Texas vs Baylor Open Thread

TEXAS (13-7, 3-4 Big 12) at #6/7 Baylor (18-2, 5-2 Big 12)
Saturday, January 28, 2012 • 12 pm (Central)
Ferrell Center (10,284) • Waco, Texas

From Texas Sports:

TELEVISION: The game will be televised nationally by CBS. Verne Lundquist (pxp) and Clark Kellogg (analyst) will call the action.

SERIES: Texas leads, 157-79. Last meeting: Texas 60-54 (March 5, 2011; Waco).

Series vs. Baylor
Texas has faced Baylor more times (236 entering Saturday) than any other opponent. In fact, UT’s opening four games in the school’s first year of basketball (1906) came against the Bears (Texas won all four). The only time Texas and Baylor did not meet since 1906 was in 1908, when the Longhorns did not field a team. The Horns have won 51 of the last 62 meetings between the two schools dating back to the 1982-83 season.

I could draw an analogy between the two schools for color choice, NCAA investigations…but I won’t.

FT shooting isn't about age or experience

some players can just do it better than others.

We actually weren’t that bad last year either. But Tristan Thompson single-handedly ruined our FT% since he took the most free throws

One positive is that Baylor does have 4 players with 2 fouls

Foul trouble could be an issue if Texas can stay close and aggressive in attacking the rim. That much harder, though, when BU is in zone and Texas can’t hit enough shots to make them think about going man

It feels like college bball is being ruined by incompetent refs. Why do some of these games appear to be so one sided…sorry guess i’m still a little hurt over last years tourney, but man we cannot get any calls to go our way!!! Very frustrating to watch over and over.

The CBS Graphic Effect...

Unless we can knock off BU/MU/KU, our resume will look something like:

TEXAS LONGHORNS
Record: 20-11
RPI: 50
SOS: 30
Vs RPI Top-50: 2-8
Key Wins: Temple, K-State

And that’s the best case scenario, unless we knock one of them off…

by txtwstr7 on Jan 28, 2012 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

I don't disagree with you- I think the strength of the Big 12 really helps in a year like this.

But that’s why i think the Mizzou game is so crucial- I think it’s a matchup that is ok for us. It’s at home, and they are a highly ranked team. If we can win that one, and maybe find another good win out there (BU or K State at home?), then I think we’ll sneak in. This is assuming we take care of business vs. the Tech and OU’s of the conference. (I think 9-9 could get us in this year.)

by HookemHouston on Jan 28, 2012 2:31 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

76-71

Brown carried us once again but not completely happy with shot selection. Counted at least 5 ridiculous three point attempts – only one of them went in. Kabongo really stepped up the 2nd half. If he’s actually making shots, I’d like to see him take more. REALLY needs to improve his foul shot though. We missed 10 free throws and lost by 5 points.

Kabongo had a good game but the other freshmen gave us very little contribution. 7-25 combined shooting for McClellan, Lewis, Bond, Holmes, Gibbs. These guys will need to grow, but unfortunately JCB’s shot chucking is stunting their growth. Can’t tell Brown to stop shooting because he’s clearly our best player.

I would call this a sexy road loss. Too bad the NCAA committee doesn’t care about sexy losses.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 28, 2012 2:26 PM CST reply actions

The guy shot 11-22 from the floor

I understand it can be seen as shot chucking, but he was on fire in the game. Barnes’ offense stunts their growth more than anything. We don’t run an offense for long stretches of time, and can’t rely on anyone but Brown to score. McClellan got all of 4 shots, he got 0 in then 2nd half of KU. We also missed FT’s yet again, which I guess is part of our offense like its a part of Kstate’s.

Sexy road losses help a bit, helped Maryland make the tourney 08-09. They finished 7-9 in the ACC, but did knock off #1 UNC at home. If we beat Mizzou or Baylor we should be fine

Out of curiosity, I checked a 2012 NBA mock draft

http://nbadraft.net/2012mock_draft

- Kabongo drafted in 1st round (22nd pick)
- Brown, Chapman, Wangmene all undrafted

…you’re kidding me, right? Maybe this is because they expect Brown to stay for his senior year. I’m thinking Chapman could possibly find himself in the 2nd round. Has a nice stroke at the line and from midrange and can play some defense/rebound.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 28, 2012 2:36 PM CST reply actions

Chapman's biggest issue will be his defense in the NBA, most notably his lack of lateral movement

I think it’s improved, but most bigs will be able to spin by him or even face him up and drive by him on a consistent basis. I think it’s part of the reason he’s so often in foul trouble.

I am intrigued to see if JCB gets drafted whenever he does come out. i could see him as a good sparkplug coming off the bench.

The NC State game was a real killer.

Glad to see J'Covan back

Chappys foul trouble killed us. And our FT shooting did us in ( typical of a Rick Barnes team).

Kabongo looked good stroking it from the field but needs to hit more from the line. J’Covan missing the front end of a one and one was huge, and our 1-13 from 3 in the first half killed us.

I’m feeling good about playing baylor here and Mizzou on Monday assuming J’Covan can make it through the game. Its so frustrating to watch his KD like efforts go to waste, if only he had 1 consistent player around him. He is great getting us even with teams or helping us come back but uses up all his shots in the comeback process and just loses it at the end. So glad he’s on our team though, maybe next year we’ll have enough to win in spite of ole rick?

I think we get in

But BARELY and probably as a result of past tourney success and name recognition etc…

We need to either beat BU or Mizzou to get that signature win though

by jtdoes on Jan 28, 2012 4:50 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Tourney success?

We’ve been eliminated week 1 4 of the past 5 years. I think we can get in if we can beat Mizzou or Baylor at home. I think name will help but not the reason why. The win vs temple will also help

Doesn’t matter if we make it in, we’ll lose right away if we don’t have a cast around J’Covan. Brown is a great player in leading us back in these games, but he’s being forced to take every shot. We need McClellan to take more than 4 shot, and take some pressure off J’Covan

Back from the game ...

The tennis-ball-green shirts were even annoying in the arena.

The home crowd was OK, but not all that on fire. Most annoying, though, is the extremely low basketball IQ in that arena. Guess that’s what happens when your team sux for decades, and then has a year or two of success. The fair-weather fans come out in droves. The major booing, wanting a whistle for an alleged over-and-back on an in-bounds pass, was flat-out embarrassing.

Fewest Texas fans I’ve seen at this particular game in a long time. Glad we gave ’em a run at the end.

Hook ’em.

Watch out, I bite.
