Sundays with Bill, 2011 Wrap Party
The 2011 College Football Season ended with Bama hoisting another trophy. Say what you want about Saban, or Satan depending on your preference, but the man is lethal with a month to prepare. Looking forward to 2012, can Texas join the BCS Party?
Talking points:
* Mario Edwards cuts his list down to 3. Texas, FSU and LSU. Edwards finished his FSU official visit a few hours ago.
* DGB cuts his list? Is Alabama out? Is it down to Texas and Arkansas. I'll break it down for y'all.
* Junior Day is shaping up to be huge. 2013 DeSoto RB Dontre Wilson was invited today. I'll have the complete list.
* Tyrone Swoopes appears to the QB in 2013.
* Texas looks out of state early in 2013. Two foreigners have Junior Day invites.
* Spring Ball is about a month away. Team rumblings, state of the program, what to expect in 2013 Spring Practice.
Sundays with Bill approached 600 responses last week. Time to shatter some records. Fire away.

I agree with that assessment
Otis Kirk of Arkansas 247 and the Hook Em 247 staff have confirmed that is accurate.

Texas offers what we can hope is an upward trajectory
Arkansas offers a more established and successful offensive system and staff. I’m happy Texas is apparently in the top two, because it has to be a tough sell to a star wideout right now.

The bright lights are quietly a factor
I think DGB will be a star wherever he goes, but would you rather be a star at Texas or Arkansas?

Well, if you're as tight with your brother as
DGB evidently is — and he’s a couple of hours away from Fayetteville compared to most of a day’s distance away in Austin — Arkansas is his call.
I’m intrigued by several different photo or video instances in which the younger brother was sporting UT attire. If he’s a UT fan, then maybe big brother joins us and the younger can be on campus in a few years. (As a student, I presume, not a student-athlete).
from what i understand
DGB’s brother was like a kid in a candy store on his visit they say he’s always liked Texas and that he really just loved being in Austin

I will say it again
Do not discount his girl friend staying in Arkansas. Check out a few of his tweets about her – he seems to be head over heels with her.
"We're Texas. We don’t derive our value or self-definition from conference affiliation.
If that strikes people as cocky, so what? It’s also true. None of us will chant our conference’s name when we have an off year and Texas Tech wins their bowl game. Our definition of self comes from us – not our conference, not our rivals, not media perception.
If she loves him she will want what's best for him, not her
So, don’t think that just because ARK may be a bit more convenient that she would allow him to choose anything except what is the best fit for him. He seems really grounded and so I think that she must be a great young lady.
Whatever he chooses, I wish him the best. He really seems like a great kid and whichever school he picks will be lucky to have him.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
Teen age kids! Whew!
She has a schollie offer at a small school in Arky – I still say if Gail would offer her, we lock DGB! :-)

let me ask ya something
Arkansas has a returning starter at QB. But he may not stay after 2012 (not sure of his class) so past next year no idea who will be QB meanwhile Texas has David Ash who looks to have potential to be a solid starter and brings in Connor Brewer who seems to have a great skill set. It looks like Texas is the better choice for the long term. Do you agree with that and do you think it will have a big impact on DGB’s decision?

i am sure DGB and family are thinking about that, but also, im sure Arky has someone in the wings also. We have a pretty good highscholler but our backup right now is still Case who could never get it to DGB. I dont know who Arky has but my guess is that he is better than Case. Thats what Arky is sayin to DGB
by TheContractor on Jan 15, 2012 5:20 PM CST up reply actions
Why do you say Texas looks like the better choice for the long term?
Ash hasn’t looked very good at all, and Arkansas has some pretty nice depth coming up behind Wilson.

I agree with yall , but lets say, for arguments sake, that DGB&family feel that the QB situation at UT and Arky are equal, than we are not having this conversation. He would commit to Texas tomorrow.

