I would say so.

Not must win, but is huge none the less.

by GAR 1 on Jan 30, 2012 6:01 PM CST up reply actions

gotta get that signature win

to give us a strong chance for the tourney. This is our best chance to do that so about as close as it could be I’d say

by cade21 on Jan 30, 2012 6:01 PM CST up reply actions

Signature win

can come tonight, in Lawrence, or Baylor at home. K-State at home would be nice too, but not quite as good as Mizzou, Baylor, or KU

by GAR 1 on Jan 30, 2012 6:03 PM CST up reply actions

I'll be there liquored up and ready to go

hopefully lots of others will as well so we can actually have some sort of home court advantage for a change.

by cade21 on Jan 30, 2012 6:03 PM CST reply actions

home court advantage,

isn’t there some ridiculous stat that we’ve only lost 10 games at home sense about 2007? I would classify that as a home court advantage.

by SDG on Jan 30, 2012 6:26 PM CST up reply actions

I've been to the last several games

with exception of the games during break the student section has been pretty full. Not going tonight bc of work, but will be there for TT sat.

by SDG on Jan 30, 2012 7:44 PM CST up reply actions

haven't heard that

but it really doesn’t feel that way most of the time you’re there. I don’t expect us to be as tough as Duke and those types but a lot of the time it’s real dead.

by cade21 on Jan 30, 2012 11:23 PM CST up reply actions

I always feel guilty when I can't make it to games.

The student section is always so lifeless. I don’t get why there’s always a low turnout to all these big, nationally-televised games. Really hope we can pull off the upset! Must win in my eyes. Hook ’Em.

And this team isn’t good enough to overcome those issues. Their margin of error is razor thin

Barnes...

has had golden opportunities to get a signature win in the last two weeks and just has not shown the ability to coach in the final seconds of a ball game. He has had soooo many chances to improve in this area and he just doesn’t. You cannot win championships, and I’ll take a freakin’ conference championship, if you cannot draw up winning plays at the end of games and have your team execute them. How many blown end of games and collapses do you need over ten years to not realize that we have the wrong man as head coach?

I'm sorry... I have to say it

Barnes stood over there at home with the play in front of him. His freshman PG and other young guards (save J’Covan who is new to the stud role though) are thoroughly confused by the zone with 13 freakin’ seconds left and he doesn’t call timeout. Bonehead. His protege thoroughly outcoaches him. After watching all the blown close games you have seen in the last two weeks, you have to conclude this guy cannot coach in the big time. He can recruit. He can teach defense. But he cannot coach offense and stinks at the end of games. He also brings no passion to the floor making our guys a tough watch on television.

The only narrative that is really missing about Barnes

Is much like the narrative for Coach Mack Brown this year. Barnes, this season, is paying for sins of seasons past. He recruited Wangmene and Chapman. He was unable to convince Cory Joseph that a season in the D League is much worse than another year on the 40. Varez Ward escaped out the backdoor for some reason and I thought he was going to be the star. These all fall on Barnes.

Wins and losses this year are a direct reflection on Barnes, although it may not reflect much of the actual coaching job he’s done this year. He had 3 NBA caliber players last year (4 if you count JCovan) and couldn’t win the conference and he has 1 or 2 this year and you’re seeing the results of that disparity.

by feltgod on Jan 30, 2012 10:31 PM CST reply actions

We're frustrated because we see so much potential with this group of guys.

If they were losing by 10+, no one would give a damn. Because they have been losing so close against top competition shows exactly how far this team has come and how good of a coaching job Barnes has done. Sure, the occasional mental lapses happen. It’s expected. You want your young team to grow on there own. A coach can only do so much.

This team has exceeded a lot of people’s expectations coming into this season. Our record is not indicative as to how good we are. If we can finish strong the rest of the way, maybe make the NCAA tourney or at the least a strong run in the NIT, return all our started, we’ll be fine! Remember, 5 freshman playing (6 if you wanna count Gibbs) is tough for any coach to deal with.

