OU Venables off to Clemson (That's 2 coaches leaving Big Game Bob)

CrimsonandCreamMachine has a few takes on the situation

Star-divide

I could have linked many sites about the move, but C&CMachine in the OU blog on here and they are presenting some pretty good questions to Coach Bob Stoops (Not to be confused with Coach Mike Stoops) about whether the nepotism of bringing in Mike Stoops is worth it. Of course, only time will tell.

Most folks believe that Mike Stoops is a better DC than Venables, but that is pretty subjective.

I have a brother. I love my brother. I can work with my brother. But, I can't be bossed around by my brother and I don't think I can boss my brother around either. Plenty of times brothers have pulled off working together in football and out of football, but Big Game Bob is an awful narcisstic personalty and he does not like to be questioned or challenged. They have worked together in the past so they may pull it off. Then again, Mike Stoops was a HC and this is clearly a step backward in his career.

Oh, and btw, if you click the link to check out what C&C folks are saying I will give you a warning. Pretty much no matter how you try to ask a question or say something that doesn't praise their glory (even if they are saying it themselves) you will get rolled pretty fast. They have no sense of humor and follow the Bob Stoops' line that you don't question them or present an opposing view. So, I recommend just reading and not posting. I don't have a choice, they banned me awhile ago when I pointed out one of their many hypocritical takes on something.

And, wonder if they have an defensive guys that we should try to flip? Nothing is more fun and poaching a talented Sooner commit.

I mean no offense

But I think this

It applies when he tells Jamarkus McFarland and his family that he wants to watch Barbershop 2.

at least attempts to show a sense of humor. I thought of all people Texas fan would appreciate that line.

I don't know why BON changed its moniker

I still love “romancing each other since 2008” or whatever.

McFarland is hilarious. He will forever be remembered for his Christmas Fairy Tale.

Yeah it's a great line,

but he’s right. Besides yourself and maybe one other, it’s ridiculous.

Yeah, I'm still surprised by Harris and TJ

Something very fishy with that. And then to go from OU to A&M….that makes no sense at all. At least you will have fun watching him get thumped by SEC teams.

Defensive recruits to flip?

A lot has been made of the relatively small OU defensive recruiting class so far. They have five defensive recruits plus one athlete. Two of them are juco guys who have already enrolled. The athlete is Daniel Brooks, who looks to play cornerback. Texas did offer Brooks, so he could be a possibility to receive a phone call.

Venables is actually only listed as the lead recruiter for commitments by Brooks and Florida linebacker, while his other targets are mostly commitments to other schools (Corey Coleman to Baylor, Garland QB Seth Russell, NJ LB Lambert to Rutgers, etc.) or out-of-state guys who haven’t committed, but also aren’t connected to Texas at all so far. Obviously Texas can take shots at whomever they like, but with such a small class of defensive recruits so far, it looks like there’s not much opportunity to flip. If this move has any impact on recruiting in the area, it seems it’ll be mostly in whether other schools can poach away guys or win the battle for uncommitted recruits like Agholor.

He could flip them to Clemson

just as easy as we flip them here.

I don't think many OU fans are upset about this.

They got a massive upgrade at the position with Mike Stoops’ return, as he is the better coach and recruiter. Not much to see here except Venables is as bad a coordinator as we knew he was (even if he had us specifically pegged down on most occasions).

The Oklahoma sources I read

say Venables clearly is a better recruiter than Stoops2.

As position coaches/coordinators, they may be about a wash.

What I wonder is how much fire remains in the belly of Stoops2 after his Arizona demise. He just lost a HC job he was expected to succeed at. Can he be a fire-eater at practice, be a relentless recruiter after what he’s been through? Lotta times, somebody young is better at it.

If any recruit watches Stoops' mannerisms and player relations at Arizona ...

… I don’t see how they could ever want to be with him at Oklahoma. I know I’m in the minority here at BON in that I think Bob is a great coach with a great manner about him towards his players but Mike, at least in my limited viewing, seems to be an absolute jerk. Recruits’ memories, however, are pretty short & gullible.

I believe that Mike is going to be a great coaching addition to their staff but this may hurt them most of all in the defensive recruiting. We’ll see. I certainly don’t see any friction at all about Bob & Mike working together. Bob is well established and runs a great program. Mike will just be happy for awhile to not be media-shocked.

From a defenisve recruit's viewpoint

Why would anyone want to play for a position coach that is a recently fired, failed head coach who obviously got his job for one reason and that is because he happens to be the brother of the head coach. It just doesn’t pass the smell test. He may have been great back in the day, but times have been a changing. Mike Stoops is still licking his wounds from his failures, I hardly think he was a sought after DC.

Totally agree.

Let’s hope that recruits have your same mindset for the next several years. Then again, if he’s the coordinator that Bob thinks he is, we can look forward to a few more years of being outschemed.

I'm always looking for an advantage to anything Sooner

I find it hard to believe that Mike Stoops gets fired as a HC, and his landing is to come back to his brother for a DC job. It is a bit pathetic in a way.

DC at OU is a great job, no doubt. But, Mike Stoops was a HC at a large school, and it is a bit weird that he didn’t get a better offer than going back down the ladder to the same spot he used be. I’m sure they get along great and all, but that isn’t very ambitious. I wonder how much his heart will be in it and what his morale will be like.

Even more weird,

is I don’t remember hearing ANYTHING about job offers elsewhere. All I heard was “back to OU” and that’s it.

by 40A on Jan 19, 2012 4:15 PM CST up reply actions

Really!?

Never heard anything about that.

I question the accuracy of this

I don’t think there’s been a word of an offer.

Google if you like

It’s entirely possible the source was wrong. It doesn’t appear we’ll ever know for sure, because Stoops ultimately chose to take the co-DC (now just DC) job at OU instead of the co-DC job at Ohio State.

Yeah.

I’m wary. Dean Blevins is local and he is downright ridiculous.

We will see what happens with the DC position at OU, because in order to get a new LB coach at OU the calibre Stoops is used to, a Co-DC tag might have to work.

Iowa..

was rumored to be interested since their DC retired. But maybe this was more wishful thinking from Hawkeye fans. (Both Bobby and Mike played at Iowa.)

by Go Bevo on Jan 20, 2012 8:51 AM CST up reply actions

Yep, both got their coaching starts there under Fry as well

I really can’t think of a better coaching tree in college football today than Hayden Fry’s.

I wonder if Iowa might be interested in bring Jim Leavitt back.

NO way he leaves

San Fran after there year for mediocre college football.

by 40A on Jan 20, 2012 9:54 AM CST up reply actions

Iowa? That's not really mediocre college football

And I’m saying he’d be the DC, whereas he’s a mere LB coach at SF.

They had a year where they won 11 games

and another year where they won 10, but over the last decade they’ve been pretty mediocre. Check the records.

A LB coach for the number 1 defense in the league should be looking for DC jobs in the league, at worst, top tier college football. Not mediocre big ten jobs.

by 40A on Jan 20, 2012 10:11 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah, but Leavitt is also a supposedly disgraced coach

He has ties to Iowa, and was a GA there at the same time Ferentz was an assistant.

saw in the paper that Venables was getting in the $420,000 range as dc.. i think they got their money’s worth with him! now brother gets $750,000?!?
frankly, i can’t stand to look at either of them. but maybe recruits will dislike bro more.
clemson could not be a better place for V. south carolina is heaven compared to chokelahoma. did i mention ou sux? can’t wait to go to ole miss and see all the sec crap they do! our young team should be on full throttle by then. hope houston nutt is there to see what he did (n’t) do for that program.
Ferentz is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overpaid.
