Sundays with Bill, Official Visit Weekend Edition
Texas picked up a big commitment from Pflugerville Hendrickson speed merchant Daje Johnson. Daje could contribute immediately on a Texas offense starved for playmakers. Texas also hosted Van MLB Dalton Santos, and Plano West LB / DE Bryce Cottrell. Santos just pulled the trigger. Cottrell is playing it close to vest, but Texas gave him something to think about. Texas needs them both.
DGB made a visit to Mizzou this weekend, how'd did it go? We'll discuss.
In team news, off season workouts are underway. We'll talk spring ball and what to look for.
Talking points:
* Let the Great Daje Johnson positional debate begin. He's needed on offense, but many believe he's the next member of the Millionare's Club at DBU.
* Dalton Santos becomes #26. Possible immediate impact?
* As I said, Bryce Cottrell is playing it close to the vest. Could proximity finally work in Texas' favor?
* DGB visited Mizzou, did the dark horses improve their standing. Columbia bouncers say no.
* Junior Days are just around the corner. I'll have the updated list for both JD1 and JD2.
* Hassan Ridgeway was allegedly looking around. He just told Orangebloods he's 100% committed to Texas. Hook that Sumlin.
Fire away.

Some breaking stuff to start....
Per Orangebloods, Ridgeway says he is committed to Texas 100%. Here’s to hoping as he’s a great prospect
oh and Santos committed for sure
Has anybody actually read Ketch's article to make sure the heading isn't some false teaser?

Unofficially committing to Mizzo on Arky thread… saw it on Recruitocosm…. not a lot of weight.. but an odd starting point.

Definitely not credible... however a weighty insider with Arky.
Typical game of operator. Arky insider (real) gets wind of Mizzo story (unconfirmed) and relates to the audience.

Kenny Hill surprises me
He went to my old high school so I got to see him a lot in the playoffs. He’s a good runner and makes smart decisions with his feet, but I don’t think he’s better than JT as a passer.
He’s a great high school player though
Kenny Hill
I think Texas can get Swoopes AND Kenny Hill. I think that’s why he got the JD2 invite. Texas can’t get Swoopes and Barrett. They’re powerful, but not that powerful.

First dibs on DGB news!
Just kidding! 50/50 still.
Ridgeway is a Horn…maybe he was just swayed a little but usually when it’s this late, Mack has it shut down on recruits so no worries.
Santos and Daje are HUGE! Complete solidification of this class. Best class under Mack IMHO. Future stars in this class…bank on it.
DGB
A couple independent sources have reported that DGB was kicked out of a bar in Columbia for being underage. Not good when you’re with your parents on a visit. I’m sure mom, dad and Dorial had something to talk about when he got home. I think it hurts Mizzou quite a bit.

Twitter is crazy
Mizzou fans are convinced he already committed because of how great the trip was. Arkansas fans are saying Harpo’s ensured that he’s going to become a Hog. There are even some OU fans who still think they’re in it. What’s funny, though, is that no one is talking about Texas at all.
I saw the DGB recruitment compared to an ink blot

An alternative
Most articles say he was kicked out of the bar. One place, however, said that they brought him there for dinner and that they told him it was after dinner hours by that time of night, so it was really no big deal. If that’s true, it makes you wonder why someone would bring him to a bar for dinner. Are the restaurant options that bad in Como?
Another ink blot situation
That account sounds very Mizzou spun.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 29, 2012 5:51 PM CST up reply actions
They aren't
A few of my friends go there and I’ve gone there. You don’t eat at the bar in question, Harpo’s, that late at night as it’s a great bar to go drink at.
That and there are some pretty good restaurants in CoMo
More optimistic sure
I wouldn’t call it confidence. I strongly believe nobody knows for sure other than DGB and his mother and father.

Now we wait
For DGB to decide on what he wants. I really wish this was like the Hicks situation couple of years ago if he decided on Florida or Texas his family was moving to Gainesville or Austin. If the Beckham’s plan on doing that then i think he ends up at Texas cause of the parents apparently love the coaching staff and we have a better shot at winning a MNC.
Texas has met all their needs and has put together a talented, deep class
DGB would be a cherry on top.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 29, 2012 5:31 PM CST up reply actions
Heh, well at least Mizzou completely dropped the ball
Getting denied at Harpo’s was a huge mistake as it getting out to his family. It’s a good bar, but not worth screwing up an entire trip
MIZ-DGB was pretty good though
It's a bad decision on Mizzou's part
DGB was on a business trip, and Mizzou treated it like a circus. I wouldn’t have played it that way.

