UT regents expected to extend football coach's contract
The governing board of the University of Texas is expected to extend the length of football coach Mack Brown's contract by four years, through 2020, a well-placed source told the American-Statesman this evening.
The source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the source was not authorized to speak publicly, said Brown would continue to receive annual raises of $100,000. His current compensation is $5.2 million.

I'm not sure I understand why they're doing this now
But I didn’t understand when they did it last time either. If his current contract is set to expire four years from now, why rush to lock the University into a contractual obligation before you have to? What message are they trying to send and to whom?
Because recruiting top level talent to UT has really suffered with a lot of "Mack Brown is only under contract for four more years" rumors...

Do you remember all of the rumors not long ago that Mack Brown was retiring?
They are trying to stop the negative recruiting based on Mack Brown retiring.

Maybe they're looking for JoePa-like figure in Mack Brown.
He tells them when HE is ready to retire.
27-25: SCOREBOARD - to infinity and beyond!
contract extension, fine. pay raise??? not fine!
i think mack is by far the best coach for UT because he has kept a clean program, maybe one of 3 in the country right now. as an alum, even though i am a huge football fan, the integrity and the respect of the university is primary to me, even if it means we have a few down seasons.
so i love that mack is going to stay…..
BUT the pay is beyond what mack deserves. he has no outside options, i.e. he would never go anywhere else. then why the high salary? usually salaries are high because you want outside poachers to not steal your talent. mack would never move anywhere else.
also, mack has shown no actions towards giving some of the money back to the university. i have not heard of any chairs, fellowships or scholarships he has started. if he was giving back to the university, i would be less critical of the raise.
all in all, im glad he is staying but i have reservations, none of which have to do with his coaching or his recent record.

I like Mack as well
And there are a couple of endowments with his name on them but (I believe) they were done to honor him, not funded by him. This is less about Mack than it is about the BOR and their decision making process, imho. Do they believe that Mack will be coaching this team at 69 years old? If not, wouldn’t it make more sense to leave the contract in place, find/groom a replacement who knows Mack’s contract expires in 2016 and is willing to wait that long?
Unless there are already “behind the scenes” discussions going on (as some believe), the message to Mack Brown replacements is clearly “move along, there’s nothing to see here”.
They already tried the whole publicly grooming his replacement thing. As I'm sure you recall, it did not go well.
I have no problem with the extension. It appears to just extend his current contract for an additional four years (the raises were already built in). If Texas implodes over the next couple of years, I suppose it could get ugly. However, I believe that Mack Brown will step down when he is done coaching and no buyout will be necessary. Thus, I don’t think the contract length is that important.
As for whether he gives back to the University with his own personal money, I have no personal knowledge about that, so I would not want to speculate. It looks like you are right that most of the fellowships/scholarships in his name were donated by an alumnus.

Giving Money to the University
Maybe we could count the revenue he has generated in creating the wealthiest college football program in the nation as part of his “give back to the University” debt?….imho
I think stability is the key to the contract extension. The signal seems to be that Mack will be part of the University program (coaching or not) for a very long time…this provides a comfort cushion for parents…they are not negotiating with a weakened coach and that despite rumors, Mack is a man the University respects, has faith in, and is determined to hold on to for as long as they can.

Stole my thunder
I think it would be cool to see Mack as the AD eventually.