Our outlook is brighter we look to be in the Title hunt in 2013 Arkansas….let’s be honest they only got as many wins as they did because the SEC was awful last year plus Texas is a NFL factory id be really selling the whole “look no matter who wins the Super Bowl a Longhorn will be getting a ring” thing

I think Arkansas is a rising program as well
Of course they’re kind of stuck in Fayetteville, and play in a pretty rough division, but they’ll have their chances.
I do think if DGB’s priorities place a high emphasis on going somewhere with a good chance of reaching a BCS title game, Texas is probably a better bet.

exactly
we are the better bet. besides ill respectfully disagree about Arkansas being a rising program. they’ve never won a SEC Championship in fact they’ve only won their division once. they only have great years when the rest of the division is bad. and LSU and Alabama are gonna keep them from winning the SEC for quite awhile

I'm a big Petrino believer
I think the guy’s a lights-out coach, although he’s also a lights-out asshat. It’s not a program that’ll draw recruits and have facilities like LSU or Alabama, but I think they’re perfectly capable of pulling an Auburn and gunning for an SEC championship, if not a BCS championship. They’re still building.

He was part of a team that won the bowl game. He wasn’t exactly one of the better players in it. It’s actually kind of ridiculous that he won OMVP over Keenan Allen.

If Davis catches those balls
Ash’s first half wouldn’t look as bad as it did. That being said, he had a very nice second half. Enough to win without a rushing game.
Brandon Mitchell is a dual-threat guy who has also looked good in limited passing situations
But among other candidates, they also have Brandon Allen, a HS star who redshirted this year and will be a RS-soph by the time Wilson is gone. A top-five national QB who at that point will be in his third season under Petrino? How could that not be seen as better than what Texas has at the position?

It’s all guess work until they play in a game situation. DeSean Hales has looked like a superstar in practices at Texas.

Right, but the point is that Texas has less to offer
Limited passing situations include game time. Take a look at Mitchell’s performances so far. But more importantly, not that Petrino has proven that he can manufacture great QBs, whereas the Texas staff has not.

Texas hasn’t shown any reason DGB should be higher on the post-2012 QB situation in Austin than in Fayetteville.

He did a good job of perpetuating at BSU, but never had to create or establish a system to any extent. The challenge he faces at Texas is much tougher.

but never had to create or establish a system to any extent.
While there’s definitely room for improvement within our offense this year, losing your starting, second, and third tailbacks is going to be rough on any OC whose ground game is so important. I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to imagine that our team wins a couple of more games with any of our starting three tailbacks healthy the whole season.

Texas is the first job where Harsin’s had to turn the key instead of just hopping in a running car, as was the case when he was promoted to OC/QB coach at BSU.

Very true.
And in particular, I believe the incoming offensive coaches were all aghast at the lack of talent on the offensive side of the ball. There’s a lot of work to be done here in terms of talent evaluation as well as scheme.
I, like you, wonder if Bryan Harsin is up for it. I’m a firm believer in talent overriding scheme. Generalizing (and ranting now) a bit here, but if I had to choose between quality players and quality coaches (false dichotomy, yes) I would choose the players. I wonder to what degree Harsin and the rest of the offensive staff were surprised by the dearth of offensive talent, and I wonder how long it will take them to infuse our program with it. Based on the stuff billfromlaketravis has been writing, it looks like we’re well on our way.
Oh. Aggies, I apologize; I forgot you were there. You may go now.

There's a lot that goes into developing a QB
whether the offense is installed or not. There is no evidence to back up this claim:
whereas the Texas staff has not.
No evidence to back up what claim?
That the Texas staff hasn’t developed a QB? Well, there’s the argument that Harsin developed Moore, but again, I remain unconvinced that Petersen wasn’t the driving force for BSU.

No evidence to back up a claim
that Harsin and “staff”, as you mention, can develop a QB. If you are referring to ONLY Harsin, then I point Moore and Zabransky. Of course, you will say whatever you need to in order to solidify your argument, but Harsin was the OC AND QB coach at Boise.
For somebody who is so pessimistic and only looking for the truth, as you say, this quote makes me laugh:
I remain unconvinced that Petersen wasn’t the driving force for BSU.
There is NO truth to back up that claim. The TRUTH is that Harsin handled the offense AND was the QB coach.
ughh I hate that
Moore broke Colt’s record. I think Moore was a very good QB but put him in Colt’s position for 4 years against solid Big 12 competition and I doubt he wins as much as Colt did

I think we are both agreeing that the depth is unknown. We dont know how good Ash will be. All we know is that Wilson is good and has 1 year left at Ark.
We have Case and Connor , they have Allen. Arky can and probably is making a case that they not only have a current starter that is better but also the Arky depth is better. I am not saying Arky depth is better. But you can see where DGB would have to and is thinking about that.