What are your thoughts on Tim Cole?
I read the write up of GOBR and it makes me a little queasy, but at this point I dont turn my nose up at people who could help on ST and depth. With as many busts as we have had lately people who can contribute in any way are welcome as long as we get a few studs sprinkled in

Cole and S&C
Look at Edmond. He is like Whaley 2.0 with the weight gain but Wylie has managed to keep him in there. Wylie’s system works. Cole has the ability to pack on about 20lbs of muscle with a redshirt. This will help in his ability to play
I think Cole is somewhere between a good starter and special teams specialist
His work and development will determine where he lands. He must get better in coverage to play OLB at Texas.

bit of a non serious question
Darrell Royal…great coach or the greatest coach?

by horns1025 on Jan 29, 2012 5:36 PM CST via mobile reply actions
Great coach
Greatest in Texas history. We all need to pray for DKR. I won’t say more than that, but he is a very old man.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 29, 2012 5:37 PM CST up reply actions
I was pretty close to DKR at one time
Not personally. But, back in the days that he was coaching, a reporter could talk to the players or the assistants or the head coach — if you went through the right channels. If you followed protocol. And if you kept your damn mouth shut and listened to what he had to say!!!!! You could disagree with him — but do it 1-on-1, not in a group setting. He’d spit you out whole if you tried that. Friend of mine tried it and still has the tooth marks.
Royal was a great . . . sorry, GREAT, people person. He attracted highly-motivated and upward seeking players and coaches and reporters and alumni/boosters. He had short shrift for the foolish, the lazy, the uninformed. Or those who didn’t LISTEN when he talked. He told great stories. Had a little country cornpone/down to earth humor about him. Knew how to work a crowd, and did if with a kind of malice that came across as aw-shucks. But was pre-meditated.
Most of all, he — through his staff — prepared his players as well as they could be prepared. And when an opponent thought they had him figured out, he’d throw a knuckleball at them. When he lost, it was because (1) the opponent had better players, or (2) Darrell got outcoached. And that happened on occasion, and he’d admit it. If you knew how to translate his words.
DX Bible was a terrific coach in his era. Fred Akers was underrated — better than you realize. Mack Brown is the classic organization man, the Head Honcho who coaches the coaches and pulls the strings from behind the curtain, like Frank Morgan (the actor playing the wizard) in the Wizard Oz.
Darrell Royal was the combination of all the best assets of all the rest. Good as Mack has been, Darrell never would have let instituational inertia creep in and devour the program like Mack did from 2006-2008.
I don't disagree
But don’t forget that the Royal teams in the years between his first championship and the wishbone were not so hot. 1965-1967: 6-4, 7-4, 6-4.

But he’s pro Oregon / Pac 12 everything. No I don’t like him talking to a kid on an official visit to Texas at 3 in the morning, but it’s possible that Cottrell texted him. Either way Hopkins responded at 3 am.

Last weekend was his second, both times with his parents. He may be solid to the Horns, but I dont think this is wrapped up yet, especially considering how it has transpired.
bigger picture
Hassan cut out his HS coach on the visit. Now if he was told to sneak into town and go behind his coach by Sumlin. That will not go over well with coaches. He also yanked an offer on a kid recently. Was an offer from previous staff, but still will not be taken well. We shall eventually hear how it all went down, but these are no the moves you want to have as first impressions on HS coaches in Texas. This will got endear him at all. Could come back to really haunt him.

he yanked the offer of a 2013 kid. that happens all the time. Hell, BFLT’s “Good Man” yanked the offers of two 2009 guys when he came aboard in 2007.

not unusual
the big strike is if he told Hassan to go behind his coaches back.. that will not be taken well

Arky
I don’t see DGB committing to Texas. Arky is in a much better position at QB, plus they are strong around the rest of the offense and will be highly ranked. Not to mention, it’s closer to home.
I don’t buy the argument that Texas is closer to an MNC than Arkansas, we have lost 13 games in two seasons and have a big fat ? At QB. Also, this non-sense about his brother being a fan is just stupid. What difference could that possibly make in a recruitment? Players like that don’t make choices like this based on whose jersey their little brother wears.

