Who's your most hated rival? Cause apparently, TCU's decided Texas is theirs...

There's a funny thread happening here on some TCU Football blog about ranking your most hated Big 12 teams and guess what!?!?! Texas it dominating the conversation. They've got fabulous points like "Austin's overrated" and "T-Shirt Fan" and OF COURSE "Texas is ruining college football"

Star-divide

Now, there were a couple of good points... like:

"I hate Texas, but I feel Texas sees us like they saw Aggie, as a second tier rival. Maybe even third tier. I don't want my primary hatred going towards a school that could careless that I hate them."

and

"Let's not act like the rest of the whiny schools in the Big 12 and "hate" Texas. Let's blaze our own trail and find a NEW arch enemy and turn the tables in this conference. Otherwise, we are just another puppet in Dodds' hands. "

Sure looks to me like we've found an exact replacement for aggy... an obnoxious (albiet TINY) fan base who has decided that Texas is their rival and we really couldn't care less. Awesome. I mean damn fellas... 26-1 since 1970 and 61-20-1 all-time...

So I'll go ahead an ask it... who do you hate the most? I included anyone worth hating, in my opinion.

I thought the results of the poll were hilarious!

In all of the aggy whining recently and them jumping ship, everyone here has been preaching their hatred of aggy and their respect towards sooner. Well, the poll made me realize that everyone still has their priorities straight.

But since you insist. I hate aggie, ou was a strong second, but at least when ou talks shit they have a record to back up their talk.

Agreed.

I don’t hate anybody. Don’t like the concept. Word’s overused and is one of those fire-starter deals. I’d like to see use of the word scaled way back. End of rant.

I WANT TO BEAT Oklahoma more than anybody, because the Sooners are the measuring stick. If we beat them, semi-regularly, it’ll be the difference in 11-1 and 10-2, not 7-5 and 6-6. Beat OU and we’re on the inside track to a BCS bowl. Lose to them and we’re in the Cotton, Alamo, Insight discussion.

Well,

I really hate OU, A&M and currently Baylor.

You did leave out Mississippi State though… I will always hate them due to the fact that they hired Jackie Sherrill and I really hate that POS.

I only hate Baylor at the moment cause I don’t like Briles for his voting of Texas in 2008. The guy is a POS, but once he leaves I won’t have a problem with the Bears.

TCU? Hell, I really like TCU. Sad that they hate us so much. Kinda hurts my feelings.

We love you guys for letting us in to the conference, we just hate that it took us winning the Rose Bowl and A&M making a decision only an Aggie would think was a good idea to get you guys to pull the trigger on us.

It's ok for TCU

to feel the way they do about us. I’m sure Baylor, Tech and Rice (when they play us) feel the same. The SWC breakup was pretty ugly after all, and… We. Are. Texas. That they focus their hatred on all things Burnt Orange is really a compliment, because we all know the opposite of love isn’t hate, its indifference.

The really cool thing is that within a few years everyone will be feeling quite indifferent about all things Aggy.

T-Shirt Fans

It is entertaining when people use that term as derogatory while their university (and every university) spends boat loads marketing their brand to any customer.

When I go to Academy and I see a TCU T-shirt, there is no notice on it that says “Only a graduate of TCU may purchase this shirt. Please show your diploma at the register.”

It is ridiculous to criticize someone for doing something you are doing, simply because they are doing it better.

Back in January of 2010 as BCS NC game against Alabama was approaching

there was a sign just inside one of the Academy’s in San Antonio, that said something to the effect of, “Texas Championship shirts will go on sell immediately following Texas’ win over Alabama.” I wish I had taken a picture of the sign. Gotta love the bravado.

I can only speak for Rice

But we didn’t hate UT. To the contrary, most of my friends were planning on doing at least a portion of their post-graduate work in Austin. I had roommates from San Antonio and Houston who grew up (like me) as Texas fans. And this was back in the SWC days (I’m quite old) when we had every reason to hate Texas due to the annual beatings the Longhorns administered – but we didn’t.