I would agree. Sometimes, you gotta aim high
At least try to find the next Vince, or Cam Newton.
Only thing that bothers me about Swoopes is his level of competition. The skills are obvious, but he hasn’t had to deal with a pass rush, a 250-pound linebacker, an NFL-to-be safety. As we saw with Chris Jones and the running back from the Class A school, the Big 12 is a long way from Friday Night Lights in front of 600 people.
I agree

Swoopes' development
I think Harsin is pretty confident he can get Ash good and ready. This seems to be why he wants Swoopes. Ash develops well, Brewer develops and steps in, Swoopes has time to develop and have 2-3 years of good play at UT.

DGB
I don’t agree with Tyler Wilson staying another year is a deciding factor for DGB. Arkansas is very thin behind Wilson. Texas isn’t much better, but they have 2 QBs with starting experience, and a freshman QB who won a bowl game.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 15, 2012 4:56 PM CST up reply actions
Arkansas offers a greatly superior QB situation
Wilson has just one year left, but the depth has plenty of upside and experience in the system, which. Can’t be said of any QB Texas has to offer.

There’s no arguing that it’s a superior offensive system at this point though.

Big Cigar, I believe, told IT the other day
that additional attrition is coming. Thoughts?
Second question: We’ve about wrapped up 2012 recruiting, but if we end up with 27, 28 signings, aren’t we ALMOST ASSURING some of those players they’re going to get buried in the depth chart? Soon. And permanently. Should we be a bit more reserved about bringing in this big of a class?
Attrition
Honestly, I don’t like to speculate on what guys might leave the program. They’re kids most of them and there are a lot of deeply personal factors involved.
As far as candidates, look at the list of upperclassman that aren’t playing.

Big Class
I would submit that both Diaz and HarsinWhite would ideally use a larger number of players than has historically been used at Texas. I feel your point, but maybe when we get going the rotations are on a different level.
I believe you are correct.
I really like the idea of using larger numbes of players. It’s good for so many reasons, including recruiting.

Quick evaluation: I really like his length and wingspan. Good instinct, reads plays well. Disruptive. I think he’s a SDE all the way. Fits Manny’s system. I don’t think the 4.59 40 isn’t legit, but he’s plenty fast. Reminds me of a more polished Ridgeway. Has the frame to carry good weight in the 270 range. Can play inside or outside.

who do you feel should be invited to a Junior day and isnt so far?
for me:
1) Christian Morgan – TE
2) Baltimore – S
3) if Naashon Hughes – OLB – was supposed to be a guy we were going to give a ship to then he needs to be there.
4) Barrett – QB – loves UT and we need to see more of how he does in shorts also
5) Davis – CB
Early snubs
I really don’t like Morgan being left out so far. Texas really needs what Morgan brings in my opinion. Size, blocking and good hands at TE.
I’m OK with Miles over Baltimore right now.
Hughes will get invited at some point I think.
I think Barrett should be invited to second Junior Day.
Davis is head scratcher. Akina might evaluate the position more. I think Antwuan Davis’ back injury could be a factor. He LOVES Texas.