um actually yea family preference plays a big role in recruiting
look at Arkansas yea they have a QB this year but what about next year? doesnt look as bright does it. and as for OU they have been out for awhile. and look at Texas he’ll be playing for a young offense and will be playing for a team that will be in the Title hunt as early as next year
In The Morning To You
Family preference > little bro's fav
The fact that mom and/or dad like a team is significant and always impacts these choices. The fact that little brother likes a team is meaningless, IMO. You don’t honestly disagree do you?
by BMG on Jan 29, 2012 10:04 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
i think with a guy like DGB he probably does care what his little brothers favorite is.
and either way parents love Texas according to reports they arent that thrilled with Petrino and Mizzou. as i said they LOVE Mack and Sally
In The Morning To You
I would disagree
Not because I don’t think you’re right, but becaues we don’t know what factors into each recruit’s decision making process. Some players commit because of a coach. Others because of playing time, family influence, facilities, academics, etc. etc.
I don’t think we can say for certainty we know what elements are most important for DGB at this point…
I strongly disagree that Arkansas is in a better place at QB
Wilson is gone after 2012, then a bunch of guys without any starting experience.

The worst year for Petrino QB's in FBS have had was probably his first at Utah State
Patrick Mullins hit about 55% (209/383) for over 2700yds., 12TD, 16INT, and 7.20yds/att. Ash just hit 57% (99/174) for 1079, 4TD, 8INT, and 6.20yds/att.
That’s well over twice as many passing yards, a 50%-better TD:INT ratio, and a full yard more per attempt than Ash had. And that was Petrino’s worst QB performance, not a typical one, which is more like 3000+yds. and 25+TDs.
What the future holds after Tyler Wilson remains to be seen, but with even average talent, Petrino’s a pretty safe bet to trot out a very productive QB in 2013.

Otherwise Brewer is going to be thrown into the fire with no experience and little development and it’s a crapshoot. Arky can negative recruit on that all day long and at least point to the fact that they have a plan…

Ash's year
Very difficult to project how he will be next year.
We have to remember he was a 4th stringer this offseason and got very few reps. No time to mesh with receivers, and one of the starter WRs was injured the rest of the year (along with Shiple and the RBs). Not to mention the poor play from the starter WRs.
I think the offseason will do him wonders, especially given that he knows hes ‘the guy’ this year and will get the reps.
I don’t think you see a lot of success with true FR QBs, and especially with the lack of productivity from the players around him
Well, you are making an even larger assumption with a totally UNTESTED QB - I like my chances a helluva lot better than yours!

UL brings more than WVU
BYU is certainly a much more valid debate, but then, I don’t think the conference would just add one more team. Adding those two would round things out very, very nicely. UL is a fantastic candidate because budget, football capacity, facilities, and top-three basketball program revenues. They’re also in a much better football state than WVU.

Agreed.
He may go unappreciated in Manny’s scheme because the LBs get more sacks. But the NFL guys should look at the film. Oak is a beast.
I think Vaccaro could go 1st round too, if he plays well, mostly because of his unusual size for the position. He may be better suited for the NFL than for college at the size he is.
God, just talking about this defense makes me want the season to start tomorrow.

2013 JUCO DE Thoughts
Ced Reed should be a fine player at Texas. Mack Brown has said as much publicly. Oak is gone after 2012. Texas could also lose Jeffcoat. If Reggie Wilson doesn’t take the next step, Texas is very, very young at the position. This is where Texas could plug in a JUCO DE to play on the opposite side of Reed.

His senior film is pretty good. Unless you a Rivals sub, you can’t watch it. Cottrell looked very disruptive trust me. Even with the Ridgeway news, Texas is still on Cottrell hard. That speaks to how much Texas likes him.
My gut tells me that Texas wants to land Cottrell because they like his talent, and character and because they MIGHT want move Bluiett to TE. Landing Cottrell would give Texas that freedom.

I bet they just look at the shiny objects and rank according to # of stars.