When we went through freshman orientation at Rice, we were told to hate Cougar High and Aggie in that order. SMU and TCU were next in the pecking order.

Now baseball, that’s a different story since Graham arrived…

T-Shirt Fans

Here’s my beef with the T-Shirt Fan thing. This was a comment I posted on a buddy’s blog where he talked about how TCU does in fact travel well, and that everyone should stop picking on them for being a small school… in which he compared this year’s Poinsettia Bowl and this year’s Holiday Bowl and spoke about how many more T-Shirt Fans Texas and Cal have and they should have been able to sell better then they did…

I agree with almost everything you’ve said. With one slight beef… the t-shirt fan thing. I mean hell, I GRADUATED from the University of Texas at Dallas, so besides my wife and entire immediate family going to The University of Texas at Austin, I’m a t-shirt fan. (Unless I’m in the new and exciting "sub-campus with no football team" category. Fun!)
I will absolutely not contest the presence of t-shirt fans in Texas… hell, ask Oklahoma…
they’ve got plenty of them here too.

My only beef is the idea that TCU is somehow immune to this.
There are 9,500 enrolled at TCU plus as you’ve so many times reminded us, 75,000 living alumni. So a pool of 84,500 fans.

57% of TCU alum are female – 48,165
43% of TCU alum are male – 36,335

According to Adweek, 73% of men and 55% of women watch football… so, for fun, let’s plug those in:

Probable Female TCU Alumni interested in watching a football game – 26,491
Probable Male TCU Alumni interested in watching a football game – 26, 525

Throw in that on average 20% of collegiate alumni do not live in the state in which they graduated…

Total potential TCU fanbase: 42,413

Your new stadium has 40,000 seats and is expandable to 50,000.

TCU has NO t-shirt fans? None?

TCU's about to learn what strength of schedule actually means.

by Nico Martini on Jan 11, 2012 11:14 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Especially since the current TCU push is to make TCU "Fort Worth’s team’ there should ideally be a lot of fans out there who didn’t actually attend one of the most expensive universities in the nation. I love TCU and TCU fans, but one really shouldn’t rag on any other fanbase for T-shirt fans, since that’s the only way we’ll have a fanbase.

Thank you

I’m constantly berated by the “Blindly hate Texas because… they’re pompous and ruining everything” TCU fan. I actually went to TCU for a semester (which is the source of my dislike) and my issues were never with the students, the team, or the fans. (I had issues with the school and the leaders of my program. Basically I felt they lied to me and took my money for a semester, so I had to transfer out)

Just wanted to thank you for being a levelheaded, informed fan. I’m looking forward to seeing TCU play some good teams each week. Thanksgiving will be fun.

by HawkeyedFrog on Jan 12, 2012 5:36 AM CST reply actions

Nah I completely understand.

I live in Oklahoma (military family) and I understand everything you say. I just happen to get it 10x as much here as local sports radio always has a “warm spot” (sexual innuendo intended) for anything Stoops. Don’t even get me started on the fight song.

I guess I’m just asking because you went into their building not too long ago and had a good result. Most smaller teams (don’t mean that in a bad way) have a sort of inferiority complex (see aggy, tech, etc) and I was just wondering if that was kinda what was going on with your hate towards OU. Appreciate the explanation.

by 40A on Jan 12, 2012 6:37 AM CST up reply actions

I don’t think TCU has as much of the inferiority complex anymore, we certainly did during the Franchione and pre-Fran eras, but I think that the success under Patterson has made us pretty darn comfortable in our own skins. We and Texas are the only teams in Texas to play in all four of the current BCS games, we and Texas are the only teams in Texas that can claim multiple national titles (suck it Aggies) and now that the schools that abandoned us before have invited us to rejoin them the resentment is pretty well abated.

For everyone except Baylor. Man I hate those guys.

by HawkeyedFrog on Jan 12, 2012 7:11 AM CST up reply actions

Right.

I definitely wasn’t insinuating you should have an inferiority complex or anything. I guess I’m just used to aggy.

