We ARE the Joneses (TM)
This off-hand comment by DeLoss Dodds, which BON has now picked up, has transformed us from an admired program into what the rest of the world views as hubristic jackasses. Even worse Dodds has managed to alienate a large percentage of the Longhorn faithful with his Longhorn Network that about six people get. It is time for Dodds to retire.
Which brings me to Dodds’ asshole buddy Mack Brown. The Regents should have grown a pair and said, "Mack, win the Big 12, then we will talk." But no they incredibly gave him a contract extension. Please note that I am a fan of Brown, and as such do not want him fired, but we should demand performance for pay.
Which sadly brings me to Rick Barnes. He has done a great job of taking us to the next level, but we will need a new coach to take us all the way. Barnes’ forte is taking smallish teams and getting them to over-perform which has been moderately successful in the Big 12 but which also guarantees early exit at tournament time. For what we pay him we can bring in a coach who can coach big men thereby giving us a shot at a title.
In short, the men’s athletic department has turned us into a bigger joke than aggy. God how I hate that!

Feeling a bit inclined to feed the troll
But I’ll go do something more productive instead, like jam toothpicks under my fingernails.

If you have any extra toothpicks, boh ...
… please send ’em my way.
I would try to
point out to you some flaws in your argument like 1)Mack got no new money in his contract (he didn’t get a raise!), and 2)Your theories about basketball seem painted in too wide of strokes, but….
no. TROLL IN THE DUNGEON!!!!!
No, you're a troll because you are trashing Dodds and Brown in a pretty inflammatory manner
If you’re criticizing Dodds for the LHN, I encourage you to see the end game. It wasn’t to make everything roll out 100% in 2011. It’s not even to do that in 2012. It’s about the long-term contract, increasing exposure, and building the brand. Sure only a few distributors in Texas carry LHN, but some (FiOS) carry it elsewhere in the nation, too. I can get it here in Maryland. And just as carriers resisted the Big Ten Network, NFL Network, etc., they’re resisting LHN, but it’s going to prove as inevitable as BTN and NFLN.
As far as hubris, well, there’s a certain amount of pride involved. Texas has by far the most fnancially successful athletics department in the nation, and is one of the few actually operating in the black. IIRC, Auburn actually took a net loss as a department the year they won the BCS championship, and do most other years as well. Dodds has spearheaded some of the nation’s most impressive athletic facilities improvements, made Texas basketball relevant, resurrected Texas football from the also-rans, and made Texas perhaps the most influential school in the country in terms of media contracts and conference realignment. While the previous post-DKR coaches at Texas did okay, Mack Brown has become a legend at Texas, with a Heisman winner and several serious candidates (McCoy twice, Vince, and Benson) on his watch, two BCS championship appearances (one win), multiple BCS bowl game wins, lots of other bowl wins, etc. He also does this by taking the high road, which is more than guys like Saban, Meyer, or Miles can say. Beyond that, Mack may have his faults, but calling him an asshole is just ridiculous. By all accounts he is one of the nicest, warmest guys in sports. If you’re calling him that because of the contract, then try some critical thinking. This contract was almost certainly nothing more than a public stunt to demonstrate the university’s confidence that Mack will be around for a long time, assuaging recruits’ concerns that Mack might be on his way out.

Well stated!
As an ’82 grad, I have seen enough years that I agree completely with Burntorangehorn that Dodds and Brown have only lifted the program back to the best of the best. The only addition is that the success of the athletic program has resulted in contributions to the academic programs. A hefty portion of the Longhorn network goes to academics and is not just for sports. In addition, the Dodds has contributed a portion of the excess in certain years to The University, but does have to pay for the stadium expansion etc.
Let me ask you Barista, do you go to UT football games? Are you a Season ticket holder which necessitates a payment to the Longhorn Foundation? If yes to either question, then tell me how much you give as an outright gift to academics? What do you think happens once the sport facilities are paid for? More money to academics.
With your early morning post, either finish the cup of coffee or let the alcohol wear off. Dodds has been amazing in what he has accomplished and makes me proud to be a Longhorn.

No, it's a play on a common expression.
“Keeping up with the Joneses” means attempting to attempt to gauge oneself against the neighbor who sets the standard. Do you disagree that other programs wish they could have bagged $295M exclusive network with ESPN? That they wish they could lead the nation in apparel sales and income, even when the football and basketball teams are having down years? That they wish they could have facilities like Texas? That they wish they could have a veritable stranglehold on recruiting in arguably the nation’s best state for that?
But even if your argument that “We are the Joneses” were correct, your silence on all the other points I addressed in my post is quite telling.

Arrogant
I don’t necessarily disagree, with the arrogance comment but your post was off base and used insulting language.

We've been arrogant for decades.
That’s one reason a lot of other programs hate us. We have a superior brand. We know it. And we act like it. DeLoss was just being a good salesman.

Yep, totally rational.
Yeah, that was a bit uncalled for
And the whole thing about Mack’s contract is a silly recruiting ploy. Nobody in their right mind thinks he will be around for that length of time, so it is only someone our of their mind that would let it be irritating.

It had a certain understated stupidity. Probably what Barista was shooting for, no?

Who could we get that is better than Barnes?
Now I’m all for getting rid of Goestenkors.Instead of improving and getting the best players in Texas she can’t even compete with Baylor

I think the reason
a lot of us have latched on to the we are the joneses statement can be boiled down to being sick of apologizing. Everyone paints Texas as the evil empire no matter what the facts are. Personally I love the “We are the Joneses”. Instead of apologizing for having one of the most successful programs and the wealthiest we’re taking pride in that fact. Everyone guns to beat us or be us so why shouldn’t be proud?