Worst-case scenario, we spend too much time of DBG and MEj and get neither. Who are the three kids we might finish?
you ain't a beauty but hey you're all right.
Finishing the 2012 class
I think Texas is all in with Edwards and DGB.
I think they’ll take Vincent Hobbs regardless. They’re not bringing Hobbs in on the 20th for milk and Sally’s cookies. Texas will offer.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 15, 2012 5:21 PM CST up reply actions
personally i dont like the Hobbs offer but yeah, i hear thats the consensus. We have enough TEs right now and add 2 (RSJ and Morgan) and we are in great shape! Hobbs is not needed and probably wont play as a true freshman. I think its a bad decision.
by TheContractor on Jan 15, 2012 5:23 PM CST up reply actions
Hobbs
Texas should only take him if he can contribute next year. That’s a very tall order. I think the coaches want another TE in the program to get a solution at the position started. This is Harsin’s call, not Chambers. You have to feel better about it knowing that.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 15, 2012 5:27 PM CST up reply actions
yeah, that does help. but we have DJ, Luke, mcfarland, Matthews, Terrell. we have enough depth.
Odds are that Jones is done at UT.
by TheContractor on Jan 15, 2012 5:31 PM CST up reply actions
Doubt they'd offer Hobbs
if they weren’t convinced he could play.
What’s this huge number of TEs we have? Graham, Irby, Howard are gone. Matthews, Grant and Poehlmann are seniors. Dom Jones was ineligible for the Holiday — is he still in the program?
We have the two kids — Terrell has played a bit, McFarland redshirted. That’s all we have back for 2013. Unless my old-guy memory is failing me. Again.
I agree it's getting much thinner at TE
The staff has allegedly told Hobbs that they want him to play right away. We’ll see what happens. This might be a Texas needs a body now situation. I like the 2013 TEs much better. Hell there are much better OOS TEs in the 2012 class that Texas decided not to pursue.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 15, 2012 5:33 PM CST up reply actions
Tight end is kind of a microcosm of the entire roster
This new staff, many of them hired 12-13 months ago, needed to accomplish two things over the past year:
1. Allow some of the upperclassmen to use up eligibility (the seniors) or urge a few limited producers to give up the game with a year’s eligibility remaining. (I can think of two; there might be more).
2. Get an extended look at what was left, and recruit to fill the holes. Also, to urge the non-producers among the underclassmen that everyone would be better served if they transferred.
Not a fun deal, no doubt. But the expectations are higher than 8-5.
Attrition
A lot of guys stayed because of the new coaching staff. They wanted on more try out for playing time. Those that have left haven’t played. I can’t fault any player for leaving to pursue playing time elsewhere.

Draft
Where is it looking like Manny Acho, Keenan Robinson, and Keeston Randall get drafted?
What are the chances that Mack’s eventual successor is already on the staff now?
Would you happen to know a guy named Tony Oakford? He’s from Lake Travis and he’s my boss at Rudy’s in denton. I know it a slim chance but I thought I’d ask. Thanks
Draft
No I don’t know your boss. Very cool that he’s a Cavs fan though.
I think Randall is a second round pick unless he destroys his senior day. He can play nose for somebody, that could push him into the first round.
Robinson is the 2nd to 3rd round guy in my opinion.
Acho won’t test off the charts so I think he’s a middle round pick.
I know the decision makers at Texas really like Manny Diaz. I don’t think it’s a head coach in waiting situation, but I think he’s easily the most likely candidate on staff. His media savvy is off the charts.

I'm standing by my Petersen theory
It makes sense. Petersen keeps turning down jobs…BIG jobs. Harsin comes here and Major is Co-OC with him…aka training in the system. Austin fits well for what Petersen is looking for and Mack has a great relationship with him. When Mack retires, Harsin goes back (I think he is still not buying a house hint hint), and Petersen takes over here with Major at OC. It just makes sense
Y’all love percentages. I’m starting to feel better about DGB than Mario Edwards. Texas is in the final 2-3 for both. We’ll see what happens on Signing Day.

Diaz
I think he’ll be paid very well at Texas. Near the top of the coordinators’ list. Manny allegedly just bought a pricey home in Austin. He seems committed to staying right now. I don’t think he should leave for anything less than a top 20-25 job, and if he gets that I’ll wish him well.
I think Texas would prefer a head coach with head man experience to replace Mack. Look at what Muschamp went through in his first year.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 15, 2012 5:48 PM CST up reply actions
Diaz is different
He isn’t a former player. He looks at things very differently. It’s not all about money for him. Seeing how he came through the ranks, he values experience. That’s what I love about him…he knows he has the opportunity to see how Mack does it and still increase his skills as a DC. I’d say he stays at least 2 more years unless it’s a top 15-20 job.

Something I've noticed about our late recruiting . . .
When GG and Wood left, we offered Overstreet at QB
When Chris Jones left, we offered Sanders and Marcus Johnson.
When Bible was known to be leaving, we offered Brandon Moore
When Darius White left and Thomas Johnson left, we offered nobody. Is the staff that comfortable with DGB?
When it became obvious we weren’t going to get Peat or any of the other out of state offensive linemen, we offered Hawkins
Now, we’re set to offer Hobbs . . . telling me Dom Jones is leaving
All this sounds pretty much like lose one, add one
Dom Jones seems to be leaving. Seems like a good kid that struggled with academics.