I suppose I hate OU more as a Texan than I do as a TCU fan- not hating OU was just never something that occurred to me as an option.

Even living in Oklahoma, this is something I can relate to. Growing up in Texas as a Texas fan with family in Austin fuels that. I guess I just never saw it as a “whole of Texas” kind of thing. Makes sense.

I did attend one of UT’s sister schools for postgrad, so there’s a tenuous connection. I root for Texas in all occasions unless it benefits TCU that they lose, because the strength of a state’s flagship program impacts how the rest of the state’s teams are viewed to a point- Texas being good has somewhat of a halo effect that makes the rest of us look good (even when, like Tech last year, the teams are really not very good).

Their mascot, the land thief, fits them to a T. They steal Texas talent, they steal other teams fight songs, they steal national title bids from programs that won’t lose by double figures.
The real reason Texas plays 0U in the Cotton Bowl instead of home and home is that they’re concerned that the Sooner fans will try to steal the Texas Tower.

HATE Goes Too Far

I think hate goes a little too far. If you looked at the age of the user base on Killer Frogs, aka OLDER. They have a lot of grudges with our new Big 12 rivals.

I’m excited to get these rivalries going again. We built rivalries with Louisville, Utah and Boise State and we lost all of them due to conference change right when it was getting good.

Big Distinction Here

There’s a lot of schools that I hate. Miami, USC, tOSU. Boise State, I hate them too. These are all for various reasons here or there, school images, slights over the years, etc.

This is different from a rival- I hate OU when we play, but they’re my main rival. It’s a respectful kind of hate. I have the same sentiment with most of the other BigXII schools, just to a lesser extent.

This is different from mindless Aggroid Texas hate, which barely tops out Aggroid self loathing.

My opinion:

OU is our only rival and I pray that they lose when they play us but against other teams I could care less unless it benefits us that they lose. I hate them as a rival but I genuinely want them to succeed unless it involves a championship of some sort. The teams I hate the most right now overall are A&M, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Alabama, USC, Ohio St. and Boise St. I want these programs to lose forever and i dont care who they play. Ill watch their games just to see them lose. I typically root for the other Texas teams with the exception of A&M unless they are playing UT. I rooted for TCU in the Rose Bowl last year, I rooted for Baylor in the Alamo bowl and against OU this year, I rooted for Tech when they played Cal in the Holiday Bowl back in 04, I rooted for Ok St this year to beat OU, I rooted for Houston to complete an undefeated season. The way I see it is if UT isn’t doing anything of significance then I can find another team to root for if they are doing well.

OU Hands down

I feel that OU has been our biggest obstacle more than anyother team in the Big 12-2… But I gotta say that I “hate” the term “T-Shirt Fan”. I got into it with a co-worker cause he called me a T-Shirt Fan because I didnt attend UT…. OK so I didnt but I was born about 500 feet from the stadium, and I continue to live here in Austin. I have cheered for the Horns since I can remember…I took summer jobs at the campus… I bleed orange and white…but since i wasnt fortunate enough to actually attend the university does not make me a T-shirt Fan. I actually care what happens to the university… All sports and academics…now I bust my butt so that when they are ready I can send my children there…I dont think youll find a more die-hard fan of an institution than me…So those arrogant SOB’s that call others that can go suck it. P.S. The co-worker was an Aggie….so there you go.

No I really do HATE Oklahoma...

And not just the football team. I mean I do hate the Swooners, no doubt. But, even more so, I hate the entire f’ing state. I live 13 miles from the damn the state line and I hate crossing the RR. I hate mf’ers who where OU gear in Texas.

Whenever I HAVE to cross the RR, the effect on my mindset is almost immediate. It’s almost like dying and going to HELL! First, they have crappy f’ing roads. Second, YOU HAVE TO PAY to drive on said crappy roads. Third, if you’re wearing Texas gear, you have to listen to shit-talking tollbooth attendants on said pay roads. One of their tollbooth attendants gave me shit about how she should charge me double for driving in Oklahoma with my Texas gear on. I told her she should pay me to drive on their state’s crappy roads. Shut her right up. Even they know what a joke their roads are.