It's based on individual grades, not the stars
Additionally most sites prefer recruits from the SE. Look at the subs per capita, the SE is way out in front. They pander to their target market.

in 2007
ESPN talking heads were making fun of Bama for thier pursuit of Nick Saban.
LSU was basically A&M today in 1999
Michigan State is probably the most comprable program to A&M, but they have never had long term sustained success nor have had as much success as A&M, outside of 1966. Dantonio Changed that
Arkansas in recent years was basically given up for dead once Nutt’s success was waning and many were saying they made the wrong decision to move to the SEC. Petrino changed that.
UCLA has never been able to sustain the success because of a lack of enthusiasm around the program.
Miami caught lightning in a bottle in South Florida but once Florida and the other SEC schools became dominant, that ate into thier recruiting grounds.
A&M is one of the few schools in the United States to have the enthusiasm, resources, and location to build a quality football program. It remains to be seen if the leadership will make it work.
I disagree with your assertion about tAMU
aggy cannot get out of their own way. The school has a history of bad decisions, the move to the SEC is the mother of all of them.
A better analogy of this move would be SMU’s death penalty – tAMU has begun their inevitable slide into obscurity.

I’m banned on Crimson and Cream. It actually shocked me because I did not cuss or post personal attacks
Over a year ago I posted about Jenks OK HS coach getting suspended for playing Jarret Lake from VMA. Lake transferred his senior year to play at Jenks and an angry parent reported the cheating. Lake was not eligible. He was an OU commit in HS living with the parents of another OU enrolled football player (Gabe Lynn).
After the “bust” Lake had to be set free and he became a hog. Jenks HS and Stoops said they didn’t know anything about VMA, but the Jenks HS coach was suspended for a year!!
Then immediately afterTrey Metoyer didn’t squeak into OU after failing his summer school classes in Texas, Stoops sent him to VMA to get him rehabiltated and enrolled at OU. Now he is their newly signed star recruit WR. We should be all over this B.S.!!! This should be front page NCAA Football News.
OU also just got the top JUCO OL (Will Latu) enrolled although he could not pass his JUCO classes and could not qualify in the SEC to get into Auburn where he committed. (He first committed to WVu but had to go JUCO, then failed again and didn’t get into Auburn). But, low and behold, he can enroll as a Sooner. This is crazy. I need support in pointing out these crazy OU standards. We are fighting them with our hands tied and I’m tired of it. Let’s play on an even field!!
We need to challenge this stuff. Texas can’t take these players that can major in underwater basket weaving at OU. We need to balance the required academics that reflect on the field.
I personally don’t care at all what an aggie or sooner says here. I’ll shoot right back, so I don’t get the “banning” unless they were dropping curse words or personal attacks. I hate the personal attacks.
I’m still banned from C&C, and I stil believe it is simplly because I pointed out that Jenks H.S. and OU lied about VMA and the recruiting ties involving Jarret Lake. This was before Metoyer, so now I know 100% sure that I was right.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
Actually being banned from C&C is sort of a badge of honor - revel in it!
"The good news is there's 17 million people who care about Texas football. The bad news is there's 17 million people who care about Texas football." DKR
Dude, lemme tell you about Oklahoma high school football.
Jenks and Union have won like the last 16 state championships between them. People say it’s because they have higher enrollment rates, and that is true, but they recruit and put ineligible players through their teams and have since the mid-to-late 1990’s. They have been caught on a couple occasions but nothing major has ever been put on their high school programs.
The high school association here in Oklahoma is a joke. They know that Jenks and Union recruit players and don’t do a thing, but they almost cost a kid playing for Guthrie a college ship because he wrote down the wrong address after his family moved to Guthrie about a year before the season.
It’s an absolute joke.
Then that school reminds me of De La Salle High School in CA
Catholic School but they have students that live over 45 minutes from the school. Most of there Football team probably couldn’t afford to go to that school. 12K a year.
It is a blessing actually
But, I did not do anything worthy of banning. If I was going to get banned I would have liked to say a whole lot more. I kind of feel ripped off.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
You probably displayed your UT avatar - that would be enough to get banned.

Quick back story on Santos
Santos grew up a Texas fan (sounds familiar). Coach Searels went by Van High School during the spring evaluation period to look at other prospects. He liked what he saw from Santos and spoke to his coaches where it was revealed that Dalton loved Texas. Searels passed this along to Manny. Manny called Dalton to personally apologize and assure him if Texas’ had an opening he would be in play for an offer. Santos hadn’t even received a recruiting letter from Texas (they send out thousands of these) until that point.
Santos decided to commit to Tennessee over Texas in a move that surprised a lot of people. Tennessee lost most of their defensive staff in the off season, including the coaches that recruited Santos. Santos starting looking around at this point.
When the book was closed on MEJ, Texas had an opening for a defensive player and Santos was contacted. It was a foregone conclusion that Santos would commit to Texas if offered, despite the lack of contact. Thank you Edwards Family for not stringing Texas along.