I have come to my senses and fully support Barnes and the coaching job he has done so far this year. Hook ’Em!

by EddieTheAlbinoSquirrel on Jan 30, 2012 10:35 PM CST reply actions

Yes we complain

When we see some one make the same mistakes over and over again. We complain. Our coach stinks in winning time. He cannot get his team to execute a well-designed play at the end of a tight game. He has shown that failure year after year after year. Your post would be valid if tonight was an isolated event, even limited to this year. But watching your team panic with 13 seconds left because they are facing a defense they weren’t expecting and you have a timeout in your pocket and don’t use it? It’s just more of the same with our coach.

The Last 4-5 years so much exceptional talent has come and gone, we tend to let our expectations get out of control. This what a team of normally talented freshman looks like. It ’s gets better but it may take another season or 2.

by Xerxes on Jan 30, 2012 10:36 PM CST reply actions

I have to agree with Peter

Barnes has taken this very young team from looking like the pile of crap that they were vs nc state and oregon state to competing with very tough teams in ku, ksu, bu, and mu. Obviously we haven’t gotten the results that we want but that will come eventually. Heck, I was hoping that we would just keep it withing 20 in this stretch of 6 games and we have done much better than that. Next year we will be a force to be reckoned with, and even if we make it to the dance.

Okay! Let’s excuse 08-09 bc we lacked a PG, bc Jcovan wasn’t here. And we almost beat Dook ( keyword almost)

Also let’s excuse 06-07 for our team being all froshes, minus Abrams( and some Atchley)

Damn Barnes has a good resume now. Except we can’t do that. Texas has failed to make it past the 1st weekend of the tourney 4 of 5( soon to be 5 of 6) seasons. No excuses, bad coaching and fundamentals

Wake 2 years ago? Up 76-68 with 3 minutes left

What about the epic collapse the entire season? Is that completely on the players? How about not being able to shoot free throws ( 10-27 from the line in Norman, which I’ll put on the players, a coach can’t be that bad) EVERY year? At least recently, and by that I mean now its been 5 going on 6 seasons since we were a good FT shooting team. I agree Hamilton’s time out was awful and we were screwed by the officials, but the way we lost was typical Barnes.

I just don’t see how this all adds up to it being the players. Maybe they don’t execute, but Barnes doesn’t seem to put them in a position to succeed late in close games. That’s my biggest gripe with him. Also that he hasn’t accomplished much since 07-08.

Barnes

It’s unacceptable to be down by one point with 20 seconds to go, and only get one shot attempt. Regardless of a man or zone defense applied by Haith. Every single coach on our bench and every single player should know you the situation. You go for a shot at around the 10 second mark..worst case, you miss, they rebound, you foul, they make both free throws, AND then you get another shot for the tie and OT. Otherwise, we miss, maybe we get an offensive put back or rebound to reset, maybe they only make one or zero free throws, we go for the win or tie with our second possesion.
Instead, we wait, get one shot attempt and lose. Of course ppl will say, if Myck makes that shot, you aren’t bringing all this up. Even if Myck makes the shot, its the wrong way to approach the situation. You always extend the game as much as possible and give yourself the best and most possible chances to win. I don’t care if we don’t execute because we miss shots, but I feel like we misplayed or miscoached (doesn’t matter which) that situation about as poorly as you can approach a situation

by nash89 on Jan 30, 2012 11:26 PM CST reply actions

Agreed. Barnes always does this. Really it is to be expected.

I said to myself down 10 with 3:57 left, we are going to come back and lose late. Sure enough we did. And we didn’t even have time to foul to maybe have 3 seconds left to try to hit a 3 or 2.

He is turnover prone and seriously wanting on D. Perhaps he should be a spot player instead of the “goto” PG.

Chapman may be good enough now to allow us to play more inside-out stuff.

Holmes and Bond could play at the same time because of the effort they seem to bring.

Well, we add one more victory to our long list of moral victories this season.

Does that figure into bracketology? NIT here we come!!

I blame barnes for not calling a time out. I blame the fans for sitting on their asses the whole game. And I blame the basketball gods for another close game that goes the wrong way.