The DGB situation as it appears to be
I think too many people are assuming on this situation.
Arky has Wilson back for 1 year. However, Bama and LSU are both going to be very good again next season. The depth behind Wilson has NOT been proven and assuming it is great or anything close is not viable. That’s like saying OSU will be good next year because of their system. It’s an unknown and nothing else. Also, DGB and family are tight knit and value that. Do you really think Patrino can pull off the family atmosphere? I doubt it. Wyatt and Mack are doing exactly what they need to do. Plus, Dorial’s little brother loves Texas. Never underestimate the power of family with kids like him. Ash showed some poise. You can bet Harsin has pitched very well in that department. The thing about our “system” is that if we have a good WR who is a go get anything type, we are going to play action to him often. Combine that with a sick running game and you have a dangerous offense. I put us at 70%.

I was thinking something similar about his brother's

WVU and Big East are in non binding mediation
I think it likely ends with WVU in the Big 12 in 2012. They might have to pay through the nose though. WVU has some cash. They wired $1.5 million to the Big East’s offices as soon as they announced their departure.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 15, 2012 6:20 PM CST up reply actions
It is an interesting dilemma for the Big XII
As I understand it, our TV contract requires 10 teams and if WVU is forced to wait another year, what will that do to the contract as we only have 9 teams??
"We're Texas. We don’t derive our value or self-definition from conference affiliation.

B12 is required by thier tv partners to release thier schedual by Feb 1 if I am not mistaken
We will know one way or another soon…
JD’s like, "you want some f*ing pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, b*#&hes!"- RCCook
LSB: "Oh s#*t, JD. You crazy!"
WVU may be on both the BE and B12's schedules
The B12 will most probably be the official one but the BE can’t leave them off or they are just reducing the settlement they will get from them, if the BE voluntarily removes WVU from the schedule their lawsuit won’t do much of anything…
"We are who we are. People say what they say. The outcome is the outcome. We are proud of ourselves." -DeLoss Dodds 9/21/2011
Really? Maybe WVU will just breach their contract with the BE and just pay the penalties?

WVU will breach...
and the Big East will sue, however if the Big East leave West Virginia off their schedule the courts would most probably not give them a huge payout since most arguments will be established over scheduling difficulties (other schools adding more teams to play) but (like I said above) if the Big East leaves them off the schedule it reduces the effectiveness of the argument and takes much of the bite away from their litigation.
"We are who we are. People say what they say. The outcome is the outcome. We are proud of ourselves." -DeLoss Dodds 9/21/2011
Is there any law
that prevents the University from fielding two teams? They can play the Big12 Schedule with the real team and hold open tryouts for their Big East team. I’m sure the BE would back off if they threatened to do this.
no idea...
but that would be funny…
"We are who we are. People say what they say. The outcome is the outcome. We are proud of ourselves." -DeLoss Dodds 9/21/2011
Ha!
Yeah, I think the main roadblock would be the limit on the number of games a team can play in a season. Otherwise they’d be limited only by scholarship numbers, but there’s nothing saying they couldn’t sent out some of the deeper guys on the chart and walk-ons.

Starting Next Season
OL: Cochran, Walters, Espy, Hopkins, Hawkins
WR: Ship, Harris, Goodwin (unless we land DGB)
RB: Obvious
QB: Ash
DE: JJ and Okafor
DT: Take your pick
LB: Cobbs, Edmond, Hicks
DB: Diggs, Byndom, Kenny V, Phillips, with Evans at Nickel
2012 will be good for depth. Flowers and Greenlea add some depth for OL. DT will be lights out and look for MB2 to play often. If we land Edwards then even better.
There was some interesting rumblings at Hook Em 247 about Cochran
They guessed he wouldn’t be starting in 2012. Hawkins at LT, Hopkins at RT. I hope their prediction is inaccurate. Hopkins needs to move back inside.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 15, 2012 6:22 PM CST up reply actions
Surely they wouldn't bench Cochran
He played brilliantly as a true freshmen at LT
Hopkins wasn’t that great of a RT either and really struggled at times
That part of the report was perplexing
Not sure if it isn’t a ploy to push Cochran. I think he’ll have a good spring.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 15, 2012 6:31 PM CST up reply actions
exactly. They will all compete and see who are the best 5 and they should start. We have a good amount of flexibility at OL. We have guys that can play different positions and thats a great thing. Cochran and Hawkins will get the shot to play LT and RT and see who is better. Hopkins can play maybe all 5 if needed. Walters can play both OGs and Center. Flowers can play both OGs. Kelly stepping up would be nice! Espy needs a good offseason and remember that he was a RS Fr. OLs need a year or 2 usually. He will be better but Hopkins could play there if we have a need.

