[Update]: It seems as if the visit is back on after Johnson spoke with Major Applewhite on Monday evening, who was apparently able to address concerns about potential playing time and the level of interest that Texas has in Johnson. --GoBR--

After Texas reached out to schedule an official visit for Pflugerville Hendrickson ATH Daje Johnson, a TCU commit, the speedy prospect announced on Monday evening via his Twitter page that he will be sticking with his pledge to the Horned Frogs, which will apparently end his recruitment by Texas.

When the Longhorns first initiated contact back in the fall, it sounded like Johnson was ready to at least seriously consider flipping his commitment, but the offer never came and it appears that Texas waited too long to become serious.

Damn

Thanks for posting.

Let’s say we land Santos – who would be the other pickup in this class, if any?

This could increase

the odds that Texas offers Mesquite Horn tight end Vincent Hobbs, who should learn if Texas is going to offer him some time this week. I believe I saw somewhere that Hobbs canceled his official visit to Colorado, which is probably a good sign for the Longhorns.

Would really have loved to get Daje

Everything I’ve read, including quotes from Hobbs, is that if Texas offers he commits. If not, he’s probably going to Memphis

Rock and a hard place, it seems to me

Texas wanted him to decommit before visiting . . . TCU said if you decommit, you’re gone. And, pre-visit, Texas probably wouldn’t make a firm offer.

Too bad if he really was interested in Texas. But totally understandable.

any insight?

Why was he forced to decommit? Others are not.

I'm speculating

But if Texas hasn’t guaranteed him a spot . . . and TCU guarantees his ‘ship is gone if he visits Texas — what’s the young man to do?

Maybe he really likes the Frogs, or just feels we’re vulturing in at the last minute. Good try by our staff. Nothing ventured, etc.

psssh fine we dont him

he can sit at home in Fort Worth and watch our commits win Championships

But we’ve already got a tasty cake.

Certainly seems that way

Not long ago we were supposed to have the #1 recruiting class. Now I’m not sure we make the top 5.

Alabama has the #1 class for sure, FSU has a really small but talented class. I don’t see 3 other teams being ahead of Texas at all.

No, just expressing my usual pessimism

and the fact that so many of these top players we have targeted in the last few weeks seem to be comitting or re-confirming their commitment elsewhere, thus raising the rankings of other programs which can then “leap-frog” over us. Maybe I should have said we may not finish in the top 3. Of course, as we all painfully witnessed with GG, top recruits don’t always pan out.

by OBdoc on Jan 25, 2012 7:25 AM CST up reply actions

I think that margin of error in pan-out rates generally makes ranking differences of 5-10 spots almost nil

As you said, some don’t pan out, and comparing some stronger classes to weaker ones at UT the past decade, it’s apparent that it’s entirely possible to get more out of a weaker class. Like the individual recruit ratings, these composite team recruiting class rankings indicate nothing more than minute differences in odds of player quality, not actual player quality.

OU WRs

Big game Bob is doing an in-home with DGB and his family tonight. I haven’t heard any word yet on Trey Metoyer, but he should have been enrolled already and is allegedly waiting on the clearinghouse. Is there any word on whether Metoyer will get in?

Fellow Missourian Durron Neal had allegedly said that DGB was not thrilled about OU’s depth chart. I assumed that meant Metoyer since he’s the only real threat to DGB’s playing time. So, could it be that Big Game Bob doesn’t think Metoyer is gonna make it and is making the sales pitch to DGB that he is the main man?

We're Texas, We're not OK.

i think you go for dgb

no matter what. depth chart, whatever…you try to get him. i don’t know if the metoyer thing would play into any of that thinking at all. also, the ou guys seem to think he’s gettin in.

by mattw on Jan 23, 2012 9:35 PM CST up reply actions

Metoyer and OU said that last year too

Yes, every school is obviously going after DGB. But, DGB had quietly cut OU even according to OU commit Neal. Now, DGB is allowing Stoops to do an ‘in-home’ so it makes me wonder if DGB’s concern of being behind Metoyer has been removed. But, who knows?

Sure seems like Major knows how to relate with these kids, especially during the process

It’s been impressive to watch this staff turn every stone even after locking up a Top 10 class as is. But I particularly like that coaches aren’t overreacting to the ebbs and flows of 17 and 18 year old HS kids’ emotions. We’re going after the guys we think would make Texas better full stop. If they go cold on us, we keep trying to see if we can get a foot back in the door. That’s huge.

It makes no sense at all the Texas would ask Daje to de-commit prior to offering. Thats not fair to him. Makes sense that he would say no. GoBR, i read that it might not be over also. Hope its true. Have him visit and put the charm on, he loves us already!! Go get him Mack!!

I dont like Stoops getting an in home with DGB.

I hope the staff really thinks a few times before the offer to Hobbs. Santos and Daje and all in on DGB!

by TheContractor on Jan 23, 2012 11:22 PM CST reply actions

i think TCU wants him to decommit if he wants to visit anywhere else

like if TJ visited oregon and stayed committed to texas. that doesn’t really fly with us, right? i dont blame TCU at all for that policy.

by ibleedburntorange49-9 on Jan 24, 2012 12:10 AM CST up reply actions

It's definitely not something worthy of blame

Texas basically has the same policy. Normally a middle-feeder in the recruiting world, as TCU is, has to deal with it, but maybe they feel like their entry into the BCS AQ world means they don’t anymore.

by Wrangler86 on Jan 24, 2012 11:15 AM CST reply actions

Exactly. Although TCU may FEEL big in their britches

there is no way they should say “if you take a visit, your offer is gone”.

by 40A on Jan 24, 2012 12:13 PM CST up reply actions

I can certainly understand Daje not wanting to burn his TCU schollie if that is his 2nd choice

But our coaches should have made it clear that the offer is solidly his IF he does visit. Obviously some pussyfooting around about symantics of his status had him concerned enough to not burn his TCU status. I think we take the blame for that in not being clear with him that he is getting “offered” upon arrival.

We're Texas, We're not OK.

by Wrangler86 on Jan 24, 2012 12:31 PM CST up reply actions

I was wondering if Mack actually wants to meet him before promising an offer

It seems far-fetched, but it could be the case. But if it is the case, why not have Mack go to the living room, find out whatever he needs to know, and based on that, tell Daje there’s an offer gift-wrapped for him on the Forty Acres? I can understand if the HC wants some quality control, but if an in-home by Mack would avoid the messiness with TCU rescinding a scholarship offer, then it would seem a decent alternative.

*note that this is merely a hypothetical alternative

I have no idea whether there might be some other reason the coaches would feel it necessary for DJ to trip to Austin for his offer.

If that's the case, and if TCU actually did give the ultimatum...

…that would seem to indicate that Johnson would commit on the spot, no? He wouldn’t go if he thought it would jeopardize the offer he would actually want to take.