Dodds has a supreme understanding of the magnitude of the Texas program.
It has nothing to do with pride or arrogance … except in your mind.
agree jones is better that romancing
Dodds, Brown, Barnes are safe. Now Dodds needs to man up and “let go” Gail G.
epic failure.
we also need a new basketball arena NOW!

Some of you hate me but at least I am not an sycophantic apologist for DeLoss Dodds. I have a mind of my own and will continue to rag on Dodds and his rag-tag underachievers until changes are made. Or Mr. Bean gives me the boot, whichever comes first.

The "We are the Joneses" claim has to tickle Baylor fans to death
You are the Joneses – who keep losing to Baylor.
As for the OP, if texas is your alma mater, what discipline did you receive your degree in?
you know you lost to us...at home.....in mighty Kyle Field...with the powerful 12th Man behind you....
and finished with fewer wins than us….and had more losses….so yea….just throwing that out there
In The Morning To You
Also somehow, this hadn't registered with me yet.
Texas in 2011: 8-5
A&M in 2011: 7-6
Wow. In a year when A&M was expected by most one analyst to make it to the national championship.
Maybe its the all-nighter I just pulled to finish analysis homework, but I am really floored by this, that in what we might have called a disappointing season, A&M managed to have an even worse one. A&M has won more games than Texas exactly once in the last ten years, has beat Baylor only 2/3rd of the time they play, and has a pretty bad all-time record against us.
I’m just guessing now, but I really think the image of A&M a quality national program (at least in my consciousness) has been informed by: 1. Their relative success against rivals in the last 25 years (they’re almost even with Texas over that time) and 2. The economic prosperity enjoyed by the State of Texas over that time.
Man, good luck in the SEC.

If a man is alone in the woods and he speaks, if no one hears him,,is he still wrong?
When you are stating facts it is neither pride nor arrogance. It is simply the truth. We ARE The Joneses.
At the end of 2011 season, Texas’ all-time record is 858–330–33 (.723) which ranks second as the winningest football team in NCAA history. Texas is also recognized for their post-season appearances ranking second in number of bowl game appearances (50), ranked fourth in bowl game victories, and eighth in total number of games played (1221). Bowl record is 26-22-2. Texas holds an NCAA record for most winning seasons at 106 out of 118 seasons of football. Texas ranks 1st in the Big 12 conference for most bowl game appearances and victories. Texas ranks 1st with a Big 12 conference record of 140–39 (78%) since conference began in 1996. Texas holds the Big 12 Conference record for 21 consecutive conference wins from 2004–2006. Texas holds the record for the most Southwest Conference Championships won with 27. Texas won a record 6 straight Southwest Conference Championships from 1968–1973. Texas is 6th with 32 total conference championships won among all NCAA teams.Texas holds the NCAA record of most consecutive weeks ranked at 162 from the 2000–2010 seasons.

Hard Truth
This is a perfect example of why Texas fans are considered ignorant by many. Too many look at everything from simply the fans point perspective. College sports are a business and must be looked at in that way. Every decision DD has made has been to expand the influence of our brand and make it the most valuable in college sports. We didn’t become the richest athletic department for no reason; it came from business minded decisions.
If more fans were to look at it as that, we would have far less ignorant Texas fans.
You think that's in any way unique to, or even just more common with, Texas fans?

You make some good points
I usually make my living going against the grain but you deliver your points with all the subtlety of 180 proof. I happen to agree that "We are the Joneses’ is not only arrogant but also old farte cliche and it bothers me that some people find this cliche funny. It’s the kind of crap that 5-7 and 8-5 seasons are made of.
And as far as I’m concerned the LHN, ESPN and Dodds can all go to hell. They have conspired to rob me of my UT basketball for the year. I am consequently boycotting the Erwin Center this hoops season, not that it matters to anyone.

The "We are the Joneses" remark has turned some UT fans into "hubristic jackasses"
and YOU, Barista, are a PRIME example of one such fan.
What Dodds meant with his comment, is that we win ALOT, in almost ALL sports, and we make a TREMENDOUS amount of money doing so. Unfortunately, some people like Barista misinterpreted Dodds’ comment to mean that Texas should win the national title in football, basketball, and baseball every year. Though this would certainly be nice, it is impossible. They ignore the fact that Mack Brown is undoubtedly one of THE greatest college coaches in our lifetime, amassing a huge amount of wins and a national championship against a team once thought unbeatable. Barista is also dismissing Rick Barnes unbelievable accomplishment of taking a basketball team that plays on the campus of a 100% football-school to the NCAA tournament 13 years in a row. Also, Dodds hired a guy named Augie Garrido to coach our baseball team. Ever heard of him? And coach G. has been a disappointment, but the sheer fact that Dodds was able to lure her away from Duke is amazing.
Listen, Dodds, all the coaches, and the entire Texas athletic program have their problems and issues. The last two years have been frustrating for the football program, to say the least, and the current basketball team is very disappointing. I even think that there can be a healthy, dissenting debate about Mack and his recent contract extension and raise. That being said, if you’d be willing to trade Dodds’ and his 32 year tenure as AD for something/someone else, then I suggest you find another team to root for. A good place to start would be one of the several universities that currently faces nightmarish scenarios of horrible athletic performances, decreased state funding, and athletic departments that are woefully in debt with no end in sight.

Was Dodds actually the one who lured Goestenkors away from Duke?
I assumed that was mostly Chris Plonsky, the women’s sports AD.

Thanks for the link. Enlightening.
Wow, I just had a UT sports idiot moment. I had always thought “Chris” was a guy. Talk about gender-profiling.
Good question. I wonder if Plonsky & Dodds both worked together on Goestenkors or it was just all Plonsky.
Women's AD makes most of the decisions