However, if Phillips competes like he has played, I think he earns the FS spot

Figuring Grant or McFarland at TE?
Bill, what’s your take at those two positions?
I’m thinking Edmond is an absolute beast, but question whether he’ll get to be the starting mike. Wonder if Hicks or Jackson might make it to the middle, the other going outside, and Cobbs as the will and staying in nickel. I’d love for Edmond to be a Levon Kirkland, but man, he’s really getting huge. About time to see where he might be able to put his hand on the ground, maybe?

Davis
He’s now indicating he’ll remain at Texas. He’ll meet with the coaches soon, and we’ll see where he is after that.
I think TE is going to be a big concern until 2013. I think Texas made some mistakes not pursuing an OOS option at this position. I think it’s something they must do in the future. Not many TEs in the spread happy state of Texas.
Edmond is around 260-270. Kirkland is an apt comparison. I think Edmond starts at MLB, spelled by Jackson. I think Tevin plays every LB position next year. Cobbs, Edmond and Hicks are the starting three going into the spring.

Davis depends on offseason gain
That list is from what I see right now. If Davis puts in the effort and gets his head right, he will rotate in as well. However, Cayleb Jones has some serious upside and Davis should watch his spot

Holy crap, I see what people were saying about his mom’s reaction. I don’t want to be too quick to pass judgement, as I know nothing about his background or family situation that might be extenuating factors, but she did not show much support for her son on national television. First time I’ve seen a mother react that way to an announcement. She wasn’t sad he was leaving. She was flat out pissed. I hate to draw conclusions as to her reason for reacting that way with no concrete evidence, but it’s hard for the mind not to wonder with that type of reaction.

Bama #1 four year average recruiting class. LSU was #4. Maybe there is a reason we pay attention to this stuff. No BCS NC has had average 4 year class outside of the top 8 or 10 (read that in an article). Only 2 teams outside of that have played for title, VT and Oregon. Sounds like recruiting matters

That '02 class included six players who were 5-stars
Three made it — Rod Wright, Justin Blalock and some QB or other
And three . . . , uh — DE Brian Pickryl, CB Edorian McCullough and WR Marquis Johnson. Pickryl was a stud in the making until injuries killed his career. Johnson, I believe, was an academic bust. McCullough played a year and transferred out west, where he didn’t make it.
That class also included Marcus Martin (Big Yummy, I believe he was called). Total washout, as were WR Robert Timmons and LB Garnett Smith.
But many of the rest — Lyle Sendlein, Brian Robison, Kasey Studdard, David Thomas, Aaron Harris, Aaron Ross Selvyn Young — were major parts of three memorable teams (2004-2006). From the opening of ‘04 to Colt McCoy’s early-game injury against K-State late in ’06, those teams were 34-2.
McCullough was in a SUV that had some pot in it...
Story was they were out on a field trip for their Sociology class, late spring or early summer. Got pulled over and found some weed in an air vent. Did not make the papers until a week later. Driver took the rap and nothing else was said. I do remember right before 2 a days, Someone asked Chip Brown about him and said he was gone. All this happened very quietly and it went away without any negative light on the program. That’s how I remember it anyway.

You do remember why Clemson’s DC spot is open?
Try 70-33. Now, that was godawful.
We got the 70 coming in next year (if the lawyers can work things out).
That was one game
Clemson was middle of the pack in scoring defense, above average in passing offense, and a little below average in rushing defense. I certainly think that bounce-pass play would’ve thrown just about anyone for a loop. Anyway, Clemson was definitely not as strong as Arizona against the run, but was significantly stronger in PPG and against the pass.

apparently
Geno Smith bounced the ball in the air with his fist(s) and the WR caught it on the run. No handoff. Had to watch it a few times to finally understand it myself.

