and the score coming down the stretch was like Texas 11 Tech 7 late late in the second half. We lost final score 13-15. It was sad.

Horns can do it

12 games to play, Horns need to probably go 7-5 (4 losses against ranked teams and 7-1 against the unranked teams), and then they should win at least 1 game in the Big XII tourney (and assuming they lose the second game), for a final record of 20-13. With the Horns’ schedule this year, it seems that should be good enough to get into the NCAA tourney. Six teams from the Big XII should make it, so staying ahead of OK, OK State, A&M, and TT is vital.
Going 19-14, the road becomes a little tougher…so doing well against the non-ranked opponents, even on the road, is imperative.

Still trying to figure out how we lost that one at the end

The key things down the stretch:

Texas only scored on one of their last 5 possessions.

Kansas had two big three point plays. Myck’s foul on the Tyshawn Taylor jump shot, and the Robinson to Withey shot/pass thing where Chapman over committed on help and left Withey all alone. These were two big defensive breakdowns at a bad time.

If Texas can score on one more possession, or doesn’t have one of the two breakdowns, they win.

Trying so hard to get excited about the future of this team...

but having trouble finding a reason. I loved last years team with CoJo, TT, and Hammy, but I just don’t see the same talent level on this current roster.

All of our young guys seem like JAGs (even Myck, he’s quick and has good handles, but he lacks vertical explosiveness and he’s turnover prone) and JCovan is too short and athletically limited to win games on his own, despite having a Kobe-level floor game. Even if JCovan stays next year, the guys on our current roster don’t seem to offer the upside to compete for Natty.

I hope I’m wrong.

by feltgod on Jan 21, 2012 5:32 PM CST reply actions

here's the truth

rick barnes is a great recruiter, solid developer of talent, and a decent game planner.

he is terrible at in-game coaching. i don’t remember the last time we pulled off an actual “play” on a last possession. usually, it’s just ‘give it to the star and let him go.’

really, at what time during that game did anyone say, “way to draw it up, rick” ???

that being said, we’re light years ahead of where we were, and we’d be crazy to trade away year after year success on a chance. although…. bradley stephens continues to impress.

by elcapitan009 on Jan 21, 2012 5:36 PM CST reply actions

Here's the truth

Barnes has built our program
But he is the worst late game coach in college basketball, and has gotten us as far as he will

That being said,We have the biggest budget in D1 and most revenue, I think we can find a coach that can do better. Even if it means less nba guys, its all about W’S. Barnes has lost it, 4 of last 5 seasons we lost in the 1st weekend. The last 2 seasons being some of the worst work possible by a coach.

I love Brad Stevens'

But I am in with Barnes through thick and thin, and for better or for worse.

I also think there is zero chance of a program like Texas attracting Stevens. If he leaves Butler, it will be for a top tier blue blood job, or perhaps IU. I suspect that he rather likes his life currently, and isn’t particularly motivated by money. Given that he quit a pretty high paying job with good career prospects to take a job at the bottom of the coaching world to get his start. Anyway, while his salary isn’t publicly known, it is probably in the $750,000-$1,000,000 range. I could live off of that, and I imagine that he could as well. Also consider that his predecessor left for a major conference job at Iowa and flamed out after three seasons. Stevens can last far longer at Butler.

Don’t you think every major conference school with a coaching vacancy in the last two years has already reached out to Stevens? Some really nice jobs (like the Maryland one) have come open, and he has not ever been mentioned. The Indiana job might be the sort of thing that would get him out of Butler, because I think he is pretty happy staying in Indiana. I see him as more of an Izzo or Boeheim type. The sort that is coaching where he is from, has deep roots that grow deeper with time, and doesn’t ever want to leave.

Thoughts from the Drum

The crowd was good but not great. There were still too many empty seats. The students upstairs sat on their asses the entire game. And there were at least 2,000 Kansas fans in the building who made plenty of noise.

JCB is disgusting (in a good way). I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — he can play for me any time. He’s that good and that fun to watch. While limited with pure athleticism and quickness, he’s as crafty and smart a player as I’ve seen at Texas. And one of the true marks of great player, his game gets better against tougher competition.

Kabongo was mostly MIA today. KU was defending him with bigger and more physical players early in the first and he look uncomfortable and confused.

Chapman was outstanding. For as much crap as I’ve written and said about him over the last four plus years, he deserves credit now. He was BIG on both ends of the floor and his length is critical for the success of this team. If he can continue to put games likes this together, Texas will be back in NCAA tournament.

Bond gave us a few good boards off the bench.

Lewis is slowly shooting me to death.

I liked what I saw from McClellan. His first half offense kept Texas from getting blown out of our own building. He needs to learn to play through contact, though.

Kansas is solid. TRob is fantastic, Withey gives them great size, Taylor is much improved from the past few seasons, and the rest provide the defense and rebounding necessary to complete a top notch club. The Jayhawks are a step below elite but not far from it.

Texas battled hard today, just like they did at Mizzou and at K State, but has now come up short in back to back to back games. Gritty effort in all but still three Ls.

Horns need to get to 10 wins for a tourney berth and that is still possible. Getting to 10 will have to include a win over Mizzou or K State in Austin, and maybe over both.

I’m disappointed with the loss but not the effort.

Chappy

I’ll think he’ll get better and better, now that he’s logging lots of gametime against tough competition

by following on Jan 21, 2012 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

J'Covan leaves it all out on the floor every game

Not his best shooting game, but the guy plays so hard. Even when his shots weren’t falling, he was making plays passing the ball and on defense. He even broke up a two on one fast break by the Jayhawks.

I really want this team to break through and win one of these tough ones. It is so hard to see them come so close after playing so hard, and still lose.

Texas still needs to get better of taking care of business at the end of the games. The freethrow shooting is there, but we still get bad possessions and make bad turnovers down the stretch.

Now, Kansas is really tough in half-court defense. And at the end of the game, when things slow down, I think that was a big part of Texas’ troubles. Myck hasn’t yet made the leap we need, and Barnes really want the ball in Brown’s hands at the end of the game. I don’t blame him, but we will be much better off when Myck is ready for these situations, and Brown can work off the ball to get a better shot.

Hook ’em.

Texas should move

to a smaller arena. I know they would have to build it, and it would cost ticket sales but the place would get a lot louder.

Also, the fake texas fans ( there are so many) who only go for big games wouldn’t have to show up to fill the arena. And the student section wouldn’t be empty for half of the games. Really though, it would cut down on fake fans, that I absolutely can’t stand, if you can’t go to at least a couple games in december or november you don’t deserve to watch texas play better competition.
