Prediction time: Texas Basketball

Pre season conference predictions for Texas basketball are not worth much since we didn't know how these guys would play together. Like much of the longhorn nation, I have not been able to watch much early season basketball since we now have our own network but cannot watch any games since so few of us have access to the network (great plan by the way).

So for those of you who have been able to watch the games, what do you think of our team? How will we match up against the rest of the big 12? Do we have a chance against Baylor and Kansas? the two SEC teams: Mizzou and am?Are we a 5th place team or better?

5th Sounds about right

we may have a better team than the Aggies as they lost to Rice. Two victories over the Agroids,OU and a first round W in the tournament and I’m happy.

An ything above that and it’s Barnes for coach of the year.

I'd say we are extremely average.

I’ve seen 4-5 games on TV and went to the Rice game. It’s the same as it has been for years: We have a lot of talented young guys that will probably leave in 1-2 years. I’d say we go 20-11.

Seen every game minus

Sam Houston State, Oregon State and UCLA

Mehh. I as much more optimistic before the season, very little development by Wangmene and he plays too much do to our lack of height and depth. Wangmene is a total liabilty on offense though, so like it was with Dogus or Justin Mason( the latter part of his career) our guys play 4 on 5 basketball with him on the floor on the offensive end.

Chapman looks decent. I’m glad he was redshirted, he is lightyears ahead of Matt Hill in terms of offensive production,

I’m impressed by Jaylen Bond, he has really picked it up the last few games, as has Sterling Gibbs who struggled to adjust to the speed of the game early on. Bond is a beast inside definitely one of our best rebounders. Gibbs has started to stroke it a lot more from the field, and now isn’t a liabilty when he subs in for Kabongo or J’Covan

Myck Kabongo has struggled mightily in the 1st half of all of our games, but picks it up in the 2nd half. He has a lot of developing to do

Jonathan Holmes needs to stay out of foul trouble. He is a very athletic forward that can hit 3’s and is probably our 2nd or 3rd best player at this point. He seems to get it, and will be fun to watch in a couple seasons

Julien Lewis is out with an injured hand. He may miss Iowa State and Okie State he may not. He has showed promise so far, but needs J’Covan or Kabongo to set up his shots.

Sheldon McClellan has so far impressed me the most of the class. He fits the Jordan Hamilton 3 role very well, and takes good shots. He is a very skilled player that will be fun to watch the next few years.

J’Covan Brown has improved a lot. He has taken the leadership role very well but has struggled with his shot lately. He scores around 20 a game because the team needs someone to score, he is smart enough now to make sure to take shots in the flow of the offense. The one thing that irks me the most about this team is that on some possessions that J’Covan is on the floor, he never touches the ball. His ability to create for others alone should be reason for him to touch the ball every possession even when he’s cold.

These next few games will be crucial for us to see about making the tournament again. Iowa State is on ESPNU, Okie State is on LHN and TAMU is on ESPN or ESPN2, so at least 2 of 3 are watchable. I expect us to peak soon, like we have in the past with Barnes and in that stretch beat KU, and Baylor or Mizzou. I see a 4th or 5th place finish in the Big XII and an at large bid to the tournament, and an early exit again

I predict
Iowa State 1-1 ( We will lose Weds if julien lewis is out)
OU 1-1
TAMU 2-0
Tech 2-0
KState 0-2 ( Curse Continues)
KU 1-1
Baylor 1-1
Mizzou 1-1
Ok state 2-0
11-7 in Big XII play, however this seems to be a best case scenario. If any of our guys miss significant playing time, this team could easily go 6-12 in Big XII play. We are a very mediocre team compared to the past

Thanks.

Obviously you predict some home court advantage to our team in getting some of those splits. I have gotten to watch two games and I am still trying to figure out who are guys are so it is hard to evaluate prospects. I appreciate the insight.

No way we beat KU or BU this year.

I actually think we’ll beat KSU at home but lose to A&M in College Station.
For what it’s worth (which isn’t much), I think it’ll look more like this:
ISU 2-0
OSU 2-0
TAMU 1-1
Mizzou 0-2
KSU 1-1
Kansas 0-2
Baylor 0-2
Tech 2-0
Okie 2-0

10-8 in conference, 20-11 overall.
My guess is we’ll get screwed by getting paired with a hot team in the first round of the tourney and lose. Dark days since the departures of Kevin Durant and Colt McCoy…….