Basically looked like the basketball equivalent of a touch pass
As soon as the snap reaches his finger tips, he redirects it forward to the jet motion guy running behind the OL
Yep, counts as an incomplete pass if it fails, but is essentially a handoff
It was pretty cool to hear Holgorsen explain it in the on-field interview after the game.

he may have had our # but we didnt play well either, mostly bc of our offensive staff mentality. “the wind was too much” was one of my most hated statements by Mack of all time!
but he is a good DC and now he has some HC experience. Good hire for sure.
WE have a damn good staff also!!
I'm not worried about our D
But I do worry about our O. So, the last thing we need is OU with an even better D.

I think there will be an adjustment period for Stoops

Call it the Pelini factor or what have you, but the idea of looking at Bob Stoops and Mike Stoops with there lack of upper lips and no chin on a daily basis would make me kill myself.

Maybe LHN can come up with that technology!

Get on the internet, check the degree plans and tailor your subjects to UT requirements.

I disagree with the internet. That is fine for facts, but not for admission
Admission Officers can defintely influence things. You go in and hand in your Application in person. You tell that person why you want to attend the school and what you intend to accomplish in your life. They get tons of applications with grades as good or better than your’s….so stand out. Make an impact. They can put you in the top stack if they want to, so go and try to make that happen.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
I posted below
I’m old and was being sarcastic, but TheContractor is right and I added to it. GO to the source. The folks that work in the Admissions Office are just like you and me. Go in and have a chat with them Face to Face and ask. They will learn your name, and be able to keep an eye out for you. Marketing 101. Show that you want it and they will be happy to help you get it.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
ive already got a trip to Austin planned just for that purpose
and actually i do wanna go to Law School lol but the odds of that are slim considering the overall cost. thanks for all the info guys
In The Morning To You
The cost is minimal when you look at future earnings potential.
I use to think the same way until I figured out that I needed to factor cost based on future salary not what I was earning before enrolling.
RUN AWAY!
Law school sucks…trust me haha I’m in my second year. Honestly, watch the legal market before deciding to go…it’s pretty tight for jobs for a while.
As far as JUCO goes. Email the department at UT in which your desired major in under and they can send you a list of classes that transfer. Getting in is all about overall GPA, civic activities, and your transfer essays.
Definitely agree on law school
It might be worth it for some, but with two kids and a full-time job, I ended up cutting out very early in law school. I realized that I was leaving the house while my girls and then-wife were still asleep (6am), returning when the girls were asleep and the then-wife was winding down (10pm), and in between I was eating breakfast and lunch at my work computer, and dinner off the passenger seat of my car as I drove in to Baltimore for classes after work. To boot, the days I did not have classes (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), I was swamped with reading and classwork. All told, I was going to basically miss four years of my little girls’ lives, harm myself with less sleep than one needs, stress myself into poor health, never have time to make medical appointments, and bust my ass for all those years, only to ultimately take a significant pay cut (most lawyers actually don’t make that much) and start off at the bottom of the career totem pole.
Read this if you need help: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/09/business/09law.html?pagewanted=all
Note that law schools’ employment stats, both income and percentages, are almost always false. They will hire a lot of their graduates as temp workers just before the various employment milestones, conveniently lose touch with many who aren’t employed, and find ways to not factor in the unemployed or ungainfully employed from their statistics.

i think all you need to do is take the basic math, english, bio, chem, history, etc. but the key is to do well in the classes. you will want to take most of the upper devision classes at UT.
My suggestion would be to meet with a counselor at UT and get his/her advise.
You are right
The real answer to get what you want is to go to the person that makes that decision. I give this same advice to lots of kids that want to go to law school.
Go to the Admission Office and tell them how much you would like to attend. Point out the positives including what you do for your community and why UT would be proud to have their degree associated with the work you intend to do in your life. And ask them based on where you stand today (grades and school) what they recommend and what would make you attractive to them to admit so that you know your goal. And, most of all, good luck in getting into UT. It isn’t easy anymore like it was back in my day.

I'm not mad at Kubiak
But we started 3-0 and then held Ravens on a 3 and out to have Jacoby let a punt bounce, then try to field it only to get creamed and give them the ball on the 5 for 7.
Also, Rackers kicked a nice field goal to be 6" short and have it hit the cross bar.
Then at the end of the game we were down by 4 on the 30 or so with no TO but only 3-2—Yates threw a Hail Mary instead of gettig 5 or 10 and having another 2 shots.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
wrong call, but dont you think the coaches called the hail marry instead of getting 5-10 yards and a first down and get out? bad all at the end on both deep passes.