Is it possible at this point that Cole could be underrated?
Seems like a lot of places are already pegging him in as a backup. I loved what I saw from him though, and he seems like he just needs to redshirt to add mass to back up his game. Smart OLB
It's very possible
He has to get better in coverage. If he can get better there, he can be a very good player at Texas.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 29, 2012 9:31 PM CST up reply actions
Perception of Cole
It seems like much of the Texas blogosphere is of the mind that Cole would be a wasted scholarship if he doesn’t become a starter at OLB and only plays on special teams.
I think what a lot of fans are forgetting, though, is that Cole was reportedly instrumental in bringing Malcolm Brown (the DT) to the 40. The two were a package deal, and from what I remember, Brown was willing to go wherever Cole went. Brown was reportedly the TAMU lean, while Cole was the Longhorn. And, because of Cole’s leadership, the Horns ended up with both him and Brown.
That doesn’t sound like a wasted scholarship to me.

Bergeron with 72 carries to MB’s 172 carries… If Joe keeps up that clip, how do you see the breakdown in carries going next year (including Gray)? Hard to argue with that productivity from Joe…
I think the most effective back will the most carries
The coaches really like Brown’s vision. I think he sees things better than Bergeron. Bergeron is better physically and hits the hole faster. Gray is probably better in every facet. I think Gray starts taking carries away from both starting in 2012. There’s enough footballs to go around fellas.

Quick recruiting thoughts
I’d monitor 3 schools offer activity in Texas : Stanford, Baylor and TCU. If Stanford offers a TE in Texas, UT should also be recruiting that player. No program evaluates TEs better than Stanford right now.
Additionally, Baylor and TCU have outstanding evaluators. Baylor was the first to find Colbert , and TCU has been quite successful with under the radar prospect for quite awhile. Patterson has made a living doing it.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 29, 2012 9:44 PM CST reply actions
With that in mind....
Christian Morgan spent the weekend at Baylor and came away impressed according to his tweets. Why do you think our coaches haven’t invited him to a JD yet? I feel like the kid is a gamer and would be a great complimentary TE to RSJ. I know there’s other options but what’s the harm in bringing him in for an evaluation?
question
Who is peter jenkins? I haven’t really heard anything about him, but just saw that the houston chronicle rated him as the #1 LB in texas and is commited to ut?

I think he can maintain his athleticism, but not sure how much additional weight he’s going to need to gain. Maybe 25-30 lbs or so, just my guess.
If he can carry 235, watch out
I think nutrition has a lot of do with Jenkins being light. Once they figure out how to put weight on him, I think he’ll get heavier. He’s a fast metabolism kid.

Demarco Cobbs
was 6’1" and 198 lbs coming out of school. At this pt in recruiting process people are finding reasons not to like kids. 20 Lbs over 4 yrs is not a lot of weight. Remember this kid ran the 40 faster than Gray. Cole is too slow (though reportedly ran a 4.68 since the open) and Jinkens too light. Just what it is after a kid has been commited for 6 months
Jinkens
I usually think too much is made about weight for certain positions (such as MEJ or ASJ)… it has some merit but not all of the time. I’d still love to see Jinkens put on some pounds which he will easily do at UT.
We need a guy like Jinkens who can fly around since we have Santos and Edmond now, a couple of bona fide run stuffers. Makes us more complete.
santos
ran a 4.7, some 4.65 reports. Guy is not slow. Could cut that down to 4.6 range with proper training. people get too caught up in labels. 250 and 4.7 is what we want. Big, fast and a bad disposition.
Folks have been saying Santos has the build for DT for a while now. When guys watched him at 7o7 a number of folks said he will not be LB long.
Get him in a collegiate weight program and all of a sudden he’s 275…That’s not a LB.
that is even better
if he can be 275 and run a 4.75. I am all in. Just depends on how he grows. Love big kids that can run. RB to DT is a Texas tradition now. People forget lot of these kids will be playing somewhere else when they get their first start at DKR.
uhh.
wont happen.
The kid has DT/DE written all over him.
Exhibit 1: Chris Whaley
???
isnt that what I said? If he grows into a 275 kid and maintains his speed that is even better. DL trades at a premium to MLB
Meant to say that maintaining speed at 275 wont happen.
Javorskie Lane was very athletic for his size at 250 and even 275. At 300…he was way to fat. Could have been a great one had he had the proper motivation.
Who cares about straight line speed in a LB?
It’s not needed. He could keep his lateral quickness and short burst and lose his straight line speed for all I care.
Lane was just a fat boy trying to find a position to play - highly overrated.

