were 25 in the CBS poll, also done in December and not updated post-bowls.

Forgot to add BCS to the original post..changes made.

I’m comparing the AP voting trend to the BCS…should make more sense now that the one word edit is in there. Apologies because I wrote this quickly

5 Loss team in top 25?

Wanted to test the 5 loss theory and only had to go back to last year, South Carolina (9-5) and the year before, Clemson (9-5).

Really

Bet they didn’t start four freshmen on offense.

Or have to rebuild from the Greg Davis ashpile.

My point exactly

How are we, with our SOS and conference strength, not in the final AP 25? Add to that, the computers favored us being in the 25 for the BCS. So, with that said, my point about the AP or even the Coach’s poll is brought into focus.

However, it doesn’t really matter because those final polls are worthless except as maybe a motivator. Mainly posted it as a talking point…

by STLaw on Jan 10, 2012 9:44 PM CST up reply actions

SOS is a GREAT point

And probably the answer. The Big 12 was so strong this year, it was ridiculous. However, it was not PERCIEVED by the media (read: AP Voters) to be as strong as it was.

This is likely due to the combination of the SEC getting the majority of the pub for conference greatness, the fact that the traditional powers of UT and Oklahoma were not atop the conference to give it the automatic credibility, as well as the inherent bias that is created with teams leaving the conference the year before, the thought being “If a good Nebraska team leaves, the conference HAS to get weaker, right?”

You could throw in some other minor factors as well: No uber huge OOC games to grab headlines early, A&M’s collapses of leads (especially against Arky), etc….

Why do we care? For AP rankings perception is reality. I think these perceptions hurt the Big 12 teams immeasurably this year.

Obvious example – If you magically switch Oklahoma State’s season this year with Texas or Oklahoma, is there any doubt they would have been in the MNC game vs LSU?

Big XII with TCU/WVU has 6 top 25

$EC has only 5. There two new additions are weaker than our two new additions. I’m tired of hearing that the $EC is the only football conference. We just increased the football power in the Big XII with the trade out and up.

We're Texas, We're not OK.

Just as good as Texas' resurgent season ...

… is seeing 0U start at #1 and end up #16, behind 2 other Big 12* 3-loss teams (BU & KSU). As far as post-season review, Texas was much more successful in resurgence than either land thief or aggy. Sorry to be lowering our UT standards a bit but kinda hangin’ on to a thread of positivity here. Glad we’re now firmly on the way up. Hook ’em!