Then there’s all my wife’s relatives (yeah, she’s an Okie…the only thing from that Godforsaken state that I like). hough most of them attend or have graduated from OSU and hate OU even more than I do. But still, the entire bunch are either farmers or teachers. And no disrespect to either profession, but that’s all they know what to talk about. Needless to say, my mood brightens considerable after I cross back over to Texas.

There…got that off my chest.

One thing I'll say about the Frogs...

they can play some baseball. And as far as all-time hated rival from this Austin born/raised Texas fan is, of course, aggy. I’ve been to aggie bonfires where drunken goofball aggie fans wanted to kick my girlfriend’s ass because she happened to be wearing a Texas shirt while sitting on my shoulders yelling “Hook Em Horns”. Go figure. I’ve watched the aggie band march around the 40 before the game, tarnishing sacred ground with their jack-boots. I’ve had friends and family who are aggie fans where I still don’t understand how I haven’t killed them with my bare hands after their post-game win smack-talk. If an asteroid landed in CS and killed everyone there but caused collateral damage here in Austin, it would be a price I’d be willing to pay. So yeah, I hate aggy more than OU.

27-25: SCOREBOARD - to infinity and beyond!

by spinmonkey on Jan 13, 2012 11:13 AM CST reply actions

I think that there is a discrepancy regarding what "hate" means to each of us.

OU is definitely our biggest rival, and aggie has been (in typical aggie fashion) a whiny little b****. But OU is also one of the conference flagships. I would rather OU win (as long as it’s not a national title….the last thing I need is to hear more about national titles from s00ners) than anyone from any other conference. Rising tides and what-not.

Aggie could be “hated” legitimately, if they weren’t so damn pathetic.

No…of that list, the only one that I could say I have deep-seeded, unbridled, wookie-style rage for….is Alabama. Why Alabama? They knocked us out of a national title game we should have handily won, and then proceeded to deny that McCoy going down had anything to do with their chances of winning the game. ESSS-EEEEE-SEEEEE. It’s enough to make me want to punch myself into a concussion laden stupor.

OU still sucks, and aggie is a whiny bunch of brats….but seriously…FUCK ALABAMA. (the fact that they won again is only consoled by the fact that LSU lost in craptacular fashion, making the entire conference look much less dominant)

Nick Saban is the Bill Belichick of College Football. And I hate his face as well.

by e1 kabong on Jan 13, 2012 12:26 PM CST reply actions

I'm pretty high on the Alabama hate train myself

That may be the only institution that could lose its next 700 games in a row and I still wouldn’t be satisfied that justice had been served.

by BrooklynHorn on Jan 13, 2012 6:25 PM CST up reply actions

Honestly, the only way I could "unhate" Bama is if...

2012 or 2013 we make it back to the NCG with them and just shit on them. I don’t mean the way they “shit” on LSU…but rather 470 yard rushing, and 200+ yards passing and 7 or so TD’s. A pick or two would be nice proof that we in the big 12 actually produce cover CB’s, rather than them being concocted by our conferences strong run game.

I want their entrails to bump along the field as they chase after Gray in a futile attempt to prevent his 3rd TD of the half.

Maybe then we’ll talk about OU.

by e1 kabong on Jan 14, 2012 1:12 PM CST up reply actions

Better yet ...

… maybe we just knock their all-world QB out on the 5th play of the game. See how that goes for THEM.

by robthecob on Jan 15, 2012 12:22 AM CST up reply actions

Someone in the SEC would actually have to get a really good QB for that to happen, and a great QB seems to be something ’bama has decided they can do without.

They keep taking ones from Texas, and McElroy wasn’t all that impressive. All he had to do was hand off to the Heisman trophy winner. A trained monkey might be able to handle that.