Gregg Williams is going with Fisher to the Rams
Saints looking at Steve Spagnuolo, Mike Nolan, and Jack Del Rio to become DC.
All three would be great
Though I don’t like a 3-4 with Nolan
Williams though is extremely overrated. If he can’t force turnovers, you are pretty much handing the other team points, and the talent in Nawlins was wasted
He did OK
If JJ hadn’t pulled that nucklehead attempt on the punt and given them an easy 7.
I also didn’t like the last 12 seconds and not going for a 1st down out of bounds. But, our D is awesome and we have amazing potential.
So BLT….should I buy the PSL I’ve been offered for the Texans? I think it is a good investment.

I’d expect a little continued attrition (not that I’m a fan of it), and at least 18, more likely 20-22. I would think the staff would really try to avoid such a big imbalance, although I understand redshirting could offset that a bit.

California
I have asked you this before, but I still don’t understand why Texas doesn’t recruit more in California. It seems that all top ranked recruits in California either go to Notre Dame or USC. I think with the exposure Texas had with the Rose Bowl games previously that could have layed down some ground work.
Cali
This has been a point of frustration for Texas fans for a very long time. I think it’s going to take a few Cali kids coming to Texas and working out really well for Texas to recruit the state more extensively.

PAC
I am not smart or have any inside info, but as a tshirt fan from Corpus Christi, I think UT could have greatly benefited from joining the PAC conference. The level of competition would have gone up, along with setting a recruiting foundation. Another thought on that is Texas could have started recruiting USC to join this “Superconference”. As a football fan, I would have loved to have seen Texas play teams in California, Arizona, and Oregon.
i believe its hard to tell in the short term. We will find out in 5+ years. It might turn out to be a brilliant decision in a few years, it might turn out to be horrible. LHN better work out and something with ND needs to work out for this to be a win for UT.

2013 Thoughts
I think with such a small class there will be plenty of Texas snubs. Evaluations will be very, very important this year. Wylie East WR Marcell Ateman could be an early one. He is a heckuva player. I think Texas pursues if things don’t work out with Jake Oliver.
Additionally, look for more recruiting battles with Arkansas in DFW. The Hogs are certainly making a play in the area. Arkansas is a hot school right now for DFW students.

Wonder how this surprising bit of news registered with our old friend Thomas Johnson?
I think the two are unrelated

RS initially declared for draft and then decided to return. He apparently had a run in with Les b4 the title game, maybe things cooled down. Or maybe he realized he would be a 6th rounder.

Funny story about Cy Ridge (Shepherd's high school)
I actually was acquainted with their head coach while I was in high school. Coach Thiebaud is a really bright guy. He was supposed to be the guy at Langham Creek, but he didn’t want to wait and went to Cy Ridge.

Cy Ridge? For the life of me, I thought he played at at Alief Elsik

how much do you like
having a recruiting database?
the 247 and rivals ones are alot better than anything IT has to offer on that front
247 is better than rivals.
orangebloods board is chock full of morons. 98% of it is unreadable..mccomas and suchomel are readable. everyone else there isnt. ketchum knows less about sports than you or i. it’s a crap deal.
inside texas is the classic old school site, they have guys that have heard stories for years, know everyone they need to etc etc. and they’ve got the new blood which is very nice of course.
really depends…i’d say inside texas or 24/7
This site is the best - followed by Recruitocosm and Barking Carnival.
Excellent and knowlegable writers at all three sites.
Pay site – IT got a little better with the addition of Tipsy Gypsie and Jesus Shuttlesworth.
The fact you are on this thread is what makes this site the best – I understand it HAS woin awards.

Marcell Harris
I think his recruitment is going to surprise a lot of people. I don’t think he’ll commit to Texas early, but Texas has a great shot of landing him. He seems to really like Akina.

An assistant AD for football operations can certainly organize the strategy, help evaluate, etc.
But he could not actively recruit. Oh, a loophole would be if recruits were taken by his office to meet him while on their visits to campus. I am under the impression that would be entirely permissible.