I know...

hurts.. a lot… but then again we were picking up fouls left and right last night, so I am not surprised we didn’t get the call

Regardless

It was an awful play at the end. It looked totally rushed even though we got the ball with 31 seconds left in the game. The sequence reminded me of the 2009 Big XII championship with Colt casually throwing the ball away with no sense of urgency. Bad play calling at the end by Barnes, and refs usually swallow the whistle late. Can Barnes learn to not have his players wait till 8 seconds left to do something with the ball? Especially in that situation it was awful execution, like always with Barnes coached teams.

"Like always with Barnes coached teams"

This is just false. And ridiculous. Fans have terrible memories, and only remember when things don’t go wrong.

First of all, Barnes wanted his players to go faster last night, we just didn’t execute. This is a problem with our players, not Barnes. Second of all, go to this link. Read Moment No. 61. From your comments you seem like a young fan so you probably don’t even remember that game.

But from someone who’s been living and dying with this team for 14 years, Barnes knows what the hell he’s doing. That a bunch of young players botch it sometimes is not always a reflection of the coach.

sorry

That was one year before I started living and breathing texas basketball. I was. a fan then, but not like I am now. I rememberjust aboutevery game since then. And how we have failed to execute plays down the stretch on a consistant basis since 07-08.

Its sad when you have to go back 8 seasons to prove a point, I used to like barnes but he has simply lost it. With the talent he brings in, we should be making it to the 2nd weekend of the tourney more than 1 time in 6 seasons( I may be going out on a limb counting this year as not making it) You want to blame the last 2 seasons on the players not the coach failing? Go ahead Barnes does just that on a constant basis.

Also

What a ridiculous comment, generally. “Regardless of the fact that the play Barnes drew up should have given us two free throws to win it, it was an awful play.”

Okay… um.

“Refs usually swallow the whistle late.” They do? I don’t know about that, and moreover, Barnes drew up a play to get a shot, he can’t control if the defender mugs our player. You’re basically saying, “Well, if the defense mugs your player and you don’t get the whistle, you should have known better.” Ridiculous on its face.

As for the timing of the play, Barnes wanted us to take the clock down a little bit to avoid giving Missouri to much time. It was the right move, although Kabongo took too long to make his move. Again, the problem right now is not our coaching. It’s our players. And particularly our freshmen point guard.

Fans who don’t understand that are just looking for reasons to bash Barnes. It gets really, really old.

I mean that you can’t expect a foul call, that is not a good last play. Its not like we hit fts anyways, another problem of the barnes era. They shouldn’t wait that long becuase there was no chance at a board. Like the tourney last year we took too long to dribble up the court, gary johnson didn’t have enough time to be fouled or anthing. I can kind of understand not wanting to give mizzou another chance, but at the same time I’d rather get 2 chances and risk giving them the lead back.
I agree, our players are young and are making mistakes. I wouldn’t pin it entirely on one player though,. It would also be more excusable if this team would have accomplished something of relevence since Augustin was here, aside from going 10-27 from the ft line @ OU in 2010, and winning 1 tourney game in 2 years with 5 first round picks and 1 early second rounder. Its inexcusable how this team has underachieved the last 2 years, and the year with durant.

I seem to remember

A game last year in which the officials whistled three? i think fouls with a few seconds left… and one of them was on the opposite baseline too. Very dumb fouls, but they were called, free throws were shot and it was basically a very weird finish. Don’t remember the teams specifically, but this is just one instance of not swallowing the whistle. It doesn’t always happen, we jut tend to remember the times that it does because those hurt the worst!

Just my two cents, don’t want to get involved here haha.

Butler Pittsburgh?

The fouls at the end. Pitt was down one then was fouled and shot 2 FT’s. Made 1st missed second then Matt Howard was fouled by Robinson and made 1 fts and missed the 2nd to let time expire. I think it was that 1, dumb fouls for sure

Still I don’t think that should be your entire play, and I also hate that the coach isn’t taking responsibility for the losses. He blamed Brown for the end of the game, and almost never can take the blame himself. I can’t remember an instance of him doing so at least, but I’ve only been a huge ’Horns fan since 04-05 so maybe he took responsibility before then