But we shouldn’t speak ill of the soon-to-be-dead. Once spring training rolls in, the Jets will most likely pummel McElroy.

Dan Jenkens

i used to not like TCU until i started reading Dan Jenkins books. Sorry guys, it is really hard to hate them now. I root for TCU anytime they are not playing either us or Texas Tech (family reasons on the tech thing).

i am of the “indifferent” feeling about A&M. I acutally think they made the right decision for them. They NEED to be away from us. TCU does not feel “little brother inferior” to us. Nor does Tech. Or OU or Ou lite. These schools have their own identity that is not based on whether their girls basketball team beats UT’s girls basketball team . A&M needs to go away and build an identity that has nothing to do with us. I applaud their manning up and leaving the family home.

The rival i want is not even one i hate. I want Texas Tech to be our thanksgiving rival every year. Of course i want them to bring back the pirate so it can be an interesting game. Don’t you sweat thinking of the pirate playing us the last two years?

other than thanksgiving, we have a rival. Its OU. They know it, we know it, the networks know it. I want to beat them more than they beat us. They are truly how we measure the season most every year. Beat OU and the season will be good. Lose to them and normally the season just does not feel so great come dec or Jan.

LSU

ok, i do hate one team. And the poll did not let me vote for them. LSU. They think they are us but in a trailer park. Cheating low life MF"s with absolutely no class at any time ever. And i LOVE me some Louisiana. Go there many times a year. Hold my breath going through Baton Rouge but eat and breathe and listen to music when i hit NOLA.

but LSU sucks worse than OU or Aggie (yes worse than Aggie, but i hope they beat the hell out of Aggie for a few years just to keep the world in order)

The blog that got this whole thing started

I had never even heard of the killerfrogs.com blog until I read this post. Every university is entitled to have their very own Beergut, I suppose, but I wouldn’t agree that the commenters on killerfrogs are a representative sampling.

Most level headed TCU fans know that Baylor and SMU are our historic rivals. Everyone wants to be beat UT because they have been so good for so long, but that doesn’t make them every school’s arch-rival.

I am a fan of UT, not only because I went to grad school there, but because in my opinion UT and TCU share at least one important thing in common – namely, the conviction that A&M is a bunch of slack-jawed homer buffoons who are the only collection of people dumb enough to think that running off to the SEC will cure the institutional issues that have resulted in their perennial mediocrity.

by TCU'90 on Jan 16, 2012 11:52 AM CST reply actions

Tons of fans there… But, it is only worth one thing: The baseball blog. That guy is right on, talks a lot about UT too… Reported Bell leaving Texas the Saturday before the draft, got it totally right… IDK, they annoy me, but I like reading his stuff. If you are a baseball fan and want to know what is up with TCU, good place to start.

I don't hate any of those schools

I’ve been in a while longer than most and I love my old Southwest Conference. I graduated from UT in 68 and attended University of Houston and UTSA. I sold a photo collection to SMU. I have family at A&M, Houston, Texas Tech. The old rivalries and the new are fun but I can’t get into the hate thing. I miss not having a lot of the old schools in the conference but i am glad to see West Virginia joining the Big 12. I hope that someday UT and Notre Dame can have a relationship in athletics. They haved a lot in common.

A UT / ND relationship would be great.

But it seems that ND has so many other distant relationships already that they couldn’t very well fit us in annually.

I LOVED the ol’ SWC! I guess I loved it because it’s all I knew as a kid growing up in it. Houston’s Phi Slamma Jamma, SMU’s Pony Express, TTech’s Bubba Jennings, Baylor’s Miracle on the Brazos, Arkansas’ 40 Minutes of Hell, TCU’s Jim Wacker, Rice being UT’s whippin’ boy, amuT’s cultish ways, and UT’s … well, everything. It was a great league. So many great rivalries, great characters, and great players. There was much more interest in pretty much anyone in Texas that UT played back then as opposed to, say, UT vs. Iowa St. in anything. It’s all about bigger & better for national recognition now but the SWC represented a good ol’ era of state & national competition.