weight gain
pretty much is a lock. Baby fat gets converted into muscle. Teh question is how much weight and if it effects hi smovement.
See,
but that’s not necessarily true. You can cut weight and build muscle while still staying below your current weight. It’s all about the weight program.
Now some player are just going to gain weight, but that’s not always true, with the correct nutrition.
If you are cutting fat
and gaining muscle, and gain weight, who cares? I don’t.
It makes a big difference for speed

Not really.
Using basic logic (not trying to be a jerk here), if you trim off the baby fat you can become faster.
There are ways to cut weight, gain muscle, and keep speed. Parachutes, tire pulls, etc come to mind.
Either way, who cares about straightline speed? It’s not needed at MLB. Give me lateral quickness over that any day.
Lateral quickness suffers even more
Inertia is harder to reverse when there’s more of it. It’s why a running back who weighs 250lbs. with the same approximate body composition as a RB who weighs 190lbs. is almost never going to have the same lateral quickness…or speed…or a lot of other things.

OLB from Dallas Skyline
Long time Texas commit. Needs to get bigger but he runs like a corner. In fact, he ran a better 40 at The Opening than Johnathan Gray. He will be a player at Texas. Look for him on coverage teams in 2012. He will destroy special teams as a freshman.

+/- on DJ Monroe's touches per game
5? I think if he would have had 7-10 decent touches game this season, he would have taken at least one of those to the house.
How do you see Monroe’s role next season?
I honestly think Daje passes him eventually
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 29, 2012 9:46 PM CST up reply actions
Agreed
Daje has elite speed as well, while I think Monroe just has straight-line speed… just from what I’ve seen.
Daje is a better football player
DJ is probably faster, but it’s closer than some think.

Monroe
Sucks that he hasn’t been utilized the past few years. Hopefully he’ll some touches and return kickoffs and make it to the league.

and how would they line up to the top 5 that are currently enrolled?

Interesting question
Football IQ and football speed go hand in hand. If you know where to go, you’re going to be faster on the field.
1) Sheriod Evans
2) Daje Johnson (nobody has walked him down, and he might not get walked down in college)
3) DJ Monroe
4) Goodwin
5) Diggs

1. J. Gray
2. Daje Johnson
3. DJ Monroe
4. Diggs
5. Goodwin

Kendall Sanders
Now that we picked up Daje, do you think Kendall Sanders will start off at CB? Many were speculating that he would have a “Goodwin” role (sweeps, screens, etc) early, but Daje can take that role.
Also, although Daje will make a bigger impact on offense intially, do you think he’ll get a look at CB/S at one point?
I think Sanders is on offense until the DB depth chart clears
A lot of people forget that Byndom is a junior after 2012.

NFL Potential
I think Sanders best NFL upside is at CB. 6"1 CBs don’t grow on trees and they are needed against taller WR’s. We’ve always had a taller CB in our lineup (C. Griffin, A. Ross, Chykie Brown, Aaron Williams, now Bynum). Could redshirt while we figure the best position for him.
Daje’s full potential might be at DB as well (he has the NFL DB genes!), but he is so explosive on offense. Could begin on O, we might get Dontre Wilson, then he can make the switch to DB, if necessary.

Recruiting usually wins out
How important is recruiting? Bobby Bowden had cancer and didn’t tell any one because he thought it could hurt FSU in recruit. Mack just signed an extension for recruiting purposes only. It matters and it effects decisions.

Jameis Winston
Did anyone read that article where Winston said he was a Texas fan and Texas was one of the first schools he wanted to send film to. I guess the only reason we did not recruit him, for the fear he might commit/sign and we loose Brewer to another school and Winston ends up getting drafter 1st Rd MLB Draft and decides to play baseball instead
I was about to make a comment about Winston
wanting to come to Texas. Here is the link:
http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/01/football_recruiting_not_so_cut.html
Saw that
I’m fine with Brewer. He has all the tools to be a good QB, and there would be a definite risk with Winston. Hard to turn down the kind of money he’s going to be shown and Brewer could potentially be a 4-year guy
fairly sure he is going ot be baseball bound...

jameis winston!
has anybody read that article where he says that he loved the longhorns, texas was the first school he sent film too, he tried talking to the coaches. but they never really got back.
Funny
Didn’t Clowney say something similar about Texas too last year? Crazy
yeah.
thats crazy stuff man if he would of came to our school we would have alot more skill at the qb position. would of made our class almost perfect if we had him huh?
Eh
No telling how Brewer vs. Winston ends up, especially if Winston flips to baseball. Won’t have to worry about that issue with Brewer, so I feel a lot more secure.
We need stability at this position and Winston can’t offer that unfortunately.
Euless Trinity DE Polo Manukainiu also committed to TAMU
Much needed at at critical position. I think he’s a 3-4 end, but his final 2 were Baylor and TAMU. Interesting. TAMU is going back to the 4-3, switching just in time to miss out on Malcom Brown. Well done sirs.

Meh
Guess 11 warm bodies count as a defense
Polo Manukainiu to TAMU
Along with Pope.
Had a pretty good offer list… OU, Arky, UCLA, Miz, Miami, Oregon, etc….
I like Polo quite a bit, could have been a fit at Texas, but the coaches didn't pursue
14 years and counting without a Pacific Islander playing for Mack Brown.

Sounds like Cottrell is seriously conflicted
Orangebloods is probably the most optimistic right now. This could go to NSD. Quite possible that Texas will have 2 Signing Day ceremonies to watch on Wednesday.

Ships will be there.
Texas could have 2 DEs on the roster with more a year experience after 2012. There’s a need. Coaches seem to like Cottrell in a program for a year than some of the 2013 options.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 29, 2012 11:29 PM CST up reply actions
how do you feel about Reggie Wilson?
I think we move a few DTs to DE since we are so stacked there (Whaley in particular)
"We are who we are. People say what they say. The outcome is the outcome. We are proud of ourselves." -DeLoss Dodds 9/21/2011
The light needs to come on for Reggie Wilson
Will it come in 2012. It will be his third year in the program it’s now or never. Texas really needs Wilson to be good.
Greg Daniels is an interesting player. I don’t know if he’ll ever push 290 pounds, not good for a DT. I wonder if he’s a guy that might get a look at DE. I think Daniels is buried on the depth chart at DT.
I feel pretty good about Ridgeway playing early. I think Bluiett should shirt while the coaches figure out his position.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 29, 2012 11:39 PM CST up reply actions
Boyette gonna shirt too?
DT will be 6 deep before we get to the freshman Dorsey Howell Whaley Jackson Moore and Daniels, and even then Brown is first off the bench…so even if Daniels and Whaley move to DE, Boyette would still have a hard time getting quality PT in year one, shirt seems like a no-brainer.
"We are who we are. People say what they say. The outcome is the outcome. We are proud of ourselves." -DeLoss Dodds 9/21/2011
Whaley will stay at DT
Will he play some DE. Sure. I could see NASCAR kind of package at Texas with 4 DEs playing on passing downs.
I Norman and Boyette should shirt. Brown is ready to go.

Biggest miss (non-offer)
Coleman, Fields, Addison, Wheeler, or others?
"We are who we are. People say what they say. The outcome is the outcome. We are proud of ourselves." -DeLoss Dodds 9/21/2011
Wheeler
probably isn’t so much of a miss as the staff not wanting all of the issues that came with him…
I’d say Addison, just so much potential and playmaking ability there, but good question
Addison and it's not close
Addison could be a Longhorn right now if the coaches offered him on offense. Groan.
Coleman has a lot of potential, but Sanders is better and Daje is pretty darn close.
Fields wasn’t interested in Texas. I actually like Marcus Johnson better than Wheeler.
by billfromlaketravis on Jan 29, 2012 11:31 PM CST up reply actions
You like Coleman over Daje?
I think Daje is more versatile (APB, Slot, DB) while Coleman is probably just a slot. The non-offer of Coleman could be an indication that the coaches liking 2013 Ra’Shad Samples better than Coleman.
You could be on to something there
Landing Daje could be hedging their bets on Dontre Wilson.
I do like Coleman better than Daje in a vacuum. Daje is probably a better fit and LOVES Texas.
I think Texas will get Samples. It’ll be interesting though. I think every offensive skill position at Skyline is going to get pulled in different directions.
